New data of plant leaf traits from Central Europe.

ABSTRACT: Trait-based ecology is gaining ground nowadays on species-based ecology: the number of research and publication focusing on the ecological role of taxa instead of the species themselves increased significantly in the last two decades. One great advantage of this approach is that communities with different species composition due to great geographical distances (e.g., different continents) or different environmental conditions (e.g., loess, sand, and alkaline grasslands) become comparable. Obtaining trait values is, however, labour and time consuming even in the case of so-called soft traits. It is therefore reasonable and desirable for scientists to share their data as widely as possible. Demand for such data induced the publication of data papers and the establishment of databases, which support both theoretical ecological research and practical restoration ecological projects. Although several international databases (e.g., TRY, LEDA, CLO-PLA, BiolFLOR) are available nowadays, Central and Eastern European species are either missing or underrepresented in them. Consequently, measurement and publication of the traits of species typical in the above region is necessary. This paper presents leaf trait (leaf fresh and dry weight, leaf area, specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content) data for more than 1100 species of the Central European flora.

Project description:Leaf traits often vary with plant neighbourhood composition, which in turn may mediate plant susceptibility to herbivory. However, it is unknown whether there are any common patterns of change in leaf trait expression in response to neighbourhood diversity, and whether these responses confer increased resistance or susceptibility to herbivores.We used meta-analysis to combine data from 43 studies that examined the influence of neighbourhood diversity on eight physical and chemical leaf traits that could affect herbivory. All leaf traits apart from leaf thickness were highly plastic and exhibited significant differences between plant monocultures and species mixtures, but the direction of effect was variable. Leaf toughness was the only trait that displayed a significant decrease with plant diversity, whereas specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf nitrogen were both marginally increased in species mixtures.The magnitude and direction of leaf trait responses to neighbourhood diversity were independent of plant density and phylogenetic diversity, but changes in SLA correlated positively with plant species richness. SLA was also significantly increased in experimental studies, but not in observational studies, while neighbourhoods containing nitrogen-fixers were associated with increased leaf nitrogen and reduced phenolics. When studies on the over-represented species Betula pendula were removed from the analysis, the effect of neighbourhood diversity on leaf toughness became nonsignificant, but phenolics were significantly reduced in diverse neighbourhoods composed of mature trees, and marginally reduced in species mixtures across all studies.Increases in plant neighbourhood diversity are often associated with reductions of herbivory, although in some cases, the reverse occurs, and plants growing in species mixtures are found to suffer greater herbivory than those in monocultures. This study offers a potential explanation for the latter phenomenon, as our results show that leaf trait expression is highly plastic in response to neighbourhood diversity, and in certain cases could lead to increased leaf quality, which in turn could promote greater rates of herbivory. Project description:Shade avoidance syndrome (SAS) refers to a set of plant responses that increases light capture in dense stands. This process is crucial for plants in natural and agricultural environments as they compete for resources and avoid suboptimal conditions. Although the molecular, biochemical, and physiological mechanisms underlying the SAS response have been extensively studied, the genetic basis of developmental variation in leaves in regard to leaf area, petiole length, and leaf length (i.e., their allometric relationships) remains unresolved. In this study, with the recombinant inbred line (RIL) population, the developmental traits of leaves of Arabidopsis were investigated under two growth density conditions (high- and low-density plantings). The observed changes were then reconstructed digitally, and their allometric relationships were modelled. Taking the genome-wide association analysis, the SNP genotype and the dynamic phenotype of the leaf from both densities were combined to explore the allometry QTLs. Under different densities, leaf change phenotype was analyzed from two core ecological scenarios: (i) the allometric change of the leaf area with leaf length, and (ii) the change of the leaf length with petiole length. QTLs modulating these two scenarios were characterized as 'leaf shape QTLs' and 'leaf position QTLs'. With functional mapping, results showed a total of 30 and 24 significant SNPs for shapeQTLs and positionQTLs, respectively. By annotation, immune pathway genes, photosensory receptor genes, and phytohormone genes were identified to be involved in the SAS response. Interestingly, genes modulating the immune pathway and salt tolerance, i.e., systemic acquired resistance (SAR) regulatory proteins (MININ-1-related) and salt tolerance homologs (STH), were reported to mediate the SAS response. By dissecting and comparing QTL effects from low- and high-density conditions, our results elucidate the genetic control of leaf formation in the context of the SAS response. The mechanism with leaf development × density interaction can further aid the development of density-tolerant crop varieties for agricultural practices.

