Antiferromagnetic ordering in the TM-adsorbed AlN monolayer (TM = V and Cr).

ABSTRACT: In this work, the effects of transition metal (TM = V and Cr) adsorption on AlN monolayer electronic and magnetic properties are investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. TMs prefer to be adsorbed on-top of a bridge position as indicated by the calculated adsorption energy. V adatoms induce half-metallicity, while Cr adatoms metallize the monolayer. The magnetic properties are produced mainly by the V and Cr adatoms with magnetic moments of 3.72 and 4.53 μ _B, respectively. Further investigation indicates that antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering is energetically more favorable than ferromagnetic (FM) ordering. In both cases, the AFM state is stabilized upon increasing adatom coverage. The AlN monolayer becomes an AFM semiconductor with 0.5 ML of V adatom, and metallic nature is induced with 1.0 ML. Meanwhile, the degree of metallicity increases with increasing Cr adatoms. Results reported herein may provide a feasible new approach to functionalize AlN monolayers for spintronic applications.

Synthesis and Properties of Monolayer MnSe with Unusual Atomic Structure and Antiferromagnetic Ordering.

Project description:Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are a large family of 2D materials that are currently attracting intense interest. TMCs with 3d transition metals provide opportunities for introducing magnetism and strong correlations into the material with manganese standing out as a particularly attractive option due to its large magnetic moment. Here we report on the successful synthesis of monolayer manganese selenide on a NbSe2 substrate. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments and global structure prediction calculations at the density functional theory level, we identify the atomic structure and magnetic and electronic properties of the layered Mn2Se2 phase. The structure is similar to the layered bulk phase of CuI or a buckled bilayer of h-BN. Interestingly, our results suggest that the monolayer is antiferromagnetic, but with an unusual out-of-plane ordering that results in two ferromagnetic planes.

Suppression of magnetic ordering in XXZ-type antiferromagnetic monolayer NiPS3.

Project description:How a certain ground state of complex physical systems emerges, especially in two-dimensional materials, is a fundamental question in condensed-matter physics. A particularly interesting case is systems belonging to the class of XY Hamiltonian where the magnetic order parameter of conventional nature is unstable in two-dimensional materials leading to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Here, we report how the XXZ-type antiferromagnetic order of a magnetic van der Waals material, NiPS3, behaves upon reducing the thickness and ultimately becomes unstable in the monolayer limit. Our experimental data are consistent with the findings based on renormalization-group theory that at low temperatures a two-dimensional XXZ system behaves like a two-dimensional XY one, which cannot have a long-range order at finite temperatures. This work provides the experimental examination of the XY magnetism in the atomically thin limit and opens opportunities of exploiting these fundamental theorems of magnetism using magnetic van der Waals materials.

Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Boride TMB12 (TM = V, Cr, Mn, and Fe) Monolayers: Robust Antiferromagnetic Semiconductors with Large Magnetic Anisotropy.

Project description:Currently, two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic antiferromagnetism have stimulated research interest due to their insensitivity to external magnetic fields and absence of stray fields. Here, we predict a family of stable transition metal (TM) borides, TMB12 (TM = V, Cr, Mn, Fe) monolayers, by combining TM atoms and B12 icosahedra based on first-principles calculations. Our results show that the four TMB12 monolayers have stable antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground states with large magnetic anisotropic energy. Among them, three TMB12 (TM=V, Cr, Mn) monolayers display an in-plane easy magnetization axis, while the FeB12 monolayer has an out-of-plane easy magnetization axis. Among them, the CrB12 and the FeB12 monolayers are AFM semiconductors with band gaps of 0.13 eV and 0.35 eV, respectively. In particular, the AFM FeB12 monolayer is a spin-polarized AFM material with a Néel temperature of 125 K. Moreover, the electronic and magnetic properties of the CrB12 and the FeB12 monolayers can be modulated by imposing external biaxial strains. Our findings show that the TMB12 monolayers are candidates for designing 2D AFM materials, with potential applications in electronic devices.

Single-Exciton Photoluminescence in a GaN Monolayer inside an AlN Nanocolumn.

Project description:GaN/AlN heterostructures with thicknesses of one monolayer (ML) are currently considered to be the most promising material for creating UVC light-emitting devices. A unique functional property of these atomically thin quantum wells (QWs) is their ability to maintain stable excitons, resulting in a particularly high radiation yield at room temperature. However, the intrinsic properties of these excitons are substantially masked by the inhomogeneous broadening caused, in particular, by fluctuations in the QWs' thicknesses. In this work, to reduce this effect, we fabricated cylindrical nanocolumns of 50 to 5000 nm in diameter using GaN/AlN single QW heterostructures grown via molecular beam epitaxy while using photolithography with a combination of wet and reactive ion etching. Photoluminescence measurements in an ultrasmall QW region enclosed in a nanocolumn revealed that narrow lines of individual excitons were localized on potential fluctuations attributed to 2-3-monolayer-high GaN clusters, which appear in QWs with an average thickness of 1 ML. The kinetics of luminescence with increasing temperature is determined via the change in the population of localized exciton states. At low temperatures, spin-forbidden dark excitons with lifetimes of ~40 ns predominate, while at temperatures elevated above 120 K, the overlying bright exciton states with much faster recombination dynamics determine the emission.

Evidence of ferroelectricity in an antiferromagnetic vanadium trichloride monolayer.

