Defect Passivation through (α-Methylguanido)acetic Acid in Perovskite Solar Cell for High Operational Stability.

ABSTRACT: Defect passivation has become essential in improving efficiency and stability in perovskite solar cells. Here, we report the use of (α-methylguanido)acetic acid, also known as creatine, as a passivation molecule. It is employed both as an additive and as a surface passivation layer of perovskite thin films, given its multiple functional groups, which could address different defect sites, and its size, which could inherently affect the material structure. We prove that the surface passivation is more efficiently working by removing vulnerable defects on the surface. Hole and electron defect densities were reduced, leading to the highest power conversion efficiency of 22.6%. In addition, it can effectively protect the perovskite thin film and improve the operational stabilities in high thermal (85 °C) and humid conditions (50% relative humidity), suggesting a strong stability of the surface passivation layer.

Defect mitigation using d-penicillamine for efficient methylammonium-free perovskite solar cells with high operational stability.

Project description:Trap-dominated non-radiative charge recombination is one of the key factors that limit the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which was widely studied in methylammonium (MA) containing PSCs. However, there is a need to elucidate the defect chemistry of thermally stable, MA-free, cesium/formamidinium (Cs/FA)-based perovskites. Herein, we show that d-penicillamine (PA), an edible antidote for treating heavy metal ions, not only effectively passivates the iodine vacancies (Pb2+ defects) through coordination with the -SH and -COOH groups in PA, but also finely tunes the crystallinity of Cs/FA-based perovskite film. Benefiting from these merits, a reduction of non-radiative recombination and an increase in photoluminescence lifetime have been achieved. As a result, the champion MA-free device exhibits an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.4%, an open-circuit voltage of 1.163 V, a notable fill factor of 82%, and excellent long-term operational stability. Moreover, the defect passivation strategy can be further extended to a mini module (substrate: 4 × 4 cm2, active area: 7.2 cm2) as well as a wide-bandgap (∼1.73 eV) Cs/FA perovskite system by delivering PCEs of 16.3% and 20.2%, respectively, demonstrating its universality in defect passivation for efficient PSCs.

Modulating Crystallization and Defect Passivation by Butyrolactone Molecule for Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:The attainment of a well-crystallized photo-absorbing layer with minimal defects is crucial for achieving high photovoltaic performance in polycrystalline solar cells. However, in the case of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), precise control over crystallization and elemental distribution through solution processing remains a challenge. In this study, we propose the use of a multifunctional molecule, α-amino-γ-butyrolactone (ABL), as a modulator to simultaneously enhance crystallization and passivate defects, thereby improving film quality and deactivating nonradiative recombination centers in the perovskite absorber. The Lewis base groups present in ABL facilitate nucleation, leading to enhanced crystallinity, while also retarding crystallization. Additionally, ABL effectively passivates Pb2+ dangling bonds, which are major deep-level defects in perovskite films. This passivation process reduces recombination losses, promotes carrier transfer and extraction, and further improves efficiency. Consequently, the PSCs incorporating the ABL additive exhibit an increase in conversion efficiency from 18.30% to 20.36%, along with improved long-term environmental stability. We believe that this research will contribute to the design of additive molecular structures and the engineering of components in perovskite precursor colloids.

Defect Passivation in Perovskite Solar Cells Using Polysuccinimide-Based Green Polymer Additives.

Project description:Controlling traps and structural defects in perovskite absorber layers is crucial for enhancing both the device efficiency and long-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here we demonstrate the modification of perovskite films by introducing low-cost green polymers, polysuccinimide (PSI) and polyasparagine (PASP), into the perovskite layer. Structural, morphological and optoelectronic properties of polymer-modified perovskite films were probed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The incorporation of PSI triggers interactions between the polymer and perovskite, leading to the passivation of surface defects at the grain boundaries and improved morphology of perovskite films. This defect passivation boosted PSC performance, providing power conversion efficiency (PCE) values up to 20.1%. An optimal polymer concentration of 0.1 mg/mL in the perovskite precursor solution was identified for an improvement in the photovoltaic performance. It was shown that the primary factor leading to the observed enhancement in the power conversion efficiency for PSI-modified PSCs is the increase in the lifetime of charge carriers due to the efficient passivation of surface defects and suppression of recombination losses. Additionally, PSI-modified PSCs demonstrated enhanced stability, retaining over 80% of their initial efficiency after 40 days of storage under ambient conditions without encapsulation. The obtained results highlight the effectiveness of green polymer additives in passivating surface defects in perovskite films and provide a viable approach for improving the stability and performance of perovskite solar cells.

Defect Passivation Using Trichloromelamine for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Nonradiative recombination losses caused by defects in the perovskite layer seriously affects the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Hence, defect passivation is an effective way to improve the performance of PSCs. In this work, trichloromelamine (TCM) was used as a defects passivator by adding it into the perovskite precursor solution. The experimental results show that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSC increased from 18.87 to 20.15% after the addition of TCM. What's more, the environmental stability of PSCs was also improved. The working mechanism of TCM was thoroughly investigated, which can be ascribed to the interaction between the -NH- group and uncoordinated lead ions in the perovskite. This work provides a promising strategy for achieving highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Enhancing Perovskite Solar Cell Performance through Propylamine Hydroiodide Passivation.

