Protection of lithium anodes by fibrous silica nanospheres.

ABSTRACT: Lithium metal (anode) has attracted significant attention for use in lithium-metal batteries due to its high energy density, but its practical application is still hindered by the dendrite growth during the battery charging process. Here, fibrous silica nanospheres were prepared via a direct hydrothermal reaction and coated on a separator to form a composite electrode with lithium sheets. Upon using this composite electrode in a symmetrical cell, the charge and discharge curves became more stable and the overpotential was alleviated compared with that of the bare lithium metal electrode. Meanwhile, the coulombic efficiency obtained from the Li‖Cu cell remained above 95.9% after 200 cycles at 0.5 mA h cm^-2. The validity of using this composite electrode in the Li‖LFP (LiFePO₄, lithium iron phosphate) cells was also evaluated. The results show that the composite electrode can help restrict the growth of lithium dendrites and the accumulation of dead lithium.

Heteroatom Doped-Carbon Nanospheres as Anodes in Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Long cycle performance is a crucial requirement in energy storage devices. New formulations and/or improvement of "conventional" materials have been investigated in order to achieve this target. Here we explore the performance of a novel type of carbon nanospheres (CNSs) with three heteroatom co-doped (nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur) and high specific surface area as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. The CNSs were obtained from carbonization of highly-crosslinked organo (phosphazene) nanospheres (OPZs) of 300 nm diameter. The OPZs were synthesized via a single and facile step of polycondensation reaction between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol (BPS). The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed a high heteroatom-doping content in the structure of CNSs while the textural evaluation from the N₂ sorption isotherms revealed the presence of micro- and mesopores and a high specific surface area of 875 m²/g. The CNSs anode showed remarkable stability and coulombic efficiency in a long charge-discharge cycling up to 1000 cycles at 1C rate, delivering about 130 mA·h·g-1. This study represents a step toward smart engineering of inexpensive materials with practical applications for energy devices.

Chemical Vapor Transport Synthesis of Fibrous Red Phosphorus Crystal as Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Red phosphorus (RP) is considered to be the most promising anode material for lithium-Ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity and suitable voltage platform. However, its poor electrical conductivity (10-12 S/m) and the large volume changes that accompany the cycling process severely limit its practical application. Herein, we have prepared fibrous red phosphorus (FP) that possesses better electrical conductivity (10-4 S/m) and a special structure by chemical vapor transport (CVT) to improve electrochemical performance as an anode material for LIBs. Compounding it with graphite (C) by a simple ball milling method, the composite material (FP-C) shows a high reversible specific capacity of 1621 mAh/g, excellent high-rate performance and long cycle life with a capacity of 742.4 mAh/g after 700 cycles at a high current density of 2 A/g, and coulombic efficiencies reaching almost 100% for each cycle.

Well-Dispersed Co/CoO/C Nanospheres with Tunable Morphology as High-Performance Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Well-dispersed Co/CoO/C nanospheres have been designed and constructed through a facile electrospinning method with a strategy controlling the morphology of nanocomposites via adjusting the pre-oxidized and heat treatments. Scanning electron microscopy results reveal that the as-synthesized sample pre-oxidized at 275 °C shows better spherical morphology with a diameter of around 300 nm without conspicuous agglomeration. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the coexistence of cobalt and cobalt monoxide in the sample. Furthermore, the electrochemical tests reveal that the sample pre-oxidized at 275 °C displays excellent cycling stability with only 0.016% loss per cycle even after 400 cycles at 1000 mA·g-1 and enhanced high-rate capability with a specific discharge capacity of 354 mA·g-1 at 2000 mA·g-1. Besides, the sample pre-oxidized at 275 °C shows a specific capacity of 755 mA·g-1 at 100 mA·g-1 after 95 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance has been ascribed to the well dispersion of nanospheres, the improved electronic conductivity, and the structural integrity contribution from the carbon and cobalt coexisting nanocomposite. The strategy for preparing well-dispersed nanospheres by adjusting pre-oxidized and annealing processes could have insight for other oxide nanosphere synthesis.

In-situ Grown SnO2 Nanospheres on Reduced GO Nanosheets as Advanced Anodes for Lithium-ion Batteries.

Project description:Nanostructured tin dioxide (SnO2) has emerged as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity (1494 mA h g-1) and excellent stability. Unfortunately, the rapid capacity fading and poor electrical conductivity of bulk SnO2 material restrict its practical application. Here, SnO2 nanospheres/reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (SRG) are fabricated through in-situ growth of carbon-coated SnO2 using template-based approach. The nanosheet structure with the external layer of about several nanometers thickness can not only accommodate the volume change of Sn lattice during cycling but also enhance the electrical conductivity effectively. Benefited from such design, the SRG composites could deliver an initial discharge capacity of 1212.3 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, outstanding cycling performance of 1335.6 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g-1, and superior rate capability of 502.1 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1 after 10 cycles. Finally, it is believed that this method could provide a versatile and effective process to prepare other metal-oxide/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) 2D nanocomposites.

Self-Assembled Porous-Silica within N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers as Ultra-flexible Anodes for Soft Lithium Batteries.

