Oscillating syngas production on NiO/YSZ catalyst from methane oxidation.

ABSTRACT: Synthesis gas was produced by methane oxidation on a NiO/YSZ cermet by interrupting the oxygen flow. Stopping the oxygen flow provoked the diffusion of lattice oxygen in the cermet, which in turn replenished the Ni-O bond that was consumed by methane. Resuming the oxygen flow brought about the activation of oxygen on the extrinsic vacancy site of YSZ. The activation, followed by the diffusion of oxygen and a Ni/NiO redox cycle, led to oscillatory syngas production. The infrared and mass spectroscopy results provide the reaction mechanism that governs the oxidation of methane on the NiO/YSZ cermet. This study presents a technique that can be applied to the catalysis of other metal/anion or cation conductor systems.

Zeolite-supported ultra-small nickel as catalyst for selective oxidation of methane to syngas

Project description:The development of simple catalysts with high performance in the selective oxidation of methane to syngas at low temperature has attracted much attention. Here we report a nickel-based solid catalyst for the oxidation of methane, synthesised by a facile impregnation method. Highly dispersed ultra-small NiO particles of 1.6 nm in size are successfully formed on the MOR-type zeolite. The zeolite–supported nickel catalyst gives continuously 97–98% methane conversion, 91–92% of CO yield with a H2/CO ratio of 2.0, and high durability without serious carbon deposition onto the catalyst at 973 K. DFT calculations demonstrate the effect of NiO particle size on the C-H dissociation process of CH4. A decrease in the NiO particle size enhances the production of oxygen originating from the NiO nanoparticles, which contributes to the oxidation of methane under a reductive environment, effectively producing syngas. Catalytic oxidation of methane to syngas is an important process, but efficient and stable catalyts remain in demand. Here dispersion of nickel on zeolites yields nickel oxide nanoparticles as small as 1.6 nm which act as selective and efficient catalysts for conversion of methane to syngas.

Effect of strontium on the performance of Ni/CBV20A catalyst in partial oxidation of methane for syngas and hydrogen production.

Project description:Converting methane into syngas via partial oxidation of methane (POM) is a promising energy-efficient technology given its exothermic nature. Active nickel-based catalysts suffer from deactivation by carbon deposition and sintering. This study explores the novel use of mordenite zeolite (CBV20A) as a catalytic support for nickel (Ni) and using strontium (Sr) as a promoter. Ni5Sr x /CBV20A samples with various Sr loadings were prepared and characterized using N2-sorption, X-ray diffraction, H2-temperature programmed reduction, temperature programmed desorption of CO2, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Sr addition improved NiO reducibility at lower temperature and boosted basicity, enhancing CH4 conversion and H2 yield. The optimal catalyst, Ni5Sr2/CBV20A, exhibited the highest performance with 72% CH4 conversion, 47% H2 yield, and 2.6 H2/CO ratio at 700 °C and 14 400 mL g-1 h-1. Results show that at a high gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 72 000 mL g-1 h-1, a combustion and reforming reaction mechanism is preferred, while at a low GHSV of 14 400 mL g-1 h-1, a direct partial oxidation mechanism predominates.

Syngas production by bi-reforming methane on an Ni-K-promoted catalyst using hydrotalcites and filamentous carbon as a support material.

