Project description:Victimization by peers and siblings is associated with poorer mental health outcomes in adolescence. What is less clear is whether mental health outcomes improve if victimization experiences cease (e.g., being victimized in primary school but not secondary school). This study aims to explore how changes in victimization experiences are associated with changes in mental health outcomes in early adolescence. Data are from 13,912 participants in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), a nationally representative cohort of individuals born in the UK. Self-reported victimization by peers and siblings, as well as mental health outcomes (depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and body image), were collected at age 11 and age 14. Victimization at either time point was associated with poorer mental health across the range of outcomes, with effects largest for those who were consistently victimized. Those who reported increasing victimization had greater deterioration in their mental health compared with their peers who were never victimized. Conversely, children whose victimization decreased showed similar mental health development over this period as those who were never victimized. There was a cumulative effect of victimization by peers and siblings, with effect sizes generally larger for experiences with peers. Victimization in adolescence is associated with enduring reductions in mental health. Nonetheless, the promising outcomes associated with reductions in victimization suggest the potential for bullying interventions in schools to limit the deterioration in mental health in victimized groups.

Project description:Youth sport offers physical and psychosocial components that may be beneficial for adolescents' mental health, but the prospective directionality between sport participation and mental health has not been clearly established. The current study examined longitudinal associations between sport participation (individual and team sport) and mental health indices (depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, emotional symptoms, hyperactivity symptoms, conduct problems, peer problems, and prosocial behavior) across adolescence (ages 12-17) in a nationally representative Australian sample of 3956 participants at T1 (Mage = 12.41 years, SD = 0.49; 49% female), 3537 at T2 (Mage = 14.41 years, SD = 0.49; 49% female), and 3089 at T3 (Mage = 16.46 years, SD = 0.51; 49% female). Using random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling, several significant within-person effects were found. Notably, greater participation in team sport prospectively predicted fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety at subsequent timepoints. This study increases the understanding of how sport participation may relate to mental health among adolescents and provides critical evidence to inform policy.

Project description:Childhood obesity has been associated with lower cognitive performance and worse mental health in cross-sectional studies. However, it is unclear whether these findings extend longitudinally and in what causal direction. Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (maximum analytical n = 6671, 48.3% girls, 42.8% non-White), we examined how body mass index (BMI) at baseline (ages 9-11) relate prospectively to changes in cognition or psychopathology across the 2 years thereafter, and vice versa. Cognitive tests included the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Cognition Battery, Little Man Task of mental rotation, and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. Psychopathology was assessed using caregiver-reported Child Behavior Checklist. Linear mixed models adjusted for sociodemographic and developmental covariates indicated that lower baseline performance on most cognitive tests was associated with greater longitudinal BMI gain (eg, 1 point lower than median on Picture Vocabulary corresponded to 0.012 kg/m2 [1.6%; 95% CI, 0.008 to 0.016 kg/m2] more annual BMI gain, PFDR < .001), whereas baseline BMI was unrelated to longitudinal changes in cognition (PFDR ≥ .12; including after considering practice effects). Greater broad-spectrum psychopathology at baseline was associated with increased BMI gain (eg, each endorsement of externalizing problems than none corresponded to 0.015 kg/m2 [2.2%; 95% CI, 0.009 to 0.021 kg/m2] more annual BMI gain, PFDR < .001) and, reciprocally, greater baseline BMI was linked specifically to more longitudinal withdrawn/depressed and depression problems (0.010 [22%; 95% CI, 0.004 to 0.016] and 0.011 [15%; 95% CI, 0.004 to 0.017] more problems annually per 1 kg/m2 above median BMI, PFDR = .003 and .008). The associations did not differ in boys vs. girls (PFDR ≥ .40), and remained stable with waist circumference as the weight index and in subgroups of participants without weight-altering medications or common baseline psychiatric diagnoses. Our longitudinal findings expand previous cross-sectional works and highlight the importance of cognitive and mental health to children's weight development and links between weight and depression.

