A High-adhesion Binding Strategy for Silica Nanoparticle-based Superhydrophobic Coatings.

ABSTRACT: One of the long-standing problems for the nanoparticle-based liquid-repellent coatings is their poor adhesion to substrates. For polymers of low glass transition temperature, it is highly desirable to have low temperature coating strategy to fabricate robust superhydrophobic films. Here, we report a facile method for fabricating robust, transparent, superhydrophobic films on polymer substrates. A mixture of silica particles and silica-based oligomers was spin coated on polymer substrates, followed by oxygen plasma treatment and vapor deposition of 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FDTS). The resulting superhydrophobic surface has a static contact angle at 160° and contact angle hysteresis lower than 5°. This study provides a practical solution to improve the adhesion of superhydrophobic films on polymer substrates in ambient conditions.

Superhydrophobic Coatings Based on PMMA-Siloxane-Silica and Modified Silica Nanoparticles Deposited on AA2024-T3.

Project description:The study aimed to develop a superhydrophobic coating on the aluminium alloy 2024-T3 surface. The desired surface roughness and low surface energy were achieved with SiO2 nanoparticles, synthesised via the Stöber method and modified with alkyl silane (AS) or perfluoroalkyl silane (FAS). To enhance particle adhesion to the alloy substrate, nanoparticles were incorporated into a hybrid sol-gel coating composed of tetraethyl orthosilicate, methyl methacrylate, and 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane. The coated substrates were characterised using field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy for surface topography, nanoparticle size distribution, composition, and coating thickness. The corrosion resistance of the coatings on AA2024-T3 was evaluated in a 0.1 M NaCl solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The synthesised SiO2 nanoparticles had an average size between 25 and 35 nm. The water contact angles on coated aluminium surfaces reached 135° for SiO2 + AS and 151° for SiO2 + FAS. SiO2 + FAS, indicating superhydrophobic properties, showed the most uniform surface with the most consistent size distribution of the SiO2 nanoparticles. Incorporation of nanoparticles into the hybrid sol-gel coating further improved particle adhesion. The ~2 µm-thick coating also demonstrated efficient barrier properties, significantly enhancing corrosion resistance for over two months under the test conditions.

Robust, transparent, superhydrophobic coatings using novel hydrophobic/hydrophilic dual-sized silica particles.

Project description:HypothesisThe superhydrophobic lotus leaf has dual-scale surface structures, that is, nano-bumps on micro-mountains. Large hydrophilic particles, due to its high surface energy and weight, have high affility to substrates and tend to precipitate at the bottom of coating films. Small hydrophobic particles, due to its low surface energy and weight, tends to sit on the top of coating films and form porous structures. To mimic the lotus leaf surface, it may be possible to develop dual-sized particle films, in which small particles are decorated on large particles.ExperimentsA one-step spin coating of a mixture of dual-sized silica particles (55/200 nm) was used. Epoxy resin was added to improve the adhesion of particle films. The single-sized and dual-sized particle films were compared. The mechanical robustness of particle films was tested by tape peeling and droplet impact.FindingsThe novel combination of hydrophobic silica (55 nm) and hydrophilic silica (200 nm) is essential in creating the hierarchical structures. By combining the strong adhesion of hydrophilic silica (bottom of coating film) to polymer substrates and porous structures of hydrophobic silica (top of coating film), we first time report a one-step and versatile approach to create uniform, transparent, robust, and superhydrophobic surface.

Formation of Superhydrophobic Coatings Based on Dispersion Compositions of Hexyl Methacrylate Copolymers with Glycidyl Methacrylate and Silica Nanoparticles.

