Thermal conductivity of hexagonal BC₂P - a first-principles study.

ABSTRACT: In this work, we report a high thermal conductivity (k) of 162 W m^-1 K^-1 and 52 W m^-1 K^-1 at room temperature, along the directions perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis, respectively, of bulk hexagonal BC₂P (h-BC₂P), using first-principles calculations. We systematically investigate elastic constants, phonon group velocities, phonon linewidths and mode thermal conductivity contributions of transverse acoustic (TA), longitudinal acoustic (LA) and optical phonons. Interestingly, optical phonons are found to make a large contribution of 30.1% to the overall k along a direction perpendicular to the c-axis at 300 K. BC₂P is also found to exhibit high thermal conductivity at nanometer length scales. At 300 K, a high k value of ∼47 W m^-1 K^-1 is computed for h-BC₂P at a nanometer length scale of 50 nm, providing avenues for achieving efficient nanoscale heat transfer.

Lattice Thermal Conductivity of MgSiO3 Perovskite from First Principles.

Project description:We investigate lattice thermal conductivity κ of MgSiO3 perovskite (pv) by ab initio lattice dynamics calculations combined with exact solution of linearized phonon Boltzmann equation. At room temperature, κ of pristine MgSiO3 pv is found to be 10.7 W/(m · K) at 0 GPa. It increases linearly with pressure and reaches 59.2 W/(m · K) at 100 GPa. These values are close to multi-anvil press measurements whereas about twice as large as those from diamond anvil cell experiments. The increase of k with pressure is attributed to the squeeze of weighted phase-spaces phonons get emitted or absorbed. Moreover, we find κ exhibits noticeable anisotropy, with κ zz being the largest component and [Formula: see text] being about 25%. Such extent of anisotropy is comparable to those of upper mantle minerals such as olivine and enstatite. By analyzing phonon mean free paths and lifetimes, we further show that the weak temperature dependence of κ observed in experiments should not be caused by phonons reaching 'minimum' mean free paths. These results clarify the microscopic mechanism of thermal transport in MgSiO3 pv, and provide reference data for understanding heat conduction in the Earth's deep interior.

Lattice Thermal Conductivity of Mg3(Bi,Sb)2 Nanocomposites: A First-Principles Study.

Project description:Mg3(BixSb1-x)2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanocomposites are a highly appealing class of thermoelectric materials that hold great potential for solid-state cooling applications. Tuning of the lattice thermal conductivity is crucial for improving the thermoelectric properties of these materials. Hereby, we investigated the lattice thermal conductivity of Mg3(BixSb1-x)2 nanocomposites with varying Bi content (x = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) using first-principles calculations. This study reveals that the lattice thermal conductivity follows a classical inverse temperature-dependent relationship. There is a significant decrease in the lattice thermal conductivity when the Bi content increases from 0 to 0.25 or decreases from 1.0 to 0.75 at 300 K. In contrast, when the Bi content increases from 0.25 to 0.75, the lattice thermal conductivity experiences a gradual decrease and reaches a plateau. For the nanohybrids (x = 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75), the distribution patterns of the phonon group velocity and phonon lifetime are similar, with consistent distribution intervals. Consequently, the change in lattice thermal conductivity is not pronounced. However, the phonon group speed and phonon lifetime are generally lower compared to those of the pristine components with x = 0 and x = 1.0. Our results suggest that the lattice thermal conductivity is sensitive to impurities but not to concentrations. This research provides valuable theoretical insights for adjusting the lattice thermal conductivity of Mg3(BixSb1-x)2 nanocomposites.

