Students' perception of educational environment based on Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure and the role of peer mentoring: a cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

The curricular reform at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Iran, has been implemented since 2011 when peer mentoring program started. The program is believed to have a crucial role in students' perception of the educational environment (EE). We aimed to determine how students perceive the educational environment and compared the mentees and non-mentees' perception of EE.

Methods

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 190 first-year medical students enrolling at Tehran University of Medical Sciences from March to September 2019. A questionnaire was used to collect information on students' age, gender, marital status, dormitory status, and their mentoring status including satisfaction of mentor-mentee relationship. The study also employed Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM). The collected data were then entered and analysed using SPSS version 20. To compare the perception of EE between mentees and non-mentees, we used independent t-test.

Results

The mean (SD) for total DREEM score for EE was 144.1 (19.3), which signifies a more positive than negative educational environment perception. Nonetheless, the mean scores of total DREEM was not significantly different between students with or without mentors (P =0.390). The overall mean score for student perceptions of learning for mentees was 32.47 (4.5) while for those without a mentor, the score was 31.70 (4.9) (P =0.491). The items concerned with "emphasizing factual learning" and "teacher-based teaching" were rated the least. The item "having an appropriate support system" was scored significantly different between students with or without mentors (P =0.009).

Conclusions

Since having an appropriate support system was significantly different between groups, we suggest curriculum designers focus on the above-mentioned issue under caption for improvement during the reform programs.

Project description:PurposeThe objective of this study was to assess student perceptions of the environment in this medical college using the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM).MethodsCross-sectional study; 348 medical student volunteers (68.1%) of all semesters participated (511 enrolled). DREEM has 50 items, each rated from 0-4 (Likert scale: 0, strongly disagree to 4, strongly agree), that measure five domains: students' perceptions of learning; perceptions of teachers; academic self-perception; perceptions of the atmosphere; and social self-perception. Mean item scores, domain scores, and global scores were computed.ResultsThe three highest rated items were knowledgeable teachers, having good friends, and confidence about passing; the three most problematic items were a poor support system for stressed students, inability to memorize everything, and over-emphasis on factual learning. The percentage score for perception of learning (47.26± 14.85) was significantly lower than that for teachers (52.28± 9.91; P< 0.001); academic self-perception (52.14 ± 15.21; P < 0.001); perception of the atmosphere (51.21 ± 13.60; P = 0.001); and social self-perception (50.63± 13.90; P= 0.010). Students, particularly of the eighth semester, perceived the teaching negatively. The lowest scores were given to the support system, burdensome course content, and factual learning; thus, a hybrid curriculum that includes problem-based learning might provide students with stimulating learning; structured clinical teaching with specific curricular objectives, as well as mentoring of senior students by faculty and near-peers, might improve the learning environment for senior students.

Project description:BackgroundEducational settings in professional health education establishments significantly shape students' academic, social, and emotional experiences. These environments encompass physical, psychological, and social infrastructures of programs or institutions, which jointly influence learning and development. This study analyzed the educational environment at Prince Nora University in Saudi Arabia, a renowned institution in health education.AimThe primary aim of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of the educational environment among students at Prince Nora University using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) inventory. The DREEM inventory is a renowned and validated tool designed to gauge students' perceptions across various dimensions of their educational experience.MethodsEmploying a cross-sectional survey design, the research gathered data from a sample of 321 students enrolled in the College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Prince Nord University. The DREEM inventory, which measures the academic, social, and emotional aspects of the learning environment from the student's perspective, was utilized to collect the information.ResultsThe findings from the study indicated a positive perception of the educational environment among the students, with an overall mean score of 113.84 out of 200 on the DREEM inventory. Analysis of the subscales revealed that the Student Perceptions of Atmosphere (SPoA) received the highest scores, indicating a favourable environment, while Student Social Self-Perceptions (SSSP) scored the lowest, suggesting areas that may require attention and improvement.ConclusionThe study successfully showed the utility of the DREEM inventory in assessing the educational environment at Prince Nora University, highlighting its effectiveness as a tool for understanding student perceptions. Project description:BackgroundLearning environment (LE) research has been given priority in higher education institutions globally because of its influence on learning processes and outcomes. Although studies reporting the perceptions of health science students about LE in Nigeria are available, none have compared the perceptions of students from different health professions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess final-year clinical students' perceptions of their LE from four programs (dentistry, medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy) and compared their LE perceptions.MethodsThis study adopted a cross-sectional study design using a mixed method approach. The quantitative survey involved all the final-year clinical students at the University of Ibadan, and they completed the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire. The qualitative aspect involved 24 consenting students in four focus group discussions.ResultsA total of 214 out of 223 copies of the DREEM questionnaire were duly completed and returned, yielding 96.0% response rate. The participants' mean age was 24 ± 2.3 years (ranged between 22 and 25 years, p = 0.001). The mean DREEM scores of the students from the four programs ranged between 119.68 ± 18.02 and 147.65 ± 15.89 out of a maximum of 200, interpreted as more positive than negative perceptions of LE. Physiotherapy students' DREEM score was significantly higher than those of medical, dental, and nursing students (p < 0.001). The DREEM scores of other students did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). Dental and medical students had similar positive perceptions. The qualitative aspect revealed that the students had positive perceptions of their teachers' knowledge base and self-acquisition of knowledge but negative perceptions of their teachers' communication skills, infrastructural facilities, lecturer-student relationships, and hostel accommodations.ConclusionAlthough the survey indicated that these clinical students had more positive than negative perceptions of their learning environment, the qualitative aspect of the study revealed many challenges that the students were confronted with. The clinical students' perception of their learning environment could be improved if the university authorities would address these challenges.
