Acetone vapour-assisted growth of 2D single-crystalline organic lead halide perovskite microplates and their temperature-enhanced photoluminescence.

ABSTRACT: We adopt an acetone vapour-assisted method to grow high quality single-crystalline microplates of two-dimensional (2D) perovskite, 2-phenylethylammonium lead bromide [(C₆H₅C₂H₄NH₃)₂PbBr₄]. The microplates, converted from the spin-coated films, are well-defined rectangles. Temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy shows that the band gap PL is enhanced markedly with increasing temperature up to 218 K, accompanied by the quenching of the PL related to the trap states, which perhaps results from the exciton-phonon couplings. The optical phonon energy around 50 meV and the exciton binding energy around 120 meV are derived by fitting the band gap PL linewidths and intensities at different temperatures, respectively.

Microcarrier-Assisted Inorganic Shelling of Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:The conventional strategy of synthetic colloidal chemistry for bright and stable quantum dots has been the production of epitaxially matched core/shell heterostructures to mitigate the presence of deep trap states. This mindset has been shown to be incompatible with lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) due to their dynamic surface and low melting point. Nevertheless, enhancements to their chemical stability are still in great demand for the deployment of LHP NCs in light-emitting devices. Rather than contend with their attributes, we propose a method in which we can utilize their dynamic, ionic lattice and uniquely defect-tolerant band structure to prepare non-epitaxial salt-shelled heterostructures that are able to stabilize these materials against their environment, while maintaining their excellent optical properties and increasing scattering to improve out-coupling efficiency. To do so, anchored LHP NCs are first synthesized through the heterogeneous nucleation of LHPs onto the surface of microcrystalline carriers, such as alkali halides. This first step stabilizes the LHP NCs against further merging, and this allows them to be coated with an additional inorganic shell through the surface-mediated reaction of amphiphilic Na and Br precursors in apolar media. These inorganically shelled NC@carrier composites offer significantly improved chemical stability toward polar organic solvents, such as γ-butyrolactone, acetonitrile, N-methylpyrrolidone, and trimethylamine, demonstrate high thermal stability with photoluminescence intensity reversibly dropping by no more than 40% at temperatures up to 120 °C, and improve compatibility with various UV-curable resins. This mindset for LHP NCs creates opportunities for their successful integration into next-generation light-emitting devices.

Microwave-Assisted Preparation of Organo-Lead Halide Perovskite Single Crystals.

Project description:The efficiency of organo-lead halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices is dramatically lower for amorphous materials compared to highly crystalline ones. Therefore, it is challenging to optimize and scale up the production of large-sized single crystals of perovskite materials. Here, we describe a novel and original approach to preparing lead halide perovskite single crystals by applying microwave radiation during the crystallization. The microwave radiation primarily causes precise heating control in the whole volume and avoids temperature fluctuations. Moreover, this facile microwave-assisted method of preparation is highly reproducible and fully automated, it and can be applied for various different perovskite structures. In addition, this cost-effective method is expected to be easily scalable because of its versatility and low energy consumption. The crystallization process has low heat losses; therefore, only a low microwave reactor power of 8-15 W during the temperature changes and of less than 1 W during the temperature holding is needed.

Electric Field Induced Electrorotation of 2D Perovskite Microplates.

Project description:High precision-controlled movement of microscale devices is crucial to obtain advanced miniaturized motors. In this work, we report a high-speed rotating micromotor based on two-dimensional (2D) all-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 microplates controlled via alternating-current (AC) external electric field. Firstly, the device configuration with optimized electric field distribution has been determined via systematic physical simulation. Using this optimized biasing configuration, when an AC electric field is applied at the four-electrode system, the microplates suspended in the tetradecane solution rotate at a speed inversely proportional to AC frequency, with a maximum speed of 16.4 × 2π rad/s. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity of CsPbBr3 microplates has been determined in a contactless manner, which is approximately 10-9-10-8 S/m. Our work has extended the investigations on AC electric field-controlled micromotors from 1D to 2D scale, shedding new light on developing micromotors with new configuration.

