Project description:Aluminum powders are known to provide outstanding volumetric exothermic enthalpy energy during thermal oxidation. However, the amount of energy released tends to be limited by the dense surface oxide (Al2O3) layer of the powder. Hence, a prerequisite for improving the reactivity of passivated Al particles is to remove the Al2O3 film from the surface. Considering that the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction of Ni and Al can generate additional exothermic heat in Al powder, Ni can be considered as a promising alternative to the surface oxide layer. Here, we report oxide-layer-free fine Al particles with a characteristic Ni/Al interface, where a Ni layer replaces the Al2O3 film. The microstructure of the synthesized powder consists of a 200-nm-thick Ni layer homogeneously coated on the Al surface, which has nanosized craters caused by the geometrical removal of Al2O3. Thermal analysis and in-situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results clearly show that active interdiffusion of atoms through the Ni/Al interface results in the formation of intermetallic compounds to provide additional exothermic energy, compared to the result for simply mixing Ni and Al powders. Hence, these findings provide new routes for the design and application of reactive metallic particles using the SHS reaction.

Project description:We have investigated the formation of stable clusters of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) chains in water at temperatures above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), induced by the presence of sodium tetraphenylborate, NaPh4B. The hydrophobic Ph4B- ions interact strongly with the pNIPAM chains, providing them with a net effective negative charge, which leads to the stabilization of pNIPAM clusters for temperatures above the LCST, with a mean cluster size that depends non-monotonically on salt concentration. Combining experiments with physical modeling at the mesoscopic level and atomistic molecular dynamic simulations, we show that this effect is caused by the interplay between the hydrophobic attraction between pNIPAM chains and the electrostatic repulsion induced by the associated Ph4B- ions. These results provide insight on the significance of weak associative anion-polymer interaction driven by hydrophobic interaction and how this anionic binding can prevent macroscopic phase separation. Harvesting the competition between attractive hydrophobic and repulsive electrostatic interaction opens avenues for the dynamic control of the formation of well-calibrated polymer microparticles.

Project description:We demonstrate that a vibration-induced air inflow can cause vigorous bubbling in a bed of fine particles and report the mechanism by which this phenomenon occurs. When convective flow occurs in a powder bed as a result of vibrations, the upper powder layer with a high void ratio moves downward and is compressed. This process forces the air in the powder layer out, which leads to the formation of bubbles that rise and eventually burst at the top surface of the powder bed. A negative pressure is created below the rising bubbles. A narrow opening at the bottom allows the outside air to flow into the powder bed, which produces a vigorously bubbling fluidized bed that does not require the use of an external air supply system.