Project description:Steam reforming of methane (SRM) and dry reforming of methane (DRM) are frequently used in the production of syngas; however, the bi-reforming of methane (BRM) is an interesting and alternative process. In this study, BRM was studied over MgO, a layered double hydroxide (LDH) phase that was destroyed between 600 °C and 900 °C during the reaction. It showed good sorption capacity for CO2 at relatively low temperatures (<500 °C), with CO2 adsorption being a pre-requisite for its catalytic conversion. Among the tested materials, the potassium-promoted LDH showed the highest activity, achieving a maximum CO2 conversion of 75%. The results suggest that at high temperature, the electronic structure of the used materials influences the destabilization of the feed in the order of methane, water and carbon dioxide. K promotes the catalytic activity, compensates the presence of large Ni particle sizes originating from the high metal loading, and favors the formation of Mg-Al-spinel. K is known to be an electronic promoter that releases electrons, which flow to the active metal. This electron flow induces instability on the molecule to be converted, and most probably, also induces size variations on the respective active nickel metal. The influence of the operating conditions in the range of 300 °C to 900 °C on the conversion of the reactants and product distribution was studied. Accordingly, it was concluded that it is only possible to obtain molar ratios of hydrogen-to-carbon monoxide close to two at high temperatures, a pre-requisite for the synthesis of methanol.

A novel study of methane-rich gas reforming to syngas and its kinetics over semicoke catalyst.

Project description:A small-size gasification unit is improved through process optimization to simulate industrial United Gas Improvement Company gasification. It finds that the reaction temperature has important impacts on semicoke catalyzed methane gas mixture. The addition of water vapor can enhance the catalytic activity of reforming, which is due to the fact that addition of water vapor not only removes carbon deposit produced in the reforming and gasification reaction processes, but also participates in gasification reaction with semicoke to generate some active oxygen-containing functional groups. The active oxygen-containing functional groups provide active sites for carbon dioxide reforming of methane, promoting the reforming reaction. It also finds that the addition of different proportions of methane-rich gas can yield synthesis gas with different H2/CO ratio. The kinetics study shows that the semicoke can reduce the activation energy of the reforming reaction and promote the occurrence of the reforming reaction. Epitaxially grown silicon-based single-atom catalyst for visible-light-driven syngas production.

Project description:Improving the dispersion of active sites simultaneous with the efficient harvest of photons is a key priority for photocatalysis. Crystalline silicon is abundant on Earth and has a suitable bandgap. However, silicon-based photocatalysts combined with metal elements has proved challenging due to silicon's rigid crystal structure and high formation energy. Here we report a solid-state chemistry that produces crystalline silicon with well-dispersed Co atoms. Isolated Co sites in silicon are obtained through the in-situ formation of CoSi2 intermediate nanodomains that function as seeds, leading to the production of Co-incorporating silicon nanocrystals at the CoSi2/Si epitaxial interface. As a result, cobalt-on-silicon single-atom catalysts achieve an external quantum efficiency of 10% for CO2-to-syngas conversion, with CO and H2 yields of 4.7 mol g(Co)-1 and 4.4 mol g(Co)-1, respectively. Moreover, the H2/CO ratio is tunable between 0.8 and 2. This photocatalyst also achieves a corresponding turnover number of 2 × 104 for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction over 6 h, which is over ten times higher than previously reported single-atom photocatalysts.

Subsurface A-site vacancy activates lattice oxygen in perovskite ferrites for methane anaerobic oxidation to syngas.

Project description:Tuning the oxygen activity in perovskite oxides (ABO3) is promising to surmount the trade-off between activity and selectivity in redox reactions. However, this remains challenging due to the limited understanding in its activation mechanism. Herein, we propose the discovery that generating subsurface A-site cation (Lasub.) vacancy beneath surface Fe-O layer greatly improved the oxygen activity in LaFeO3, rendering enhanced methane conversion that is 2.9-fold higher than stoichiometric LaFeO3 while maintaining high syngas selectivity of 98% in anaerobic oxidation. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that absence of Lasub.-O interaction lowered the electron density over oxygen and improved the oxygen mobility, which reduced the barrier for C-H bond cleavage and promoted the oxidation of C-atom, substantially boosting methane-to-syngas conversion. This discovery highlights the importance of A-site cations in modulating electronic state of oxygen, which is fundamentally different from the traditional scheme that mainly credits the redox activity to B-site cations and can pave a new avenue for designing prospective redox catalysts.

Water-promoted selective photocatalytic methane oxidation for methanol production.

