The synthesis of green fluorescent carbon dots for warm white LEDs.

ABSTRACT: Green fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized with pyrogallic acid as carbon source by solvothermal method in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). During the formation of the CDs, DMF not only serves as solvent for reaction, but also as nitrogen source to participate in the reaction. At the same time, it promotes the formation of large conjugated sp²-domain in CDs. The prepared CDs have an average size of 11.9 nm, excitation-independent emission centered at 520 nm and fluorescence quantum yield of 16.8%. For practical applications, warm white light-emitting diodes were fabricated by combining the CDs/N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (KH-792) mixture with UV chip, which emitted warm white light with color coordinates of (0.39, 0.47) and a correlated color temperature of 4323 K suitable for indoor lighting.

Synthesis of green fluorescent carbon dots from carbon nano-onions and graphene oxide.

Project description:In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) have triggered considerable interest due to their intriguing tunable photoluminescence properties. In this work, we report the synthesis of green-emitting CDs from two different carbon sources, namely carbon nano-onions and graphene oxide. We also investigate the effects of the two starting materials on the physico-chemical properties of the as-synthesised CDs. Our results show that both CDs exhibit remarkable emission properties and different fluorescence behaviour, which is attributed to the differences in size, surface defects, as well as the presence of different surface functional groups. Moreover, we propose an innovative, low-cost and time-saving method for the recovery of CDs from solution by acetone-mediated precipitation. We demonstrate that this methodology can rival the common dialysis-based purification approach; it shows excellent photostability, and the CD fluorescent properties are retained. Our work paves the way for the use of these particles for biomedical applications by exploiting their interesting fluorescent features as well as their oxygen-enriched surface for further functionalization strategies.

One-Step Synthesis of White-Light-Emitting Carbon Dots for White LEDs with a High Color Rendering Index of 97.

Project description:White-light-emitting carbon dots (WCDs) show innate advantages as phosphors in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). For WLEDs, the color rendering index (CRI) is the most important metric to evaluate its performance. Herein, WCDs are prepared by a facile one-step solvothermal reaction of trimellitic acid and o-phenylenediamine. It consists of four CDs identified by column chromatography as blue, green, yellow, red, and thus white light is a superposition of these four types of light. The mixture of the four CDs undergoes Förster resonance energy transfer to induce the generation of white light. The photoluminescence of WCDs originates from the synergistic effect of carbon core and surface states. Thereinto, the carbon core states dominate in RCDs, and the increase of amide contents and degree of conjugation promote the redshift of the emission spectra, which is further confirmed by theoretical calculations. In addition, a high CRI of 97 is achieved when the WCDs are used as phosphors to fabricate WLEDs, which is almost the highest value up to now. The multicolor LEDs can also be fabricated by using the four multicolor CDs as phosphors, respectively. This work provides a novel approach to explore the rapid preparation of low-cost, high-performance WCDs and CDs-based WLEDs.

Synthesis of green fluorescent carbon dots and their application in mercury ion detection.

Project description:Green fluorescent carbon dots (GCDs) were synthesized using o-phenylenediamine and ethylenediamine through a one-step hydrothermal method, thereby eliminating the need for further processing. The GCDs exhibited strong green fluorescence that was effectively quenched by Hg2+ and Fe3+, with minimal interference from other metal ions, anions, and small biological molecules. By optimizing the buffer solution, interference from Fe3+ was mitigated, which enhanced the robustness of the GCDs as a fluorescence probe for Hg2+ detection. The detection range for Hg2+ was 0-100 μM, with a detection limit of 300 nM. The quenching mechanism was thoroughly investigated, and the GCDs were successfully applied to detect Hg2+ in real water samples, yielding satisfactory results. This work highlights the potential of GCDs for practical environmental monitoring and water quality analysis.

White carbon: Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles with tunable quantum yield in a reproducible green synthesis.