Project description:Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a recognized risk factor for the global burden of disease in human populations. We are presenting here the application of toxicogenomics in the evaluation of the toxic effects of organic content of atmospheric particle matter (PM), from urban and rural environments (city of Barcelona and village of La Pobla, NE Spain), using the developing zebrafish embryo. The main goal is to identify the metabolic pathways involved in the adverse effects observed in zebrafish embryos exposed to PM organic content from urban and rural environments, also allowing the selection of genes of interest that are differentially expressed. The relevance of particle size to the PM toxicity is also addressed. Indeed, the zebrafish embryos were exposed to PM of aerodynamic diameter larger than 7.2 μm and smaller than 0.5 μm (PM10 and PM0.5, respectively). PM0.5 concentrated biological and toxic activities linked to organic substances. Transcriptomic analyses showed strong induction of the AhR signalling pathway (a.k.a. dioxin-like activity) for embryos exposed to both rural and urban extracts, correlating with the concentrations of PAHs. Urban extracts, with strong contribution of traffic emissions, specifically de-regulated oxidative stress-related genes, as well as pancreatic and eye-lens specific genes, two organs known to be affected by air pollution in humans. Exposure to rural extracts, with high contribution of wood burning emissions, affected genes implicated in basic cellular functions, in agreement with their strong embryotoxicity. Extracts from rural and urban samples elicited both common and specific transcriptome responses, suggesting different potentially adverse outcomes depending on PM source and composition. Project description:IntroductionExercising on regular basis provides countless health benefits. To ensure the health, well-being and performance of athletes, optimal indoor air quality, regular maintenance and ventilation in sport facilities are essential.MethodsThis study assessed the levels of particulate, down to the ultrafine range (PM10, PM2.5, and particle number concentration in size range of 20-1,000 nm, i.e., - PNC20-1000 nm), gaseous pollutants (total volatile organic compounds - TVOCs, CO2, and O3) and comfort parameters (temperature - T, relative humidity - RH) in different functional spaces of health clubs (n = 8), under specific occupancy and ventilation restrictions.Results and discussionIn all HCs human occupancy resulted in elevated particles (up to 2-3 times than those previously reported), considering mass concentrations (PM10: 1.9-988.5 μg/m3 PM2.5: 1.6-479.3 μg/m3) and number (PNC 1.23 × 103 - 9.14 × 104 #/cm3). Coarse and fine PM indicated a common origin (rs = 0.888-0.909), while PNC showed low-moderate associations with particle mass (rs = 0.264-0.629). In addition, up to twice-higher PM and PNC were detected in cardiofitness & bodybuilding (C&B) areas as these spaces were the most frequented, reinforcing the impacts of occupational activities. In all HCs, TVOCs (0.01-39.67 mg/m3) highly exceeded the existent protection thresholds (1.6-8.9 times) due to the frequent use of cleaning products and disinfectants (2-28 times higher than in previous works). On contrary to PM and PNC, TVOCs were higher (1.1-4.2 times) in studios than in C&B areas, due to the limited ventilations combined with the smaller room areas/volumes. The occupancy restrictions also led to reduced CO2 (122-6,914 mg/m3) than previously observed, with the lowest values in HCs with natural airing. Finally, the specific recommendations for RH and T in sport facilities were largely unmet thus emphasizing the need of proper ventilation procedures in these spaces.

Project description:Diffusiophoresis, the movement of particles under a solute concentration gradient, has practical implications in a number of applications, such as particle sorting, focusing, and sensing. For diffusiophoresis in an electrolyte solution, the particle velocity is described by the electrolyte relative concentration gradient and the diffusiophoretic mobility of the particle. The electrolyte concentration, which typically varies throughout the system in space and time, can also influence the zeta potential of particles in space and time. This variation affects the diffusiophoretic behavior, especially when the zeta potential is highly dependent on the electrolyte concentration. In this work, we show that adsorbing a single bilayer (or 4 bilayers) of a polyelectrolyte pair (PDADMAC/PSS) on the surface of microparticles resulted in effectively constant zeta potential values with respect to salt concentration throughout the experimental range of salt concentrations. This allowed a constant potential model for diffusiophoretic transport to describe the experimental observations, which was not the case for uncoated particles in the same electrolyte system. This work highlights the use of simple polyelectrolyte pairs to tune the zeta potential and maintain constant values for precise control of diffusiophoretic transport.

Project description:A series of silica-coated micrometer-sized poly(methyl methacrylate) latex particles are prepared using a Stöber silica deposition protocol that employs tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a soluble silica precursor. Given the relatively low specific surface area of the latex particles, silica deposition is best conducted at relatively high solids to ensure a sufficiently high surface area. Such conditions aid process intensification. Importantly, physical adsorption of chitosan onto the latex particles prior to silica deposition minimizes secondary nucleation and promotes the formation of silica shells: in the absence of chitosan, well-defined silica overlayers cannot be obtained. Thermogravimetry studies indicate that silica formation is complete within a few hours at 20 °C regardless of the presence or absence of chitosan. Kinetic data obtained using this technique suggest that the adsorbed chitosan chains promote surface deposition of silica onto the latex particles but do not catalyze its formation. Systematic variation of the TEOS/latex mass ratio enables the mean silica shell thickness to be tuned from 45 to 144 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies of silica-coated latex particles after calcination at 400 °C confirm the presence of hollow silica particles, which indicates the formation of relatively smooth (albeit brittle) silica shells under optimized conditions. Aqueous electrophoresis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies are also consistent with latex particles coated in a uniform silica overlayer. The silica deposition formulation reported herein is expected to be a useful generic strategy for the efficient coating of micrometer-sized particles at relatively high solids.

