Amine-assisted solubilization of unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine for film deposition purposes.

ABSTRACT: Typical zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPc) exhibit poor solubility in common solvents and, hence, are processed into thin films mostly from the vapor phase. The present work discloses how these limitations can be effectively overcome. Specifically, highly concentrated molecular solutions of unsubstituted ZnPc are prepared by combining a weakly structured ZnPc polymorph with binary liquid systems composed of a π-accepting solvent and a simple nitrogenous base, such as ammonia or tertiary aliphatic amine. The amine-assisted solubilization of ZnPc is rationalized by quantitative analysis of optical spectra and electrostatic potential maps of the dye molecule. A volatile aminoalcohol is proposed in order to rationally modify the habit of ZnPc crystallites and concurrently to produce uniform deposition of the crystallites by drop-casting the dye solutions onto a glass substrate. Finally, a versatile algorithm for wet-processed ZnPc films is declared.

Surface engineering of zinc phthalocyanine organic thin-film transistors results in part-per-billion sensitivity towards cannabinoid vapor.

Project description:Phthalocyanine-based organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) have been demonstrated as sensors for a range of analytes, including cannabinoids, in both liquid and gas phases. Detection of the primary cannabinoids, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), is necessary for quality control and regulation, however, current techniques are often not readily available for consumers, industry, and law-enforcement. The OTFT characteristics, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra, and grazing incident wide angle x-ray scattering (GIWAXS) spectra of two copper and three zinc phthalocyanines, with varying degrees of peripheral fluorination, were screened to determine sensitivity to THC vapor. Unsubstituted ZnPc was found to be the most sensitive material and, by tuning thin-film morphology, crystal polymorphs, and thickness through altered physical vapor deposition conditions, we increased the sensitivity to THC by 100x. Here we demonstrate that deposition conditions, and the resulting physical film characteristics, play a significant role in device sensitization.

Improved performance of small molecule solar cell by using oblique deposition technique and zinc phthalocyanine cathode buffer layer.

Project description:Short circuit current density (J sc) and open circuit voltage (V oc) are two important parameters to evaluate the performance of organic solar cells. How to increase these two parameters without using novel material still remains a challenge. Two small molecules, zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole (PTCBI), are used to fabricate ITO/ZnPc/ZnPc:PTCBI/PTCBI/ZnPc/Al photovoltaic device. We find that J sc and V oc are enhanced by using oblique deposition technique and ZnPc cathode buffer layer, respectively. Analysis of the active layer reveals phase segregation in obliquely deposited ZnPc:PTCBI bulk heterojunction layer. Field emission measurement is used to probe the band bending and internal field in ZnPc/PTCBI planar heterojunction. The effects of phase segregation and internal field are discussed. This work shows that careful assembly of donor and acceptor material is beneficial to small molecule photovoltaic device.

Ultraviolet-A-transparent aluminum-doped zinc oxide thin film electrodes by pulsed laser deposition.

Project description:The optoelectronics industry eagerly demands high-performance and low-cost ultraviolet (UV)-transparent electrodes to increase the efficiency of UV devices. However, aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) is rarely considered a candidate for UV-transparent electrodes. Herein, this work fabricates AZO films by pulsed laser deposition and shows the potential of these films as UVA (320-400 nm)-transparent electrodes with Haacke's figure of merit up to ∼3.23 × 10-3 Ω-1. A strong correlation is discovered between the UV transparency and the substrate temperature during the fabrication of AZO thin film electrodes. The AZO film fabricated with a substrate temperature of 500°C possesses an optical band gap of ∼3.86 eV, an average transmittance to UVA of ∼77.1%, and a sheet resistance of ∼23 Ω, demonstrating the high potential as UVA-transparent electrodes for high-performance optoelectronics.

Aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition of transparent superhydrophobic film by using mixed functional alkoxysilanes.

Project description:A method for the preparation of transparent superhydrophobic silica coatings on glass substrates via aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) is described. A multi-layer process to produce dual scale silica nanoparticles films, by using different functional alkoxysilanes was investigated. A first layer of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) and a second layer of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) were deposited at different temperatures to generate micro and nano particles of silica. Finally, a layer of perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane was deposited on top of the two layers to achieve superhydrophobicity. The transparent superhydrophobic film showed transparency of 90% in the visible light region with a static water contact angle of 165° and a sliding angle lower than 1°. Various durability tests were performed on the transparent superhydrophobic film, showing a constant water repellency after corrosion and organic solvents tests, strong resistance under UV light, and thermal stability up to 400 °C. Sandpaper mechanical robustness durability test showed superhydrophobicity for up to 5 rubbing cycles. In this study, a novel strategy to achieve highly transparent superhydrophobic glass surfaces using AACVD of alkoxysilanes, to produce surfaces with excellent durability is described. This shows great potential to obtain silica superhydrophobic films for large-scale applications.

Growth of Low-Defect Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Film Using Condensation-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition Method.

Project description:It is significantly important to modulate the electrical properties of graphene films through doping for building desired electronic devices. One of the effective doping methods is the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of graphene films with heteroatom doping during the process, but this usually results in nitrogen-doped graphene with low doping levels, high defect density, and low carrier mobility. In this work, we developed a novel condensation-assisted CVD method for the synthesis of high-quality nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) films at low temperatures of 400 °C using solid 3,4,5-trichloropyridine as a carbon and nitrogen source. The condensation system was employed to reduce the volatilization of the solid source during the non-growth stage, which leads to a great improvement of quality of as-prepared NG films. Compared to the one synthesized using conventional CVD methods, the NG films synthesized using condensation-assisted CVD present extremely low defects with a ratio of from D- to G-peak intensity (ID/IG) in the Raman spectrum lower than 0.35. The corresponding total N content, graphitic nitrogen/total nitrogen ratio, and carrier mobility reach 3.2 at%, 67%, and 727 cm2V-1S-1, respectively. This improved condensation-assisted CVD method provides a facile and well-controlled approach for fabricating high-quality NG films, which would be very useful for building electronic devices with high electrical performance.

