Phonon-phonon scattering selection rules and control: an application to nanofriction and thermal transport.

ABSTRACT: Phonon-phonon scattering processes are the crucial phenomena which account for phonon decay, thermal expansion, heat transfer, protein dynamics, spin relaxation and related quantities. In this work, we show how the symmetries of the system determine which scattering processes are allowed at any order of anharmonic approximation, irrespective of the chemical composition. We also discuss how to control the system symmetries to switch on and off any single scattering process. We apply the presented results to the study and control of nanoscale intrinsic friction and thermal transport in lamellar van der Waals transition metal dichalcogenides. Thanks to its general formulation, the presented framework expands the materials science tool set for the design of nanoengineered thermally-active materials, irrespective of the specific chemical composition and atomic topology.

Exposing the hidden influence of selection rules on phonon-phonon scattering by pressure and temperature tuning.

Project description:Selection rules act to restrict the intrinsic anharmonic interactions between phonons in all crystals. Yet their influence on phonon propagation is hidden in most materials and so, hard to interrogate experimentally. Using ab initio calculations, we show that the otherwise invisible impact of selection rules on three-phonon scattering can be exposed through anomalous signatures in the pressure (P) and temperature (T) dependence of the thermal conductivities, κ, of certain compounds. Boron phosphide reveals such underlying behavior through an exceptionally sharp initial rise in κ with increasing P, which may be the steepest of any material, and also a peak and decrease in κ at high P. These features are in stark contrast to the measured behavior for many solids, and they occur at experimentally accessible conditions. These findings give a deep understanding of phonon lifetimes and heat conduction in solids, and motivate experimental efforts to observe the predicted behavior.

Weak phonon scattering effect of twin boundaries on thermal transmission.

Project description:To study the effect of twin boundaries on thermal transmission, thermal conductivities of twinned diamond with different twin thicknesses have been studied by NEMD simulation. Results indicate that twin boundaries show a weak phonon scattering effect on thermal transmission, which is only caused by the additional twin boundaries' thermal resistance. Moreover, according to phonon kinetic theory, this weak phonon scattering effect of twin boundaries is mainly caused by a slightly reduced average group velocity.

Acoustic phonon lifetimes limit thermal transport in methylammonium lead iodide.

Project description:Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have become an important class of semiconductors for solar cells and other optoelectronic applications. Electron-phonon coupling plays a critical role in all optoelectronic devices, and although the lattice dynamics and phonon frequencies of HOIPs have been well studied, little attention has been given to phonon lifetimes. We report high-precision momentum-resolved measurements of acoustic phonon lifetimes in the hybrid perovskite methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI), using inelastic neutron spectroscopy to provide high-energy resolution and fully deuterated single crystals to reduce incoherent scattering from hydrogen. Our measurements reveal extremely short lifetimes on the order of picoseconds, corresponding to nanometer mean free paths and demonstrating that acoustic phonons are unable to dissipate heat efficiently. Lattice-dynamics calculations using ab initio third-order perturbation theory indicate that the short lifetimes stem from strong three-phonon interactions and a high density of low-energy optical phonon modes related to the degrees of freedom of the organic cation. Such short lifetimes have significant implications for electron-phonon coupling in MAPI and other HOIPs, with direct impacts on optoelectronic devices both in the cooling of hot carriers and in the transport and recombination of band edge carriers. These findings illustrate a fundamental difference between HOIPs and conventional photovoltaic semiconductors and demonstrate the importance of understanding lattice dynamics in the effort to develop metal halide perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Thermal Conductivity of Diamond/SiC Nano-Polycrystalline Composites and Phonon Scattering at Interfaces.

Project description:To compare the thermal properties of heterogeneous and homogeneous interfaces, polycrystalline composites are proposed. Thermal properties of heterogeneous and homogeneous interfaces in the composites are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that when the inflow of heat arises from the same material, phonon scattering at heterogeneous interfaces is stronger than that at homogeneous interfaces. The phonon wave packet simulations indicate that the stronger phonon scattering at heterogeneous interfaces is caused by the combined actions of transmission coefficients and transmission time.

Structural Dynamics, Phonon Spectra and Thermal Transport in the Silicon Clathrates.