Unravelling the role of vacancies in lead halide perovskite through electrical switching of photoluminescence.

Project description:We address the behavior in which a bias voltage can be used to switch on and off the photoluminescence of a planar film of methylammonium lead triiodide perovskite (MAPbI3) semiconductor with lateral symmetric electrodes. It is observed that a dark region advances from the positive electrode at a slow velocity of order of 10 μm s-1. Here we explain the existence of the sharp front by a drift of ionic vacancies limited by local saturation, that induce defects and drastically reduce the radiative recombination rate in the film. The model accounts for the time dependence of electrical current due to the ion-induced doping modification, that changes local electron and hole concentration with the drift of vacancies. The analysis of current dependence on time leads to a direct determination of the diffusion coefficient of iodine vacancies and provides detailed information of ionic effects over the electrooptical properties of hybrid perovskite materials.

Unusual Temperature Dependence of Bandgap in 2D Inorganic Lead-Halide Perovskite Nanoplatelets.

Project description:Understanding the origin of temperature-dependent bandgap in inorganic lead-halide perovskites is essential and important for their applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Herein, it is found that the temperature dependence of bandgap in CsPbBr3 perovskites is variable with material dimensionality. In contrast to the monotonous redshift ordinarily observed in bulk-like CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs), the bandgap of 2D CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibits an initial blueshift then redshift trend with decreasing temperature (290-10 K). The Bose-Einstein two-oscillator modeling manifests that the blueshift-redshift crossover of bandgap in the NPLs is attributed to the significantly larger weight of contribution from electron-optical phonon interaction to the bandgap renormalization in the NPLs than in the NCs. These new findings may gain deep insights into the origin of bandgap shift with temperature for both fundamentals and applications of perovskite semiconductor materials.

Lead halide perovskite vortex microlasers.

Project description:Lead halide perovskite microlasers have been very promising for versatile optoelectronic applications. However, most perovskite microlasers are linearly polarized with uniform wavefront. The structured laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum have rarely been studied and the applications of perovskites in next-generation optical communications are thus hindered. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate the perovskite vortex microlasers with highly directional outputs and well-controlled topological charges. High quality gratings have been experimentally fabricated in perovskite film and the subsequent vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) with divergent angles of 3o are achieved. With the control of Archimedean spiral gratings, the wavefront of the perovskite VCSELs has been switched to be helical with topological charges of q = -4 to 4. This research is able to expand the potential applications of perovskite microlasers in hybrid integrated photonic networks, as well as optical computing.

Thermal- and Light-Induced Evolution of the 2D/3D Interface in Lead-Halide Perovskite Films.

Project description:The instability of halide perovskites toward moisture is one of the main challenges in the field that needs to be overcome to successfully integrate these materials in commercially viable technologies. One of the most popular ways to ensure device stability is to form 2D/3D interfaces by using bulky organic molecules on top of the 3D perovskite thin film. Despite its promise, it is unclear whether this approach is able to avoid 3D bulk degradation under accelerated aging conditions, i.e., thermal stress and light soaking. In this regard, it is crucial to know whether the interface is structurally and electronically stable or not. In this work, we use the bulky phenethylammonium cation (PEA+) to form 2D layers on top of 3D single- and triple-cation halide perovskite films. The dynamical change of the 2D/3D interface is monitored under thermal stress and light soaking by in situ photoluminescence. We find that under pristine conditions the large organic cation diffuses only in 3D perovskite thin films of poor structural stability, i.e., single-cation MAPbI3. The same diffusion and a dynamical change of the crystalline structure of the 2D/3D interface are observed even on high-quality 3D films, i.e., triple-cation MAFACsPbI3, upon thermal stress at 85 °C and light soaking. Importantly, under such conditions, the resistance of the thin film to moisture is lost.

Halide Perovskite-Lead Chalcohalide Nanocrystal Heterostructures.