Project description:ImportanceBullying by peers has been associated with disordered eating behavior and symptoms of depression among adolescents as both an antecedent and an outcome. Identification of the temporal pattern of associations among bullying by peers, disordered eating behavior, and depression in adolescence is needed for the optimal targeting of intervention and prevention.ObjectiveTo assess the concurrent and longitudinal associations among bullying by peers, disordered eating behavior, and symptoms of depression using a cascade model that controlled for within-time and across-time (ie, stability paths) associations while examining cross-lag effects.Design, setting, and participantsIn this 5-year longitudinal cohort study, 612 participants of the McMaster Teen Study were included. This ongoing Canadian study examines the associations among bullying, mental health, and educational outcomes. Data collection began in 2008 when students were in grade 5 (10 years of age) and have since been collected annually. Data analysis was performed between August 20 and October 18, 2017.ExposuresBullying by peers was assessed in grades 7 to 11 using a composite measure of 5 items.Main outcomes and measuresDisordered eating behavior was assessed in grades 7 to 11 using the Short Screen for Eating Disorders, and depressive symptoms were assessed in grades 7 to 11 using the Behavior Assessment System for Children-Second Edition.ResultsThe 612 students included in the analytic sample had a mean age (SD) of 13.03 (0.38) years in grade 7; 331 (54.1%) were girls and 392 (71.1%) were white. Bullying by peers was concurrently associated with disordered eating behavior and depressive symptoms at every time point during the 5-year period (r range [SE], 0.15-0.48 [0.04-0.08]; P < .01). Disordered eating behavior was associated longitudinally with depressive symptoms at every time point (β range [SE], 0.14-0.19 [0.06-0.08]; P < .02) and bullying by peers at 2 time points (β range [SE], 0.12-0.22 [0.06-0.07]; P < .04) in girls and boys.Conclusions and relevanceBullying by peers was proximally associated with multiple psychopathologic symptoms, whereas symptoms of disordered eating behavior were a key risk factor for future depressive symptoms and bullying by peers. Interventions aimed at reducing problematic eating behavior in adolescents may attenuate the risk of future depressive symptoms and relational problems.

Project description:Bullying and sibling aggression can appear as similar behavior, though the latter is comparatively understudied. Aligned with the Theory of Intergenerational Transmission of Violence, research suggests that exposure to family violence increases an individual's risk for perpetrating violence in their own future relationships. Additionally, Problem Behavior Theory suggests that engaging in one problem behavior (e.g., bullying) increases the likelihood of engaging in other problem behavior (e.g., substance use). In Phase 1, this study of middle school students from the U.S. examined how exposure to family violence predicted membership in latent classes of bullying and sibling aggression perpetration (N = 894, sampled from four middle schools). In Phase 2, we used mixture modeling to understand how latent classes of family violence, sibling aggression, and bullying predict future substance use, mental health outcomes, and deviance behavior later in high school. Results yielded four profiles of peer and sibling aggression: high all, high sibling aggression, high peer aggression, and low all aggression. Youth who reported witnessing more family violence at home were significantly more likely to fall into the sibling aggression only and high all classes, compared to the low all class. Phase 2 results also yielded four classes: a high all class, a sibling aggression and family violence class, a peer aggression class, and a low all class. Individuals in the high all class were more likely to experience several unfavorable outcomes (substance use, depression, delinquency) compared to other classes. This study provides evidence for pathways from witnessing violence, to perpetrating aggression across multiple contexts, to developing other deleterious mental and behavioral health outcomes. These findings highlight the negative impact family violence can have on child development, providing support for a cross-contextual approach for programming aimed at developing relationships skills.

Project description:The present study examines a broad range of longitudinal predictors of dimensional positive mental health (PMH) and negative mental health (NMH), using data from the BOOM study. Participants were drawn from university student samples in Germany (1,608), Russia (677) and China (12,057). A structural equation model was conducted with four groups of predictors and PMH/NMH as criteria (outcomes). Five of the six salutogenic predictors were predictive of both positive mental health (positively) and negative mental health, as measured by depression (negatively). Pathogenic predictors anxiety and depression were related to future depression, but not to positive mental health. Stress at baseline was related to both future positive mental health (negatively) and future depression (positively). Being male in this study was associated with increased future depression. Results hold across Germany, Russia, and China. Results support the conceptualization of positive and negative mental health as related, but independent dimensions across three cultures.

Project description:IntroductionUnderstanding associations between psychosocial development in early childhood and formal diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in adolescence is critical for early identification and for tailoring interventions and support. This study investigated whether the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) scores in early childhood (4-5 years) predict mental health (MH) problems as evidenced by SDQ scores and formal diagnosis of NDDs in adolescence (16-17 years).MethodsThis study analysed data from a sample of 4968 children and adolescents using data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. We used hierarchical regression models to determine the association between SDQ subscales and total scores at ages 4-5 years (primary exposure) and total SDQ scores and NDD diagnoses at ages 16-17 years (outcomes) whilst controlling for sociodemographic risk factors.ResultsEach unit increase in SDQ score at age 4-5 led to a rise in SDQ scores at age 16-17. Autism and ADHD diagnoses, female gender, lower maternal education, and financial hardship were associated with higher SDQ scores at age 16-17. Furthermore, parent reported SDQ at age 4-5 was linked to higher likelihoods of formal diagnoses of ADHD, autism, and ADHD/autism at age 16-17. Additionally, social determinants of health such as female gender, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, and financial hardship were associated with increased odds of ADHD, autism, and ADHD/autism diagnoses at age 16-17.ConclusionOur findings highlight the opportunity for early identification of transdiagnostic developmental and MH issues in the preschool period. Findings also emphasise the critical role of social determinants of health in the longitudinal trajectory of MH and NDDs and highlight the need for implementing early supports for improving peer relations and behavioural support strategies. If coupled with wrap around social care, early support strategies can enhance MH and wellbeing in adolescence and beyond.

