Room Temperature Phosphorescence Emission From Multi-States.

ABSTRACT: Organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have received considerable attention due to their fascinating photophysical properties. During the past decade, various organic luminogens exhibiting RTP emission in solid states were reported. However, the phosphorescence emission of organic compounds can hardly be observed in their solutions at room temperature. Herein, we reported two fluorene derivatives that can emit RTP in degassed organic solvents, polymer doped film, and crystalline states. Furthermore, those RTP luminogens emitted different colors with different phosphorescence lifetimes in multi-states. These results indicated that the phosphorescence performance can be adjusted flexibly in different condensed states. To our knowledge, this is the first example possessing diverse organic RTP at multi-states, including solution state.

Crystallization-Enhanced Emission and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Cyclic Triimidazole-Monohexyl Thiophene Derivatives.

Project description:The development of organic room-temperature phosphorescent (ORTP) materials represents an active field of research due to their significant advantages with respect to their organometallic counterparts. Two cyclic triimidazole (TT) derivatives bearing one and three hexyl-thiophene moieties, TT-HThio and TT-(HThio)3, have been prepared and characterized. Both compounds display enhanced quantum yields in their crystalline form with respect to those in a solution state, revealing crystallization-enhanced emissive (CEE) behavior. Importantly, while single fluorescence is observed in solution, crystalline powders also feature dual ORTP, whose respective molecular and aggregate origins have been disclosed through X-ray diffraction analysis and DFT/TDDFT calculations. The relation between the photophysical properties of TT-HThio and its crystallinity degree has been confirmed by a decrease in photoluminescent quantum yield (Φ) and loss of vibronic resolution when its crystals are ground in a mortar, revealing mechanochromic behavior and confirming CEE features.

White light emission from a single organic molecule with dual phosphorescence at room temperature.

Project description:The development of single molecule white light emitters is extremely challenging for pure phosphorescent metal-free system at room temperature. Here we report a single pure organic phosphor, namely 4-chlorobenzoyldibenzothiophene, emitting white room temperature phosphorescence with Commission Internationale de l'Éclair-age coordinates of (0.33, 0.35). Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the white light emission is emerged from dual phosphorescence, which emit from the first and second excited triplet states. We also demonstrate the validity of the strategy to achieve metal-free pure phosphorescent single molecule white light emitters by intrasystem mixing dual room temperature phosphorescence arising from the low- and high-lying triplet states.The development of single molecule white light-emitters is extremely challenging for pure phosphorescent metal-free systems at room temperature. Here the authors show a single pure organic room temperature phosphor, 4-chlorobenzoyldibenzothiophene, utilizing the emission from both T1 and T2 states.

A facile strategy for realizing room temperature phosphorescence and single molecule white light emission.

Project description:Research on materials with pure organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their application as organic single-molecule white light emitters is a hot area and relies on the design of highly efficient pure organic RTP luminogens. Herein, a facile strategy of heavy-atom-participated anion-π+ interactions is proposed to construct RTP-active organic salt compounds (1,2,3,4-tetraphenyloxazoliums with different counterions). Those compounds with heavy-atom counterions (bromide and iodide ions) exhibit outstanding RTP due to the external heavy atom effect via anion-π+ interactions, evidently supported by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculation. Their single-molecule white light emission is realized by tuning the degree of crystallization. Such white light emission also performs well in polymer matrices and their use in 3D printing is demonstrated by white light lampshades.

Modulating Room-Temperature Phosphorescence-To-Phosphorescence Mechanochromism by Halogen Exchange.

Project description:Modulating the stimulus-responsiveness of a luminescent crystal is challenging owing to the complex interdependent nature of its controlling factors, such as molecular structure, molecular conformation, crystal packing, optical properties, and amorphization behavior. Herein, we demonstrate a halogen-exchange approach that disentangles this problem, thereby realizing the modulation of room-temperature phosphorescence-to-phosphorescence mechanochromism. Replacing the bromine atoms in a brominated thienyl diketone with chlorine atoms afforded isostructural crystals; i.e., molecules with different halogen atoms exhibited the same molecular conformation and crystal packing. Consequently, amorphization behavior toward mechanical stimulation was also the same, and the phosphorescence of amorphous states originated from the same conformer of each diketone. In contrast, the phosphorescence properties of each conformer were modulated differently, which is ascribable to heavy atom effects, resulting in the modulation of the mechanochromism. Thus, halogen exchange is a promising approach for modulating the stimulus-responsive photofunctions of crystals involving spin-forbidden processes.

White-Light Emission and Tunable Luminescence Colors of Polyimide Copolymers Based on FRET and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence.

Project description:Thermally stable copolyimide (CoPI) films exhibiting high optical transparency and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) were prepared by copolymerizing fluorescent dianhydride and brominated phosphorescent dianhydride with an alicyclic diamine. The CoPI films underwent a 5 wt % degradation at a temperature higher than 349 °C and exhibited dual fluorescent and phosphorescent emissions owing to their efficient Förster resonance energy transfer from the fluorescent to phosphorescent dianhydride moieties in the main chains, followed by an intersystem crossing from the singlet to triplet state of the latter moiety atoms. The CoPIs displayed bright RTP under a vacuum with various colors produced when adjusting the copolymerization ratio. CoPI with 5 mol % phosphorescent moiety (CoPI-05) emitted white light with high optical transparency owing to the suppression of the PI chain aggregation that causes a yellowish coloration. The copolymerization of fluorescent and phosphorescent PI moieties can control the photoluminescent properties of PI films and is applicable to color-tunable solid-state emitters, ratiometric oxygen sensors, and solar-spectrum converters.

