ABSTRACT:

Objective

The study was aimed to assess the home-based management practice of diarrhea and associated factors among caregivers in children under 5 years old at Ginchi town, Oromia region, West Ethiopia.

Methods

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 335 caregivers in Ginchi town. Data were collected using face-to-face interviewing questionnaires by using a systematic sampling technique. Data were entered into Epi-data version 3.5.1 and exported to statically software package for social science version 23.0 for analysis. Descriptive analyses were carried out. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were done to identify predictors of home-based management practice of diarrhea in children under 5 years old.

Result

The study had a total of 326 participants, with a 97.3% response rate. Accordingly, 193 (59%) have a good home-based management practice of diarrhea in children under the age of 5 years. Attended elementary school (adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval), 0.17 (0.06, 0.47)), high school education (adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval), 0.04 (0.013, 0.126)), monthly income in second class (adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval), 0.19 (0.04, 0.94)), and being mother in child relationship (adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval), 1.27 (1.4, 4.20)) were the identified predictors of home-based management practice of diarrhea in children under 5 years old.

Conclusion

More than half of the respondents have a good home-based management practice of diarrhea in children under 5 years old. Caregivers' educational status, being mothers of the child, and monthly income were the identified predictors. As a result, health education and awareness programs for caregivers on diarrhea control, proper use of oral rehydration solution, home-based fluid preparation, and diarrhea prevention are critical.

Project description:BackgroundTrachoma is a public health issue in more than 50 nations worldwide, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where hundreds of millions of people are considered blind. Ethiopia is projected to have 30% of the global active trachoma burden. The frequency of Trachoma Folliculitis in children aged 1 to 9 years old is 30% in the Oromia Region. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of active trachoma and associated variables among children aged 1 to 9 years old in Arsi Negele Town, West Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State, Southern Ethiopia, December 24-26, 2019.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Arsi Negele town community on December 24-26, 2019. A total of 178 study volunteers were recruited using a single population proportion formula and assigned to families in the town's three kebeles in proportion. A simple random selection procedure was used to choose study participants from the identified households. Madda Walabu University provided ethical approval, and different government structures provided letters of permission. Pre-tested structured questionnaires and binocular loupes X 2.5 were used to collect data from either mothers or fathers of eligible children for eye examination; torches with bottles of alcohol were used to gather data from either mothers or fathers of eligible children for eye examination. For analysis, data was entered into (IBM, SPSS) version 22. To assess factors associated with active trachoma, bivariate and multivariable logistic regressions were used. The crude and adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated to investigate the degree of association between the independent variables and active trachoma. Multivariate logistic regression was used to find connections between dependent and independent variables with a p≤ 0.05 confidence levels and a 95% confidence interval.ResultThe prevalence of active trachoma was determined to be 21.91% TF among 178 children aged 1 to 9 years. Flies on children's faces (AOR = 3.427; 95 percent CI: 1.432-8.171), unclean children's faces (AOR = 3.99; 95 percent CI: 1.427-11.158), face washing habits (AOR = 3.064; 95 percent CI: 1.273-7.373), and not using soap while face washing (AOR = 4.564; 95 percent CI 1.561-13.342) were found to be statistically significant associated factors with the prevalence of active trachoma.ConclusionThe prevalence of active trachoma was found to be relatively high. Face washing practices and the lack of soap use while washing faces were found as associated factors requiring optimal interventions to prevent trachoma infection among children aged 1-9 years in Arsi Negele town.

Project description:BackgroundStudents in school are more likely to be sick from communicable diseases like diarrheal illnesses, acute respiratory infections, and other illnesses linked to poor personal hygiene. Poor hygiene practices are common among school children and put their health at risk, which in turn has several consequences. These include significant school absences, transmission of infectious diseases to other students, and missed workdays for parents and guardians. However, there is limited evidence on the level of personal hygiene practice and its associated factors among school students. Thus, this study was aimed at determining personal hygiene practice level and its associated factors among elementary school grade (5-8) students in Fiche town, Oromia, Ethiopia, in 2022.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was conducted from April 29 to May 29, 2022, in Fiche town, Oromia regional state, among 534 elementary school students. A multi-stage probability sampling technique was used to select the individual students. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. The data was entered into epi-data version 4.6 and analyzed by SPSS version 26.0. Variables that scored a p-value less than 0.2 during bivariate analysis were included in multilevel logistic regression models to determine factors associated with personal hygiene practice. The odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval was estimated, and the level of significance was set at [Formula: see text] 0.05.ResultsThe magnitude of good personal hygiene (scored above the mean) was 59.2% (95% confidence interval (CI)) (55.1-63.0). A considerable proportion of students scored more than 50% in latrine use (62.5%), regular hand-washing (55.4%), and oral hygiene (55.20%) practices. Being female, having good personal hygiene knowledge, doing hygiene inspections at school, and having latrine accessibility was significantly associated with good personal hygiene among elementary school students.ConclusionConsiderable proportion of elementary school students in Fiche town have score poor personal hygiene practice. Interventions aimed that target improving knowledge of personal hygiene and hygiene inspection at school are crucial to enhance the personal hygiene among elementary school students.

