(Dimesityl)boron Benzodithiophenes: Synthesis, Electrochemical, Photophysical and Theoretical Characterization.

ABSTRACT: Triarylboranes containing linear or angular benzodithiophene moieties and bearing one or two dimesitylboron units were synthesized. The electrochemical and optical features of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy while DFT calculations were run to analyze the energetic landscape of these systems. For both linear and angular benzodithiophenes, symmetrical disubstitution leads to the highest photoluminescence yields. The linear benzodithiophene disubstituted with two dimesitylboron units proved to be the most interesting and promising molecule as an electron-transport material for organic electronics owing to its LUMO energy level of -2.84 eV which is close to those of commonly used electron transport materials like bathocuproine or bathophenantroline.

Green Perylene Bisimide Dyes: Synthesis, Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties.

Project description:Three asymmetric amino-substituted perylene bisimide dyes with different n-alkyl chain lengths (n = 6, 12, or 18), 1-(N,N-dialkylamino)perylene bisimides (1a-1c), were synthesized under mild condition in high yields and were characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), HRMS (High Resolution Mass Spectrometer), UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra, as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV). These molecules show intense green color in both solution and solid state and are highly soluble in dichloromethane and even in nonpolar solvents, such as hexane. The shapes of the absorption spectra of 1a-1c in solid state and in solution were found to be virtually the same, indicating that the long alkyl chains could efficiently prevent aggregation. They exhibit a unique charge transfer emission in the near-infrared region, of which the peak wavelengths show strong solvatochromism. The dipole moments of the compounds have been estimated using the Lippert-Mataga equation, and upon excitation, they show larger dipole moment changes than that of 1-aminoperylene bisimide (2). Furthermore, all of the compounds exhibit two quasi-reversible one-electron oxidations and two quasi-reversible one-electron reductions in dichloromethane at modest potentials. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on these dyes are reported in order to rationalize their molecular structures and electronic properties.

Boron Complexes with Propiolamidinato Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties.

Project description:Two series of boron derivatives with propiolamidinato ligands, [BPh2{C(C≡CAr)(NR)2}] (Ar = Ph, p-MeOPh, p-FPh, p-Me2NPh, or phen; R = iPr or p-tolyl), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The corresponding propiolamidine (or propargylamidine) proligands have been obtained through sustainable methods. One is the catalytic hydroalkynylation of diisopropylcarbodiimide with different terminal alkynes, using simple ZnEt2 as a precatalyst. Alternatively, to obtain propiolamidines with aromatic groups on the nitrogen atoms, the formation of lithiated derivatives of terminal alkynes by reaction with n-BuLi in air and at room temperature, and subsequent addition to the di-p-tolylcarbodiimide, under the same conditions and using 2-MeTHF as a sustainable solvent, has been used for the first time. After reaction with BPh3, the corresponding boron amidinates were obtained, which are emissive in the solution state. The influence of the different substituents introduced into the ligands on the photophysical properties of the boron compounds has been studied. One of the obtained compounds can be used as a ratiometric fluorescent pH sensor in the acidic range.

Synthesis and photophysical investigations of pyridine-pyrazolate bound boron(III) diaryl complexes.

Project description:This study presents the design and synthetic pathway of unsymmetric ligands based on pyridine-pyrazolate scaffold with Donor-Acceptor (D-A) molecular arrays and their boron complexes to achieve a large Stokes shift. Intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) triggered by the uneven molecular charge distribution from electronically dense pyrazolate (donor) part of the ligands to electron-deficient boron centre (acceptor) resulted in a mega Stokes shift up to 263 nm for selected compounds while retaining the characteristic quantum efficiency and chemical stability. The photophysical properties of derivatization of pyrazolate group in the pyridine-pyrazolate scaffold of diaryl boron complexes were explored based on UV-Visible, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. An interesting dual emission along with quenching behaviour was also observed for 2-(6-methoxynaphthelene) 5-(2-pyridyl) pyrazolate boron complex (P5) due to the formation of a twisted intermolecular charge transfer (TICT) state from a locally excited (LE) state rendering it a potential candidate for sensing applications based on H-Bond quenching. In addition, the extended excited state lifetime of the reported compounds compared to classical boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) makes them suitable as potential probes for analytical applications requiring a longer excited state lifetime.

α- and β-Substituted Metal-Free Phthalocyanines: Synthesis, Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties.

Project description:Two novel phthalonitrile derivatives, bearing two hexyloxy groups and a benzodioxin (or a naphthodioxin) annulated ring, along with their corresponding metal-free phthalocyanines (H2Pc) were prepared. FT-IR, mass, electronic absorption, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy were employed for the characterization of all compounds. The effect of hexadeca substituents on the photophysical properties of metal-free Pcs was investigated. Photophysical properties of H2Pc were studied in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Fluorescent quantum yields of phthalocyanines (Pcs) were calculated and compared with the unsubstituted phthalocyanine. 1,4-Benzoquinone effectively quenched the fluorescence of these compounds in THF. Cyclic and square wave voltammetry methods were applied to metal-free phthalocyanines and Pc-centered oxidation and reduction processes were obtained.

Synthesis and Photophysical, Electrochemical, and DFT Studies of Piperidyl and Pyrrolidinyl Chalcones.

