A twinning bare bones particle swarm optimization algorithm.

ABSTRACT: A twinning bare bones particle swarm optimization(TBBPSO) algorithm is proposed in this paper. The TBBPSO is combined by two operators, the twins grouping operator (TGO) and the merger operator (MO). The TGO aims at the reorganization of the particle swarm. Two particles will form as a twin and influence each other in subsequent iterations. In a twin, one particle is designed to do the global search while the other one is designed to do the local search. The MO aims at merging the twins and enhancing the search ability of the main group. Two operators work together to enhance the local minimum escaping ability of proposed methods. In addition, no parameter adjustment is needed in TBBPSO, which means TBBPSO can solve different types of optimization problems without previous information or parameter adjustment. In the benchmark functions test, the CEC2014 benchmark functions are used. Experimental results prove that proposed methods can present high precision results for various types of optimization problems.

Improved multi-objective clustering algorithm using particle swarm optimization.

Project description:Multi-objective clustering has received widespread attention recently, as it can obtain more accurate and reasonable solution. In this paper, an improved multi-objective clustering framework using particle swarm optimization (IMCPSO) is proposed. Firstly, a novel particle representation for clustering problem is designed to help PSO search clustering solutions in continuous space. Secondly, the distribution of Pareto set is analyzed. The analysis results are applied to the leader selection strategy, and make algorithm avoid trapping in local optimum. Moreover, a clustering solution-improved method is proposed, which can increase the efficiency in searching clustering solution greatly. In the experiments, 28 datasets are used and nine state-of-the-art clustering algorithms are compared, the proposed method is superior to other approaches in the evaluation index ARI.

A particle swarm optimization-based algorithm for finding gapped motifs.

Project description:BackgroundIdentifying approximately repeated patterns, or motifs, in DNA sequences from a set of co-regulated genes is an important step towards deciphering the complex gene regulatory networks and understanding gene functions.ResultsIn this work, we develop a novel motif finding algorithm (PSO+) using a population-based stochastic optimization technique called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), which has been shown to be effective in optimizing difficult multidimensional problems in continuous domains. We propose a modification of the standard PSO algorithm to handle discrete values, such as characters in DNA sequences. The algorithm provides several features. First, we use both consensus and position-specific weight matrix representations in our algorithm, taking advantage of the efficiency of the former and the accuracy of the latter. Furthermore, many real motifs contain gaps, but the existing methods usually ignore them or assume a user know their exact locations and lengths, which is usually impractical for real applications. In comparison, our method models gaps explicitly, and provides an easy solution to find gapped motifs without any detailed knowledge of gaps. Our method allows the presence of input sequences containing zero or multiple binding sites.ConclusionExperimental results on synthetic challenge problems as well as real biological sequences show that our method is both more efficient and more accurate than several existing algorithms, especially when gaps are present in the motifs.

A hybrid particle swarm optimization algorithm for solving engineering problem.

Project description:To overcome the disadvantages of premature convergence and easy trapping into local optimum solutions, this paper proposes an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm (named NDWPSO algorithm) based on multiple hybrid strategies. Firstly, the elite opposition-based learning method is utilized to initialize the particle position matrix. Secondly, the dynamic inertial weight parameters are given to improve the global search speed in the early iterative phase. Thirdly, a new local optimal jump-out strategy is proposed to overcome the "premature" problem. Finally, the algorithm applies the spiral shrinkage search strategy from the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and the Differential Evolution (DE) mutation strategy in the later iteration to accelerate the convergence speed. The NDWPSO is further compared with other 8 well-known nature-inspired algorithms (3 PSO variants and 5 other intelligent algorithms) on 23 benchmark test functions and three practical engineering problems. Simulation results prove that the NDWPSO algorithm obtains better results for all 49 sets of data than the other 3 PSO variants. Compared with 5 other intelligent algorithms, the NDWPSO obtains 69.2%, 84.6%, and 84.6% of the best results for the benchmark function ( f1-f13 ) with 3 kinds of dimensional spaces (Dim = 30,50,100) and 80% of the best optimal solutions for 10 fixed-multimodal benchmark functions. Also, the best design solutions are obtained by NDWPSO for all 3 classical practical engineering problems.