Insights into the thermal conductivity of MOF-5 from first principles.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively studied in many fields due to their abundant porous structures. The mechanism underlying the thermal conduction properties of MOFs, which plays an essential role in a wide variety of applications such as adsorbents and thermoelectric devices, remains elusive. It is also highly desirable to achieve the efficient modulation of thermal conductivity in MOFs via experimentally accessible methods such as metal substitution and strain engineering. In this work, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate the thermal transport properties of MOF-5, a representative prototype of MOFs. We find an ultralow thermal conductivity (κ) of 0.33 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature, in excellent agreement with the experimental measurement. Such ultralow κ is attributed to the strong phonon-phonon scattering that arises from the dense and intertwined low-frequency phonons. The phonon dispersion leads to unusual tuning strategies of κ, since conventional designing guidelines (e.g. substitution of heavier atoms or application of tensile strain is preferred in pursuit of lower thermal conductivity) are not fully obeyed in MOF-5. We find that isovalent substitutions of Zn atoms with (lighter) Mg and (heavier) Cd atoms both result in significant reduction of κ, due to the enhanced phonon scattering rates that are associated with the stronger bond strength and the larger atomic mass, respectively. We further demonstrate that the so-called "guitar string" vibrations are responsible for the anomalous non-monotonic variation of κ in MOF-5 under tensile strain. This work provides fundamental insights into the thermal transport mechanisms in MOF-5, which may have some important implications for the thermal management applications utilizing MOFs.

First-Principles Determination of Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of monolayer WSe2.

Project description:By using first-principles calculations combined with the phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we systematically investigate the phonon transport of monolayer WSe2. Compared with other 2D materials, the monolayer WSe2 is found to have an ultralow thermal conductivity due to the ultralow Debye frequency and heavy atom mass. The room temperature thermal conductivity for a typical sample size of 1 μm is 3.935 W/m K, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of MoS2. And the room temperature thermal conductivity can be further decreased by about 95% in 10 nm sized samples. Moreover, we also find the ZA phonons have the dominant contribution to the thermal conductivity, and the relative contribution is almost 80% at room temperature, which is remarkably higher than that for monolayer MoS2. This is because the ZA phonons have longer lifetime than that of LA and TA phonons in monolayer WSe2.

Thermal conductivity of skutterudite CoSb3 from first principles: Substitution and nanoengineering effects.

Project description:CoSb3-based skutterudites are promising intermediate-temperature thermoelectric materials and fundamental understanding of the thermal transport in CoSb3 is crucial for further improving its performance. We herein calculate the lattice thermal conductivity κL of CoSb3 with first-principles methods and conduct a comprehensive analysis on phonon mode contribution, relaxation time and mean free path (MFP) distributions. The contribution of optical phonons is found to be significant (28% at 300 K) and important optical modes usually involve two or more pnicogen atoms moving synchronously. The MFP (~135 nm at 300 K) corresponding to 50% κL accumulation in CoSb3 is much larger than that predicted from the kinetic theory (~4 nm), providing an opportunity to reduce κL by nanoengineering. The effects of elemental substitution and nanoengineering on κL are therefore investigated. A 10% substitution of Sb by As results in 57% reduction of κL while the in-plane (cross-plane) κL of a 50-nm CoSb3 thin film is only 56% (33%) of the bulk κL at 300 K. The impurity scattering and boundary scattering mainly suppress phonons in different frequency regimes. By combining these two effects, κL can be reduced by more than 70% at 300 K, potentially leading to much improved ZT near room temperature.

Optic phonons and anisotropic thermal conductivity in hexagonal Ge2Sb2Te5.

Project description:The lattice thermal conductivity (κ) of hexagonal Ge2Sb2Te5 (h-GST) is studied via direct first-principles calculations. We find significant intrinsic anisotropy (κa/κc~2) of κ in bulk h-GST, with the dominant contribution to κ from optic phonons, ~75%. This is extremely unusual as the acoustic phonon modes are the majority heat carriers in typical semiconductors and insulators. The anisotropy derives from varying bonding along different crystal directions, specifically from weak interlayer bonding along the c-axis, which gives anisotropic phonon dispersions. The phonon spectrum of h-GST has very dispersive optic branches with higher group velocities along the a-axis as compared to flat optic bands along the c-axis. The large optic mode contributions to the thermal conductivity in low-κ h-GST is unusual, and development of fundamental physical understanding of these contributions may be critical to better understanding of thermal conduction in other complex layered materials.

Thermal Conductivity of Wurtzite Zinc-Oxide from First-Principles Lattice Dynamics--a Comparative Study with Gallium Nitride.

