Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline materials with a variety of applications in gas storage, catalysis, drug delivery or light harvesting. The optimization of those applications requires the characterization of MOF structure in the relevant environment. Dynamic force microscopy has been applied to follow dynamic processes of metal-organic-framework material. We provide images with spatial and time resolutions, respectively, of angstrom and seconds that show that Ce-RPF-8 surfaces immersed in water and glycerol experience a surface reconstruction process that is characterized by the diffusion of the molecular species along the step edges of the open terraces. The rate of the surface reconstruction process depends on the liquid. In water it happens spontaneously while in glycerol is triggered by applying an external force.

Project description:Checkpoint blockade immunotherapy (CBI) elicits durable therapeutic responses by blocking T cell inhibitory pathways of tumors with pre-infiltrated T cells and/or high mutational burden to activate antitumor immunity but is ineffective against poorly immunogenic tumors. Immunogenic radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and chemotherapy have thus been examined as immunomodulatory adjuvants to augment CBI. Dysregulated hormone production has long been linked to tumorigenesis and poor prognosis of various cancers. Herein, we report the use of a Cu-porphyrin nanoscale metal-organic framework (nMOF) to mediate synergistic hormone-triggered chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and light-triggered PDT. The combination of CDT/PDT-based radical therapy with a programmed cell-death ligand 1 blockade effectively extends the local therapeutic effects of CDT/PDT to distant tumors via abscopal effects on mouse tumor models with high levels of estradiol. Our work thus establishes the feasibility of combining nMOF-mediated radical therapy with CBI to elicit systemic antitumor immunity in hormonally dysregulated tumor phenotypes.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as a desirable class of porous materials for energy storage applications, despite their limited conductivity. In the present study, Co-MOF-71 was fabricated as a high-performance supercapacitor electrode at ambient temperature using a fast and straightforward, one-pot cold plasma method. A supercapacitor electrode based on Co-MOF@rGO was also synthesized by adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO) during processing to increase the capacitance retention and stability after 4000 cycles from 80 to 95.4%. The Co-MOF-71 electrode provided a specific capacitance (Cs) of 651.7 Fg-1 at 1 Ag-1, whereas the Co-MOF@rGO electrode produced a Cs value of 967.68 Fg-1 at 1 Ag-1. In addition, we fabricated an asymmetric device (Co-MOF@rGO||AC) using Co-MOF-rGO as a high-rate positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as a negative electrode. This hybrid device has a remarkable specific energy and power density. The combination of MOFs with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in a cold plasma environment resulted in the formation of a three-dimensional nanostructure composed of nanosheets. This nanostructure exhibited an increased number of electroactive sites, providing benefits for energy storage applications.

Project description:Optimizing the orientation, crystallinity, and domain size of components within organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices is key to maximizing their performance. Here a broadly applicable approach for enhancing the morphology of bulk heterojunction OPV devices using metal-organic nanosheets (MONs) as additives is demonstrated. It is shown that addition of porphyrin-based MONs to devices with fully amorphous donor polymers lead to small improvements in performance attributed to increased light absorption due to nanosheets. However, devices based on semi-crystalline polymers show remarkable improvements in power conversion efficiency (PCE), more than doubling in some cases compared to reference devices without nanosheets. In particular, this approach led to the development of PffBT4T2OD-MON-PCBM device with a PCE of 12.3%, which to the authors' knowledge is the highest performing fullerene based OPV device reported in literature to date. Detailed analysis of these devices shows that the presence of the nanosheets results in a higher fraction of face-on oriented polymer crystals in the films. These results therefore demonstrate the potential of this highly tunable class of two-dimensional nanomaterials as additives for enhancing the morphology, and therefore performance, of semi-crystalline organic electronic devices.

Project description:By virtue of their open network structures and low densities, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are soft materials that exhibit elastic instabilities at low applied stresses. The conventional strategy for improving elastic stability is to increase the connectivity of the underlying MOF network, which necessarily increases the material density and reduces the porosity. Here we demonstrate an alternative paradigm, whereby elastic stability is enhanced in a MOF with an aperiodic network topology. We use a combination of variable-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements and coarse-grained lattice-dynamical calculations to interrogate the high-pressure behaviour of the topologically aperiodic system TRUMOF-1, which we compare against that of its ordered congener MOF-5. We show that the topology of the former quenches the elastic instability responsible for pressure-induced framework collapse in the latter, much as irregularity in the shapes and sizes of stones acts to prevent cooperative mechanical failure in drystone walls. Our results establish aperiodicity as a counter-intuitive design motif in engineering the mechanical properties of framework structures that is relevant to MOFs and larger-scale architectures alike.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) show promise as safe electrolytes for electrochemical devices. However, the conductivity of ILs decreases markedly at low temperatures because of strong interactions arising between the component ions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are appropriate microporous host materials that can control the dynamics of ILs via the nanosizing of ILs and tunable interactions of MOFs with the guest ILs. Here, for the first time, we report on the ionic conductivity of an IL incorporated within a MOF. The system studied consisted of EMI-TFSA (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide) and ZIF-8 (Zn(MeIM)2, H(MeIM) = 2-methylimidazole) as the IL and the MOF, respectively. While the ionic conductivity of bulk EMI-TFSA showed a sharp decrease arising from freezing, the EMI-TFSA@ZIF-8 showed no marked decrease because there was no phase transition. The ionic conductivity of EMI-TFSA@ZIF-8 was higher than that of bulk EMI-TFSA below 250 K. This result points towards a novel method by which to design electrolytes for electrochemical devices such as batteries that can operate at low temperatures.