Project description:In recent years, the power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells has increased rapidly. Perovskites can be prepared using simple and cost-effective solution methods. However, the perovskite films obtained are usually polycrystalline and contain numerous defects. Passivation of these defects is crucial for enhancing the performance of solar cells. Here, we report the use of propylamine hydroiodide (PAI) for defect passivation. We found that PAI can result in higher-efficiency cells by reducing the defects and suppressing non-radiative recombination. Consequently, n-i-p perovskite solar cells with a certificated efficiency of 21% were obtained. In addition, PAI exhibited excellent performance in p-i-n devices by serving as a buried interface layer, leading to an improved efficiency of 23%.

Interfacial Passivation Engineering of Perovskite Solar Cells with Fill Factor over 82% and Outstanding Operational Stability on n-i-p Architecture.

Project description:Tremendous efforts have been dedicated toward minimizing the open-circuit voltage deficits on perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and the fill factors are still relatively low. This hinders their further application in large scalable modules. Herein, we employ a newly designed ammonium salt, cyclohexylethylammonium iodide (CEAI), for interfacial engineering between the perovskite and hole-transporting layer (HTL), which enhanced the fill factor to 82.6% and consequent PCE of 23.57% on the target device. This can be associated with a reduction of the trap-assisted recombination rate at the 3D perovskite surface, via formation of a 2D perovskite interlayer. Remarkably, the property of the 2D perovskite interlayer along with the cyclohexylethyl group introduced by CEAI treatment also determines a pronounced enhancement in the surface hydrophobicity, leading to an outstanding stability of over 96% remaining efficiency of the passivated devices under maximum power point tracking with one sun illumination under N2 atmosphere at room temperature after 1500 h.

Surface Passivation of Perovskite Solar Cells Toward Improved Efficiency and Stability.

Project description:The advancement of perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) technology toward commercialized promotion needs high efficiency and optimum stability. By introducing a small molecular material such as tetratetracontane (TTC, CH3(CH2)42CH3) at the fullerene (C60)/perovskite interface of planar p-i-n PVSCs, we significantly reduced the interfacial traps, thereby suppressing electron recombination and facilitating electron extraction. Consequently, an improved efficiency of 20.05% was achieved with a high fill factor of 79.4%, which is one of the best performances for small molecular-modified PVSCs. Moreover, the hydrophobic TTC successfully protects the perovskite film from water damage. As a result, we realized a better long-term stability that maintains 87% of the initial efficiency after continuous exposure for 200 h in air.

Shallow-level defect passivation by 6H perovskite polytype for highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells.

Project description:The power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells continues to increase. However, defects in perovskite materials are detrimental to their carrier dynamics and structural stability, ultimately limiting the photovoltaic characteristics and stability of perovskite solar cells. Herein, we report that 6H polytype perovskite effectively engineers defects at the interface with cubic polytype FAPbI3, which facilitates radiative recombination and improves the stability of the polycrystalline film. We particularly show the detrimental effects of shallow-level defect that originates from the formation of the most dominant iodide vacancy (VI+) in FAPbI3. Furthermore, additional surface passivation on top of the hetero-polytypic perovskite film results in an ultra-long carrier lifetime exceeding 18 μs, affords power conversion efficiencies of 24.13% for perovskite solar cells, 21.92% (certified power conversion efficiency: 21.44%) for a module, and long-term stability. The hetero-polytypic perovskite configuration may be considered as close to the ideal polycrystalline structure in terms of charge carrier dynamics and stability.

Defect passivation in methylammonium/bromine free inverted perovskite solar cells using charge-modulated molecular bonding.

Project description:Molecular passivation is a prominent approach for improving the performance and operation stability of halide perovskite solar cells (HPSCs). Herein, we reveal discernible effects of diammonium molecules with either an aryl or alkyl core onto Methylammonium-free perovskites. Piperazine dihydriodide (PZDI), characterized by an alkyl core-electron cloud-rich-NH terminal, proves effective in mitigating surface and bulk defects and modifying surface chemistry or interfacial energy band, ultimately leading to improved carrier extraction. Benefiting from superior PZDI passivation, the device achieves an impressive efficiency of 23.17% (area ~1 cm2) (low open circuit voltage deficit ~0.327 V) along with superior operational stability. We achieve a certified efficiency of ~21.47% (area ~1.024 cm2) for inverted HPSC. PZDI strengthens adhesion to the perovskite via -NH2I and Mulliken charge distribution. Device analysis corroborates that stronger bonding interaction attenuates the defect densities and suppresses ion migration. This work underscores the crucial role of bifunctional molecules with stronger surface adsorption in defect mitigation, setting the stage for the design of charge-regulated molecular passivation to enhance the performance and stability of HPSC.