Project description:The potential of thermoelectric power to reduce energy waste and mitigate climate change has led to renewed interest in "phonon-glass electron-crystal" materials, of which the inorganic clathrates are an archetypal example. In this work we present a detailed first-principles modelling study of the structural dynamics and thermal transport in bulk diamond Si and five framework structures, including the reported Si Clathrate I and II structures and the recently-synthesised oC24 phase, with a view to understanding the relationship between the structure, lattice dynamics, energetic stability and thermal transport. We predict the IR and Raman spectra, including ab initio linewidths, and identify spectral signatures that could be used to confirm the presence of the different phases in material samples. Comparison of the energetics, including the contribution of the phonons to the finite-temperature Helmholtz free energy, shows that the framework structures are metastable, with the energy differences to bulk Si dominated by differences in the lattice energy. Thermal-conductivity calculations within the single-mode relaxation-time approximation show that the framework structures have significantly lower κlatt than bulk Si, which we attribute quantitatively to differences in the phonon group velocities and lifetimes. The lifetimes vary considerably between systems, which can be largely accounted for by differences in the three-phonon interaction strengths. Notably, we predict a very low κlatt for the Clathrate-II structure, in line with previous experiments but contrary to other recent modelling studies, which motivates further exploration of this system.

Impact of Phonon Surface Scattering on Thermal Energy Distribution of Si and SiGe Nanowires.

Project description:Thermal transport in nanostructures has attracted considerable attention in the last decade but the precise effects of surfaces on heat conduction have remained unclear due to a limited accuracy in the treatment of phonon surface scattering phenomena. Here, we investigate the impact of phonon-surface scattering on the distribution of thermal energy across phonon wavelengths and mean free paths in Si and SiGe nanowires. We present a rigorous and accurate description of phonon scattering at surfaces and predict and analyse nanowire heat spectra for different diameters and surface conditions. We show that the decrease in the diameter and increased roughness and correlation lengths makes the heat phonon spectra significantly shift towards short wavelengths and mean free paths. We also investigate the emergence of phonon confinement effects for small diameter nanowires and different surface scattering properties. Computed results for bulk materials show excellent agreement with recent experimentally-based approaches that reconstruct the mean-free-path heat spectra. Our phonon surface scattering model allows for an accurate theoretical extraction of heat spectra in nanowires and contributes to elucidate the development of critical phonon transport modes such as phonon confinement and coherent interference effects.

Ultra-efficient and parameter-free computation of submicron thermal transport with phonon Boltzmann transport equation.

Project description:Understanding thermal transport at the submicron scale is crucial for engineering applications, especially in the thermal management of electronics and tailoring the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials. At the submicron scale, the macroscopic heat diffusion equation is no longer valid and the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) becomes the governing equation for thermal transport. However, previous thermal simulations based on the phonon BTE have two main limitations: relying on empirical parameters and prohibitive computational costs. Therefore, the phonon BTE is commonly used for qualitatively studying the non-Fourier thermal transport phenomena of toy problems. In this work, we demonstrate an ultra-efficient and parameter-free computational method of the phonon BTE to achieve quantitatively accurate thermal simulation for realistic materials and devices. By properly integrating the phonon properties from first-principles calculations, our method does not rely on empirical material properties input. It can be generally applicable for different materials and the predicted results can match well with experimental results. Moreover, by developing a suitable ensemble of advanced numerical algorithms, our method exhibits superior numerical efficiency. The full-scale (from ballistic to diffusive) thermal simulation of a 3-dimensional fin field-effect transistor with 13 million degrees of freedom, which is prohibitive for existing phonon BTE solvers even on supercomputers, can now be completed within two hours on a single personal computer. Our method makes it possible to achieve the predictive design of realistic nanostructures for the desired thermal conductivity. It also enables accurately resolving the temperature profiles at the transistor level, which helps in better understanding the self-heating effect of electronics.

Vibrational hierarchy leads to dual-phonon transport in low thermal conductivity crystals.

