Logic operations with active topological defects.

ABSTRACT: Logic operations performed by semiconductor-based transistors are the basis of modern computing. There is considerable interest in creating autonomous materials systems endowed with the capability to make decisions. In this work, we introduce the concept of using topological defects in active matter to perform logic operations. When an extensile active stress in a nematic liquid crystal is turned on, +1/2 defects can self-propel, in analogy to electron transport under a voltage gradient. By relying on hydrodynamic simulations of active nematics, we demonstrate that patterns of activity, when combined with surfaces imparting certain orientations, can be used to control the formation and transport of +1/2 defects. We further show that asymmetric high- and low-activity patterns can be used to create effective defect gates, tunnels, and amplifiers. The proposed active systems offer the potential to perform computations and transmit information in active soft materials, including actin-, tubulin-, and cell-based systems.

Flow around topological defects in active nematic films.

Project description:We study the active flow around isolated defects and the self-propulsion velocity of +1/2 defects in an active nematic film with both viscous dissipation (with viscosity η ) and frictional damping Γ with a substrate. The interplay between these two dissipation mechanisms is controlled by the hydrodynamic dissipation length ℓd=η/Γ that screens the flows. For an isolated defect, in the absence of screening from other defects, the size of the shear vorticity around the defect is controlled by the system size R . In the presence of friction that leads to a finite value of ℓd , the vorticity field decays to zero on the lengthscales larger than ℓd . We show that the self-propulsion velocity of +1/2 defects grows with R in small systems where R<ℓd , while in the infinite system limit or when R≫ℓd , it approaches a constant value determined by ℓd .

Parallel Logic Operations in Electrically Tunable Two-Dimensional Homojunctions.

Project description:Two-dimensional materials show great potential for future electronics beyond silicon materials. Here, we report an exotic multiple-port device based on multiple electrically tunable planar p-n homojunctions formed in a two-dimensional (2D) ambipolar semiconductor, tungsten diselenide (WSe2). In this device, we prepare multiple gates consisting of a global gate and several local gates, by which electrostatically induced holes and electrons are simultaneously accumulated in a WSe2 channel, and furthermore, at the boundaries, p-n junctions are formed as directly visualized by Kelvin probe force microscopy. Therefore, in addition to the gate voltages in our device, the drain/source bias can also be used to switch the 2D WSe2 channel on/off due to the rectification effect of the formed p-n junctions. More importantly, when the voltage on the global gate electrode is altered, all p-n junctions are affected, which makes it possible to perform parallel logic operations.

Performing optical logic operations by a diffractive neural network.

Project description:Optical logic operations lie at the heart of optical computing, and they enable many applications such as ultrahigh-speed information processing. However, the reported optical logic gates rely heavily on the precise control of input light signals, including their phase difference, polarization, and intensity and the size of the incident beams. Due to the complexity and difficulty in these precise controls, the two output optical logic states may suffer from an inherent instability and a low contrast ratio of intensity. Moreover, the miniaturization of optical logic gates becomes difficult if the extra bulky apparatus for these controls is considered. As such, it is desirable to get rid of these complicated controls and to achieve full logic functionality in a compact photonic system. Such a goal remains challenging. Here, we introduce a simple yet universal design strategy, capable of using plane waves as the incident signal, to perform optical logic operations via a diffractive neural network. Physically, the incident plane wave is first spatially encoded by a specific logic operation at the input layer and further decoded through the hidden layers, namely, a compound Huygens' metasurface. That is, the judiciously designed metasurface scatters the encoded light into one of two small designated areas at the output layer, which provides the information of output logic states. Importantly, after training of the diffractive neural network, all seven basic types of optical logic operations can be realized by the same metasurface. As a conceptual illustration, three logic operations (NOT, OR, and AND) are experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies.

Integer topological defects offer a methodology to quantify and classify active cell monolayers.

Project description:Monolayers of confluent elongated cells are frequently considered active nematics, featuring ±12 topological defects. In extensile systems, where cells extend further along their long axis, they can accumulate at +12 defects and escape from -12 defects. Nevertheless, collective dynamics surrounding integer defects remain insufficiently understood. We induce diverse + 1 topological defects (asters, spirals, and targets) within neural progenitor cell monolayers using microfabricated patterns. Remarkably, cells migrate toward the cores of all + 1 defects, challenging existing theories and conventional extensile/contractile dichotomy, which predicts escape from highly bent spirals and targets. By combining experiments and a continuum theory derived from a cell-level model, we identify previously overlooked nonlinear active forces driving this unexpected accumulation toward defect cores, providing a unified framework to explain cell behavior across defect types. Our findings establish + 1 defects as probes to uncover key nonlinear features of active nematics, offering a methodology to characterize and classify cell monolayers.

Multifield-Controlled Terahertz Hybrid Metasurface for Switches and Logic Operations.

