Growth of hopper-shaped CsPbCl₃ crystals and their exciton polariton emission.

ABSTRACT: CsPbCl₃ is an attractive wide-bandgap perovskite semiconductor. Herein, we have grown hopper-shaped CsPbCl₃ crystals in a solution droplet dripped on a heated substrate. During the growth, we have observed the impacts of the coffee ring effect and Marangoni flow, which may result in the hopper shape. Their photoluminescence spectra feature double peaks, which are located at 413.9 nm and 422.0 nm, respectively, and the latter increases faster in intensity than the former as the excitation power increases. We believe that the higher-energy peak originates from the excitonic emission and the lower-energy one is from the polaritons' emission, where the polaritons are generated in the exciton-exciton inelastic scattering process. Based on such an explanation, the exciton binding energy of CsPbCl₃ is estimated to be 76.7 meV in our experiments, consistent with the previous reports.

Long-Lived Dark Exciton Emission in Mn-Doped CsPbCl3 Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:The unusual temperature dependence of exciton emission decay in CsPbX3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) attracts considerable attention. Upon cooling, extremely short (sub-ns) lifetimes were observed and were explained by an inverted bright-dark state splitting. Here, we report temperature-dependent exciton lifetimes for CsPbCl3 NCs doped with 0-41% Mn2+. The exciton emission lifetime increases upon cooling from 300 to 75 K. Upon further cooling, a strong and fast sub-ns decay component develops. However, the decay is strongly biexponential and also a weak, slow decay component is observed with a ∼40-50 ns lifetime below 20 K. The slow component has a ∼5-10 times stronger relative intensity in Mn-doped NCs compared to that in undoped CsPbCl3 NCs. The temperature dependence of the slow component resembles that of CdSe and PbSe quantum dots with an activation energy of ∼19 meV for the dark-bright state splitting. Based on our observations, we propose an alternative explanation for the short, sub-ns exciton decay time in CsPbX3 NCs. Slow bright-dark state relaxation at cryogenic temperatures gives rise to almost exclusively bright state emission. Incorporation of Mn2+ or high magnetic fields enhances the bright-dark state relaxation and allows for the observation of the long-lived dark state emission at cryogenic temperatures.

Hopper Growth of Salt Crystals.

Project description:The growth of hopper crystals is observed for many substances, but the mechanism of their formation remains ill understood. Here we investigate their growth by performing evaporation experiments on small volumes of salt solutions. We show that sodium chloride crystals that grow very fast from a highly supersaturated solution form a peculiar form of hopper crystal consisting of a series of connected miniature versions of the original cubic crystal. The transition between cubic and such hopper growth happens at a well-defined supersaturation where the growth rate of the cubic crystal reaches a maximum (?6.5 ± 1.8 ?m/s). Above this threshold, the growth rate varies as the third power of supersaturation, showing that a new mechanism, controlled by the maximum speed of surface integration of new molecules, induces the hopper growth of cubic crystals in cascade.

High-energy side-peak emission of exciton-polariton condensates in high density regime.

Project description:In a standard semiconductor laser, electrons and holes recombine via stimulated emission to emit coherent light, in a process that is far from thermal equilibrium. Exciton-polariton condensates-sharing the same basic device structure as a semiconductor laser, consisting of quantum wells coupled to a microcavity-have been investigated primarily at densities far below the Mott density for signatures of Bose-Einstein condensation. At high densities approaching the Mott density, exciton-polariton condensates are generally thought to revert to a standard semiconductor laser, with the loss of strong coupling. Here, we report the observation of a photoluminescence sideband at high densities that cannot be accounted for by conventional semiconductor lasing. This also differs from an upper-polariton peak by the observation of the excitation power dependence in the peak-energy separation. Our interpretation as a persistent coherent electron-hole-photon coupling captures several features of this sideband, although a complete understanding of the experimental data is lacking. A full understanding of the observations should lead to a development in non-equilibrium many-body physics.

Transient exciton-polariton dynamics in WSe2 by ultrafast near-field imaging.

Project description:Van der Waals (vdW) materials offer an exciting platform for strong light-matter interaction enabled by their polaritonic modes and the associated deep subwavelength light confinement. Semiconductor vdW materials such as WSe2 are of particular interest for photonic and quantum integrated technologies because they sustain visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) exciton-polariton (EP) modes at room temperature. Here, we develop a unique spatiotemporal imaging technique at the femtosecond-nanometric scale and observe the EP dynamics in WSe2 waveguides. Our method, based on a novel ultrafast broadband intrapulse pump-probe near-field imaging, allows direct visualization of EP formation and propagation in WSe2 showing, at room temperature, ultraslow EP with a group velocity of v g ~ 0.017c. Our imaging method paves the way for in situ ultrafast coherent control and extreme spatiotemporal imaging of condensed matter.

Exciton-polariton Josephson junctions at finite temperatures.

