ABSTRACT: Digital rock images are computational representations that capture the geometrical complexity of systems present ubiquitously in nature. In recent years, their use has become widespread due to the increasing availability of repositories, and open-source physics simulators and analysis tools. Here, we present a dataset of 3D binary geometries in a standardized format that represent a wide variety of geological and engineering systems. Our data is freely available at [1].

Reconstructing high fidelity digital rock images using deep convolutional neural networks.

Project description:Imaging methods have broad applications in geosciences. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and micro-CT scanning have been applied for studying various geological problems. Despite significant advances in imaging capabilities, and image processing algorithms, acquiring high-quality data from images is still challenging and time-consuming. Obtaining a 3D representative volume for a tight rock sample takes days to weeks. Image artifacts such as noise further complicate the use of imaging methods for the determination of rock properties. In this study, we present applications of several convolutional neural networks (CNN) for rapid image denoising, deblurring and super-resolving digital rock images. Such an approach enables rapid imaging of larger samples, which in turn improves the statistical relevance of the subsequent analysis. We demonstrate the application of several CNNs for image restoration applicable to scientific imaging. The results show that images can be denoised without a priori knowledge of the noise with great confidence. Furthermore, we show how attaching several CNNs in an end-to-end fashion can improve the final quality of reconstruction. Our experiments with SEM and CT scan images of several rock types show image denoising, deblurring and super-resolution can be performed simultaneously.

Research on 3D crack segmentation of CT images of oil rock core.

Project description:In this paper, we propose a framework for CT image segmentation of oil rock core. According to the characteristics of CT image of oil rock core, the existing level set segmentation algorithm is improved. Firstly, an algorithm of Chan-Vese (C-V) model is carried out to segment rock core from image background. Secondly the gray level of image background region is replaced by the average gray level of rock core, so that image background does not affect the binary segmentation. Next, median filtering processing is carried out. Finally, an algorithm of local binary fitting (LBF) model is executed to obtain the crack region. The proposed algorithm has been applied to oil rock core CT images with promising results.

Dataset for localization and classification of Medjool dates in digital images.

Project description:Nowadays, harvesting, sorting, and packaging fruit and vegetables are still done manually, despite the hard work this represents. The features that experts commonly use to sorting the date palm fruit are size, color, shape, and texture. Recently, it has started to design and develop artificial vision systems that consider the criteria of size, color, shape, and texture to automate these processes. However, the development of these systems is complex due to the lack of labeled datasets that facilitate the creation of models to locate, recognize and classify palm date fruit. This dataset is entitled Medjool, an image dataset of different sizes and maturity levels of Medjool dates. Researchers may use this data to develop a model for automatic location, recognition, classification, and visual counting of the Medjool dates on trays taking into account their visual features such as shape, color, size, and texture. This dataset was collected from the first-round harvest at Palmeras RQ Ranch in Mexicali, Mexico. Images acquisition was performed in natural light. The dataset comprises 2,576 annotated images in two formats, YOLO and PascalVOC format.

Digital optical phase conjugation for delivering two-dimensional images through turbid media.

Project description:Optical transmission through complex media such as biological tissue is fundamentally limited by multiple light scattering. Precise control of the optical wavefield potentially holds the key to advancing a broad range of light-based techniques and applications for imaging or optical delivery. We present a simple and robust digital optical phase conjugation (DOPC) implementation for suppressing multiple light scattering. Utilizing wavefront shaping via a spatial light modulator (SLM), we demonstrate its turbidity-suppression capability by reconstructing the image of a complex two-dimensional wide-field target through a highly scattering medium. Employing an interferometer with a Sagnac-like ring design, we successfully overcome the challenging alignment and wavefront-matching constraints in DOPC, reflecting the requirement that the forward- and reverse-propagation paths through the turbid medium be identical. By measuring the output response to digital distortion of the SLM write pattern, we validate the sub-wavelength sensitivity of the system.

Collection and extraction of water level information from a digital river camera image dataset.

Project description:We present a new water level dataset extracted from images taken by four Farson Digital Ltd river cameras for a Tewkesbury, UK flood event (21st November - 5th December 2012). This data article presents the new water level data together with a description of metadata, data acquisition, and extraction methods. The water level information was extracted from the images using measured points in the field-of-view of each camera using Leica GNSS and Total Station instruments with high spatial accuracy of order of 1 cm. We use river gauge data to verify the new dataset. The new dataset has a short duration but includes the rising limb, peak discharge and falling limb of the flood event. It has potential for verifying future automatic water level extraction methods and for development of automatic flood alert methods and can provide valuable information in data assimilation systems used for improving inundation forecasts.

Two-phase learning-based 3D deblurring method for digital breast tomosynthesis images.

