Phonon thermal conductivity reduction in silicene nanotubes with isotope substitution.

ABSTRACT: We used molecular dynamics simulations to study the isotopic doping effects on phonon thermal conductivity in armchair silicene nanotubes (SNTs). The phonon thermal conductivity of armchair SNTs can be effectively tuned with isotope substitution. Randomly and superlattice-structured isotopic doping can significantly reduce thermal conductivity. By analyzing the phonon vibrational spectrum, we reveal the underlying physical insights into the relationship between randomly isotopic doping concentration and thermal conductivity. Given the same doping concentration, the superlattice-structured doping method can reduce thermal conductivity more significantly than the disordered doping. For the isotopic superlattice doping method, the completion between the phonon interfacial scattering and phonon tunneling may cause minimum thermal conductivity at the critical period length. This study provides a possible means to effectively reduce the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric SNTs through isotopic doping engineering.

Giant isotope effect on phonon dispersion and thermal conductivity in methylammonium lead iodide.

Project description:Lead halide perovskites are strong candidates for high-performance low-cost photovoltaics, light emission, and detection applications. A hot-phonon bottleneck effect significantly extends the cooling time of hot charge carriers, which thermalize through carrier-optic phonon scattering, followed by optic phonon decay to acoustic phonons and finally thermal conduction. To understand these processes, we adjust the lattice dynamics independently of electronics by changing isotopes. We show that doubling the mass of hydrogen in methylammonium lead iodide by replacing protons with deuterons causes a large 20 to 50% softening of the longitudinal acoustic phonons near zone boundaries, reduces thermal conductivity by ~50%, and slows carrier relaxation kinetics. Phonon softening is attributed to anticrossing with the slowed libration modes of the deuterated molecules and the reduced thermal conductivity to lowered phonon velocities. Our results reveal how tuning the organic molecule dynamics enables control of phonons important to thermal conductivity and the hot-phonon bottleneck.

Phonon Thermal Transport in Silicene/Graphene Heterobilayer Nanostructures: Effect of Interlayer Interactions.

Project description:Heterostructuring, as a promising route to optimize the physical properties of 2D materials, has attracted great attention from the academic community. In this paper, we investigated the room-temperature in-plane and cross-plane phonon thermal transport in silicene/graphene van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures using molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulation results demonstrated that heat current along the graphene layer is remarkably larger than that along the silicene layer, which suggests that graphene dominates the thermal transport in silicene/graphene heterostructures. The in-plane phonon thermal conductivity of the silicene/graphene heterostructures could be a compromise between monolayer graphene and monolayer silicene. Heterostructuring can remarkably reduce the in-plane thermal conductivity of the graphene layer but increase the in-plane thermal conductivity of the silicene layer in heterobilayers compared with the freestanding monolayer counterparts because of their different structures. We also simulated the interlayer interaction strength effect on the in-plane phonon thermal conductivity and cross-plane interfacial thermal resistance of silicene/graphene heterostructures. Total in-plane phonon thermal conductivity and interfacial thermal resistance both decrease with the increase in the interlayer interaction strength in the silicene/graphene heterobilayers. In addition, the calculated interfacial thermal resistance shows the effect of the thermal transport direction across the interface. This study provides a useful reference for the thermal management regulation of 2D vdW heterostructures.

Robust Metallic Nanolaminates Having Phonon-Glass Thermal Conductivity.

Project description:Heat transfer phenomena in multilayer structures have gained interest due to their promising use in thermal insulation and thermoelectricity applications. In such systems, nanostructuring has been used to introduce moderate interfacial density, and it has been demonstrated that interfacial thermal resistance plays a crucial role in reducing thermal conductivity κ. Nevertheless, the main constraint for actual applications is related to their tiny size because they are extremely thin to establish appreciable temperature gradients. In this work, by severe plastic deformation process of accumulative roll bonding (ARB), a 250 µm thick Cu-Nb multilayer containing more than 8000 interfaces with periods below 40 nm was obtained, enabling the production of bulk metallic nanolaminates with ultralow κ. Multilayers present an ultralow κ of ∼0.81 W/mK at 300 K, which is 100 times smaller than its Cu-Nb bulk counterpart, and even lower than the amorphous lattice limit for the Cu-Nb thin film system. By using electron diffusive mismatch model (EDMM), we argue that both electrons diffusively scattering at interface and those ballistically crossing the constituents are responsible for heat conduction in the Cu-Nb multilayers at nanoscale. Hence, ARB Cu-Nb multilayers are intriguing candidate materials which can prove avenues to achieve stable ultralow κ thermal barriers for robust applications.

Anomalous strain effect on the thermal conductivity of low-buckled two-dimensional silicene.

Project description:The thermal conductivity of two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, typically decreases when tensile strain is applied, which softens their phonon modes. Here, we report an anomalous strain effect on the thermal conductivity of monolayer silicene, a representative low-buckled two-dimensional (LB-2D) material. ReaxFF-based molecular dynamics simulations are performed to show that biaxially stretched monolayer silicene exhibits a remarkable increase in thermal conductivity, by as much as 10 times the freestanding value, with increasing applied strain in the range of [0, 0.1], which is attributed to increased contributions from long-wavelength phonons. A further increase in strain in the range of [0.11, 0.18] results in a plateau of the thermal conductivity in an oscillatory manner, governed by a unique dynamic bonding behavior under extreme loading. This anomalous effect reveals new physical insights into the thermal properties of LB-2D materials and may provide some guidelines for designing heat management and energy conversion devices based on such materials.

Phonon stability boundary and deep elastic strain engineering of lattice thermal conductivity.