Project description:BackgroundFood insecurity is the underlying cause of malnutrition. In addition, it is a condition where people lack consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active and healthy life. Recently, urban food insecurity has been on the top agenda in Ethiopia, as households prone to food insecurity are rising because of various factors. Hence, we aimed to assess the prevalence of food insecurity and associated factors among households in Waliso town, Oromia, Ethiopia.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study design was used from December 17, 2021, to January 16, 2022, among 397 randomly selected households in Waliso town. Study participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data collection was performed using a structured questionnaire, and data were entered using Epi Info 7 and exported to SPSS version 20 software for analysis. To identify factors associated with household food insecurity, multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were done. An adjusted odds ratio along with a 95% confidence interval were estimated to measure the strength of the association. In this study, the level of statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05.ResultsThe prevalence of household food insecurity was 63.4%, 95% CI (58.60%, 68.20%). Factors associated with household food insecurity were family sizes 6 + [AOR = 3.06, 95% CI: (1.35, 6.94)], dependents 1-2 [AOR = 2.62, 95% CI: (1.35, 5.10)], dependents 3 + [AOR = 3.07, 95% CI: (1.38, 7.40)], unemployed [AOR = 6.86, 95% CI: (2.76, 17.04)], self-employed [AOR = 3.27, 95% CI: (1.50, 7.14)], wage laborers [AOR = 13.01, 95% CI: (4.93, 34.38)], low wealth index [AOR = 4.08, 95% CI: (2.18, 7.64)], and a medium wealth index [AOR = 2.08, 95% CI: (1.18, 3.69)].ConclusionNearly two in three households were food insecure in Waliso Town. Large family sizes, a high dependency ratio, unemployment, low wage employment, and a low wealth index were significantly associated with food insecurity. Hence, the implementation of actions to improve household income and livelihoods, minimize dependency rates, by strengthen the use of family planning and encourage urban agriculture is vital to alleviate household food insecurity problems in the town.

Project description:A survey was undertaken from December 2017 to April 2018 to assess the biosecurity status of 44 commercial chicken farms established in Bishoftu town, Ethiopia, by interviewing farm owners using a structured questionnaire. The obtained data were summarized using frequency tables and analyzed with Pearson's chi-square test and Fischer's exact value using Stata 14 statistical software. From the assessed chicken farms, 31 (70.45%) were located within 0-50 m from the main road, 39 (88.64%) situated 500 m from the nearest farms, and 27 (61.36%) placed within 0-20 m from the residential areas. Forty-one (93.18%) participants disclosed that their employees did not receive training on biosecurity. From the assessed chicken farms, 30 (68.18%) had fences, 40 (90.91%) had footbaths at their gates, 31 (70.45%) prohibited visitors entrance, and 39 (88.64%) did not exchange equipment with other farms. In addition, 26 (59.09%) farms were easily accessed by wild birds, each of 42 (95.45%) farms purchased day-old chicks and feed, and 40 (90.91%) shared trucks with other farms as well. Among the assessed farms, only 2 (4.55%) had signages to restrict people's access, 9 (20.45%) had isolation rooms for diseased chickens, 14 (31.82%) disposed of dead birds properly, and 10 (22.73%) kept various types of records. Occupation (Fischer's exact value = 8.40; P=0.019), previous training (Fischer's exact value = 4.40; P=0.044), source of the premises (χ 2 = 5.50; P=0.019), and farm capacity (Fischer's exact value = 13.50; P=0.002) were found statistically significantly associated with the farm biosecurity status. The farm biosecurity status was found to be good in farms that were run by civil servants, had trained employees, are owned premises, and were of large and medium scales. In conclusion, the higher poor biosecurity status on chicken farms calls for the implementation of good biosecurity practices in each farm as well as the provision of training to the farm owners and their employees.