Project description:Many low-thermal-conductivity (?L) crystals show intriguing temperature (T) dependence of ?L: ?L???T-1 (crystal-like) at intermediate temperatures whereas weak T-dependence (glass-like) at high temperatures. It has been in debate whether thermal transport can still be described by phonons at the Ioffe-Regel limit. In this work, we propose that most phonons are still well defined for thermal transport, whereas they carry heat via dual channels: normal phonons described by the Boltzmann transport equation theory, and diffuson-like phonons described by the diffusion theory. Three physics-based criteria are incorporated into first-principles calculations to judge mode-by-mode between the two phonon channels. Case studies on La2Zr2O7 and Tl3VSe4 show that normal phonons dominate low temperatures while diffuson-like phonons dominate high temperatures. Our present dual-phonon theory enlightens the physics of hierarchical phonon transport as approaching the Ioffe-Regel limit and provides a numerical method that should be practically applicable to many materials with vibrational hierarchy.

Phonon Thermal Transport in Silicene/Graphene Heterobilayer Nanostructures: Effect of Interlayer Interactions.

Project description:Heterostructuring, as a promising route to optimize the physical properties of 2D materials, has attracted great attention from the academic community. In this paper, we investigated the room-temperature in-plane and cross-plane phonon thermal transport in silicene/graphene van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures using molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulation results demonstrated that heat current along the graphene layer is remarkably larger than that along the silicene layer, which suggests that graphene dominates the thermal transport in silicene/graphene heterostructures. The in-plane phonon thermal conductivity of the silicene/graphene heterostructures could be a compromise between monolayer graphene and monolayer silicene. Heterostructuring can remarkably reduce the in-plane thermal conductivity of the graphene layer but increase the in-plane thermal conductivity of the silicene layer in heterobilayers compared with the freestanding monolayer counterparts because of their different structures. We also simulated the interlayer interaction strength effect on the in-plane phonon thermal conductivity and cross-plane interfacial thermal resistance of silicene/graphene heterostructures. Total in-plane phonon thermal conductivity and interfacial thermal resistance both decrease with the increase in the interlayer interaction strength in the silicene/graphene heterobilayers. In addition, the calculated interfacial thermal resistance shows the effect of the thermal transport direction across the interface. This study provides a useful reference for the thermal management regulation of 2D vdW heterostructures.

Significant Reduction of Interfacial Thermal Resistance and Phonon Scattering in Graphene/Polyimide Thermally Conductive Composite Films for Thermal Management.

Project description:The developing flexible electronic equipment are greatly affected by the rapid accumulation of heat, which is urgent to be solved by thermally conductive polymer composite films. However, the interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) and the phonon scattering at the interfaces are the main bottlenecks limiting the rapid and efficient improvement of thermal conductivity coefficients (λ) of the polymer composite films. Moreover, few researches were focused on characterizing ITR and phonon scattering in thermally conductive polymer composite films. In this paper, graphene oxide (GO) was aminated (NH2-GO) and reduced (NH2-rGO), then NH2-rGO/polyimide (NH2-rGO/PI) thermally conductive composite films were fabricated. Raman spectroscopy was utilized to innovatively characterize phonon scattering and ITR at the interfaces in NH2-rGO/PI thermally conductive composite films, revealing the interfacial thermal conduction mechanism, proving that the amination optimized the interfaces between NH2-rGO and PI, reduced phonon scattering and ITR, and ultimately improved the interfacial thermal conduction. The in-plane λ (λ ||) and through-plane λ (λ ⊥) of 15 wt% NH2-rGO/PI thermally conductive composite films at room temperature were, respectively, 7.13 W/mK and 0.74 W/mK, 8.2 times λ || (0.87 W/mK) and 3.5 times λ ⊥ (0.21 W/mK) of pure PI film, also significantly higher than λ || (5.50 W/mK) and λ ⊥ (0.62 W/mK) of 15 wt% rGO/PI thermally conductive composite films. Calculation based on the effective medium theory model proved that ITR was reduced via the amination of rGO. Infrared thermal imaging and finite element simulation showed that NH2-rGO/PI thermally conductive composite films obtained excellent heat dissipation and efficient thermal management capabilities on the light-emitting diodes bulbs, 5G high-power chips, and other electronic equipment, which are easy to generate heat severely.
