Effect of the Dopant Configuration on the Electronic Transport Properties of Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes.

ABSTRACT: Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) show promise in several applications related to catalysis and electrochemistry. In particular, N-CNTs with a single nitrogen dopant in the unit cell have been extensively studied computationally, but the structure-property correlations between the relative positions of several nitrogen dopants and the electronic transport properties of N-CNTs have not been systematically investigated with accurate hybrid density functional methods. We use hybrid density functional theory and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory to systematically investigate the effect of different substitutional nitrogen doping configurations on the electrical conductivity of N-CNTs. Our results indicate significant variation in the electrical conductivity and the relative energies of the different dopant configurations. The findings can be utilized in the optimization of electrical transport properties of N-CNTs.

Tuneable Dielectric Properties Derived from Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes in PVDF-Based Nanocomposites.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (N-MWNTs) with different structures were synthesized by employing chemical vapor deposition and changing the argon/ethane/nitrogen gas precursor ratio and synthesis time, and broadband dielectric properties of their poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites were investigated. The structure, morphology, and electrical conductivity of synthesized N-MWNTs were assessed via Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and powder conductivity techniques. The melt compounded PVDF nanocomposites manifested significantly high real part of the permittivity (ε') along with low dissipation factor (tan δε) in 0.1 kHz to 1 MHz frequency range, suggesting use as efficient charge-storage materials. Longer synthesis time resulted in enhanced carbon purity as well as higher thermal stability, determined via TGA analysis. The inherent electrical conductivity of N-MWNTs scaled with the carbon purity. The charge-storage ability of the developed PVDF nanocomposites was commensurate with the amount of the nitrogen heteroatom (i.e., self-polarization), carbon purity, and inherent electrical conductivity of N-MWNTs and increased with better dispersion of N-MWNTs in PVDF.

Determination of the electronic transport in type separated carbon nanotubes thin films doped with gold nanocrystals.

Project description:We report a systematic theoretical and experimental investigation on the electronic transport evolution in metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes thin films enriched by gold nanocrystals. We used an ultra-clean production method of both types of single-walled carbon nanotube thin films with/without gold nanocrystals, which were uniformly dispersed in the whole volume of the thin films, causing a modification of the doping level of the films (verified by Raman spectroscopy). We propose a modification of the electronic transport model with the additional high-temperature features that allow us to interpret the transport within a broader temperature range and that are related to the conductivity type of carbon nanotubes. Moreover, we demonstrate, that the proposed model is also working for thin films with the addition of gold nanocrystals, and only a change of the conductivity level of our samples is observed caused by modification of potential barriers between carbon nanotubes. We also find unusual behavior of doped metallic carbon nanotube thin film, which lowers its conductivity due to doping.

Oxygen Evolution Reaction Kinetic Barriers on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:We investigate kinetic barriers for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on singly and doubly nitrogen-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) using the climbing image nudged elastic band method with solvent effects represented by a 45-water-molecule droplet. The studied sites were chosen based on a previous study of the same systems utilizing a thermodynamic model which ignored both solvent effects and kinetic barriers. According to that model, the two studied sites, one on a singly nitrogen-doped CNT and the other on a doubly doped CNT, were approximately equally suitable for OER. For the four-step OER process, however, our reaction barrier calculations showed a clear difference in the rate-determining *OOH formation step between the two systems, with barrier heights differing by more than 0.4 eV. Thus, the simple thermodynamic model may alone be insufficient for identifying optimal OER sites. Of the remaining three reaction steps, the two H2O forming ones were found to be barrierless in all cases. We also performed solvent-free barrier calculations on NCNTs and undoped CNTs. Substantial differences were observed in the energies of the intermediates when the solvent was present. In general, the observed low activation energy barriers for these reactions corroborate both experimental and theoretical findings of the utility of NCNTs for OER catalysis.

Oxygen Evolution Reaction on Nitrogen-Doped Defective Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene.

Project description:The realization of a hydrogen economy would be facilitated by the discovery of a water-splitting electrocatalyst that is efficient, stable under operating conditions, and composed of earth-abundant elements. Density functional theory simulations within a simple thermodynamic model of the more difficult half-reaction, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with a single-walled carbon nanotube as a model catalyst, show that the presence of 0.3-1% nitrogen reduces the required OER overpotential significantly compared to the pristine nanotube. We performed an extensive exploration of systems and active sites with various nitrogen functionalities (graphitic, pyridinic, or pyrrolic) obtained by introducing nitrogen and simple lattice defects (atomic substitutions, vacancies, or Stone-Wales rotations). A number of nitrogen functionalities (graphitic, oxidized pyridinic, and Stone-Wales pyrrolic nitrogen systems) yielded similar low overpotentials near the top of the OER volcano predicted by the scaling relation, which was seen to be closely observed by these systems. The OER mechanism considered was the four-step single-site water nucleophilic attack mechanism. In the active systems, the second or third step, the formation of attached oxo or peroxo moieties, was the potential-determining step of the reaction. The nanotube radius and chirality effects were examined by considering OER in the limit of large radius by studying the analogous graphene-based model systems. They exhibited trends similar to those of the nanotube-based systems but often with reduced reactivity due to weaker attachment of the OER intermediate moieties.

