Dataset of two decades of Tiger Woods press conferences and tournament performance.

ABSTRACT: This data article describes a dataset that allows exploring the determinants of superstars' sentiment in tournaments. It consists of 1,284 press conferences of Tiger Woods in the PGA Tour between 1996 and 2020. We used natural language processing, a form of artificial intelligence, to extract and encode in a quantitative form the sentiment in Tiger Woods press conferences both before the tournament and after the rounds played. Additionally, the dataset provides a series of variables that describe Tiger Woods' scoring and performance momentum in each round and variables that describe health-related and off-the-course issues that could affect his performance on the course. This data can be useful to understand the sentiment that superstars go through before important tournaments, their sentiment following a major victory or defeat, how that sentiment evolves throughout their athletic career, and how sentiment is associated with performance momentum.

Project description:The dataset gathers all press conferences in text form made by the first three Presidents of the European Central Bank since its inception in 1998. Press conferences are composed of two elements: (1) introductory statements and (2) questions and answers (Q&A) from journalists. They serve as the main communication vehicle about the monetary policy decision of the ECB׳s Governing Council. From 1998 to 2016, a total of 205 press conferences have been delivered. The dataset is structured into two main sections: (1) 205 introductory statement of the Presidents of the ECB explaining the monetary policy of the Institution and (2) 205 answers provided by the Presidents to the journalists, hence a total of 410 statements (914,499 words or 3050 pages) about the monetary policy and its context, in text form.

Speech acts in the Dutch COVID-19 Press Conferences.

Project description:An open source corpus of all Dutch COVID-19 Press Conferences with sentences annotated on the basis of John Searle's Speech Act taxonomy was created. It contains all 58 press conferences held between March 6 2020 and April 20 2021 and has 9.441 manually annotated sentences. Speech acts were annotated in a consistent manner, with a Krippendorff's alpha of .71. The corpus is easy to use and rich in metadata, with lexical, syntactic, discourse (speaker, question or answer) features and information on the type of regulations being present. We analyse the press conferences in terms of speech act usage, giving insight into the use of speech acts over time, the relation of speech act usage to real world phenomena, the general structure of the press conferences and the division of roles between speakers. Relations were found between speech act usage and the type of press conference (i.e. easing, tightening or neutral) as well as the number of hospital admissions. Speech act classes showed preferred locations within the press conferences, indicating a general structure. Distinct roles between speakers were identified. We also investigate the use of our set of labelled sentences for training a speech act classifier and achieve a reasonable accuracy of .73 and a mean reciprocal rank of .74 with the state of the art transformer RoBERTa model.Supplementary informationThe online version of this article contains supplementary material available 10.1007/s10579-022-09602-7.

The tiger mosquito in Lebanon two decades after its introduction: A growing health concern.

Project description:The tiger mosquito was introduced to the Eastern region of the Mediterranean basin more than twenty years ago. In Lebanon, it was first observed in 2002 in a limited number of locations mainly from the coastal area of the country. In the absence of national entomological control program, this invasive mosquito became an established species and is now considered in many localities, a source of nuisance because of its human biting behavior. Several entomological surveys were conducted to monitor the geographic spread and the seasonal dynamics of Aedes albopictus by collecting adult stages and by monitoring oviposition activity. Moreover, its susceptibility to the common groups of insecticides was assessed using WHO standard bioassays. Previous vector competence studies revealed that local strains were able to transmit Chikungunya and Dengue viruses. Due to the increased risk of Zika virus introduction in the country, we determined the competence of local populations to transmit this virus. Mapping results showed that Ae. albopictus is mainly spread in the relatively humid western versant of the Mount Lebanon chain reaching 1000m altitude, while it is absent from arid and semi-arid inland areas. Besides, this mosquito is active during 32 weeks from spring till the end of autumn. Local strains of the tiger mosquito are susceptible to pyrethroids and carbamates but resistant to organophosphates and organochlorines. They showed ability to transmit Zika virus; however, only 9% of females were capable to excrete the virus in their saliva at day 28 post infection. Current and previous observations highlight the need to establish a surveillance system in order to control this mosquito and monitor the potential introduction of related diseases.

Crisis communication in the WHO COVID-19 press conferences: A retrospective analysis.