Project description:We report the synthesis of colloidal CsPbX3-Pb4S3Br2 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystal heterostructures, providing an example of a sharp and atomically resolved epitaxial interface between a metal halide perovskite and a non-perovskite lattice. The CsPbBr3-Pb4S3Br2 nanocrystals are prepared by a two-step direct synthesis using preformed subnanometer CsPbBr3 clusters. Density functional theory calculations indicate the creation of a quasi-type II alignment at the heterointerface as well as the formation of localized trap states, promoting ultrafast separation of photogenerated excitons and carrier trapping, as confirmed by spectroscopic experiments. Postsynthesis reaction with either Cl- or I- ions delivers the corresponding CsPbCl3-Pb4S3Br2 and CsPbI3-Pb4S3Br2 heterostructures, thus enabling anion exchange only in the perovskite domain. An increased structural rigidity is conferred to the perovskite lattice when it is interfaced with the chalcohalide lattice. This is attested by the improved stability of the metastable γ phase (or "black" phase) of CsPbI3 in the CsPbI3-Pb4S3Br2 heterostructure.

Formamidinium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocomposite Scintillators.

Project description:While there is great demand for effective, affordable radiation detectors in various applications, many commonly used scintillators have major drawbacks. Conventional inorganic scintillators have a fixed emission wavelength and require expensive, high-temperature synthesis; plastic scintillators, while fast, inexpensive, and robust, have low atomic numbers, limiting their X-ray stopping power. Formamidinium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals show promise as scintillators due to their high X-ray attenuation coefficient and bright luminescence. Here, we used a room-temperature, solution-growth method to produce mixed-halide FAPbX3 (X = Cl, Br) nanocrystals with emission wavelengths that can be varied between 403 and 531 nm via adjustments to the halide ratio. The substitution of bromine for increasing amounts of chlorine resulted in violet emission with faster lifetimes, while larger proportions of bromine resulted in green emission with increased luminescence intensity. By loading FAPbBr3 nanocrystals into a PVT-based plastic scintillator matrix, we produced 1 mm-thick nanocomposite scintillators, which have brighter luminescence than the PVT-based plastic scintillator alone. While nanocomposites such as these are often opaque due to optical scattering from aggregates of the nanoparticles, we used a surface modification technique to improve transmission through the composites. A composite of FAPbBr3 nanocrystals encapsulated in inert PMMA produced even stronger luminescence, with intensity 3.8× greater than a comparative FAPbBr3/plastic scintillator composite. However, the luminescence decay time of the FAPbBr3/PMMA composite was more than 3× slower than that of the FAPbBr3/plastic scintillator composite. We also demonstrate the potential of these lead halide perovskite nanocomposite scintillators for low-cost X-ray imaging applications.

Heterogeneous Photon Recycling and Charge Diffusion Enhance Charge Transport in Quasi-2D Lead-Halide Perovskite Films.

Project description:The addition of large hydrophobic cations to lead halide perovskites has significantly enhanced the environmental stability of photovoltaic cells based on these materials. However, the associated formation of two-dimensional structures inside the material can lead to dielectric confinement, higher exciton binding energies, wider bandgaps and limited charge-carrier mobilities. Here we show that such effects are not detrimental to the charge transport for carefully processed films comprising a self-assembled thin layer of quasi-two-dimensional (2D) perovskite interfaced with a 3D MAPbI3 perovskite layer. We apply a combination of time-resolved photoluminescence and photoconductivity spectroscopy to reveal the charge-carrier recombination and transport through the film profile, when either the quasi-2D or the 3D layers are selectively excited. Through modeling of the recorded dynamics, we demonstrate that while the charge-carrier mobility is lower within the quasi-2D region, charge-carrier diffusion to the 3D phase leads to a rapid recovery in photoconductivity even when the quasi-2D region is initially photoexcited. In addition, the blue-shifted emission originating from quasi-2D regions overlaps significantly with the absorption spectrum of the 3D perovskite, allowing for highly effective "heterogeneous photon recycling". We show that this combination fully compensates for the adverse effects of electronic confinement, yielding quasi-2D perovskites with highly efficient charge transporting properties.