Project description:Converting relatively inert methane into active chemical fuels such as methanol with high selectivity through an energy-saving strategy has remained a grand challenge. Photocatalytic technology consuming solar energy is an appealing alternative for methane reforming. However, the low efficiency and the undesirable formation of low-value products, such as carbon dioxide and ethane, limit the commercial application of photocatalytic technology. Herein, we find a facile and practical water-promoted pathway for photocatalytic methane reforming into methanol, enabling methanol production from methane and oxygen with a high selectivity (>93%) and production rate (21.4 μmol cm-2 h-1 or 45.5 mmol g-1 h-1) on metallic Ag nanoparticle-loaded InGaN nanowires (Ag/InGaN). The experimental XPS and theoretical PDOS analyses reveal that water molecules adsorbed on Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) can promote the electron transfer from InGaN to AgNPs, which enables the formation of partial Ag species with a lower oxidation state in AgNPs. Through the in situ IR spectrum and the reaction pathway simulation studies, these newly formed Ag species induced by water adsorption were demonstrated to be responsible for the highly selective methanol production due to the effective formation of a C-O bond and the optimal desorption of the formed methanol from the surface indium site of the InGaN photocatalyst. This unique water promotion effect leads to a 55-fold higher catalytic rate and 9-fold higher selectivity for methanol production compared to photocatalytic methane reforming without water addition. This finding offers a new pathway for achieving clean solar fuels by photocatalysis-based methane reforming.

Selective CO Production by Photoelectrochemical Methane Oxidation on TiO2.

Project description:The inertness of the C-H bond in CH4 poses significant challenges to selective CH4 oxidation, which often proceeds all the way to CO2 once activated. Selective oxidation of CH4 to high-value industrial chemicals such as CO or CH3OH remains a challenge. Presently, the main methods to activate CH4 oxidation include thermochemical, electrochemical, and photocatalytic reactions. Of them, photocatalytic reactions hold great promise for practical applications but have been poorly studied. Existing demonstrations of photocatalytic CH4 oxidation exhibit limited control over the product selectivity, with CO2 as the most common product. The yield of CO or other hydrocarbons is too low to be of any practical value. In this work, we show that highly selective production of CO by CH4 oxidation can be achieved by a photoelectrochemical (PEC) approach. Under our experimental conditions, the highest yield for CO production was 81.9%. The substrate we used was TiO2 grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD), which features high concentrations of Ti3+ species. The selectivity toward CO was found to be highly sensitive to the substrate types, with significantly lower yield on P25 or commercial anatase TiO2 substrates. Moreover, our results revealed that the selectivity toward CO also depends on the applied potentials. Based on the experimental results, we proposed a reaction mechanism that involves synergistic effects by adjacent Ti sites on TiO2. Spectroscopic characterization and computational studies provide critical evidence to support the mechanism. Furthermore, the synergistic effect was found to parallel heterogeneous CO2 reduction mechanisms. Our results not only present a new route to selective CH4 oxidation, but also highlight the importance of mechanistic understandings in advancing heterogeneous catalysis.

Observation of induction period and oxygenated intermediates in methane oxidation over Pt catalyst.

Project description:Selective oxidation of methane is one of the most attractive routes for methane to chemicals. However, mechanistic understanding and avoiding over-oxidation have great challenges because of its very rapid reaction rate. Herein, a capillary micro-reaction system was introduced to monitor the initial stage of methane oxidation over platinum. For the first time, an induction period is observed, during which oxygenated intermediates, such as methanol, acetone, methyl methoxy acetate, etc., are detected. Induction period can be shortened by methane pretreatment at 600°C, which generates highly active species containing unsaturated bonds. Combined these findings and observations of in situ characterizations, the evolution route of methane oxidation over Pt is prosed, i.e., the reaction starts from the formation of initial species containing Pt-C bond, followed by the generation of oxygenated intermediates, and ended with the over-oxidation of the intermediates to CO/CO2.
