Enhanced oil removal from water in oil stable emulsions using electrospun nanocomposite fiber mats.

ABSTRACT: Fibrous mats with hydrophobic and oleophilic properties have been fabricated and used as absorbents of oil from stable water in oil emulsions. The mats were prepared by initially mixing two polymers, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polycaprolactone (PCL), in a common solvent. The subsequent electrospinning of the prepared solutions resulted in the production of mechanically stable fiber mats, with enhanced oil absorption capacity and oil absorption selectivity from the emulsions, compared to the pure PMMA or PCL mats. Furthermore, the formed fibrous substrates have been successful in the absorption of oil from different emulsions with a wide range of oil content, from 10 to 80 v%. The performance of the fibrous mats was optimized by the incorporation of hydrophobic silica nanoparticles, reaching oil absorption capacities of 28 g g^-1 and negligible water uptake, in the emulsions with 80 v% oil content.

Facile Oil Removal from Water-in-Oil Stable Emulsions Using PU Foams.

Project description:Superhydrophobic and oleophilic polyurethane foams were obtained by spray-coating their surfaces with solutions of thermoplastic polyurethane and hydrophobic silicon oxide nanoparticles. The developed functionalized foams were exploited as reusable oil absorbents from stable water-in-oil emulsions. These foams were able to remove oil efficiently from a wide range of emulsions with oil contents from 10 to 80 v.%, stabilized using Span80. The modified foams could reach oil absorption capacities up to 29 g/g, becoming a suitable candidate for water-in-oil stable emulsions separation.

Novel Electrospun Polylactic Acid Nanocomposite Fiber Mats with Hybrid Graphene Oxide and Nanohydroxyapatite Reinforcements Having Enhanced Biocompatibility.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) and a nanohydroxyapatite rod (nHA) of good biocompatibility were incorporated into polylactic acid (PLA) through electrospinning to form nanocomposite fiber scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. The preparation, morphological, mechanical and thermal properties, as well as biocompatibility of electrospun PLA scaffolds reinforced with GO and/or nHA were investigated. Electron microscopic examination and image analysis showed that GO and nHA nanofillers refine the diameter of electrospun PLA fibers. Differential scanning calorimetric tests showed that nHA facilitates the crystallization process of PLA, thereby acting as a nucleating site for the PLA molecules. Tensile test results indicated that the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the electrospun PLA mat can be increased by adding 15 wt % nHA. The hybrid nanocomposite scaffold with 15 wt % nHA and 1 wt % GO fillers exhibited higher tensile strength amongst the specimens investigated. Furthermore, nHA and GO nanofillers enhanced the water uptake of PLA. Cell cultivation, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and alkaline phosphatase tests demonstrated that all of the nanocomposite scaffolds exhibit higher biocompatibility than the pure PLA mat, particularly for the scaffold with 15 wt % nHA and 1 wt % GO. Therefore, the novel electrospun PLA nanocomposite scaffold with 15 wt % nHA and 1 wt % GO possessing a high tensile strength and modulus, as well as excellent cell proliferation is a potential biomaterial for bone tissue engineering applications.

Functionalized Cellulose Networks for Efficient Oil Removal from Oil⁻Water Emulsions.

Project description:The separation of oil from water in emulsions is a great environmental challenge, since oily wastewater is industrially produced. Here, we demonstrate a highly efficient method to separate oil from water in non-stabilized emulsions, using functionalized cellulose fiber networks. This is achieved by the modification of the wetting properties of the fibers, transforming them from oil- and water-absorbing to water-absorbing and oil-proof. In particular, two diverse layers of polymeric coatings, paraffin wax and poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-b-PEO) diblock copolymer, are applied on the surface of each individual fiber by a two-step dip adsorption process. The resulting cellulose networks exhibit superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity and they are mechanically reinforced. Therefore, the described treatment makes cellulose fiber networks excellent candidates for the filtration and subsequent removal of oil from oil-in-water non-stabilized emulsions with oil separation efficiency up to 99%. The good selectivity, reproducibility, and cost effectiveness of the preparation process leads to the production of low cost filters that can be used in oil⁻water separation applications.