Rational design of a zinc phthalocyanine binding protein.

Project description:Phthalocyanines have long been used as primary donor molecules in synthetic light-powered devices due to their superior properties when compared to natural light activated molecules such as chlorophylls. Their use in biological contexts, however, has been severely restricted due to their high degree of self-association, and its attendant photoquenching, in aqueous environments. To this end we report the rational redesign of a de novo four helix bundle di-heme binding protein into a heme and Zinc(II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) dyad in which the ZnPc is electronically and photonically isolated. The redesign required transformation of the homodimeric protein into a single chain four helix bundle and the addition of a negatively charge sulfonate ion to the ZnPc macrocycle. To explore the role of topology on ZnPc binding two constructs were made and the resulting differences in affinity can be explained by steric interference of the newly added connecting loop. Singular binding of ZnPc was verified by absorption, fluorescence, and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. The engineering guidelines determined here, which enable the simple insertion of a monomeric ZnPc binding site into an artificial helical bundle, are a robust starting point for the creation of functional photoactive nanodevices.

Hypergravity-assisted chemical liquid deposition of nano-granular film on the inner surface of a quartz tube.

Project description:Transparent tubes with functions of heating and temperature measurement are badly required in the visualization investigation of two-phase flows and flow-boiling heat transfer. In order to prepare such a tube, we introduced a cost-effective and energy-efficient procedure of hypergravity-assisted chemical liquid deposition (HACLD) to produce transparent and conductive silver (Ag) films on the inner surfaces of quartz tubes, typically 50 mm in length and 8 mm in inner diameter with a set-up that was designed and built for this purpose. Precursors of organometallic Ag precursor solutions were prepared by dissolving silver citrate and 1,2-diaminopropane in 2-methoxyethanol with required concentration for the chemical liquid deposition process. Semitransparent and conductive Ag films formed inside the required quartz tubes under specific heating process in hypergravity. One of the films was about 47 nm in thickness, 23 Ω per square sheet resistance, and 30% optical transmittance. This attempt may pave a way for the understanding of the film forming mechanism in hypergravity, and the development of a film preparation technology of HACLD.

Synthesis and photophysics of an octathioglycosylated zinc(II) phthalocyanine.

Project description:A water soluble zinc(II) phthalocyanine symmetrically appended with eight thioglucose units was synthesized from commercially available hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatozinc(II) by controlled nucleophilic substitution of the peripheral fluoro groups. The photophysical properties and cancer cell uptake studies of this nonhydrolyzable thioglycosylated phthalocyanine are reported. The new compound has amphiphilic character, is chemically stable, and can potentially be used as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy.

Fast pH-Driven Solubilization Method of Realgar (As4S4) to Reduce the Toxicity of Arsenic [As(III)] for Medical Purposes

Project description:Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a fulminant form of hematological cancer, representing 5-15% of adult leukemias and also affecting children. It is characterized by the 15:17 chromosomal translocation, which produces the pathogenic retinoic acid receptor (RAR) alpha/promyelocytic leukemia protein (PML) fusion product. Remission of APL was recently achieved using the first chemotherapy-independent oral drug regimen in anticancer therapy, consisting of all-trans retinoic acid (targeting RARalpha) and the arsenic sulphide realgar (targeting PML). A broader use of realgar is, however, hampered by the poor solubility of this mineral. We here describe a scalable pH- and temperature-based solubilization process for realgar. The solution obtained displays higher therapeutic indices compared to other arseni-containing compounds, including opriment and arsenic trioxide (an intravenous chemotherapeutic counterpart), which is in line with the lower toxicity of realgar observed in clinical trials. Our data also show that solubilized realgar can disrupt HIV latency, the main barrier to an HIV/AIDS cure, in CD4 T cells of people living with HIV. This discovery may also open new avenues for designing therapies based on orally administrable arsenic-containing compounds.

Impact of Ions on Film Conformality and Crystallinity during Plasma-Assisted Atomic Layer Deposition of TiO<sub>2</sub>.

Project description:This work demonstrates that ions have a strong impact on the growth per cycle (GPC) and material properties during plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition (ALD) of TiO2 (titanium dioxide), even under mild plasma conditions with low-energy (<20 eV) ions. Using vertical trench nanostructures and microscopic cavity structures that locally block the flux of ions, it is observed that the impact of (low-energy) ions is an important factor for the TiO2 film conformality. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the GPC in terms of film thickness can increase by 20 to >200% under the influence of ions, which is correlated with an increase in film crystallinity and an associated strong reduction in the wet etch rate (in 30:1 buffered HF). The magnitude of the influence of ions is observed to depend on multiple parameters such as the deposition temperature, plasma exposure time, and ion energy, which may all be used to minimize or exploit this effect. For example, a relatively moderate influence of ions is observed at 200 °C when using short plasma steps and a grounded substrate, providing a low ion-energy dose of ∼1 eV nm-2 cycle-1, while a high effect is obtained when using extended plasma exposures or substrate biasing (∼100 eV nm-2 cycle-1). This work on TiO2 shows that detailed insight into the role of ions during plasma ALD is essential for precisely controlling the film conformality, material properties, and process reproducibility.
