Pregnant Women's Knowledge of and Attitudes towards Influenza Vaccination during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Poland.

ABSTRACT: Pregnant women are more susceptible to influenza virus infections due to the immunological and physiological changes in the course of pregnancy. Vaccination during pregnancy is a safe and effective method for protecting both the mothers and the infants from influenza and its complications. This study was conducted in order to determine the knowledge and attitudes of Polish pregnant women towards influenza vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic. A questionnaire-based and self-administered study was carried out fully online and a total of 515 women participated. A total of 52% (n = 268) of surveyed women answered that vaccination against influenza during pregnancy was safe. However, only 21% (n = 108) were vaccinated against influenza during their current pregnancy and 17.5% (n = 90) intended to be vaccinated. The participants indicated many concerns about getting vaccinated during pregnancy, but also many benefits that come with the vaccination. General knowledge about influenza, its complications, and vaccination was quite high in the study group.

Project description:ObjectiveThere are few data on lactating women's concerns about receiving COVID-19 vaccination during breastfeeding. This research investigated breastfeeding women's attitudes towards and acceptance or rejection of vaccination.Materials and methodsThis prospective, descriptive, implementation study was conducted in the postpartum ward of Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. In Phase I, 40 breastfeeding women in the postpartum ward at Siriraj Hospital who were willing to participate in the study were interviewed. Phase II comprised questionnaire development and data validation. The combined multiple choice and scaling questionnaires designed based on the results from comprehensive interviews of phase I were used in the study. The questionnaire was administered to 400 participants in Phase III.Main outcome measuresBreastfeeding women's attitudes towards and acceptance and rejection of COVID-19 vaccination.ResultsThe vast majority of participants (372/400 [93.0 %]) were vaccinated predelivery. Most of the subgroup of women rejecting vaccination while breastfeeding were unsure whether too frequent vaccination would harm their unborn child (52/99 [52.5 %]; crude odds ratio [cOR], 6.50; 95 % CI, 1.47-28.68; P < 0.001). The level of immunity to the COVID-19 virus did not influence their vaccination decisions (19/99 [19.2 %]; cOR, 2.38; 95 % CI, 1.26-4.47; P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis found a significant association for women agreeing with the proposition that vaccination during pregnancy should not be performed (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.83; 95 % CI, 1.41-16.57; P = 0.043). Most women who rejected vaccination knew its benefits (aOR, 31.84; 95 % CI, 7.16-141.65; P < 0.001).ConclusionsBreastfeeding women generally believed that vaccines reduce infection and disease severity. The women's COVID-19 immunity levels did not affect their acceptance or rejection of vaccination. Some mothers rejected vaccination because of concerns about possible harm to them or their newborns.

Project description:BackgroundNicaragua implemented an influenza vaccination program for pregnant women with high-risk obstetric conditions in 2007. In 2014, the recommendation of influenza vaccination expanded to include all pregnant women. Given the expansion in the recommendation of vaccination, we evaluated knowledge, attitudes and practices of pregnant women and their healthcare providers towards influenza vaccination and its recommendation.MethodsWe conducted surveys among pregnant women and their healthcare providers from June to August 2016 at two hospitals and 140 health facilities in Managua. The questions were adapted from the U.S. national CDC influenza survey and related to knowledge, attitudes and practices about influenza vaccination and barriers to vaccination. We analyzed reasons for not receiving vaccination among pregnant women as well as receipt of vaccination recommendation and offer by their healthcare providers.ResultsOf 1,303 pregnant women enrolled, 42% (5 4 5) reported receiving influenza vaccination in the 2016 season. Of those who reported not receiving vaccination, 46% indicated barriers to vaccination. Pregnant women who were vaccinated were more likely to be aware of the recommendation for vaccination and the risks of influenza illness during pregnancy and to perceive the vaccine as safe and effective, compared to unvaccinated pregnant women (p-values < 0.001). Of the 619 health workers enrolled, over 89% recalled recommending influenza vaccination to all pregnant women, regardless of obstetric risk. Of the 1,223 women who had a prenatal visit between the start date of the influenza vaccination and the time of interview, 44% recalled receiving a recommendation for influenza vaccination and 43% were offered vaccination. Vaccination rates were higher for those receiving a recommendation and offer of vaccination compared with those who received neither (95% vs 5%, p-value < 0.001).ConclusionPregnant women in Managua had positive perceptions of influenza vaccine and were receptive to receiving influenza vaccination, especially after the offer and recommendation by their healthcare providers.
