Project description:We demonstrate that emission of coherent transition radiation by a ∼1 GeV energy-electron beam passing through an Al foil is enhanced in intensity and extended in frequency spectral range, by the energy correlation established along the beam by coherent synchrotron radiation wakefield, in the presence of a proper electron optics in the beam delivery system. Analytical and numerical models, based on experimental electron beam parameters collected at the FERMI free electron laser (FEL), predict transition radiation with two intensity peaks at ∼0.3 THz and ∼1.5 THz, and extending up to 8.5 THz with intensity above 20 dB w.r.t. the main peak. Up to 80-µJ pulse energy integrated over the full bandwidth is expected at the source, and in agreement with experimental pulse energy measurements. By virtue of its implementation in an FEL beam dump line, this work promises dissemination of user-oriented multi-THz beamlines parasitic and self-synchronized to EUV and x-ray FELs.

Project description:Ultrafast high-brightness X-ray pulses have proven invaluable for a broad range of research. Such pulses are typically generated via synchrotron emission from relativistic electron bunches using large-scale facilities. Recently, significantly more compact X-ray sources based on laser-wakefield accelerated (LWFA) electron beams have been demonstrated. In particular, laser-driven sources, where the radiation is generated by transverse oscillations of electrons within the plasma accelerator structure (so-called betatron oscillations) can generate highly-brilliant ultrashort X-ray pulses using a comparably simple setup. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a method to markedly enhance the parameters of LWFA-driven betatron X-ray emission in a proof-of-principle experiment. We show a significant increase in the number of generated photons by specifically manipulating the amplitude of the betatron oscillations by using our novel Transverse Oscillating Bubble Enhanced Betatron Radiation scheme. We realize this through an orchestrated evolution of the temporal laser pulse shape and the accelerating plasma structure. This leads to controlled off-axis injection of electrons that perform large-amplitude collective transverse betatron oscillations, resulting in increased radiation emission. Our concept holds the promise for a method to optimize the X-ray parameters for specific applications, such as time-resolved investigations with spatial and temporal atomic resolution or advanced high-resolution imaging modalities, and the generation of X-ray beams with even higher peak and average brightness.

Project description:The strength of light-matter interaction in condensed matter is fundamentally linked to the orientation and oscillation strength of the materials' optical transition dipoles. Structurally anisotropic materials, e.g., elongated molecules, exhibit optical transition dipoles with fixed orientations that govern the angular-dependent light-matter interaction. Contrary, free electron-like metals should exhibit isotropic light-matter interaction with the light fields dictating the orientation of the optical transition dipoles. Here, we demonstrate that an anisotropic direction of the optical transition dipoles even exists in highly free electron-like noble metal surfaces. Our time- and phase-resolved photoemission experiment reveals coherent interference effects on the (110)-oriented silver surface after optical excitation with two non-interfering cross-polarized pulses. We explain this coherent material response within the density matrix formalism by an intrinsic coupling of the non-interfering light fields mediated by optical transition dipoles with fixed orientations in silver.

Project description:The ability to prepare, optically read out and coherently control single quantum states is a key requirement for quantum information processing. Optically active solid-state emitters have emerged as promising candidates with their prospects for on-chip integration as quantum nodes and sources of coherent photons connecting these nodes. Under a strongly driving resonant laser field, such quantum emitters can exhibit quantum behaviour such as Autler-Townes splitting and the Mollow triplet spectrum. Here we demonstrate coherent control of a strongly driven optical transition in silicon vacancy centre in diamond. Rapid optical detection of photons enabled the observation of time-resolved coherent Rabi oscillations and the Mollow triplet spectrum. Detection with a probing transition further confirmed Autler-Townes splitting generated by a strong laser field. The coherence time of the emitted photons is comparable to its lifetime and robust under a very strong driving field, which is promising for the generation of indistinguishable photons.

Project description:High-resolution imaging offers one of the most promising approaches for exploring and understanding the structure and function of biomaterials and biological systems. X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) combined with coherent diffraction imaging can theoretically provide high-resolution spatial information regarding biological materials using a single XFEL pulse. Currently, the application of this method suffers from the low scattering cross-section of biomaterials and X-ray damage to the sample. However, XFELs can provide pulses of such short duration that the data can be collected using the "diffract and destroy" approach before the effects of radiation damage on the data become significant. These experiments combine the use of enhanced coherent diffraction imaging with single-shot XFEL radiation to investigate the cellular architecture of Staphylococcus aureus with and without labeling by gold (Au) nanoclusters. The resolution of the images reconstructed from these diffraction patterns were twice as high or more for gold-labeled samples, demonstrating that this enhancement method provides a promising approach for the high-resolution imaging of biomaterials and biological systems.

