Catalyst-Free Hydrodefluorination of Perfluoroarenes with NaBH₄.

ABSTRACT: Presented is an economical means of removing fluorine from various highly fluorinated arenes using NaBH₄. The procedure was adapted for different classes of perfluoroarenes. A novel isomer of an emerging class of organic dyes based on the carbazole phthalonitrile motif was succinctly synthesized in two steps from tetrafluorophthalonitrile, demonstrating the utility of the hydrodefluorination procedure. Initial exploration of the dye shows it to be photoactive and capable of facilitating contrathermodynamic styrenoid E/Z isomerization.

Catalyst free N-formylation of aromatic and aliphatic amines exploiting reductive formylation of CO2 using NaBH4.

Project description:Herein, we report a sustainable approach for N-formylation of aromatic as well as aliphatic amines using sodium borohydride and carbon dioxide gas. The developed approach is catalyst free, and does not need pressure or a specialized reaction assembly. The reductive formylation of CO2 with sodium borohydride generates formoxy borohydride species in situ, as confirmed by 1H and 11B NMR spectroscopy. The in situ formation of formoxy borohydride species is prominent in formamide based solvents and is critical for the success of the N-formylation reactions. The formoxy borohydride is also found to promote transamidation reactions as a competitive pathway along with reductive functionalization of CO2 with amine leading to N-formylation of amines.

High pressure polymorphism of LiBH4 and of NaBH4.

Project description:The pressure-induced structural changes in LiBH4 and in NaBH4 have been investigated experimentally up to 290 GPa by coupling Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. This data set is also analysed in the light of Density Functional Theory calculations performed up to 600 GPa. The [BH4]- unit appears to be remarkably resistant under pressure. NaBH4 remains stable in the known Pnma γ-phase up to 200 GPa and calculations predict a transition to a metallic polymeric C2/c phase at about 480 GPa. LiBH4 is confirmed to exhibit a richer polymorphism. A new Pnma orthorhombic phase VI is found to be stable above 60 GPa and there are hints of a possible phase VII above 160 GPa. DFT calculations predict that two other high pressure LiBH4 phases should appear at about 290 and 428 GPa. A very slight solubility of H2 inside phases II, III and V of LiBH4 is observed. A NaBH4(H2)0.5 complex is predicted to be stable above 150 GPa.

Chemoselective catalytic hydrodefluorination of trifluoromethylalkenes towards mono-/gem-di-fluoroalkenes under metal-free conditions.

Project description:Fluorine-containing moieties show significant effects in improving the properties of functional molecules. Consequently, efficient methods for installing them into target compounds are in great demand, especially those enabled by metal-free catalysis. Here we show a diazaphospholene-catalyzed hydrodefluorination of trifluoromethylalkenes to chemoselectively construct gem-difluoroalkenes and terminal monofluoroalkenes by simple adjustment of the reactant stoichiometry. This metal-free hydrodefluorination features mild reaction conditions, good group compatibility, and almost quantitative yields for both product types. Stoichiometric experiments indicated a stepwise mechanism: hydridic addition to fluoroalkenes and subsequent β-F elimination from hydrophosphination intermediates. Density functional theory calculations disclosed the origin of chemoselectivity, regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, suggesting an electron-donating effect of the alkene-terminal fluorine atom.

Catalyzing the Hydrodefluorination of CF3-Substituted Alkenes by PhSiH3. H• Transfer from a Nickel Hydride.

Project description:The hydrodefluorination of CF3-substituted alkenes can be catalyzed by a nickel(II) hydride bearing a pincer ligand. The catalyst loading can be as low as 1 mol%. gem-Difluoroalkenes containing a number of functional groups can be formed in good to excellent yields by a radical mechanism initiated by H• transfer from the nickel hydride. The relative reactivity of various substrates supports the proposed mechanism, as does a TEMPO trapping experiment.

In Situ Polycondensation Synthesis of NiS-g-C3N4 Nanocomposites for Catalytic Hydrogen Generation from NaBH4.

Project description:The nanocomposites of S@g-C3N4 and NiS-g-C3N4 were synthesized for catalytic hydrogen production from the methanolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Several experimental methods were applied to characterize these nanocomposites such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The calculation of NiS crystallites revealed an average size of 8.0 nm. The ESEM and TEM images of S@g-C3N4 showed a 2D sheet structure and NiS-g-C3N4 nanocomposites showed the sheet materials that were broken up during the growth process, revealing more edge sites. The surface areas were 40, 50, 62, and 90 m2/g for S@g-C3N4, 0.5 wt.% NiS, 1.0 wt.% NiS, and 1.5 wt.% NiS, respectively. The pore volume of S@g-C3N4 was 0.18 cm3, which was reduced to 0.11 cm3 in 1.5 wt.% NiS owing to the incorporation of NiS particles into the nanosheet. We found that the in situ polycondensation preparation of S@g-C3N4 and NiS-g-C3N4 nanocomposites increased the porosity of the composites. The average values of the optical energy gap for S@g-C3N4 were 2.60 eV and decreased to 2.50, 2.40, and 2.30 eV as the NiS concentration increased from 0.5 to 1.5 wt.%. All NiS-g-C3N4 nanocomposite catalysts had an emission band that was visible in the 410-540 nm range and the intensity of this peak decreased as the NiS concentration increased from 0.5 to 1.5 wt.%. The hydrogen generation rates increased with increasing content of NiS nanosheet. Moreover, the sample 1.5 wt.% NiS showed the highest production rate of 8654 mL/g·min due to the homogeneous surface organization.

Carbon-free H2 production from ammonia triggered at room temperature with an acidic RuO2/?-Al2O3 catalyst.