Project description:A reduced dimensionality of multiferroic materials is highly desired for device miniaturization, but the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism at the two-dimensional limit is yet to be conclusively demonstrated. Here, we used a NbSe2 substrate to break both the C3 rotational and inversion symmetries in monolayer VCl3 and, thus, introduced exceptional in-plane ferroelectricity into a two-dimensional magnet. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy directly visualized ferroelectric domains and manipulated their domain boundaries in monolayer VCl3, where coexisting antiferromagnetic order with canted magnetic moments was verified by vibrating sample magnetometer measurements. Our density functional theory calculations highlight the crucial role that highly directional interfacial Cl-Se interactions play in breaking the symmetries and, thus, in introducing in-plane ferroelectricity, which was further verified by examining an ML-VCl3/graphene sample. Our work demonstrates an approach to manipulate the ferroelectric states in monolayered magnets through van der Waals interfacial interactions.

Phthalocyanine Adsorbed on Monolayer CrI3: Tailoring Their Magnetic Properties.

Project description:Metallo-phthalocyanines molecules, especially ironphthalocyanines (Fe-Pc), are often examined due to their rich chemical, magnetic, and optoelectronic features. Due to these, Fe-Pc molecules are promising for applications in gas sensors, field-effect transistors, organic LEDs, and data storage. Motivated by this potential, this study investigates Fe-Pc molecules adsorbed on a magnetic monolayer, CrI3. Using quantum-mechanical simulations, the aim of this work was to find pathways to selectively tune and engineer the magnetic and electronic properties of the molecules when they form hybrid complexes. The results quantitatively underline how adsorption alters the magnetic properties of the Fe-Pc molecules. Interestingly, the analysis points to changes in the molecular magnetic anisotropy when comparing the magnetic moment of the isolated molecule to that of the molecule/monolayer complex formed after adsorption. The presence of iodine vacancies was shown to enhance the magnetic interactions between the iron of the Fe-Pc molecule and the chromium of the monolayer. Our findings suggest ways to control oxygen capture-release properties through material choice and defect creation. Insights into the stability and charge density depletion on the molecule provide critical information for selective tuning of the magnetic properties and engineering of the functionalities of these molecule/material complexes.

Antiferromagnetic spin ordering in two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of SiP3.

Project description:Magnetism in low-dimensional materials has been of sustained interest due to its intriguing quantum mechanical origin and promising device applications. Here, we propose a buckled honeycomb lattice of stoichiometry SiP3, a two-dimensional binary group-IV and V material that exhibits an antiferromagnetic ground state with itinerant electrons. Here we perform elemental Si substitution in pristine blue phosphorene to downshift the Fermi energy and induce the Fermi instability that results in a spin polarized ground state. Within first-principles calculations, we observe antiferromagnetic spin alignment between adjacent ferromagnetic triangular domains where each Si atom is coupled with three neighboring P atoms with a ferromagnetic interaction. Such unique spin structure and resulting magnetic ground state are unprecedented in defect-free two-dimensional materials made of only p-block elements. This metal-free magnetism can be exploited for advanced spintronic and memory storage applications.

Glass-like recovery of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in a photo-excited manganite Pr₀.₇Ca₀.₃MnO₃.

Project description:Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward undertsanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr₀.₇Ca₀.₃MnO₃ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pump fluence to 3D at high pump fluence. This behavior arises from the metastable state created by photo-excitation, a state characterized by spin disordered metallic droplets within the larger charge- and spin-ordered insulating domains. Comparison with time-resolved resistivity measurements suggests that the collapse of spin ordering is correlated with the insulator-to-metal transition, but the recovery of the insulating phase does not depend on the re-establishment of the spin ordering.

Interfacial Confinement Effect of Self-Adsorbed Monolayer Enables Highly Reversible Zn Metal Anodes.

Project description:The practical applications of aqueous Zn metal batteries are promising, yet still impeded by the corrosion reactions and dendrite growth on the Zn metal anode. Here, a self-adsorbed monolayer (SAM) is designed to stabilize the Zn metal anode. Theory and experiment results show that the interfacial confinement effect of the SAM, for one thing, greatly suppresses the corrosion reactions through the H2O-poor inner Helmholtz plane because of the steric-hindrance effect, and for another, alleviates the Zn2+ concentration gradient on the anode surface through the Zn2+ enrichment behavior and eventually inhibits the dendrite growth. Consequently, the Zn||Cu cell maintains a Coulombic efficiency of 99.3% at 10 mA cm-2/1 mAh cm-2 for 2000 cycles, and the Zn||Zn cell can stably cycle for 1400 h at 1 mA cm-2/1 mAh cm-2. Additionally, the NVO||Zn pouch cell shows impressive cycling stability (over 200 cycles) and low gassing behavior at 3 A g-1. This work provides a novel perspective for the interface engineering of Zn metal anodes.

Co-adsorbed self-assembled monolayer enables high-performance perovskite and organic solar cells.

Project description:Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have become pivotal in achieving high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and organic solar cells (OSCs) by significantly minimizing interfacial energy losses. In this study, we propose a co-adsorb (CA) strategy employing a novel small molecule, 2-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)isonicotinic acid (PyCA-3F), introducing at the buried interface between 2PACz and the perovskite/organic layers. This approach effectively diminishes 2PACz's aggregation, enhancing surface smoothness and increasing work function for the modified SAM layer, thereby providing a flattened buried interface with a favorable heterointerface for perovskite. The resultant improvements in crystallinity, minimized trap states, and augmented hole extraction and transfer capabilities have propelled power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) beyond 25% in PSCs with a p-i-n structure (certified at 24.68%). OSCs employing the CA strategy achieve remarkable PCEs of 19.51% based on PM1:PTQ10:m-BTP-PhC6 photoactive system. Notably, universal improvements have also been achieved for the other two popular OSC systems. After a 1000-hour maximal power point tracking, the encapsulated PSCs and OSCs retain approximately 90% and 80% of their initial PCEs, respectively. This work introduces a facile, rational, and effective method to enhance the performance of SAMs, realizing efficiency breakthroughs in both PSCs and OSCs with a favorable p-i-n device structure, along with improved operational stability.