Multi/Many-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm Based on Competition Mechanism.

Project description:The recently proposed multiobjective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on competition mechanism algorithm cannot effectively deal with many-objective optimization problems, which is characterized by relatively poor convergence and diversity, and long computing runtime. In this paper, a novel multi/many-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on competition mechanism is proposed, which maintains population diversity by the maximum and minimum angle between ordinary and extreme individuals. And the recently proposed θ-dominance is adopted to further enhance the performance of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on the standard benchmark problems DTLZ, WFG, and UF1-9 and compared with the four recently proposed multiobjective particle swarm optimization algorithms and four state-of-the-art many-objective evolutionary optimization algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm has better convergence and diversity, and its performance is superior to other comparative algorithms on most test instances.

MPPT mechanism based on novel hybrid particle swarm optimization and salp swarm optimization algorithm for battery charging through simulink.

Project description:In this paper, a battery charging model is developed for solar PV system applications. As a means of photovoltaic power controlling system, buck-boost converter with a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) mechanism is developed in this paper for maximum efficiency. This paper proposed a novel combined technique of hybrid Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and Salp Swarm Optimization (SSO) models to perform Maximum Power Point Tracking mechanisms and obtain a higher efficiency for battery charging. In order to retrieve the maximum power from the PV array, the Maximum Power Point Tracking mechanism is observed which reaches the maximum efficiency and the maximum power is fed through the buck-boost converter into the load. The buck-boost converter steps up the voltage to essential magnitude. The energy drawn from the PV array is used for the battery charging by means of an isolated buck converter since the buck-boost converter is not directly connected to the battery. The Fractional Order Proportional Integral Derivative (FOPID) controller handles the isolated buck converter and battery to enhance the efficiency obtained through the Maximum Power Point Tracking mechanism. The simulation results show higher steady efficiency by using the hybrid PSOSSO algorithm in all stages. The battery is charged without losing the efficiency obtained from the hybrid PSOSSO algorithm-based Maximum Power Point Tracking mechanism. The higher efficiency was obtained as 99.99% at Standard Test Conditions (STC) and 99.52% at PV partial shading conditions (PSCs) by using the new hybrid algorithm.

Particle Swarm Optimization and Salp Swarm Algorithm for the Segmentation of Diabetic Retinal Blood Vessel Images.

Project description:In recent years, the incidence of diabetes has been increasing year by year. Since most of the fundus lesions are located near blood vessels, the image information is complex, and the end vessels are difficult to identify. So, a new segmentation method of diabetic retinal vessel images based on particle swarm optimization and salp swarm algorithm is proposed. This paper uses a Gaussian filter to enhance the main blood vessels, and a top-bot hat transform is used to strengthen the end vessels. The preprocessing process is completed by combining and reconstructing the two images through a normalization operation. The improved particle swarm optimization and salp swarm algorithms perform multi-threshold segmentation on the preprocessed vessel images. The best fit value, Structural Similarity Index Measure, Peak Signal to Noise Rati, feature similarity index measure, sensitivity, accuracy, regional consistency, Dice coefficient, Jaccard similarity, and Shannon entropy are selected for comprehensive evaluation and analysis. The results showed that this paper's improved particle swarm-salp swarm algorithm for segmenting diabetic retinal blood vessel images is more efficient, and the threshold is better. The vascular segmentation method in this paper is applied in medical image processing, which improves the accuracy of medical image processing and reduces the computational effort.

An improved predator-prey particle swarm optimization algorithm for Nash equilibrium solution.