Project description:IntroductionMost households in low- and middle-income countries still cook using solid fuels in poorly ventilated dwellings. Indoor air pollution causes various health problems, like pneumonia, lung cancer, stillbirth, low birth weight, impaired cognitive development, and cataracts. Nevertheless, a few evidences are available in Africa, including Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of indoor air pollution prevention practices and associated factors among household mothers in Olenchiti town, Oromia, Ethiopia.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Four hundred twenty mothers were randomly selected by systematic random sampling. Data was collected through an interview and observation checklist. The collected data entered into Epi-Info version 7.2.5 was cleaned, edited, and then exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the findings. Binary logistic regression was computed to analyze the effect of each variable on the outcome variable. Model adequacy fitness was checked with the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. The multicollinearity of independent variables was checked with the variance inflation factor. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and P -value <0.05 was used as cutoff points to declare significance in the final model.ResultsThe overall good practices of mothers towards the prevention of indoor air pollution was 188 (45.0%). Mothers who had under-five children (AOR = 0.49, 95%CI (0.31-0.76), mothers in grade 9-12 (AOR = 0.51, 95%CI (0.28-0.92)) were significantly associated with indoor air pollution prevention practices.ConclusionThe overall good practices of mothers towards indoor air pollution were low compared to different findings. Under-five children and educational status were significantly associated with indoor air pollution prevention practices in the final model. Therefore, the high school curriculums should include indoor air pollution topics.

Project description:BackgroundFoodborne diseases (FBDs) are a major public health concern in both developed and developing countries, as they comprise a broad spectrum of diseases and account for a significant proportion of morbidities and mortalities worldwide. In Ethiopia, the food and drinking establishments contribute to the incidence of foodborne diseases often associated with outbreaks that end up threatening global public health security.ObjectiveTo assess sanitation and hygienic status and associated factors among food and drinking establishments in Burayu town, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study design with a systematic sampling technique was used. Data were collected from 257 food and drinking establishments' managers/owners using questionnaires and observational checklists. Data were entered by Epi data version 3.1 and exported to BIM SPSS version 21 for data analyses. Both descriptive and analytic statistics were employed. Statistical significance was considered at a P value less than 0.05 at a 95% confidence interval.ResultsThe study revealed that 47.9% of the food and drinking establishments were in poor sanitation and hygienic status. The study showed that male managers (AOR: 9.29, 95% CI: 2.97-21.14), managers less than 40 years old (AOR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.03-4.36), more than five years services (AOR: 3.66, 95% CI: 1.66-8.07), lack of clean basin (AOR: 2.92, 95% CI: 0.10-11.47), absence of liquid waste drainage system installations (AOR: 3.26, 95% CI: 0.12-0.62) were significantly associated with poor sanitation and hygienic status of food and drinking establishments.Conclusion and recommendationThe findings indicated that high prevalence of poor sanitation and hygienic status of the food and drinking establishments. Therefore, the establishments should avail waste drainage system, clean basin, renew the establishment providing the service for many years and encourage female empowerment to fulfill and maintain sanitation and hygienic status of their establishments.

Project description:IntroductionAbnormal uterine bleeding is any bleeding that deviates from normal menstruations. It differs in terms of frequency of bleeding, duration, and the pattern of bleeding during menstrual cycle or menopause. It is a major gynecological problem for medical visits among women in the reproductive aged group. However, data on abnormal uterine bleeding in Ethiopia are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the abnormal uterine bleeding and associated factors among reproductive age women in Jimma town, Southwest Ethiopia.MethodsCommunity-based cross-sectional study was employed from 1 January to 30 April 2020. Six hundred sixty women were selected by using systematic random sampling. Data were collected by using semi-structured questionnaires. Data were entered into EPI data version 3.1 and analyzed by using SPSS version 25 software. All predictor's variables with p value <0.25 in bivariable analysis were entered into multivariable logistic regression analysis. Variables with a p value of less than 0.05 in the multivariable analysis were taken as statistically significant predictors of abnormal uterine bleeding.ResultsOut of 660 participants, 225 (34.1%) had abnormal uterine bleeding. From women with abnormal uterine bleeding, the prevalence of metrorrhagia, heavy periods, oligomenorrhea, inter-menstrual bleeding, polymenorrhea, and amenorrhea was 59 (26.2%), 54 (24%), 53 (23.5%), 46 (20.4%), 35 (15.5%), and 25 (11.1%), respectively. History of abortion (adjusted odds ratio = 1.5, 95% confidence interval: 1.02-2.41), history of uterine fibroids (adjusted odds ratio = 3.83, 95% confidence interval: 1.85-7.94), history of sexually transmitted infection (adjusted odds ratio = 2.2, 95% confidence interval: 1.33-3.66), and the history of intrauterine device (adjusted odds ratio = 2.1, 95% confidence interval: 1.39-2.97) were significantly associated with abnormal uterine bleeding.ConclusionThe prevalence of abnormal uterine bleeding was higher in Jimma town.