Enhanced CO₂ Adsorption on Activated Carbon Fibers Grafted with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:In this paper, multiscale composites formed by grafting N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNs) on the surface of polyamide (PAN)-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were investigated and their adsorption performance for CO₂ was determined. The spaghetti-like and randomly oriented CNs were homogeneously grown onto ACFs. The pre-immersion of cobalt(II) ions for ACFs made the CNs grow above with a large pore size distribution, decreased the oxidation resistance, and exhibited different predominant N-functionalities after chemical vapor deposition processes. Specifically, the CNs grafted on ACFs with or without pre-immersion of cobalt(II) ions were characterized by the pyridine-like structures of six-member rings or pyrrolic/amine moieties, respectively. In addition, the loss of microporosity on the specific surface area and pore volume exceeded the gain from the generation of the defects from CNs. The adsorption capacity of CO₂ decreased gradually with increasing temperature, implying that CO₂ adsorption was exothermic. The adsorption capacities of CO₂ at 25 °C and 1 atm were between 1.53 and 1.92 mmol/g and the Freundlich equation fit the adsorption data well. The isosteric enthalpy of adsorption, implying physical adsorption, indicated that the growth of CNTs on the ACFs benefit CO₂ adsorption.

Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanodot Hole Transport and Electronic Energy Transfer Layer.

Project description:Electroluminescence efficiency is crucial for the application of quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) in practical devices. We demonstrate that nitrogen-doped carbon nanodot (N-CD) interlayer improves electrical and luminescent properties of QD-LEDs. The N-CDs were prepared by solution-based bottom up synthesis and were inserted as a hole transport layer (HTL) between other multilayer HTL heterojunction and the red-QD layer. The QD-LEDs with N-CD interlayer represented superior electrical rectification and electroluminescent efficiency than those without the N-CD interlayer. The insertion of N-CD layer was found to provoke the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from N-CD to QD layer, as confirmed by time-integrated and -resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Moreover, hole-only devices (HODs) with N-CD interlayer presented high hole transport capability, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy also revealed that the N-CD interlayer reduced the highest hole barrier height. Thus, more balanced carrier injection with sufficient hole carrier transport feasibly lead to the superior electrical and electroluminescent properties of the QD-LEDs with N-CD interlayer. We further studied effect of N-CD interlayer thickness on electrical and luminescent performances for high-brightness QD-LEDs. The ability of the N-CD interlayer to improve both the electrical and luminescent characteristics of the QD-LEDs would be readily exploited as an emerging photoactive material for high-efficiency optoelectronic devices.

Synthesis and Characterization of Nitrogen-doped Carbon Nanotubes Derived from g-C3N4.

Project description:Here, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CNT-N) were synthesized using exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride functionalized with nickel oxides (ex-g-C3N4-NixOy). CNT-N were produced at 900 °C in two steps: (1) ex-g-C3N4-NixOy reduction with hydrogen and (2) ethylene assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The detailed characterization of the produced materials was performed via atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The possible mechanism of nanotubes formation is also proposed.

Nitrogen-doped porous carbon monoliths from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and carbon nanotubes as electrodes for supercapacitors.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped porous activated carbon monoliths (NDP-ACMs) have long been the most desirable materials for supercapacitors. Unique to the conventional template based Lewis acid/base activation methods, herein, we report on a simple yet practicable novel approach to production of the three-dimensional NDP-ACMs (3D-NDP-ACMs). Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) contained carbon nanotubes (CNTs), being pre-dispersed into a tubular level of dispersions, were used as the starting material and the 3D-NDP-ACMs were obtained via a template-free process. First, a continuous mesoporous PAN/CNT based 3D monolith was established by using a template-free temperature-induced phase separation (TTPS). Second, a nitrogen-doped 3D-ACM with a surface area of 613.8 m2/g and a pore volume 0.366 cm3/g was obtained. A typical supercapacitor with our 3D-NDP-ACMs as the functioning electrodes gave a specific capacitance stabilized at 216 F/g even after 3000 cycles, demonstrating the advantageous performance of the PAN/CNT based 3D-NDP-ACMs.

Preparation of Cobalt-Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Activated Peroxymonosulfate Degradation of Carbamazepine.

Project description:Cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3@NCNT-800) were synthesized via a facile and economical approach to investigate the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments. This material demonstrated high catalytic efficiency in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The experimental data revealed that at a neutral pH of 7 and an initial CBZ concentration of 20 mg/L, the application of Co3@NCNT-800 at 0.2 g/L facilitated a degradation rate of 64.7% within 60 min. Mechanistic investigations indicated that the presence of pyridinic nitrogen and cobalt species enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species. Radical scavenging assays and electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirmed that radical and nonradical pathways contributed to CBZ degradation, with the nonradical mechanism being predominant. This research presents the development of a novel PMS catalyst, synthesized through an efficient and stable method, which provides a cost-effective solution for the remediation of organic contaminants in water.

Deactivation and regeneration of carbon nanotubes and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes in catalytic peroxymonosulfate activation for phenol degradation: variation of surface functionalities.

Project description:The reuse, deactivation and regeneration of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) were studied in catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for phenol degradation. The results showed that for catalytic PMS activation, marked deactivation was observed on both CNT and NCNT, resulting in marked variation of the surface functionalities of the catalysts. Catalytic PMS activation led to markedly increased oxygen-containing functionalities and decreased points of zero charge (PZCs) of CNT and NCNT. The catalytic activity of CNT was strongly dependent on the initial PMS concentration but was independent of the initial phenol concentration. Furthermore, the dependency of the CNT activity on the initial PMS concentration closely followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, indicating that the catalytic activation of adsorbed PMS was the rate controlling step. For the used CNT and NCNT, chemical reduction by NaBH4 or thermal treatment regeneration under inert atmosphere could effectively remove surface O-containing functionalities and enhance PZCs, restoring their catalytic activities; meanwhile, the N-containing functionalities of NCNT decreased with regeneration treatment, resulting in a negative impact on catalyst regeneration. The present findings indicate that surface functionalities are closely correlated with catalyst deactivation and regeneration, playing crucial roles in the catalytic activation of PMS.