Project description:In this study, a new reliable, economic, and environmentally-friendly one-step synthesis is established to obtain carbon nanodots (CNDs) with well-defined and reproducible photoluminescence (PL) properties via the microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment of starch and Tris-acetate-EDTA (TAE) buffer as carbon sources. Three kinds of CNDs are prepared using different sets of above mentioned starting materials. The as-synthesized CNDs: C-CND (starch only), N-CND 1 (starch in TAE) and N-CND 2 (TAE only) exhibit highly homogenous PL and are ready to use without need for further purification. The CNDs are stable over a long period of time (>1 year) either in solution or as freeze-dried powder. Depending on starting material, CNDs with PL quantum yield (PLQY) ranging from less than 1% up to 28% are obtained. The influence of the precursor concentration, reaction time and type of additives on the optical properties (UV-Vis absorption, PL emission spectrum and PLQY) is carefully investigated, providing insight into the chemical processes that occur during CND formation. Remarkably, upon freeze-drying the initially brown CND-solution turns into a non-fluorescent white/slightly brown powder which recovers PL in aqueous solution and can potentially be applied as fluorescent marker in bio-imaging, as a reduction agent or as a photocatalyst.

One-Step Synthesis of Green Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Chloride Detecting and for Bioimaging.

Project description:The chloride ion is an essential ion in organisms, which plays an important role in maintaining normal cell functions. It is involved in many cell activities, such as cell proliferation, cell excitability regulation, immune response, and volume regulation. Accurate detection of the chloride ion can balance its concentration in vivo, which is of great significance. In this study, we developed a green fluorescent carbon quantum dot to detect chloride concentration through the "off-on" mechanism. First, the fluorescence of carbon dots is quenched by the complex of sulfhydryl and silver ions on the surface of carbon dots. Then, the addition of chloride ions pulls away the silver ions and restores the fluorescence. The fluorescence recovery is linearly related to the concentration of chloride ions, and the limit of detection is 2.817 μM, which is much lower than those of other reported chloride probes. Besides, cell and zebrafish experiments confirmed the biosafety and biocompatibility of the carbon dots, which provided a possibility for further applications in bioimaging in vivo.

Fluorescent films based on PVDF doped with carbon dots for evaluation of UVA protection of sunscreens and fabrication of cool white LEDs.

Project description:The ultraviolet-A (UVA) radiation from sunlight that reaches the earth's surface can induce premature aging, immunosuppression, and skin cancer. Commercial sunscreen products offer limited information regarding protection against UVA light. Therefore, proposing new and practical alternatives to evaluate the UVA protection capacity of commercial sunscreens is highly imperative. This work presents a novel methodology for evaluating the quality of sunscreens using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based films doped with plant derived photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs). The bluish white light emitting (under UVA exposure) PVDF/CD films were used to evaluate the UVA protection capacity of 8 different commercial sunscreens. The evaluation of UVA protection is based on the fluorescence attenuation observed with the films coated with sunscreens. In addition, visual evaluation of the UVA protection capacity of the sunscreens and commercial glasses, using the same films and a commercial UV lamp at 365 nm, has also been demonstrated. Two sunscreens with limited UVA protection were identified using the proposed simple evaluation mechanisms without conventionally used expensive instruments and complex methodologies. Additionally, the capacity of PVDF/CD material has been explored for the possible fabrication of WLEDs with cool light emission.

Green synthesis of carbon dots and their applications.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) are nanoparticles with tunable physicochemical and optical properties. Their resistance to photobleaching and relatively low toxicity render them attractive alternatives to fluorescent dyes and heavy metal-based quantum dots in the fields of bioimaging, sensing, catalysis, solar cells, and light-emitting diodes, among others. Moreover, they have garnered considerable attention as they lend themselves to green synthesis methods. Increasingly, one-pot syntheses comprising exclusively of renewable raw materials or renewable refined compounds are gaining favor over traditional approaches that rely on harsh chemicals and energy intensive conditions. The field of green CD synthesis is developing rapidly; however, challenges persist in ensuring the consistency of their properties (e.g., fluorescence quantum yield) relative to conventional preparation methods. This has mostly limited their use to sensing and bioimaging, leaving opportunities for development in optoelectronic applications. Herein, we discuss the most common green CD synthesis and purification methods reported in the literature and the renewable precursors used. The physical, chemical, and optical properties of the resulting green-synthesized CDs are critically reviewed, followed by a detailed description of their applications in sensing, bioimaging, biomedicine, inks, and catalysis. We conclude with an outlook on the future of green CD synthesis. Future research efforts should address the broad knowledge gap between CDs synthesized from renewable versus non-renewable precursors, focusing on discrepancies in their physical, chemical, and optical properties. The development of cost effective, safe, and sustainable green CDs with tunable properties will broaden their implementation in largely untapped applications, which include drug delivery, photovoltaics, catalysis, and more.

