Separation performance of p-tert-butyl(tetradecyloxy)calix[6]arene as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography.

ABSTRACT: This work presents the first example of the utilization of p-tert-butyl(tetradecyloxy)calix[6]arene (C6A-C10) as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separation. The statically coated C6A-C10 column showed a column efficiency of 3293 plates per m and had a nonpolar nature. Its selectivity and retention behaviour were investigated using a number of mixtures of diverse analytes and their isomers. As a result, the C6A-C10 column exhibited high resolving capability for aliphatic and aromatic analytes from apolar to polar nature, especially for positional, structural and cis-/trans-isomers. Moreover, the C6A-C10 column showed thermal stability up to 240 °C. In addition, it was applied for the determination of isomer impurities in real samples, proving its good potential for practical GC analysis.

Separation Performance of Capillary Gas Chromatography Based on Monohydroxycucurbit[7]Uril Incorporated Into Sol-Gels as the Stationary Phase.

Project description:A novel monohydroxycucurbit[7]uril-based stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography (GC) has been produced. For this, a capillary column coating was made using a sol-gel technique, incorporating synthesized monohydroxycucurbit[7]uril [(OH)Q[7]] and hydroxy-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (OH-PDMS) into the sol-gel network through hydrolysis and polycondensation and chemical sol-gel grafting to the inner wall of a fused-silica tube. The preparation method may produce a coating with greater integrity, which gives the prepared column a higher separation efficiency and better selectivity toward analytes than a reported stationary phase based on neat cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s). The prepared (OH)Q[7]/PDMS column had 3,225 theoretical plates per meter determined using naphthalene at 120°C and exhibited a weakly polar nature. The (OH)Q[7]/PDMS column has high resolution over a broad spectrum of analytes with symmetrical peak shapes and exhibited better separation performance than commercial capillary columns and reported columns based on neat Q[n]s that failed to resolve some critical analytes. Moreover, the column also showed good thermal stability up to 300°C and separation repeatability with relative standard deviation values in the range of 0.01-0.11% for intraday, 0.11-0.32% for interday and 0.29-0.58% for column-to-column. In addition, the energy effect on the retention of analytes on the (OH)Q[7]/PDMS stationary phase was investigated. The results indicated that retention on the column was determined mainly by the enthalpy change. As demonstrated, the proposed coating method can address some disadvantages that exist with the reported Q[n]s columns and combine the full advantages of (OH)Q[7] with the sol-gel coating method while achieving outstanding GC separation performance.

Project description:The title compound, C62H76O5, known to be one of the most versatile synthetic precursors/inter-mediates of calix[5]arene derivatives, adopts an approximate Cs -symmetric cone-in conformation. The aryl-oxybenzyl ring is tilted in such a way that the p-tert-butyl group fills the macrocycle cavity, while the benzyl group moves away from the cavity axis. In the crystal, this conformational arrangement is secured by intra- and inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds forming inversion dimers. Four tert-butyl groups are disordered over two orientations, with occupancy ratios of 0.745?(6):0.255?(6), 0.837?(5):0.163?(5), 0.850?(5):0.150?(5) and 0.845?(8):0.155?(8).

Project description:THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetra-propyn-yloxy-2,8,14,20-tetra-thia-calix[4]arene], C(52)H(56)O(4)S(4), is an alkyl-ated product bearing four propyne groups at the lower rim of a 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-tetrathia-calix[4]arene. The mol-ecule is located on a crystallographic twofold rotation axis, running through two S atoms and perpendicular to the long axis of the mol-ecule. The four propyne groups, located in an alternate fashion above and below the mean plane of the four S atoms, are almost parallel to the calixarene long axis. The dihedral angle between the two crystallographically independent benzene rings is 86.77?(14)°. Two tert-butyl groups are disordered over two positions with site occupancies of 0.59?(2) and 0.41?(2).

Their crystal packing is stabilized by C-H?? contacts involving the meth-oxy groups. The solvent mol-ecule is located inter-stitially between two calixarene units with C-H?Cl contacts to meth-oxy and tert-butyl groups. One tert-butyl residue of each calixarene mol-ecule is disordered over two positions (occupancies 0.60/0.40 and 0.63/0.37), resulting in bond distances that deviate from ideal values. The tetra-mer calixarene mol-ecules present models with approximate non-crystallographic C(s) symmetry.

Project description:The title compound, C(60)H(88)O(4)·4CHCl(3)·2H(2)O, is the alkyl-ated product of 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene. It adopts a distorted cone conformation which leads to an open cavity. All the phenolic rings are tilted so that their tert-butyl groups are pitched away from the calix cavity. Two opposite aromatic rings are close to being perpendicular to one another [dihedral angle 85.0?(2)°], while the other pair of opposite rings is almost parallel [dihedral angle 8.1?(2)°], and adjacent phenolic rings are almost perpendicular [dihedral angles 82.4?(1) or 87.9?(1)°]. In the crystal, the water molecule and calixarene interact by way of O-H?O hydrogen bonds.