Project description:Recent studies have reported the experimental discovery that nanoscale specimens of even a natural material, such as diamond, can be deformed elastically to as much as 10% tensile elastic strain at room temperature without the onset of permanent damage or fracture. Computational work combining ab initio calculations and machine learning (ML) algorithms has further demonstrated that the bandgap of diamond can be altered significantly purely by reversible elastic straining. These findings open up unprecedented possibilities for designing materials and devices with extreme physical properties and performance characteristics for a variety of technological applications. However, a general scientific framework to guide the design of engineering materials through such elastic strain engineering (ESE) has not yet been developed. By combining first-principles calculations with ML, we present here a general approach to map out the entire phonon stability boundary in six-dimensional strain space, which can guide the ESE of a material without phase transitions. We focus on ESE of vibrational properties, including harmonic phonon dispersions, nonlinear phonon scattering, and thermal conductivity. While the framework presented here can be applied to any material, we show as an example demonstration that the room-temperature lattice thermal conductivity of diamond can be increased by more than 100% or reduced by more than 95% purely by ESE, without triggering phonon instabilities. Such a framework opens the door for tailoring of thermal-barrier, thermoelectric, and electro-optical properties of materials and devices through the purposeful design of homogeneous or inhomogeneous strains.

Vibrational hierarchy leads to dual-phonon transport in low thermal conductivity crystals.

Project description:Many low-thermal-conductivity (κL) crystals show intriguing temperature (T) dependence of κL: κL ∝ T-1 (crystal-like) at intermediate temperatures whereas weak T-dependence (glass-like) at high temperatures. It has been in debate whether thermal transport can still be described by phonons at the Ioffe-Regel limit. In this work, we propose that most phonons are still well defined for thermal transport, whereas they carry heat via dual channels: normal phonons described by the Boltzmann transport equation theory, and diffuson-like phonons described by the diffusion theory. Three physics-based criteria are incorporated into first-principles calculations to judge mode-by-mode between the two phonon channels. Case studies on La2Zr2O7 and Tl3VSe4 show that normal phonons dominate low temperatures while diffuson-like phonons dominate high temperatures. Our present dual-phonon theory enlightens the physics of hierarchical phonon transport as approaching the Ioffe-Regel limit and provides a numerical method that should be practically applicable to many materials with vibrational hierarchy.

Ultralow thermal conductivity from transverse acoustic phonon suppression in distorted crystalline α-MgAgSb.

Project description:Low thermal conductivity is favorable for preserving the temperature gradient between the two ends of a thermoelectric material, in order to ensure continuous electron current generation. In high-performance thermoelectric materials, there are two main low thermal conductivity mechanisms: the phonon anharmonic in PbTe and SnSe, and phonon scattering resulting from the dynamic disorder in AgCrSe2 and CuCrSe2, which have been successfully revealed by inelastic neutron scattering. Using neutron scattering and ab initio calculations, we report here a mechanism of static local structure distortion combined with phonon-anharmonic-induced ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb. Since the transverse acoustic phonons are almost fully scattered by the compound's intrinsic distorted rocksalt sublattice, the heat is mainly transported by the longitudinal acoustic phonons. The ultralow thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb is attributed to its atomic dynamics being altered by the structure distortion, which presents a possible microscopic route to enhance the performance of similar thermoelectric materials.

Topological metal of NaBi with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and electron-phonon superconductivity.

Project description:By means of first-principles and ab initio tight-binding calculations, we found that the compound of NaBi is a three-dimensional non-trivial topological metal. Its topological feature can be confirmed by the presence of band inversion, the derived effective Z2 invariant and the non-trivial surface states with the presence of Dirac cones. Interestingly, our calculations further demonstrated that NaBi exhibits the uniquely combined properties between the electron-phonon coupling superconductivity in nice agreement with recent experimental measurements and the obviously anisotropic but extremely low thermal conductivity. The spin-orbit coupling effects greatly affect those properties. NaBi may provide a rich platform to study the relationship among metal, topology, superconductivity and thermal conductivity.

Thermal Conductivity of Diamond/SiC Nano-Polycrystalline Composites and Phonon Scattering at Interfaces.

Project description:To compare the thermal properties of heterogeneous and homogeneous interfaces, polycrystalline composites are proposed. Thermal properties of heterogeneous and homogeneous interfaces in the composites are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that when the inflow of heat arises from the same material, phonon scattering at heterogeneous interfaces is stronger than that at homogeneous interfaces. The phonon wave packet simulations indicate that the stronger phonon scattering at heterogeneous interfaces is caused by the combined actions of transmission coefficients and transmission time.

How Hydrodynamic Phonon Transport Determines the Convergence of Thermal Conductivity in Two-Dimensional Materials.

Project description:The phonon Boltzmann transport equation combined with first-principles calculation has achieved great success in exploring the lattice thermal conductivity (κ) of various materials. However, the convergence of the predicted κ is a critical issue, leading to quite scattered results recorded in the literature, even for the same material. In this paper, we explore the origin for the convergence of thermal conductivity in two-dimensional (2D) materials. Two kinds of typical 2D materials, graphene and silicene, are studied, and the bulk silicon is also compared as a control system for a three-dimensional material. The effect of the cutoff radius (rc) in the third-order interatomic force constants on κ is studied for these three materials. It is found that that κ of these three materials exhibits diverse convergence behaviors with respect to rc, which coincides very well with the strength of hydrodynamic phonon transport. By further analyzing the phonon lifetime and scattering rates, we reveal that the dominance of the normal scattering process gives rise to the hydrodynamic phonon transport in both graphene and silicene, which results in long-range interaction and a large lifetime of low-frequency flexural acoustic phonons, while the same phenomenon is absent in bulk silicon. Our study highlights the importance of long-range interaction associated with hydrodynamic phonon transport in determining the thermal conductivity of 2D materials.