The PM filter samples used in the present study were PM10 and PM0.5 from the urban site - total of 4 samples from 2 sampling months; and PM0.5 from the rural site - total of 2 samples from 2 sampling months (PM10 samples from the rural site were not tested due to their very low concentration in organic compounds, and insignificant biological activity, previously measured). Sampling occurred during the cold periods of the year 2012/2013. The organic fraction of PM samples was extracted by sonication using a mixture of dichloromethane:methanol. Then, the extracts were filtered, evaporated and re-dissolved in Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Zebrafish fertilized eggs were exposed to PM organic extracts (0.2% DMSO) from the urban and rural sites from 24 to 120h post-fertilization. Total RNA was isolated from whole embryos (pools of 20 individuals), using Trizol reagent protocol (Invitrogen Life Technologies, Carlsberg, CA). The microarray study was performed using the Agilent Two-colour D. rerio Oligo Microarray v3 platform, following the Agilent Microarray â?? Based Gene Expression Analysis protocol. Three biological replicates were performed for each PM sample and controls. Biological replicates, a technical replicate and a self-to-self, were simultaneously amplified and labelled using Cyanine 3 (Cy3) and Cyanine 5 (Cy5) dye. After cRNA purification (RNeasy Kit, Quiagen GmbH, Hilden, Germany), the cRNA concentration and labelling were quantified in the NanoDrop spectrophotometer, obtaining incorporation rates in the range of 15-20pmol of cyanide dye/µl cRNA and yield values > 0.825ug, as recommended. cRNA was fragmented and hybridized in 4x44K arrays, for 17h at 65oC. After the hybridization the array slides were washed, and immediately scanned using Microarray Scanner Agilent G2505C system. Data was extracted using Agilent Feature Extraction Software v10.5.1.1, and the quality of microarray data was evaluated using the Quality Control report provided by Agilent Software. Based on the microarray data analysis, 22 primers were selected and designed using Primer Express 2.0 software (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA). Genes were quantified by real-time PCR to validate the microarray data, and a subset of 13 genes were further selected by their robust behaviour in the validation assays, allowing to differentiate the toxic potential of PM from urban and rural sources.

Project description:Microplastic ingestion has been shown for various organisms, but knowledge of the potential adverse effects on freshwater invertebrates remains limited. We assessed the ingestion capacity and the associated effects of polyester fibers (26-5761 µm) and car tire particles (25-75 µm) on freshwater invertebrates under acute and chronic exposure conditions. A range of microplastic concentrations was tested on Daphnia magna, Hyalella azteca, Asellus aquaticus, and Lumbriculus variegatus using water only (up to 0.15 g/L) or spiked sediment (up to 2 g/kg dry wt), depending on the habitat of the species. Daphnia magna did not ingest any fibers, but low levels of fibers were ingested by all tested benthic invertebrate species. Car tire particle ingestion rose with increasing exposure concentration for all tested invertebrates and was highest in D. magna and L. variegatus. In most cases, no statistically significant effects on mobility, survival, or reproductive output were observed after acute and chronic exposure at the tested concentrations. However, fibers affected the reproduction and survival of D. magna (no-observed-effect concentration [NOEC]: 0.15 mg/L) due to entanglement and limited mobility under chronic conditions. Car tire particles affected the reproduction (NOEC: 1.5 mg/L) and survival (NOEC: 0.15 mg/L) of D. magna after chronic exposure at concentrations in the same order of magnitude as modeled river water concentrations, suggesting that refined exposure and effect studies should be performed with these microplastics. Our results confirm that microplastic ingestion by freshwater invertebrates depends on particle shape and size and that ingestion quantity depends on the exposure pathway and the feeding strategy of the test organism.