Project description:In the last decade, the task of developing environmentally friendly and cost-effective methods for obtaining stable superhydrophobic coatings has become topical. In this study, we examined the effect of the concentrations of filler and polymer binder on the hydrophobic properties and surface roughness of composite coatings made from organic-aqueous compositions based on hexyl methacrylate (HMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymers. Silicon dioxide nanoparticles were used as a filler. A single-stage "all-in-one" aerosol application method was used to form the coatings without additional intermediate steps for attaching the adhesive layer or texturing the substrate surface, as well as pre-modification of the surface of filler nanoparticles. As the ratio of the mass fraction of polymer binder (Wn) to filler (Wp) increases, the coatings show the lowest roll-off angles among the whole range of samples studied. Coatings with an optimal mass fraction ratio (Wn/Wp = 1.2 ÷ 1.6) of the filler to polymer binder maintained superhydrophobic properties for 24 h in contact with a drop of water in a chamber saturated with water vapor and exhibited roll-off angles of 6.1° ± 1°.

Transparent superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic nanoparticle textured coatings: comparative study of anti-soiling performance.

Project description:The anti-soiling (AS) performance of highly reflective, superhydrophilic (SPH, 0° water contact angle) coated mirrors was characterized and compared with that of superhydrophobic (SP, >165° water contact angle) coated mirrors. A simple one-step nanotextured silica nanoparticle coating on a mirror exhibited SPH properties associated with hydrophilic rough surfaces. Another mirror surface post-functionalized with low-surface-energy ligand molecules displayed SP behavior. Both coated mirrors, with no solar reflectance loss, demonstrated excellent AS performance because the engineered surface roughness reduced the adhesive force of dust particles. The daily degradation in solar reflectance induced by dust accumulation under outdoor field testing demonstrated that the SPH- and SP-coated mirrors, compared with an uncoated mirror, maintained higher solar reflectance, which was associated with the designed self-cleaning behavior and natural cleaning. However, over the long term, dust-moisture cementation-evidenced by organic hard water stains on the mirror-initiated unrecoverable reflectance loss on the SP-coated mirror after 3 months, whereas the SPH-coated mirror maintained higher reflectance for 7.5 months. Considering fabrication costs and maintenance, SPH-coated nanotextured mirrors offer potential benefits for application in solar energy harvesting.

Ultra-durable superhydrophobic cellular coatings.

Project description:Developing versatile, scalable, and durable coatings that resist the accretion of matters (liquid, vapor, and solid phases) in various operating environments is important to industrial applications, yet has proven challenging. Here, we report a cellular coating that imparts liquid-repellence, vapor-imperviousness, and solid-shedding capabilities without the need for complicated structures and fabrication processes. The key lies in designing basic cells consisting of rigid microshells and releasable nanoseeds, which together serve as a rigid shield and a bridge that chemically bonds with matrix and substrate. The durability and strong resistance to accretion of different matters of our cellular coating are evidenced by strong anti-abrasion, enhanced anti-corrosion against saltwater over 1000 h, and maintaining dry in complicated phase change conditions. The cells can be impregnated into diverse matrixes for facile mass production through scalable spraying. Our strategy provides a generic design blueprint for engineering ultra-durable coatings for a wide range of applications.

Tree root-inspired robust superhydrophobic coatings with high permeation for porous structures.

Project description:Superhydrophobic coatings have tremendous potential for protecting porous structures from corrosion. However, the weak adhesion and poor abrasion resistance have long been challenges for their real-life applications. Inspired by tree roots, we prepared a robust superhydrophobic coating by spraying fluorinated nanodiamonds (FNDs) on a permeable epoxy coating. The epoxy can not only coat the surface but also permeate deeply inside a porous substrate and consolidate in situ as tree roots in soil. Thus, the structure is thoroughly reinforced where the pull-off strength reaches 9.4 MPa for concrete. On the other hand, the surface is covered with immobilized FNDs, forming a superhydrophobic surface. Thanks to the ultra-hard FNDs, the coating surface has high abrasion resistance and its superhydrophobicity holds even after 100 abrasion cycles. Moreover, it exhibits self-cleaning, anti-icing, and anticorrosion performance. It is promising in protecting various porous structures such as concrete, wood, and untreated corroded steel.

Force-Based Wetting Characterization of Stochastic Superhydrophobic Coatings at Nanonewton Sensitivity.