Project description:In digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) systems, projection data are acquired from a limited number of angles. Consequently, the reconstructed images contain severe blurring artifacts that might heavily degrade the DBT image quality and cause difficulties in detecting lesions. In this study, we propose a two-phase learning approach for artifact compensation in a coarse-to-fine manner to mitigate blurring artifacts effectively along all viewing directions of the DBT image volume (i.e., along the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes) to improve the detection performance of lesions. The proposed method employs a convolutional neural network model comprising two submodels/phases, with Phase 1 performing three-dimensional (3D) deblurring and Phase 2 performing additional 2D deblurring. To investigate the effects of loss functions on the proposed model's deblurring performance, we evaluated several loss functions, such as the pixel-based loss function, adversarial-based loss function, and perception-based loss function. Compared with the DBT image, the mean squared error of the image and the root mean squared errors of the gradient of the image decreased by 82.8% and 44.9%, respectively, and the contrast-to-noise ratio increased by 183.4% in the in-focus plane. We verified that the proposed method sequentially restored the missing frequency components as the DBT images were processed through the Phase 1 and Phase 2 steps. These results indicate that the proposed method performs effective 3D deblurring, significantly reducing the blurring artifacts in the in-focus plane and other planes of the DBT image, thus improving the detection performance of lesions.

Render lighting dataset: A collection of rendered images with varied lighting conditions using blender render engines.

This paper presents the Render Lighting Dataset, featuring 63,648 rendered images of Blender's primitive shapes with various lighting conditions and engines. The images were created using Blender 4.0's Cycles and Eevee Render Engines, with careful attention to detail in texture mapping and UV unwrapping. The HAM10000 dataset, a large collection of multi-source dermatoscopic images of common pigmented skin lesions.

Project description:Training of neural networks for automated diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions is hampered by the small size and lack of diversity of available datasets of dermatoscopic images. We tackle this problem by releasing the HAM10000 ("Human Against Machine with 10000 training images") dataset. We collected dermatoscopic images from different populations acquired and stored by different modalities. Given this diversity we had to apply different acquisition and cleaning methods and developed semi-automatic workflows utilizing specifically trained neural networks. The final dataset consists of 10015 dermatoscopic images which are released as a training set for academic machine learning purposes and are publicly available through the ISIC archive. This benchmark dataset can be used for machine learning and for comparisons with human experts. Cases include a representative collection of all important diagnostic categories in the realm of pigmented lesions. More than 50% of lesions have been confirmed by pathology, while the ground truth for the rest of the cases was either follow-up, expert consensus, or confirmation by in-vivo confocal microscopy.

PFuji-Size dataset: A collection of images and photogrammetry-derived 3D point clouds with ground truth annotations for Fuji apple detection and size estimation in field conditions.

Project description:The PFuji-Size dataset is comprised of a collection of 3D point clouds of Fuji apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Fuji) scanned at different maturity stages and annotated for fruit detection and size estimation. Structure-from-motion and multi-view stereo techniques were used to generate the 3D point clouds of 6 complete Fuji apple trees containing a total of 615 apples. The resulting point clouds were 3D segmented by identifying the 3D points corresponding to each apple (3D instance segmentation), obtaining a single point cloud for each apple. All segmented apples were labelled with ground truth diameter annotations. Since the data was acquired in field conditions and at different maturity stages, the set includes different fruit diameters -from 26.9 mm to 94.8 mm- and different fruit occlusion percentages due to foliage. In addition, 25 apples were photographed 360° in laboratory conditions, obtaining high resolution 3D point clouds of this sub-set. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first publicly available dataset for apple size estimation in field conditions. This dataset was used to evaluate different fruit size estimation methods in the research article titled "In-field apple size estimation using photogrammetry-derived 3D point clouds: comparison of 4 different methods considering fruit occlusion" (Gené-Mola et al., 2021).

A Dataset of 3D Structural and Simulated Transport Properties of Complex Porous Media.

Project description:Physical processes that occur within porous materials have wide-ranging applications including - but not limited to - carbon sequestration, battery technology, membranes, oil and gas, geothermal energy, nuclear waste disposal, water resource management. The equations that describe these physical processes have been studied extensively; however, approximating them numerically requires immense computational resources due to the complex behavior that arises from the geometrically-intricate solid boundary conditions in porous materials. Here, we introduce a new dataset of unprecedented scale and breadth, DRP-372: a catalog of 3D geometries, simulation results, and structural properties of samples hosted on the Digital Rocks Portal. The dataset includes 1736 flow and electrical simulation results on 217 samples, which required more than 500 core years of computation. This data can be used for many purposes, such as constructing empirical models, validating new simulation codes, and developing machine learning algorithms that closely match the extensive purely-physical simulation. This article offers a detailed description of the contents of the dataset including the data collection, simulation schemes, and data validation.
