Project description:In this study, we tested the validity across two scales addressing conspiratorial thinking that may influence behaviours related to public health and the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the COVIDiSTRESSII Global Survey data from 12 261 participants, we validated the 4-item Conspiratorial Thinking Scale and 3-item Anti-Expert Sentiment Scale across 24 languages and dialects that were used by at least 100 participants per language. We employed confirmatory factor analysis, measurement invariance test and measurement alignment for internal consistency testing. To test convergent validity of the two scales, we assessed correlations with trust in seven agents related to government, science and public health. Although scalar invariance was not achieved when measurement invariance test was conducted initially, we found that both scales can be employed in further international studies with measurement alignment. Moreover, both conspiratorial thinking and anti-expert sentiments were significantly and negatively correlated with trust in all agents. Findings from this study provide supporting evidence for the validity of both scales across 24 languages for future large-scale international research.

Project description:The international scope of the 2020 COVID-19 crisis compelled a response from world leaders across the globe. However, the nature of these responses was far from universal. These circumstances present a unique opportunity to study how leader style influences, and is influenced by, a common crisis. To explore these relationships, the present effort used a content analysis of weekly COVID-19 statements from world leaders spanning the first 19 weeks of the crisis. Results suggest that leaders shifted toward increasingly pragmatic sensemaking approaches as COVID-19 infections increased and that sustained use of pragmatic leadership styles was associated with fewer infections in the long term. In contrast, sustained use of the charismatic sensemaking style was associated with higher observed infection rates.

Project description:ObjectiveTo understand what longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) participants found meaningful and valuable about their experiences while grounded in a communicated narrative sensemaking (CNSM) framework.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with a cohort of 3 LIC students and 7 of their 12 preceptors. Interviews were designed to elicit narratives ie time-ordered accounts of events, experiences, or reflections. Narratives were identified and coded to understand aspects of experiences.ResultsParticipants made sense of their experiences by narrating stories of LIC length allowing relationships to grow over time in a way that gave students a holistic perspective on patient care, built deep relationships between students and preceptors, and grew student confidence.ConclusionParticipants value longitudinal integration in LICs because it allows for unique perspectives on patient care and builds deep meaningful mentor relationships with preceptors. Relationships in LICs must be managed carefully because much LIC learning is facilitated by relationships. The clerkship is a crucial aspect of medical education of which sense will be made by physicians during their whole lives.

Project description:This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurses in Wuhan Hospital as front-line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A descriptive qualitative study of such nurses was conducted from a tertiary hospital in Wuhan. Semi-structured individual interviews were undertaken with 8 registered nurses who were front-line health workers in one of the COVID-19 wards and 3 nursing managers from the response team. Five discrete themes were identified from the narratives of nurses' experiences during the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan: "content of fundamental care," "teamwork," "reciprocity," "nurses' own worries," and "lifelong learning and insights." Nurses in the front line of care during the COVID-19 pandemic can contribute important information from their hands-on experience for providing a holistic response to an infectious outbreak like COVID-19. The concerns nurses raised at both personal and professional levels have implications for nursing education and clinical practice settings, particularly in the time of a pandemic when nurses' well-being requires attention, and at the same time for considering organizational factors that enable nurses to provide care to patients with confidence. Hospital policies and nursing management need to be ready and adhere to flexible work planning systems and approaches during a pandemic.

Project description:Based on a qualitative semi-structured interview, this paper argues that pedagogical positions can be negotiated and adjusted once a policy is introduced and a safe space for negotiation is created. It is a case study where we cite evidence from a Saudi university that shows the change in teachers' assumptions and, consequently, the negotiation process they had gone through within their institution due to a sudden policy shift. The paper highlights the importance of policies and the surrounding circumstances when it comes to negotiating pedagogical beliefs. This paper challenges the long-established assumption that age and much experience make it difficult for teachers to adapt their face-to-face educational activities to online platforms. We argue that institutional policies play a crucial role in shaping and reshaping teachers' assumptions and practices when the following conditions are met: sound IT infrastructure, technological support, and continuous training.

Project description:Governments around the world struggled to formulate an effective response to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, which was hampered by the widespread diffusion of various conspiracy theories about the virus. Local governments are often responsible for the implementing mitigation measures such as mask mandates and curfews but have received very limited attention in the scholarly literature. In this article, the authors use data from local policy actors in Colorado to evaluate the relationship between conspiratorial beliefs and perceptions of mitigation policy effectiveness. The authors find that many local policy actors hold conspiratorial beliefs, which combine with partisanship to contribute to lower perceptions of policy effectiveness. The authors conclude by discussing future research directions, noting that the broad adoption of conspiracy theories likely changes enforcement at the local scale.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic created an unprecedented global healthcare emergency prompting the exploration of new therapeutic avenues, including drug repurposing. A large number of ongoing studies revealed pervasive issues in clinical research, such as the lack of accessible and organised data. Moreover, current shortcomings in clinical studies highlighted the need for a multi-faceted approach to tackle this health crisis. Thus, we set out to explore and develop new strategies for drug repositioning by employing computational pharmacology, data mining, systems biology, and computational chemistry to advance shared efforts in identifying key targets, affected networks, and potential pharmaceutical intervention options. Our study revealed that formulating pharmacological strategies should rely on both therapeutic targets and their networks. We showed how data mining can reveal regulatory patterns, capture novel targets, alert about side-effects, and help identify new therapeutic avenues. We also highlighted the importance of the miRNA regulatory layer and how this information could be used to monitor disease progression or devise treatment strategies. Importantly, our work bridged the interactome with the chemical compound space to better understand the complex landscape of COVID-19 drugs. Machine and deep learning allowed us to showcase limitations in current chemical libraries for COVID-19 suggesting that both in silico and experimental analyses should be combined to retrieve therapeutically valuable compounds. Based on the gathered data, we strongly advocate for taking this opportunity to establish robust practices for treating today's and future infectious diseases by preparing solid analytical frameworks.