Enhanced Differentiation of Human Preosteoblasts on Electrospun Blend Fiber Mats of Polydioxanone and Anionic Sulfated Polysaccharides.

Project description:The viability and differentiation of SaOS-2 preosteoblasts on fiber mats of blends comprising of the biodegradable poly(ester-ether) polydioxanone (PDX) and the sulfate-containing anionic polysaccharides kappa-carrageenan (KCG) and fucoidan (FUC) were investigated for a range of different blend compositions. The detailed analysis of the blend nanofiber properties revealed a different degree of miscibility of PDX and the polysaccharide leading to a different enrichment at the surface of the blend nanofibers, which were observed to be stable in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) for up to 5 weeks. The fibrous mats of PDX/FUC led to the highest osteogenic differentiation with very good cell viability. The electrospun blend fibers also supported human-induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells and iPS cell-derived embryoid bodies with high cell viability, which underlines the potential of these novel blend fiber systems for optimized performance in bone tissue engineering applications.

Physical and Antibacterial Properties of Peppermint Essential Oil Loaded Poly (?-caprolactone) (PCL) Electrospun Fiber Mats for Wound Healing.

Project description:The aim of this study was to fabricate and characterize various concentrations of peppermint essential oil (PEP) loaded on poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL) electrospun fiber mats for healing applications, where PEP was intended to impart antibacterial activity to the fibers. SEM images illustrated that the morphology of all electrospun fiber mats was smooth, uniform, and bead-free. The average fiber diameter was reduced by the addition of PEP from 1.6 ± 0.1 to 1.0 ± 0.2 ?m. Functional groups of the fibers were determined by Raman spectroscopy. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis demonstrated the actual PEP content in the samples. In vitro degradation was determined by measuring weight loss and their morphology change, showing that the electrospun fibers slightly degraded by the addition of PEP. The wettability of PCL and PEP loaded electrospun fiber mats was measured by determining contact angle and it was shown that wettability increased with the incorporation of PEP. The antimicrobial activity results revealed that PEP loaded PCL electrospun fiber mats exhibited inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (gram-negative) bacteria. In addition, an in-vitro cell viability assay using normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells revealed improved cell viability on PCL, PCLPEP1.5, PCLPEP3, and PCLGEL6 electrospun fiber mats compared to the control (CNT) after 48 h cell culture. Our findings showed for the first time PEP loaded PCL electrospun fiber mats with antibiotic-free antibacterial activity as promising candidates for wound healing applications.

A Comparison of Gelling Agents for Stable, Surfactant-Free Oil-in-Water Emulsions.

Project description:Emulsions have a range of applications, for example, in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food. However, the surfactants used to prepare such emulsions can often be toxic to humans and the environment and also affect the oil properties of emulsions. Therefore, interest in surfactant-free emulsions has increased in recent years. One method to enhance emulsion stability without a surfactant is to use a gelling agent to increase the viscosity. Gelling agents are viscous hydrocolloids that gel when dispersed in water, even at low concentrations. In this study, we prepared six oil-in-water emulsions (oil content 20%) with different gelling agents (xanthan gum, Carbopol 981, TR-2, and Ultrez 20) and investigated the effect of the gelling agent concentration. For each sample, particle size and emulsion stability analysis were performed at high temperatures to ensure the stability of the emulsions. We observed that the emulsion prepared using TR-2 (0.25 wt%) did not aggregate at high temperatures for one month. Based on our assessment of the stability of these emulsions under various conditions, we believe that the use of gelling agents for the preparation of surfactant-free emulsions shows great promise for applications requiring long-term stable emulsions, such as cosmetics and medicine.

Use of Bacterial Cellulose and Crosslinked Cellulose Nanofibers Membranes for Removal of Oil from Oil-in-Water Emulsions.