Project description:Superhydrophobic coatings have extraordinary properties like self-cleaning and staying dry, and have recently appeared on industrial and consumer markets. The stochastic nature of the coating components and coating processes (e.g., spraying, painting) affects the uniformity of the water repellency across the coated substrate. The wetting properties of those coatings are typically quantified on macroscale using contact angle goniometry (CAG). Here, highly sensitive force-based methods, scanning droplet adhesion microscopy (SDAM), and micropipette force sensor (MFS), are used, to quantify the microscale heterogeneity in the wetting properties of stochastic superhydrophobic coatings with irregular surface topography that cannot be investigated by CAG. By mapping the wetting adhesion forces with SDAM and friction forces with MFS, it is demonstrated that even the best coatings on the market are prone to heterogeneities that induce stick-slip motion of droplets. Thus, owing to their high spatial and force resolution, the advantages of these techniques over CAG are demonstrated.

Superhydrophobic coatings on gelatin-based films: fabrication, characterization and cytotoxicity studies.

Project description:As a degradable natural biomaterial, gelatin has good biocompatibility and nontoxicity, but gelatin is easily soluble in water which has limited its application. In order to solve this tough defect, superhydrophobic gelatin films (GSF) were prepared by first grafting silica nanoparticles onto gelatin films and then modifying silica nanoparticles with a fluorosilane coupling agent (FAS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a particle size analyzer, a contact angle instrument (CA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a universal materials tester and an Incucyte™ Zoom system were used to characterize the morphology, molecular interactions, superhydrophobic performance, and cytotoxicity. Results show that GSF300 modified by silica nanoparticles with a particle size of 303 nm has the largest contact angle (158.6°). At the same time, the contact angle is still more than 150° after 48 hours of infiltration in water. These results indicate that GSF300 has strong long-term water resistance. In addition, GSF300 has good mechanical strength, durability and nontoxicity. Therefore, such a durable, robust and superhydrophobic film has good potential applications in various functional biomedical aspects.

Plasma-enabled superhydrophobic coatings on mild steel.

Project description:This work demonstrates a new pathway to the direct on-surface fabrication of a superhydrophobic surface coating on mild steel. The coating was formed using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to convert a liquid small-molecule precursor (1,2,4-tricholorobenzene) to a solid film via plasma-assisted on-surface polymerization. Plasma treatments were performed under a nitrogen atmosphere with a variety of power levels and durations. Samples were analysed by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), Raman spectroscopy, optical profilometry, contact angle measurement, and potentiodynamic polarisation tests. Wettability of the films varied with the plasma parameters, and through the inclusion of graphene nanoplatelets in the precursor. High-dose plasma exposures of the nanoplatelet-containing precursor created superhydrophobic films with water contact angles above 150°. Potentiodynamic polarisation tests revealed that the superhydrophobic coating provided little or no corrosion protection.

Zirconia based superhydrophobic coatings on cotton fabrics exhibiting excellent durability for versatile use.

Project description:A fluorinated silyl functionalized zirconia was synthesized by the sol-gel method to fabricate an extremely durable superhydrophobic coating on cotton fabrics by simple immersion technique. The fabric surfaces firmly attached with the coating material through covalent bonding, possessed superhydrophobicity with high water contact angle ≈163 ± 1°, low hysteresis ≈3.5° and superoleophilicity. The coated fabrics were effective to separate oil/water mixture with a considerably high separation efficiency of 98.8 wt% through ordinary filtering. Presence of highly stable (chemically and mechanically) superhydrophobic zirconia bonded with cellulose makes such excellent water repelling ability of the fabrics durable under harsh environment conditions like high temperature, strong acidic or alkaline solutions, different organic solvents and mechanical forces including extensive washings. Moreover, these coated fabrics retained self-cleanable superhydrophobic property as well as high water separation efficiency even after several cycles, launderings and abrasions. Therefore, such robust superhydrophobic ZrO2 coated fabrics have strong potential for various industrial productions and uses.