Project description:Leaf traits are important indicators of plants' adaptive strategy to environmental changes. It is an established fact that leaf traits are jointly regulated by climatic and edaphic factors besides genetic factors. However, the relative importance of these abiotic forces in determining the general patterns of herbaceous plant leaf traits across different climatic regions in China is far from clear. We collected 1,653 observations of 542 species of herbaceous plant leaf traits including leaf mass per area, leaf nitrogen, and leaf phosphorus from 316 sampling sites across four climatic regions. We found that the leaf mass per area in the arid region was apparently larger than the others, whereas the smallest mass-based leaf nitrogen and mass-based leaf phosphorus were found in the humid region. Increased growing season temperature and evapotranspiration consistently promoted a conservative growth strategy indicated by higher relative benefit of leaf mass per area, especially in the arid region. Solar radiation in growing season promoted an acquisitive growth strategy indicated by higher relative benefits of mass-based leaf nitrogen and phosphorus in the humid region, but opposite patterns were found in the arid region and semi-humid region. Of all the soil nutrients including soil organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and available nitrogen, soil available nitrogen was the strongest predictor of relative benefits of leaf traits associated with a nutrient acquisitive strategy, except in the nutrient-rich semi-humid region. There was a relatively larger number of abiotic factors contributing to relative benefits of leaf traits in the arid and humid regions. We concluded that plant functionality could respond divergently to the same factor facing different habitat conditions. Moreover, the relative benefits of leaf traits tended to be more vulnerable to abiotic filtering in more stressful conditions. Our findings have important implications for understanding the context-dependency of plant functionality to environmental filtering and further improving the predictability of plant dynamics under global change.

Project description:IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging time for medical care, especially in the field of infectious diseases (ID), but it has also provided an opportunity to introduce new solutions in HIV management. Here, we investigated the changes in HIV service provision across Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries before and after the COVID-19 outbreak.MethodsThe Euroguidelines in Central and Eastern Europe Network Group consists of experts in the field of ID from 24 countries within the CEE region. Between 11 September and 29 September 2021, the group produced an on-line survey, consisting of 32 questions on models of care among HIV clinics before and after the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak.ResultsTwenty-three HIV centers from 19 countries (79.2% of all countries invited) participated in the survey. In 69.5% of the countries, there were more than four HIV centers, in three countries there were four centers (21%), and in four countries there was only one HIV center in each country. HIV care was based in ID hospitals plus out-patient clinics (52%), was centralized in big cities (52%), and was publicly financed (96%). Integrated services were available in 21 clinics (91%) with access to specialists other than ID, including psychologists in 71.5% of the centers, psychiatrists in 43%, gynecologists in 47.5%, dermatologists in 52.5%, and social workers in 62% of all clinics. Patient-centered care was provided in 17 centers (74%), allowing consultations and tests to be planned for the same day. Telehealth tools were used in 11 centers (47%) before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, and in 18 (78%) after (p = 0.36), but were represented mostly by consultations over the telephone or via e-mail. After the COVID-19 outbreak, telehealth was introduced as a new medical tool in nine centers (39%). In five centers (28%), no new services or tools were introduced.ConclusionsAs a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, tools such as telehealth have become popularized in CEE countries, challenging the traditional approach to HIV care. These implications need to be further evaluated in order to ascertain the best adaptations, especially for HIV medicine.