Project description:Abstract: Never-dried bacterial cellulose (BC) and crosslinked cellulose nanofibers (CNF) were used for the removal of oil from stabilized and non-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with droplet sizes less than 1 µm. The CNF membranes were exchanged with isopropyl alcohol before drying. The microscopic structure of the prepared membranes was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the water flux and the rejection of oil were evaluated using a dead-end filtration cell. BC harvested after different incubation time periods (2 to 10 days) did not show a change in the width of the nanofibers, but only the thickness of the membranes was increased. Pure water flux was not affected as a result of increasing thicknesses of BC membranes harvested after 4⁻10 days while BC harvested after two days had significantly higher water flux than the others. BC showed a higher flux and efficiency in removing oil from oil emulsions than CNF membranes. Removal of oil by the different membranes from the non-stabilized oil emulsion was more efficient than from the stabilized one.

Tailored CNTs Buckypaper Membranes for the Removal of Humic Acid and Separation of Oil-in-Water Emulsions.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a robust material and proven as a promising candidate for a wide range of electronic, optoelectronic and environmental applications. In this work, two different methods were utilized for the preparation of CNTs exhibiting different aspect ratios via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The as-prepared CNTs were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2adsorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy in order to investigate their morphological and structural properties. Free-standing CNTs "buckypaper" membranes were fabricated, characterized and tailored to meet the requirements of two applications, i.e., (1) the removal of humic acid (HA) from water and (2) separation of oil-in-water emulsions. It was revealed that the hydrophobic buckypapers showed high separation performance for Shell oil-in-water emulsions filtration, with up to 98% through the accumulation of oil droplets onto the membrane surface. The absorption capacity of buckypaper membranes for various organic liquids (oil, chloroform and toluene) was evaluated over 10 absorption cycles to investigate their recyclability and robustness. Moreover, surface modification was introduced to the pristine CNTs to increase their surface hydrophilicity and improve the pure water permeability of buckypapers. These modified buckypapers showed high flux for HA solutions and excellent HA rejection efficiency up to 95%via size exclusion and electrostatic repulsion mechanisms.

Electrospun silica nanofiber mats functionalized with ceria nanoparticles for water decontamination.

Project description:This study demonstrates the fabrication of nanoceria-immobilized silica nanofibers for efficient water decontamination with easy reuse and regeneration properties. Commercially-available ceria (CeO2) nanoparticles were immobilized on electrospun silica nanofiber mats. Optimal conditions for both oxidation of model trace organic compounds (TrOCs) and hydroxyl-radical formation were determined in batch experiments with ceria nanoparticles. Kinetic experiments showed comparable oxidation rates of positively- and neutrally-charged TrOCs (95 and 98%, respectively) by the nanofiber composites at pH 2 in 0.5 mM H2O2. We demonstrated the reuse properties of the ceria nanofiber composites, finding less than a 15% reduction in oxidation performance after 10 cycles. In addition to this oxidative performance, the electrospun CeO2 nanofiber composites are also applicable for adsorbing the persistent contaminant perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) through electrostatic interactions. Regeneration of the fibers was enabled through a one-hour heat treatment at 550 °C in air. Overall, results from this study show that the nanoceria-immobilized silica nanofibers can be used as efficient oxidative and adsorptive media to treat TrOCs in acidic waters, without use of an additional catalyst separation stage from solution.

Particles' Organization in Direct Oil-in-Water and Reverse Water-in-Oil Pickering Emulsions.

Project description:This paper addresses the impact of the particle initial wetting and the viscosity of the oil phase on the structure and rheological properties of direct (Oil/Water) and reverse (Water/Oil) Pickering emulsions. The emulsion structure was investigated via confocal microscopy and static light scattering. The flow and viscoelastic properties were probed by a stress-controlled rheometer. Partially hydrophobic silica particles have been employed at 1 and 4 wt.% to stabilize dodecane or paraffin-based emulsions at 20 vol.% of the dispersed phase. W/O emulsions were obtained when the particles were dispersed in the oily phase while O/W emulsions were prepared when the silica was introduced in the aqueous phase. We demonstrated that, although the particles adsorbed at the droplets interfaces for all the emulsions, their organization, the emulsion structure and their rheological properties depend in which phase they were previously dispersed in. We discuss these features as a function of the particle concentration and the oil viscosity.