Project description:ObjectivesThe objective of this study is to investigate, from a longitudinal perspective, how WHO communicated COVID-19 related information to the public through its press conferences during the first two years of the pandemic.MethodsThe transcripts of 195 WHO COVID-19 press conferences held between January 22, 2020 and February 23, 2022 were collected. All transcripts were syntactically parsed to extract highly frequent noun chunks that were potential topics of the press conferences. First-order autoregression models were fit to identify "hot" and "cold" topics. In addition, sentiments and emotions expressed in the transcripts were analyzed using lexicon-based sentiment/emotion analyses. Mann-Kendall tests were performed to capture the possible trends of sentiments and emotions over time.ResultsFirst, eleven "hot" topics were identified. These topics were pertinent to anti-pandemic measures, disease surveillance and development, and vaccine-related issues. Second, no significant trend was captured in sentiments. Last, significant downward trends were found in anticipation, surprise, anger, disgust, and fear. However, no significant trends were found in joy, trust, and sadness.ConclusionsThis retrospective study provided new empirical evidence on how WHO communicated issues pertaining to COVID-19 to the general public through its press conferences. With the help of the study, members of the general public, health organizations, and other stake-holders will be able to better understand the way in which WHO has responded to various critical events during the first two years of the pandemic.

Media Agenda and Press Conferences on COVID-19 in Mexico: An Analysis of Journalists' Questions.

Project description:The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to strengthen health communication in times of crisis. This study aims to analyze the media agenda of press conferences on COVID-19 in Mexico during the first two phases of the pandemic, based on journalists' questions. The study is based on framing theory. The method used was content analysis from a quantitative perspective. This method was explicitly applied to the final section of the conferences, which dealt with "questions from the press." The results show that at the beginning of the pandemic, the press was more interested in the government's management of the health crisis than in issues such as the prevention of the disease itself or the economic impact of the crisis on the country. Moreover, the main characteristic of the questions was that they were generally socially relevant. In conclusion, we found that in the media agenda of the Mexican conference, the frame of attribution of responsibility was prominent but in combination with the frames of conflict, human interest, morality, and economic consequences.

"Do your part: Stay apart": Collective intentionality and collective (in)action in US governor's COVID-19 press conferences.

Project description:This mixed-methods study examines how political leaders mobilize collective intentionality during the COVID-19 pandemic in nine US States, and how collective intentionality differs across republican and democratic administrations. The results of our computational and qualitative analyses show that i) political leaders establish collective intentionality by emphasizing unity, vulnerability, action, and community boundaries; ii) political leaders' call to collective action clashes with the inaction required by health guidelines; iii) social inequalities received little attention across all states compared to other themes; and iv) collective intentionality in democratic administrations is linked to individuals' agency and actions, suggesting a bottom-up approach. Conversely, in republican administrations individuals' contributions are downplayed compared to work and state-level action, indicating a top-down approach. This study demonstrates the theoretical and empirical value of collective intentionality in sociological research, and contributes to a better understanding of leadership and prosociality in times of crisis.

Project description:This article presents the frequency of distribution of editorial members of Dove Medical press, across the world based on their official stated affiliations. Uneven distributions across the six continents were observed and this was confirmed by the Chi-square test of goodness of fit. Further research can focus on data on the gender composition, distribution of the affiliations of the first or corresponding authors of the respective journals, citation and editorial board composition based on the abstraction and indexation of the journals.

Bioinspired polymeric woods.

Project description:Woods provide bioinspiration for engineering materials due to their superior mechanical performance. We demonstrate a novel strategy for large-scale fabrication of a family of bioinspired polymeric woods with similar polyphenol matrix materials, wood-like cellular microstructures, and outstanding comprehensive performance by a self-assembly and thermocuring process of traditional resins. In contrast to natural woods, polymeric woods demonstrate comparable mechanical properties (a compressive yield strength of up to 45 MPa), preferable corrosion resistance to acid with no decrease in mechanical properties, and much better thermal insulation (as low as ~21 mW m-1 K-1) and fire retardancy. These bioinspired polymeric woods even stand out from other engineering materials such as cellular ceramic materials and aerogel-like materials in terms of specific strength and thermal insulation properties. The present strategy provides a new possibility for mass production of a series of high-performance biomimetic engineering materials with hierarchical cellular microstructures and remarkable multifunctionality.

Project description:The Mundellian Trilemma has maintained its reputation of a sensible guiding framework regarding policy trade-offs among monetary independence, degree of exchange rate flexibility, and financial openness. This data article offers a unique access to explore the determinants and implications of different Trilemma configurations across 195 countries and over 58 years by providing macroeconomic, financial and policy choice data for 103 variables. The dataset has the potential to contribute to the investigation of the consequences of different Trilemma configurations by income group, size, and geographical position of the economies; to enrich international macroeconomics literature on the role of country idiosyncrasies in navigating through the Mundellian Trilemma, and to formulate policy-relevant conclusions.