Project description:We consider finite temperature effects in a non-standard Bose-Hubbard model for an exciton- polariton Josephson junction (JJ) that is characterised by complicated potential energy landscapes (PEL) consisting of sets of barriers and wells. We show that the transition between thermal activation (classical) and tunneling (quantum) regimes exhibits universal features of the first and second order phase transition (PT) depending on the PEL for two polariton condensates that might be described as transition from the thermal to the quantum annealing regime. In the presence of dissipation the relative phase of two condensates exhibits non-equilibrium PT from the quantum regime characterized by efficient tunneling of polaritons to the regime of permanent Josephson or Rabi oscillations, where the tunneling is suppressed, respectively. This analysis paves the way for the application of coupled polariton condensates for the realisation of a quantum annealing algorithm in presently experimentally accessible semiconductor microcavities possessing high (105 and more) Q-factors.

Self-Interference of Exciton Emission in Organic Single Crystals Visualized by Energy-Momentum Spectroscopy.

Project description:We employ energy-momentum spectroscopy on isolated organic single crystals with micrometer-sized dimensions. The single crystals are grown from a thiophene-based oligomer and are excellent low-loss active waveguides that support multiple guided modes. Excitation of the crystals with a diffraction-limited laser spot results in emission into guided modes as well as into quasi-discrete radiation modes. These radiation modes are mapped in energy-momentum space and give rise to dispersive interference patterns. On the basis of the known geometry of the crystals, especially the height, the characteristics of the interference maxima allow one to determine the energy dependence of two components of the anisotropic complex refractive index. Moreover, the method is suited to identify the orientation of molecules within (and around) a crystalline structure.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Nonequilibrium Organic Exciton-Polariton Condensates.

Project description:Exciton-polariton condensation in organic materials, arising from the coupling of Frenkel excitons to the electromagnetic field in cavities, is a phenomenon resulting in low-threshold coherent light emission among other fascinating properties. The exact mechanisms leading to the thermalization of organic exciton-polaritons toward condensation are not yet understood, partly due to the complexity of organic molecules and partly to the canonical microcavities used in condensation studies, which limit broadband studies. Here, we exploit an entirely different cavity design, i.e., an array of plasmonic nanoparticles strongly coupled to organic molecules, to successfully measure the broadband ultrafast dynamics of the strongly coupled system. Sharp features emerge in the transient spectrum originating from the formation of a condensate with a well-defined molecular vibrational composition. These measurements represent the first direct experimental evidence that molecular vibrations drive condensation in organic systems and provide a benchmark for modeling the dynamics of organic-based exciton-polariton condensates.

Controlled Growth of Srx Ba1-x Nb2 O6 Hopper- and Cube-Shaped Nanostructures by Hydrothermal Synthesis.

Project description:Controlling the shape and size of nanostructured materials has been a topic of interest in the field of material science for decades. In this work, the ferroelectric material Srx Ba1-x Nb2 O6 (x=0.32-0.82, SBN) was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, and the morphology is controllably changed from cube-shaped to hollow-ended structures based on a fundamental understanding of the precursor chemistry. Synchrotron X-ray total scattering and PDF analysis was used to reveal the structure of the Nb-acid precursor, showing Lindqvist-like motifs. The changing growth mechanism, from layer-by-layer growth forming cubes to hopper-growth giving hollow-ended structures, is attributed to differences in supersaturation. Transmission electron microscopy revealed an inhomogeneous composition along the length of the hollow-ended particles, which is explained by preferential formation of the high entropy composition, SBN33, at the initial stages of particle nucleation and growth.

Room temperature organic exciton-polariton condensate in a lattice.

Project description:Interacting Bosons in artificial lattices have emerged as a modern platform to explore collective manybody phenomena and exotic phases of matter as well as to enable advanced on-chip simulators. On chip, exciton-polaritons emerged as a promising system to implement and study bosonic non-linear systems in lattices, demanding cryogenic temperatures. We discuss an experiment conducted on a polaritonic lattice at ambient conditions: We utilize fluorescent proteins providing ultra-stable Frenkel excitons. Their soft nature allows for mechanically shaping them in the photonic lattice. We demonstrate controlled loading of the coherent condensate in distinct orbital lattice modes of different symmetries. Finally, we explore the self-localization of the condensate in a gap-state, driven by the interplay of effective interaction and negative effective mass in our lattice. We believe that this work establishes organic polaritons as a serious contender to the well-established GaAs platform for a wide range of applications relying on coherent Bosons in lattices.

Spin polarized semimagnetic exciton-polariton condensate in magnetic field.

Project description:Owing to their integer spin, exciton-polaritons in microcavities can be used for observation of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation in solid state. However, spin-related phenomena of such condensates are difficult to explore due to the relatively small Zeeman effect of standard semiconductor microcavity systems and the strong tendency to sustain an equal population of two spin components, which precludes the observation of condensates with a well defined spin projection along the axis of the system. The enhancement of the Zeeman splitting can be achieved by introducing magnetic ions to the quantum wells, and consequently forming semimagnetic polaritons. In this system, increasing magnetic field can induce polariton condensation at constant excitation power. Here we evidence the spin polarization of a semimagnetic polaritons condensate exhibiting a circularly polarized emission over 95% even in a moderate magnetic field of about 3 T. Furthermore, we show that unlike nonmagnetic polaritons, an increase on excitation power results in an increase of the semimagnetic polaritons condensate spin polarization. These properties open new possibilities for testing theoretically predicted phenomena of spin polarized condensate.