White-light emission from a single heavy atom-free molecule with room temperature phosphorescence, mechanochromism and thermochromism.

Project description:Two heavy atom-free luminophores (SHB2t and SDB2t) with simple molecular structures have been synthesized via Suzuki coupling reactions in which both display white-light emission with prompt fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the solid state. The impressive RTP of the luminophores is produced by a synergistic effect of the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding in addition to the spin-orbit coupling of the sulfonyl oxygen atoms and the moderate singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔEST). These factors facilitate the intersystem crossing (ISC) process to generate triplet excitons in which the molecular conformations become immobilized to effectively suppress radiationless decay. Under the stimuli of mechanical force and solvent vapor, the RTP of SHB2t and SDB2t can be simply turned off and on by breaking and reforming the robust hydrogen bonding, which leads to remarkable and reversible mechanochromism between white and deep-blue emission. Moreover, two different thermochromic processes have been observed for the pristine and ground samples of SDB2t, in which a tricolor switching system between white, deep-blue and blue emission has been successfully achieved through the sequential control of grinding, heating and fuming. From detailed studies we have determined that the mechanism for the thermochromism of SDB2t is correlated with the rearrangement of the white-light emitting molecules to a new packing mode without RTP emission.

Purely Organic Microparticles Showing Ultralong Room Temperature Phosphorescence.

Project description:Currently, organic phosphorescent particles are heavily used in sensing and imaging. Up to now, most of these particles contain poisonous and/or expensive metal complexes. Environmentally friendly systems are therefore highly desired. A purely amorphous system consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) particles with incorporated N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzidine emitter molecules is presented in this work. Single particles with sizes between 400 and 840 nm show-depending on the environment-bright fluorescence and phosphorescence. The latter is observed when oxygen is not in the proximity of the emitting dye molecules. These particles can scavenge singlet oxygen, which is produced during the photoexcitation process, by incorporating it into the polymer matrix. This renders their use to be unharmful for the surrounding matter with possible application in marking schemes for living bodies.

Project description:We describe the red phosphorescence exhibited by a class of structurally simple benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazoles at room temperature. The photophysical properties of these molecules in deoxygenated cyclohexane, including their absorption spectra, steady-state photoluminescence and excitation spectra, and phosphorescence lifetimes, are presented. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations were carried out to better understand the electronic excited states of these benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazoles and why they are capable of phosphorescence.

A room temperature phosphorescence encoding [2]rotaxane molecular shuttle.

Project description:A novel bistable molecular shuttle, composed of a Pt(ii) porphyrin-containing dibenzo[24]crown-8 macrocycle threaded onto two different recognition sites (secondary dialkylammonium (NH2+) and 4,4'-bipyridinium (Bpym2+) units), and the anthracene (Anth) moiety as one terminal stopper, was synthesized by click chemistry. Its acid-base switchable shuttling could be addressed by both the room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission signals of the Pt(ii) porphyrin moiety and the fluorescence emission of the Anth unit, as well as their lifetime changes. When the macrocycle was switched to be located on the NH2+ site close to Anth, the Pt(ii) porphyrin moiety exhibited strong RTP emission, excited in the Anth band at 370 nm. This was due to the distance-dependent efficient singlet energy transfer between the Anth unit and the porphyrin moiety, followed by intersystem crossing from a singlet to a triplet state in Pt(ii) porphyrin, while its RTP emission dramatically decreased when located on the Bpym2+ site far from the Anth unit. When excited in the porphyrin band at 402 nm, the RTP emission lifetimes changed obviously. This is the first rotaxane-type molecular shuttle whose shuttling has been encoded by RTP signals.

White Emissions Containing Room Temperature Phosphorescence from Different Excited States of a D-π-A Molecule Depending on the Aggregate States.

Project description:Development of pure organic molecular materials with room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their applications for white emitters have received significant attentions recently. Herein, a D-π-A molecule (DMACPPY) which can realize white emitting under ambient conditions both in the crystal state and the doped-film state by combining RTP with two fluorescent emissions is reported. The white emission from the crystalline sample of DMACPPY consists fluorescence from S2 (the second excited singlet state) and S1 (the first excited singlet state) along with RTP from T1 (the first excited triplet state), namely, SST-type white light. While, the white emission from the poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) film doped with DMACPPY contains fluorescences from S2 and S1 , and RTP from T2 (the second excited triplet state) rather than T1 (STS type). DMACPPY cannot exhibit white spectrum within alternative crystalline state since inferior RTP intensity despite similar ternary emissions. The results demonstrate that the emissive properties for excited states of DMACPPY can be tuned by changing the aggregate state from crystalline to dispersion state in PMMA film. This new RTP emitter fulfills the talent for white emitting and achieves dual-mode white emissions, invisibly, expands the application range for pure organic and heavy atom-free RTP materials.