Project description:ImportanceHousehold food insecurity has been associated with mental health problems in children independently of family income and other confounders. It is unclear whether food insecurity during childhood is also associated with mental health and functioning during adolescence.ObjectiveTo evaluate longitudinal trajectories of household food insecurity during the first 13 years of life, characteristics associated with these trajectories, and the associations of the trajectories with externalizing, internalizing, substance use, and social adjustment problems at 15 years of age.Design, setting, and participantsThis cohort study included participants from the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, a cohort of 2120 children born in Québec, Canada, in 1997 and 1998 and followed up annually or biannually from 5 months to 15 years of age (1998-2013). Data were analyzed from November 2020 to October 2021.ExposuresWhen children were aged 1.5, 4, 8, 10, 12, and 13 years, mothers reported whether a family member experienced hunger because the family had run out of food or money to buy food in the past 12 months.Main outcomes and measuresGroup-based trajectory modeling was used to identify differential exposure to food insecurity from 1.5 to 13 years according to logit functions of age. At 15 years of age, adolescents completed validated questionnaires assessing externalizing, internalizing, substance use, and social adjustment problems. Associations between trajectories of food insecurity and outcomes were assessed using linear regressions.ResultsA total of 2032 individuals were included in the analyses of trajectories of food insecurity (1026 [50.5%] male) and 1441 in the analysis of the association with outcomes at 15 years of age (752 [52.2%] female). Two trajectories of food insecurity were identified between 1.5 and 13 years of age: high risk (73 children [3.6%]) and low risk (1959 children [96.4%]). At 5 months, the high-risk and low-risk groups differed in household characteristics including income insufficiency (58 [80.6%] vs 405 [21.0%]), single parenthood (21 [29.2%] vs 135 [6.9%]), and parental history of depression (mothers: 30 [43.5%] vs 411 [21.7%]; fathers: 12 [32.4%] vs 209 [13.5%]). The high-risk trajectory from 1.5 to 13 years of age was associated with cannabis use (β, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.12-0.81), peer bullying (β, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.08-0.77), and dropout potential (β, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.03-0.68) at 15 years of age after adjustment for sex, household income insufficiency, and parental mental health.Conclusions and relevanceIn this cohort study, few children experienced a persistent high risk of food insecurity, which was associated with psychosocial problems later in adolescence after adjustment for confounders including low income. Early identification of risk for food insecurity may guide the delivery of tailored interventions to improve functioning in adolescence.

Project description:BackgroundA growing body of research has confirmed that workplace bullying is a source of distress and poor mental health. Here we summarize the cross-sectional and longitudinal literature on these associations.MethodsSystematic review and meta-analyses on the relation between workplace bullying and mental health.ResultsThe cross-sectional data (65 effect sizes, N = 115.783) showed positive associations between workplace bullying and symptoms of depression (r = .28, 95% CI = .23-.34), anxiety (r = .34, 95% CI = .29-.40) and stress-related psychological complaints (r = .37, 95% CI = .30-.44). Pooling the literature that investigated longitudinal relationships (26 effect sizes, N = 54.450) showed that workplace bullying was related to mental health complaints over time (r = 0.21, 95% CI = 0.13-0.21). Interestingly, baseline mental health problems were associated with subsequent exposure to workplace bullying (r = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.10-0.27; 11 effect sizes, N = 27.028).LimitationsAll data were self-reported, raising the possibility of reporting- and response set bias.ConclusionsWorkplace bullying is consistently, and in a bi-directional manner, associated with reduced mental health. This may call for intervention strategies against bullying at work.

Project description:BackgroundParental separation is associated with mental health problems in adolescence. One suggested pathway for this association is through the accumulated exposure to stress and other negative life events. This study aimed to document the distribution of negative life events among adolescents with separated compared to non-separated parents, and to assess the direct and interactive associations between parental separation, negative life events, and mental health problems in adolescence.MethodsData stem from the cross-sectional population-based youth@hordaland study of adolescents (aged 16-19) conducted in Norway in 2012, providing self-reported information about parental separation, negative life events, and depression-, anxiety-, conduct-, and ADHD symptoms. Regression analyses were used to assess the direct and interactive associations between parental separation, negative life events, and mental health problems.ResultsAdolescents with separated parents had more mental health problems across all symptom scales compared to peers with non-separated parents, with standardized mean differences [SMDs] ranging from 0.15 to 0.20. Negative life events moderately attenuated these differences (reduced the SMDs with about 0.04-0.08, depending on the outcome). However, none of the interactions between parental separation and negative life events on mental health problems were statistically significant.ConclusionsHigher exposure to negative life events explains parts of the association between parental separation and mental health problems in adolescence. However, a parental separation does not seem to increase the vulnerability of the effects of negative life events on adolescents' mental health. Assessing exposure to negative life events is important when providing mental health services to adolescents, particularly to those who have parents separated.