Crystal structure of a supra-molecular lithium complex of p-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene.

Project description:Crystals of a supra-molecular lithium complex with a calix[4]arene derivative, namely tetra-methano-llithium 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,26,27-trihy-droxy-28-oxidocalix[4]arene methanol monosolvate, [Li(CH3OH)4](C44H55O4)·CH3OH or [Li(CH3OH)4]+·(calix[4]arene-)]·CH3OH (where calix[4]arene- represents a mono-anion species because of deprotonation of one H atom of the calixarene hy-droxy groups), were obtained from p-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene reacted with LiH in tetra-hydro-furan, followed by recrystallization from methanol. The asymmetric unit comprises one mono-anionic calixarene mol-ecule, one Li+ cation coordinated to four methanol mol-ecules, and one methanol mol-ecule included in the calixarene cavity. The calixarene mol-ecule maintains a cone conformation by intra-molecular hydrogen bonding between one phenoxide (-O-) and three pendent calixarene hy-droxy groups (-OH). The coordinated methanol mol-ecules around the metal cation play a significant role in forming the supra-molecular assembly. The crystal structure of this assembly is stabilized by three sets of inter-molecular inter-actions: (i) hydrogen bonds involving the -OH and -O- moieties of the calixarene mol-ecules, the -OH groups of the coordinated methanol mol-ecules, and the -OH group of the methanol mol-ecule included in the calixarene cavity; (ii) C-H?? inter-actions between the calixarene mol-ecules and/or the coordinated methanol mol-ecules; (iii) O-H?? inter-actions between the calixarene mol-ecule and the included methanol mol-ecule.

Nanostructured Silver Coating as a Stationary Phase for Capillary Gas Chromatography.

Project description:A capillary column coated with nanostructured silver coating was fabricated for gas chromatography. The nanostructured silver coating, about 80-120 nm in thickness, was prepared as the stationary phase via silver mirror reaction, and was characterized by SEM and EDS. The column was evaluated using different types of model analytes, including n-alkanes, n-alcohols, benzenes, and Grob mixture. A baseline separation of ten n-alkanes on the silver column (15 m × 0.20 mm i.d.) was achieved within 3.5 min through the main hydrophobic mechanism. A mixture of six n-alcohols, or another mixture containing three butanol isomers and two octanol isomers, was separated well on the column. The column separated some benzenes containing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, benzaldehyde, and benzyl alcohol. A Grob mixture containing seven analytes was also separated successfully. Based on a multiple retention mechanism such as hydrophobic, dipole-dipole, and dipole-induced dipole interactions, the silver column achieved a good separation of twelve different types of compounds within 2.5 min. The column presented satisfactory separation repeatability with relative standard deviation of retention time between 0.073% and 0.591%. The results indicate that the silver column is promising for gas chromatographic separation.

Project description:In the title compound, C(90)H(120)O(18)·2CH(3)CN, the calix[6]arene has a 1,2,3-alternate conformation and possesses inversion symmetry. It crystallizes as an acetonitrile disolvate, with a half-mol-ecule of calix[6]arene and one mol-ecule of solvent in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal, the two solvent mol-ecules are enclosed in voids between the calix[6]arene mol-ecules. They form weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving an O atom of the lower rim substituent. The cavity of the calix[6]arene itself is enclosed by two opposite phenol rings, which are turned into the cavity due to the presence of a C-H⋯π inter-action. The calix[6]arene mol-ecule exhibits disorder of one substituent on its lower rim [occupancy ratio 0.897 (3):0.103 (3)].

Project description:Mol-ecules of the title compound, C(56)H(76)Cl(4)O(16)S(4), have crystallographic C(2) symmetry and adopt a 1,3-alternate conformation where the four -OCH(2)CH(2)OCH(2)CH(2)Cl groups are located alternately above and below the virtual plane (R) defined by the four bridging S atoms. The dihedral angles between the plane (R) and the phenolic rings are 72.85?(7) and 74.57?(7)°. An unusual 24-membered macrocyclic ring is formed in the crystal structure with an array of eight intra-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds between the ether arm H atoms and the sulfonyl O atoms. In the supra-molecular structure, the mol-ecular components are linked into infinite zigzag one-dimensional chains by a combination of four inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming R(2) (2)(13), R(2) (2)(16), R(2) (2)(21) and R(2) (2)(26) ring motifs. These chains are augmented into a wave-like two-dimensional network by weak C?O inter-actions. One tert-butyl group shows rotational disorder, and one CH(2)CH(2)Cl group is disordered over two orientations; the site-occupation factors are 0.756?(6) and 0.244?(6) for the two tert-butyl groups, and 0.808?(3) and 0.192?(3) for the two CH(2)CH(2)Cl units.