Project description:Silica is an attractive anode material for soft lithium batteries owing to its high specific capacity, but it suffers severe problems of large volume change and unstable solid-electrolyte interface. Moreover, it is a challenge to fabricate flexible silica anodes. Here, we report a low-cost and scalable strategy to create flexible anodes of N-doped carbon nanofiber-confined porous silica (p-SiO2@N-CNF) by developing a sol-gel electrospinning process followed by carbonization. This approach causes the p-SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) to be self-assembled within the N-CNFs, which act like elastomer and electrolyte barrier to accommodate volume changes and to enhance the stability of SiO2, whereas the NPs act as soft plasticizer providing strength to the CNF skeletons. Benefiting from the hierarchical structures, the anodes with high p-SiO2 loadings (>1.6 mg/cm2) exhibit exceptional cycling performance (>1,000 cycles) in terms of bending, current rate, and capacity. Moreover, the batteries remain stable when discharging at 0.5 C and charging at 2 C.

Rigid TiO2-x coated mesoporous hollow Si nanospheres with high structure stability for lithium-ion battery anodes.

Project description:Rigid oxygen-deficient TiO2-x coated mesoporous hollow Si nanospheres with a mechanically and electrically robust structure have been constructed through a facile method for high-performance Li-ion battery anodes. The mesoporous hollow structure provides enough inner void space for the expansion of Si. The oxygen-deficient TiO2-x coating has functions in three aspects: (1) avoiding direct contact between Si and the electrolyte; (2) suppressing the outward expansion of the mesoporous hollow Si nanospheres; (3) improving the conductivity of the composite. The combined effect leads to high interfacial stability and structural integrity of both the material nanoparticles and the whole electrode. By virtue of the rational design, the composite yields a high reversible specific capacity of 1750.4 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1, an excellent cycling stability of 1303.1 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1 with 84.5% capacity retention after 500 cycles, and a high rate capability of 907.6 mA h g-1 even at 4 A g-1.

Operando monitoring the lithium spatial distribution of lithium metal anodes.

Project description:Electrical mobility demands an increase of battery energy density beyond current lithium-ion technology. A crucial bottleneck is the development of safe and reversible lithium-metal anodes, which is challenged by short circuits caused by lithium-metal dendrites and a short cycle life owing to the reactivity with electrolytes. The evolution of the lithium-metal-film morphology is relatively poorly understood because it is difficult to monitor lithium, in particular during battery operation. Here we employ operando neutron depth profiling as a noninvasive and versatile technique, complementary to microscopic techniques, providing the spatial distribution/density of lithium during plating and stripping. The evolution of the lithium-metal-density-profile is shown to depend on the current density, electrolyte composition and cycling history, and allows monitoring the amount and distribution of inactive lithium over cycling. A small amount of reversible lithium uptake in the copper current collector during plating and stripping is revealed, providing insights towards improved lithium-metal anodes.

Confronting the Challenges in Lithium Anodes for Lithium Metal Batteries.

Project description:With the low redox potential of -3.04 V (vs SHE) and ultrahigh theoretical capacity of 3862 mAh g-1 , lithium metal has been considered as promising anode material. However, lithium metal battery has ever suffered a trough in the past few decades due to its safety issues. Over the years, the limited energy density of the lithium-ion battery cannot meet the growing demands of the advanced energy storage devices. Therefore, lithium metal anodes receive renewed attention, which have the potential to achieve high-energy batteries. In this review, the history of the lithium anode is reviewed first. Then the failure mechanism of the lithium anode is analyzed, including dendrite, dead lithium, corrosion, and volume expansion of the lithium anode. Further, the strategies to alleviate the lithium anode issues in recent years are discussed emphatically. Eventually, remaining challenges of these strategies and possible research directions of lithium-anode modification are presented to inspire innovation of lithium anode.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Interfaces Enable the Preparation of Nitrogen-Doped Hollow Carbon Nanospheres as High-Performance Anodes for Lithium and Potassium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:An abundant hollow nanostructure is crucial for fast Li+ and K+ diffusion paths and sufficient electrolyte penetration, which creates a highly conductive network for ionic and electronic transport. In this study, we successfully developed a molecular-bridge-linked, organic-inorganic hybrid interface that enables the preparation of in situ nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanospheres. Moreover, the prepared HCNSs, with high nitrogen content of up to 10.4%, feature homogeneous and regular morphologies. The resulting HCNSs exhibit excellent lithium and potassium storage properties when used as electrode materials. Specifically, the HCNS-800 electrode demonstrates a stable reversible discharge capacity of 642 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1 after 500 cycles for LIBs. Similarly, the electrode maintains a discharge capacity of 205 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 500 cycles for KIBs. Moreover, when coupled with a high-mass-loading LiFePO4 cathode to design full cells, the HCNS-800‖LiFePO4 cells provide a specific discharge capacity of 139 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C. These results indicate that the HCNS electrode has promising potential for use in high-energy and environmentally sustainable lithium-based and potassium-based batteries.

Applications of Carbon Nanotubes for Lithium Ion Battery Anodes.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have displayed great potential as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to their unique structural, mechanical, and electrical properties. The measured reversible lithium ion capacities of CNT-based anodes are considerably improved compared to the conventional graphite-based anodes. Additionally, the opened structure and enriched chirality of CNTs can help to improve the capacity and electrical transport in CNT-based LIBs. Therefore, the modification of CNTs and design of CNT structure provide strategies for improving the performance of CNT-based anodes. CNTs could also be assembled into free-standing electrodes without any binder or current collector, which will lead to increased specific energy density for the overall battery design. In this review, we discuss the mechanism of lithium ion intercalation and diffusion in CNTs, and the influence of different structures and morphologies on their performance as anode materials for LIBs.