Project description:A metal-organic framework (MOF) is a three-dimensional crystalline compound made from organic ligands and metals. The cross-linkage between organic ligands and metals creates a network of coordination polymers containing adjustable voids with a high total surface area. This special feature of MOF made it possible to form a host-guest interaction with small molecules, such as ionic liquid (IL), which can alter the phase behavior and improve the performance in battery applications. The molecular interactions of MOF and IL are, however, hard to understand due to the limited number of computational studies. In this study, the structural parameters of a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [EMIM][TFSI] were investigated via a combined experimental and computational approach using the linker model approach. When IL was loaded, the bond length and bond angle of organic linkers were distorted due to the increased electron density surrounding the framework. The increase in molecular orbital energy after confining IL stabilized the structure of this hybrid system. The molecular interactions study revealed that the combination of UiO-66 and [EMIM][TFSI] could be a promising candidate as an electrolyte material in an energy storage system.

Project description:Traditional cold chain systems of collection, transportation, and storage of biofluid specimens for eventual analysis pose a huge financial and environmental burden. These systems are impractical in pre-hospital and resource-limited settings, where refrigeration and electricity are not reliable or even available. Here, we develop an innovative technology using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a novel class of organic-inorganic hybrids with high thermal stability, as encapsulates for preserving the integrity of protein biomarkers in biofluids under ambient or non-refrigerated storage conditions. We encapsulate prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in whole patient plasma using hydrophilic zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) for preservation at 40 °C for 4 weeks and eventual on-demand reconstitution for antibody-based assays with recovery above 95% compared to storage at -20 °C. Without ZIF-90 encapsulation, only 10-30% of the PSA immunoactivity remained. Furthermore, we demonstrate encapsulation of multiple cancer biomarker proteins in whole patient plasma using ZIF-8 or ZIF-90 encapsulants for eventual on-demand reconstitution and analysis after 1 week at 40 °C. Overall, MOF encapsulation of patient biofluids is important as climate change may be affecting the stability and increase costs of maintaining biospecimen cold chain custody for the collection, transportation, and storage of biospecimens prior to analysis or for biobanking regardless of any countries' affluence.

Project description:The exfoliation of bulk two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) into few-layered nanosheets has attracted much attention recently. In this work, an environmental-friendly route has been developed for layered-MOF (MAMS-1) delamination using deep eutectic solvent (DES), which is more sustainable and efficient alternative than conventional organic solvents for MOF nanosheet preparation. Under sonication condition, DES as solvents, the highest exfoliation rate of MAMS-1 is up to 70% with two host layers via poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) surfactant-assisted method. The presence of tert-butyl exteriors and the atomically thickness endow the MOF nanosheets stable suspension for at least one month. Due to the 2D structure and excellent stability, MAMS-1 nanosheet (MAMS-1-NS) was chosen as a good candidate to encapsulate Eu3+ cations. The obtained Eu3+@MAMS-1-NS acts as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor through fluorescence quenching, and can specifically recognize Fe3+ (LOD = 0.40 μM, KSV = 1.05 × 105 M-l), Hg2+ (LOD = 0.038 μM, KSV = 5.78 × 106 M-l), Cr2O72- (LOD = 0.33 μM, KSV = 1.55 × 105 M-l) and MnO4- (LOD = 0.088 μM, KSV = 4.49 × 105 M-l). Compared with bulk Eu3+@MAMS-1, the sensitivity of Eu3+@MAMS-1-NS is greatly improved owing to its ultrathin nanosheet morphology and highly accessible active sites on the surface.

Project description:Thermal transport in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an essential but frequently overlooked property. Among the small number of existing studies on thermal transport in MOFs, even fewer have considered explicitly the influence of defects. However, defects naturally exist in MOF crystals and are known to influence many of their material properties. In this work, we investigate the influence of both randomly and symmetrically distributed defects on the thermal conductivity of the MOF UiO-66. Two types of defects were examined: missing linker and missing cluster defects. For symmetrically distributed (i.e., spatially correlated) defects, we considered three experimentally resolved defect nanodomains of UiO-66 with underlying topologies of bcu, reo, and scu. We observed that both randomly distributed missing linker and missing cluster defects typically decrease thermal conductivity, as expected. However, we found that the spatial arrangement of defects can significantly impact thermal conductivity. In particular, the spatially correlated missing linker defect nanodomain (bcu topology) displayed an intriguing anisotropy, with the thermal conductivity along a particular direction being higher than that of the defect-free UiO-66. We attribute this unusual defect-induced increase in thermal conductivity to the removal of the linkers perpendicular to the primary direction of heat transport. These perpendicular linkers act as phonon scattering sources such that removing them increases thermal conductivity in that direction. Moreover, we also observed an increase in phonon group velocity, which might also contribute to the unusual increase. Overall, we show that structural defects could be an additional lever to tune the thermal conductivity of MOFs.