Project description:Small organic molecules with interesting optical and electrochemical properties find applications as organic luminescent materials. In this work, we report the synthesis of novel chalcones with D-A-D and D-A-D-A architecture, followed by their optical, electrochemical, and computational studies. The absorption band of these compounds occurs at 360-480 nm with emission maxima appearing around 513-552 nm. The large Stokes shifts (Δλ) for all compounds (90-132 nm) suggest intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the excited states. The molar absorptivity and fluorescence quantum yields were found to be in the range of 1.7-4.26 × 104 M-1 cm-1 and 0.29-0.39, respectively. The electrochemical parameters were determined by using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of all compounds were made by using B3LYP/G (d,p) functionals in chloroform and were found to have a good correlation with experimental results. Preliminary studies of absorption, photoluminescence, CV, and their theoretical correlation suggest that these compounds may be optimized for their applications in optoelectronics, sensing, and bioimaging.

Clickable azide-functionalized bromoarylaldehydes - synthesis and photophysical characterization.

Project description:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of three azide-functionalized fluorophores and their covalent attachment as triazoles in Huisgen-type cycloadditions with model alkynes. Besides two ortho- and para-bromo-substituted benzaldehydes, the azide functionalization of a fluorene-based structure will be presented. The copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) of the so-synthesized azide-functionalized bromocarbaldehydes with terminal alkynes, exhibiting different degrees of steric demand, was performed in high efficiency. Finally, we investigated the photophysical properties of the azide-functionalized arenes and their covalently linked triazole derivatives to gain deeper insight towards the effect of these covalent linkers on the emission behavior.

Impact of Bidentate Pyridyl-Mesoionic Carbene Ligands: Structural, (Spectro)Electrochemical, Photophysical, and Theoretical Investigations on Ruthenium(II) Complexes.

Project description:We present here new synthetic strategies for the isolation of a series of Ru(II) complexes with pyridyl-mesoionic carbene ligands (MIC) of the 1,2,3-triazole-5-ylidene type, in which the bpy ligands (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) of the archetypical [Ru(bpy)3]2+ have been successively replaced by one, two, or three pyridyl-MIC ligands. Three new complexes have been isolated and investigated via NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The incorporation of one MIC unit shifts the potential of the metal-centered oxidation about 160 mV to more cathodic potential in cyclic voltammetry, demonstrating the extraordinary σ-donor ability of the pyridyl-MIC ligand, while the π-acceptor capacities are dominated by the bpy ligand, as indicated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroelectrochemistry (EPR-SEC). The replacement of all bpy ligands by the pyridyl-MIC ligand results in an anoidic shift of the ligand-centered reduction by 390 mV compared to the well-established [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complex. In addition, UV/vis/NIR-SEC in combination with theoretical calculations provided detailed insights into the electronic structures of the respective redox states, taking into account the total number of pyridyl-MIC ligands incorporated in the Ru(II) complexes. The luminescence quantum yield and lifetimes were determined by time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy. An estimation of the excited state redox potentials conclusively showed that the pyridyl-MIC ligand can tune the photoredox activity of the isolated complexes to stronger photoreductants. These observations can provide new strategies for the design of photocatalysts and photosensitizers based on MICs.

Synthesis and photophysical characterization of fluorescent indole nucleoside analogues.

Project description:Fluorescent nucleosides are useful chemical tools for biochemical research and are frequently incorporated into nucleic acids for a variety of applications. The most widely utilized fluorescent nucleoside is 2-aminopurine-2'-deoxyribonucleoside (2APN). However, 2APN is limited by a moderate Stokes shift, molar extinction coefficient, and quantum yield. We recently reported 4-cyanoindole-2'-deoxyribonucleoside (4CIN), which offers superior photophysical characteristics in comparison to 2APN. To further improve upon 4CIN, a focused library of additional analogues combining the structural features of 2APN and 4CIN were synthesized and their photophysical properties were quantified. Nucleosides 2-6 were found to possess diverse photophysical properties with some features superior to 4CIN. In addition, the structure-function relationship data gained from 1-6 can inform the design of next-generation fluorescent indole nucleosides.

Potential amoebicidal activity of hydrazone derivatives: synthesis, characterization, electrochemical behavior, theoretical study and evaluation of the biological activity.

Project description:Four new hydrazones were synthesized by the condensation of the selected hydrazine and the appropriate nitrobenzaldehyde. A complete characterization was done employing 1H- and 13C-NMR, electrochemical techniques and theoretical studies. After the characterization and electrochemical analysis of each compound, amoebicidal activity was tested in vitro against the HM1:IMSS strain of Entamoeba histolytica. The results showed the influence of the nitrobenzene group and the hydrazone linkage on the amoebicidal activity. meta-Nitro substituted compound 2 presents a promising amoebicidal activity with an IC50 = 0.84 μM, which represents a 7-fold increase in cell growth inhibition potency with respect to metronidazole (IC50 = 6.3 μM). Compounds 1, 3, and 4 show decreased amoebicidal activity, with IC50 values of 7, 75 and 23 µM, respectively, as a function of the nitro group position on the aromatic ring. The observed differences in the biological activity could be explained not only by the redox potential of the molecules, but also by their capacity to participate in the formation of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Redox potentials as well as the amoebicidal activity can be described with parameters obtained from the DFT analysis.

Project description:Two new functionalized 4,4'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines that were end-capped with cyanoacrylic acid or cyanoacrylic acid ester anchoring groups, which might allow their efficient functionalization on TiO2 or other metal-oxide semiconductor surfaces, have been synthesized and characterized by electrochemical, photophysical, and spectroscopic measurements. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of these 4,4'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines with extended π systems, in particular their LUMO energies, make them promising candidates to build up inorganic-organic hybrid photosensitizers for the sensitization of metal-oxide semiconductors (e.g., TiO2 nanoparticles and/or nanotubes).