Highly Fluorescent Green Carbon Dots as a Fluorescent Probe for Detecting Mineral Water pH.

Project description:In this report, high-brightness green carbon dots were successfully prepared using 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid as the sole precursor and synthesized in one step using a solvothermal strategy. Under the excitation of 365 nm ultraviolet light, the quantum yield of carbon dots is as high as 53.8%. Experiments revealed that the carbon dots are highly carbonized and the surface is rich in amino and carboxyl groups. The synthesized carbon dots have good water solubility, and are resistant to ions and temperature. The fluorescence intensity of CDs is sensitive to pH changes and is linearly correlated with the pH in the near-neutral range (pH = 6.0 to 9.0). Our experiments showed that carbon dots were sensitive and accurate fluorescent probes for measuring the pH value of drinking water, which could provide an effective method for measuring the pH value of water in the future.

Green synthesis of amphiphilic carbon dots from organic solvents: application in fluorescent polymer composites and bio-imaging.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) have sparked tremendous attention due to their unique properties and vast potential in diverse fields. Herein, we report a green and cost-effective hydrothermal route for the synthesis of a series of CDs from readily available organics solvents. Since the organics were completely recyclable after the separation of CDs, this method holds immense potential for the large-scale synthesis of CDs. We found the DMF-CDs and DMAc-CDs possessed amphiphilicity and the diameter of amphiphilic DMF-CDs was ca. 3.5 nm with a narrow distribution. Moreover, these amphiphilic CDs emitted blue light under UV irradiation (365 nm) and the quantum yield could reach more than 30%. Due to their good solubility in organic solvent, DMF-CDs were successfully imbedded into polymers (i.e., PS and PMMA), which revealed their potential in painting, coating, and optical devices. In addition, benefiting from high quantum yield and low cytotoxicity, the DMF-CDs in aqueous media were used as fluorescent probes in living cells, which demonstrated their great potential in bio-imaging.

Green synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots from spices for in vitro imaging and tumour cell growth inhibition.

Project description:Carbon dots have demonstrated great potential as luminescent nanoparticles in bioapplications. Although such nanoparticles appear to exhibit low toxicity compared to other metal luminescent nanomaterials, today we know that the toxicity of carbon dots (C-dots) strongly depends on the protocol of fabrication. In this work, aqueous fluorescent C-dots have been synthesized from cinnamon, red chilli, turmeric and black pepper, by a one-pot green hydrothermal method. The synthesized C-dots were firstly characterized by means of UV-vis, fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The optical performance showed an outstanding ability for imaging purposes, with quantum yields up to 43.6%. Thus, the cytotoxicity of the above mentioned spice-derived C-dots was evaluated in vitro in human glioblastoma cells (LN-229 cancer cell line) and in human kidney cells (HK-2 non-cancerous cell line). Bioimaging and viability studies were performed with different C-dot concentrations from 0.1 to 2 mg·mL-1, exhibiting a higher uptake of C-dots in the cancer cultures compared to the non-cancerous cells. Results showed that the spice-derived C-dots inhibited cell viability dose-dependently after a 24 h incubation period, displaying a higher toxicity in LN-229, than in HK-2 cells. As a control, C-dots synthesized from citric acid did not show any significant toxicity in either cancerous or non-cancerous cells, implying that the tumour cell growth inhibition properties observed in the spice-derived C-dots can be attributed to the starting material employed for their fabrication. These results evidence that functional groups in the surface of the C-dots might be responsible for the selective cytotoxicity, as suggested by the presence of piperine in the surface of black pepper C-dots analysed by ESI-QTOF-MS.