Project description:Ammonia has been suggested as a carbon-free hydrogen source, but a convenient method for producing hydrogen from ammonia with rapid initiation has not been developed. Ideally, this method would require no external energy input. We demonstrate hydrogen production by exposing ammonia and O2 at room temperature to an acidic RuO2/?-Al2O3 catalyst. Because adsorption of ammonia onto the catalyst is exothermic, the catalyst bed is rapidly heated to the catalytic ammonia autoignition temperature, and subsequent oxidative decomposition of ammonia produces hydrogen. A differential calorimeter combined with a volumetric gas adsorption analyzer revealed a large quantity of heat evolved both with chemisorption of ammonia onto RuO2 and acidic sites on the ?-Al2O3 and with physisorption of multiple ammonia molecules.

Metal-Free Heptazine-Based Porous Polymeric Network as Highly Efficient Catalyst for CO2 Capture and Conversion.

Project description:The capture and catalytic conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals is a promising and sustainable approach to tackle the global warming and energy crisis. The nitrogen-rich porous organic polymers are excellent materials for CO2 capture and separation. Herein, we present a nitrogen-rich heptazine-based microporous polymer for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides in the absence of metals and solvents. HMP-TAPA, being rich in the nitrogen site, showed a high CO2 uptake of 106.7 mg/g with an IAST selectivity of 30.79 toward CO2 over N2. Furthermore, HMP-TAPA showed high chemical and water stability without loss of any structural integrity. Besides CO2 sorption, the catalytic activity of HMP-TAPA was checked for the cycloaddition of CO2 and terminal epoxides, resulting in cyclic carbonate with high conversion (98%). They showed remarkable recyclability up to 5 cycles without loss of activity. Overall, this study represents a rare demonstration of the rational design of POPs (HMP-TAPA) for multiple applications.

Si3C Monolayer as an Efficient Metal-Free Catalyst for Nitrate Electrochemical Reduction: A Computational Study.

Project description:Nitrate electroreduction reaction to ammonia (NO3ER) holds great promise for both nitrogen pollution removal and valuable ammonia synthesis, which are still dependent on transition-metal-based catalysts at present. However, metal-free catalysts with multiple advantages for such processes have been rarely reported. Herein, by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, in which the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional is obtained by considering the possible van der Waals (vdW) interaction using the DFT+D3 method, we explored the potential of several two-dimensional (2D) silicon carbide monolayers as metal-free NO3ER catalysts. Our results revealed that the excellent synergistic effect between the three Si active sites within the Si3C monolayer enables the sufficient activation of NO3- and promotes its further hydrogenation into NO2*, NO*, and NH3, making the Si3C monolayer exhibit high NO3ER activity with a low limiting potential of -0.43 V. In particular, such an electrochemical process is highly dependent on the pH value of the electrolytes, in which acidic conditions are more favorable for NO3ER. Moreover, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations demonstrated the high stability of the Si3C monolayer. In addition, the Si3C monolayer shows a low formation energy, excellent electronic properties, a superior suppression effect on competing reactions, and high stability, offering significant advantages for its experimental synthesis and practical applications in electrocatalysis. Thus, a Si3C monolayer can perform as a promising NO3ER catalyst, which would open a new avenue to further develop novel metal-free catalysts for NO3ER.

Zr(HSO4)4: Green, efficient and reusable catalyst for one-pot synthesis of 1,8-dioxooctahydroxanthene under solvent-free conditions.

Project description:Many methods have been used to synthesize xanthene derivatives using different catalysts. However, some of these methodologies have not been entirely satisfactory. Most of the mentioned methods have disadvantages such as low yields, prolonged reaction times, harsh reaction conditions and the requirement of expensive catalysis and use of toxic organic solvent. In this research, a green and highly efficient procedure for the one-pot synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydro-xanthenes has been developed. Zr(HSO4)4 catalyst was used as an efficient and recoverable catalyst for synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydro-xanthene derivatives via cyclocondensation of dimedone and aromatic aldehydes in solvent-free conditions. There are no examples of the use of Zr(HSO4)4 for the synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydro-xanthene derivatives. The present method offers several advantages such as green, highly efficient, recoverable, reusable, simple work-up and simple purification of products. The structure of the synthesized products was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (Ft-IR) and Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) analyzes. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized compounds was determined by agar disk diffusion method against gram-positive (S. aureus bacteria) and gram-negative (E. coli bacteria) microorganisms. Among the synthesized compounds (3a-3j), 3h compound showed the highest antibacterial effect by forming an inhibitory diameter zone of 15 mm around the disc containing 2000 mg of 3h-compound against gram-positive (S. aureus bacteria). 1. Chromium-free Cu@Mg/γ-Al2O3 - an active catalyst for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol.

Project description:Development of a chromium (Cr)-free hydrogenation catalyst is very important to replace the existing hazardous Cr based catalyst used in the furfural hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol. Herein, we report synthesis of well-dispersed copper nanoparticles supported on hydrothermally stable magnesium doped alumina (Cu@Mg/γ-Al2O3) for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. The prepared catalyst was characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), Surface Area Analysis (SAA), High Resolution-Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), Temperature Programmed Reduction/Desorption (TPR/TPD) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) to understand textural properties of the catalyst. The prepared catalyst was found to be highly active and selective with 99% conversion of furfural and 94% selectivity for furfuryl alcohol under solvent free conditions at 443.15 K and 2 MPa of hydrogen pressure. It was also observed that the Cu@Mg/γ-Al2O3 catalyst is reusable (up to six runs) while maintaining its high activity and selectivity (≥94%) in the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol.
