Typically, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are used in CO<sub>2</sub> electrolyzers, but those suffer from unwanted CO<sub>2</sub> crossover, implying (indirect) energy consumption for generating an excess of CO<sub>2</sub> feed and purification of the KOH anolyte.