Project description:Terahertz (THz) meta-devices are considered to be a promising framework for constructing integrated photonic circuitry, which is significant for processing the upsurge of data brought about by next-generation telecommunications. However, present active metasurfaces are typically restricted by a single external driving field, a single modulated frequency, fixed switching speed, and deficiency in logical operation functions which prevents devices from further practical applications. Here, to overcome these limitations, we propose a hybrid THz metasurface consisting of vanadium dioxide (VO2) and germanium (Ge) that enables electrical and optical tuning methods individually or simultaneously and theoretically investigate its performance. Each of the two materials is arranged in the meta-atom to dominate the resonance strength of toroidal or magnetic dipoles. Controlled by either or both of the external excitations, the device can switch on or off at four different frequencies, possessing two temporal degrees of freedom in terms of manipulation when considering the nonvolatility of VO2 and ultrafast photogenerated carriers of Ge. Furthermore, the "AND" and "OR" logic operations are respectively achieved at two adjacent frequency bands by weighing normalized transmission amplitude. This work may provide an auspicious paradigm of THz components, such as dynamic filters, multiband switches, and logical modulators, potentially promoting the design and implementation of multifunctional electro-optical devices in future THz computing and communication.

Elementary cellular automata realized by stateful three-memristor logic operations.

Project description:Cellular automata (CA) are computational systems that exhibit complex global behavior arising from simple local rules, making them a fascinating candidate for various research areas. However, challenges such as limited flexibility and efficiency on conventional hardware platforms still exist. In this study, we propose a memristor-based circuit for implementing elementary cellular automata (ECA) by extending the stateful three-memristor logic operations derived from material implication (IMP) logic gates. By leveraging the inherent physical properties of memristors, this approach offers simplicity, minimal operational steps, and high flexibility in implementing ECA rules by adjusting the circuit parameters. The mathematical principles governing circuit parameters are analyzed, and the evolution of multiple ECA rules is successfully demonstrated, showcasing the robustness in handling the stochastic nature of memristors. This approach provides a hardware solution for ECA implementation and opens up new research opportunities in the hardware implementation of CA.

Nonlinear co-generation of graphene plasmons for optoelectronic logic operations.

Project description:Surface plasmons in graphene provide a compelling strategy for advanced photonic technologies thanks to their tight confinement, fast response and tunability. Recent advances in the field of all-optical generation of graphene's plasmons in planar waveguides offer a promising method for high-speed signal processing in nanoscale integrated optoelectronic devices. Here, we use two counter propagating frequency combs with temporally synchronized pulses to demonstrate deterministic all-optical generation and electrical control of multiple plasmon polaritons, excited via difference frequency generation (DFG). Electrical tuning of a hybrid graphene-fibre device offers a precise control over the DFG phase-matching, leading to tunable responses of the graphene's plasmons at different frequencies across a broadband (0 ~ 50 THz) and provides a powerful tool for high-speed logic operations. Our results offer insights for plasmonics on hybrid photonic devices based on layered materials and pave the way to high-speed integrated optoelectronic computing circuits.

Allosteric DNAzyme-based DNA logic circuit: operations and dynamic analysis.

Project description:Recently, due to the dual roles of DNA and enzyme, DNAzyme has been widely used in the field of DNA circuit, which has a wide range of applications in bio-engineered system, information processing and biocomputing. In fact, the activity of DNAzymes was regulated by subunits assembly, pH control and metal ions triggers. However, those regulations required to change the sequences of whole DNAzyme, as separating parts and inserting extra DNA sequence. Inspired by the allosteric regulation of proteins in nature, a new allosteric strategy is proposed to regulate the activity of DNAzyme without DNA sequences changes. In this strategy, DNA strand displacement was used to regulate the DNAzyme structure, through which the activity of DNAzyme was well controlled. The strategy was applied to E6-type DNAzymes, and the operations of DNA logic circuit (YES, OR, AND, cascading and feedback) were established and simulated with the dynamic analyses. The allosteric regulation has potential to construct more complicated molecular systems, which can be applied to bio-sensing and detection.

DNA Dumbbell and Chameleon Silver Nanoclusters for miRNA Logic Operations.

Project description:Multiplex miRNA analysis is a fundamental issue for exploring a complex biological system and early diagnosis of miRNA-related diseases. Herein, we have developed a series of novel logic gates for miRNA analysis coupling DNA nanostructures and chameleon silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). DNA dumbbell structures are firstly designed with two independent nucleation sequences for AgNCs at the 5' and 3' ends, respectively. By introducing different miRNA inputs, separations of two AgNCs are controlled and the fluorescence property of AgNCs changes. By studying the ratiometric fluorescence responses, sensitive and selective analysis of multiple miRNAs can be achieved. The present work provides powerful tools for miRNA diagnostics and may also guide future DNA nanostructure-based logic gates.

Topological computation based on direct magnetic logic communication.

Project description:Non-uniform magnetic domains with non-trivial topology, such as vortices and skyrmions, are proposed as superior state variables for nonvolatile information storage. So far, the possibility of logic operations using topological objects has not been considered. Here, we demonstrate numerically that the topology of the system plays a significant role for its dynamics, using the example of vortex-antivortex pairs in a planar ferromagnetic film. Utilising the dynamical properties and geometrical confinement, direct logic communication between the topological memory carriers is realised. This way, no additional magnetic-to-electrical conversion is required. More importantly, the information carriers can spontaneously travel up to ~300 nm, for which no spin-polarised current is required. The derived logic scheme enables topological spintronics, which can be integrated into large-scale memory and logic networks capable of complex computations.