Project description:Wurtzite Zinc-Oxide (w-ZnO) is a wide bandgap semiconductor that holds promise in power electronics applications, where heat dissipation is of critical importance. However, large discrepancies exist in the literature on the thermal conductivity of w-ZnO. In this paper, we determine the thermal conductivity of w-ZnO using first-principles lattice dynamics and compare it to that of wurtzite Gallium-Nitride (w-GaN)--another important wide bandgap semiconductor with the same crystal structure and similar atomic masses as w-ZnO. However, the thermal conductivity values show large differences (400 W/mK of w-GaN vs. 50 W/mK of w-ZnO at room temperature). It is found that the much lower thermal conductivity of ZnO originates from the smaller phonon group velocities, larger three-phonon scattering phase space and larger anharmonicity. Compared to w-GaN, w-ZnO has a smaller frequency gap in phonon dispersion, which is responsible for the stronger anharmonic phonon scattering, and the weaker interatomic bonds in w-ZnO leads to smaller phonon group velocities. The thermal conductivity of w-ZnO also shows strong size effect with nano-sized grains or structures. The results from this work help identify the cause of large discrepancies in w-ZnO thermal conductivity and will provide in-depth understanding of phonon dynamics for the design of w-ZnO-based electronics.

Hydrogen Storage in Bilayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride: A First-Principles Study.

Project description:Using first-principles calculations, we report on the structural and electronic properties of bilayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), incorporating hydrogen (H2) molecules inside the cavity for potential H2-storage applications. Decrease in binding energies and desorption temperatures with an accompanying increase in the weight percentage (upto 4%) by increasing the H2 molecular concentration hints at the potential applicability of this study. Moreover, we highlight the role of different density functionals in understanding the decreasing energy gaps and effective carrier masses and the underlying phenomenon for molecular adsorption. Furthermore, energy barriers involving H2 diffusion across minimum-energy sites are also discussed. Our findings provide significant insights into the potential of using bilayer h-BN in hydrogen-based energy-storage applications.

Superior thermal conductivity in suspended bilayer hexagonal boron nitride.

Project description:We reported the basal-plane thermal conductivity in exfoliated bilayer hexagonal boron nitride h-BN that was measured using suspended prepatterned microstructures. The h-BN sample suitable for thermal measurements was fabricated by dry-transfer method, whose sample quality, due to less polymer residues on surfaces, is believed to be superior to that of PMMA-mediated samples. The measured room temperature thermal conductivity is around 484 Wm(-1)K(-1)(+141 Wm(-1)K(-1)/ -24 Wm(-1)K(-1)) which exceeds that in bulk h-BN, providing experimental observation of the thickness-dependent thermal conductivity in suspended few-layer h-BN.

First-principles prediction of high oxygen-ion conductivity in trilanthanide gallates Ln3GaO6.

Project description:We systematically investigated trilanthanide gallates (Ln3GaO6) with the space group Cmc21 as oxygen-ion conductors using first-principles calculations. Six Ln3GaO6 (Ln = Nd, Gd, Tb, Ho, Dy, or Er) are both energetically and dynamically stable among 15 Ln3GaO6 compounds, which is consistent with previous experimental studies reporting successful syntheses of single phases. La3GaO6 and Lu3GaO6 may be metastable despite a slightly higher energy than those of competing reference states, as phonon calculations predict them to be dynamically stable. The formation and the migration barrier energies of an oxygen vacancy (V O) suggest that eight Ln3GaO6 (Ln = La, Nd, Gd, Tb, Ho, Dy, Er, or Lu) can act as oxygen-ion conductors based on V O. Ga plays a role of decreasing the distances between the oxygen sites of Ln3GaO6 compared with those of Ln2O3 so that a V O migrates easier with a reduced migration barrier energy. Larger oxygen-ion diffusivities and lower migration barrier energies of V O for the eight Ln3GaO6 are obtained for smaller atomic numbers of Ln having larger radii of Ln3+. Their oxygen-ion conductivities at 1000 K are predicted to have a similar order of magnitude to that of yttria-stabilized zirconia.