Project description:Modelocked lasers constitute the fundamental source of optically-coherent ultrashort-pulsed radiation, with huge impact in science and technology. Their modeling largely rests on the master equation (ME) approach introduced in 1975 by Hermann A. Haus. However, that description fails when the medium dynamics is fast and, ultimately, when light-matter quantum coherence is relevant. Here we set a rigorous and general ME framework, the coherent ME (CME), that overcomes both limitations. The CME predicts strong deviations from Haus ME, which we substantiate through an amplitude-modulated semiconductor laser experiment. Accounting for coherent effects, like the Risken-Nummedal-Graham-Haken multimode instability, we envisage the usefulness of the CME for describing self-modelocking and spontaneous frequency comb formation in quantum-cascade and quantum-dot lasers. Furthermore, the CME paves the way for exploiting the rich phenomenology of coherent effects in laser design, which has been hampered so far by the lack of a coherent ME formalism.

Project description:Using a conventional Raman experimental apparatus, we demonstrate that the photoluminescent (PL) yield from ultrasonication-exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) (MoS2 and WS2) can be increased by up to 8-fold by means of a laser etching procedure. This laser etching process allows us to controllably pattern and reduce the number of layers of the solution-exfoliated material, overcoming the key drawback to solvent-based exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting materials for applications in optoelectronics. The successful laser thinning of the exfoliated 2D crystals was investigated systematically by changes in both Raman and PL spectra. A simple proof-of-principle of the scalability of this laser etching technique for solution-exfoliated TMD crystals was also demonstrated. As well as being applicable for individual materials, it is also possible to use this simple laser etching technique to investigate the structure of solution-generated van der Waals heterostructures, consisting of layers of both MoS2 and WS2.

Project description:The next-generation logic and memory devices using magnetic skyrmions as spintronic information carriers are frequently studied, thanks to their remarkable magnetic stability, extremely compact size and very-low-cost driving forces within nanotracks. In order to realize skyrmion-based spintronic devices, understanding the skyrmion generation and their dynamics are essential. In this study, we have carried out a systematic micromagnetic simulation study on coherent magnetic skyrmion generation in which we theoretically engineered nanotracks by embedding an anti-notch to a channel of certain width. We found that the drift velocity and the skyrmion generation frequency can be tailored by the applied spin-polarized DC current density. Moreover, skyrmion generation is crucially affected by both damping and nonadiabaticity parameters, as well as the geometry of the anti-notch. We anticipate that our predictions provide rational basis for skyrmion-based devices in which skyrmions are used as information carriers, and influence future discussions.

Project description:Hard X-ray sources from femtosecond (fs) laser-produced plasmas, including the betatron X-rays from laser wakefield-accelerated electrons, have compact sizes, fs pulse duration and fs pump-probe capability, making it promising for wide use in material and biological sciences. Currently the main problem with such betatron X-ray sources is the limited average flux even with ultra-intense laser pulses. Here, we report ultra-bright betatron X-rays can be generated using a clustering gas jet target irradiated with a small size laser, where a ten-fold enhancement of the X-ray yield is achieved compared to the results obtained using a gas target. We suggest the increased X-ray photon is due to the existence of clusters in the gas, which results in increased total electron charge trapped for acceleration and larger wiggling amplitudes during the acceleration. This observation opens a route to produce high betatron average flux using small but high repetition rate laser facilities for applications.

Project description:The systems of active Brownian grains can be considered as open systems, in which there is an exchange of energy and matter with the environment. The collective phenomena of active Brownian grains can demonstrate analogies with ordinary phase transitions. We study the active Brownian motion of light-absorbing and strongly interacting grains far from equilibrium suspended in gas discharge under laser irradiation when the nature and intensity of the active motion depend on the effect of radiation. Active Brownian motion is caused by photophoresis, i.e., absorption of laser radiation at the metal-coated surface of the grain creates radiometric force, which in turn drives the grains. We experimentally observed the active Brownian motion of charged grains in the transition of the grain monolayer from the solid to liquid state. An analysis of the character of motion, including the mean-square and linear displacement and persistence length at various values of the randomization (coupling parameter) of the grain structure, was presented.