Project description:Focusing on the problem incurred during particle swarm optimization (PSO) that tends to fall into local optimization when solving Nash equilibrium solutions of games, as well as the problem of slow convergence when solving higher order game pay off matrices, this paper proposes an improved Predator-Prey particle swarm optimization (IPP-PSO) algorithm based on a Predator-Prey particle swarm optimization (PP-PSO) algorithm. First, the convergence of the algorithm is advanced by improving the distribution of the initial predator and prey. By improving the inertia weight of both predator and prey, the problem of "precocity" of the algorithm is improved. By improving the formula used to represent particle velocity, the problems of local optimizations and slowed convergence rates are solved. By increasing pathfinder weight, the diversity of the population is increased, and the global search ability of the algorithm is improved. Then, by solving the Nash equilibrium solution of both a zero-sum game and a non-zero-sum game, the convergence speed and global optimal performance of the original PSO, the PP-PSO and the IPP-PSO are compared. Simulation results demonstrated that the improved Predator-Prey algorithm is convergent and effective. The convergence speed of the IPP-PSO is significantly higher than that of the other two algorithms. In the simulation, the PSO does not converge to the global optimal solution, and PP-PSO approximately converges to the global optimal solution after about 40 iterations, while IPP-PSO approximately converges to the global optimal solution after about 20 iterations. Furthermore, the IPP-PSO is superior to the other two algorithms in terms of global optimization and accuracy.

A modified particle swarm optimization rat search algorithm and its engineering application.

Project description:Solar energy generation requires photovoltaic (PV) systems to be optimised, regulated, and simulated with efficiency. The performance of PV systems is greatly impacted by the fluctuation and occasionally restricted accessibility of model parameters, which makes it difficult to identify these characteristics over time. To extract the features of solar modules and build highly accurate models for PV system modelling, control, and optimisation, current-voltage data collecting is essential. To overcome these difficulties, the modified particle swarm optimization rat search algorithm is presented in this manuscript. The modified rat search algorithm is incorporated to increase the PSO algorithm's accuracy and efficiency, which leads to better outcomes. The RSA mechanism increases both the population's diversity and the quality of exploration. For triple diode model of both monocrystalline and polycrystalline, PSORSA has showed exceptional performance in comparison to other algorithm i.e. RMSE for monocrystalline is 3.21E-11 and for polycrystalline is 1.86E-11. Similar performance can be observed from the PSORSA for four diode model i.e. RMSE for monocrystalline is 4.14E-09 and for polycrystalline is 4.72E-09. The findings show that PSORSA outperforms the most advanced techniques in terms of output, accuracy, and dependability. As a result, PSORSA proves to be a trustworthy instrument for assessing solar cell and PV module data.

Swarming genetic algorithm: A nested fully coupled hybrid of genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization.

Project description:Particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithms are two classes of popular heuristic algorithms that are frequently used for solving complex multi-dimensional mathematical optimization problems, each one with its one advantages and shortcomings. Particle swarm optimization is known to favor exploitation over exploration, and as a result it often converges rapidly to local optima other than the global optimum. The genetic algorithm has the ability to overcome local extrema throughout the optimization process, but it often suffers from slow convergence rates. This paper proposes a new hybrid algorithm that nests particle swarm optimization operations in the genetic algorithm, providing the general population with the exploitation prowess of the genetic algorithm and a sub-population with the high exploitation capabilities of particle swarm optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through solutions of several continuous optimization problems, as well as discrete (traveling salesman) problems. It is found that the new hybrid algorithm provides a better balance between exploration and exploitation compared to both parent algorithms, as well as existing hybrid algorithms, achieving consistently accurate results with relatively small computational cost.

Optimization of carton recycling site selection using particle swarm optimization algorithm considering residents' recycling willingness.

Project description:With the development of the express delivery industry, how to increase the recycling rate of waste cartons has become a problem that needs to be solved. Recycling enterprises began to provide the new recycling mode, door-to-door recycling services, to residents with waste cartons. In this article, we constructed a site selection model for a carton recycling site with the aim of maximizing total profits. Considering the residents' recycling willingness and the government subsidy earned through the contribution to carbon emission reduction, this model achieves the task of site selection and unit price fixation for carton recycling. We used the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to solve the model and compared it with the genetic algorithm (GA) for validity testing. PSO algorithm was also used to carry out sensitivity analysis in this model. The proposed model and the results of the sensitivity analysis can be used for decision-making in recycling enterprises as well as for further research on waste recycling and reverse logistics.
