Oxidation of Archean upper mantle caused by crustal recycling.

ABSTRACT: The redox evolution of Archean upper mantle impacted mantle melting and the nature of chemical equilibrium between mantle, ocean and atmosphere of the early Earth. Yet, the origin of these variations in redox remain controversial. Here we show that a global compilation of ∼3.8-2.5 Ga basalts can be subdivided into group B-1, showing modern mid-ocean ridge basalt-like features ((Nb/La)_PM ≥ 0.75), and B-2, which are similar to contemporary island arc-related basalts ((Nb/La)_PM < 0.75). Our V-Ti redox proxy indicates a more reducing upper mantle, and the results of both ambient and modified mantle obtained from B-1 and B-2 samples, respectively, exhibit a ∼1.0 log unit increase in their temporal evolution for most cratons. Increases in mantle oxygen fugacity are coincident with the changes in basalt Th/Nb ratios and Nd isotope ratios, indicating that crustal recycling played a crucial role, and this likely occurred either via plate subduction or lithospheric drips.

Ancient helium and tungsten isotopic signatures preserved in mantle domains least modified by crustal recycling.

Project description:Rare high-3He/4He signatures in ocean island basalts (OIB) erupted at volcanic hotspots derive from deep-seated domains preserved in Earth's interior. Only high-3He/4He OIB exhibit anomalous 182W-an isotopic signature inherited during the earliest history of Earth-supporting an ancient origin of high 3He/4He. However, it is not understood why some OIB host anomalous 182W while others do not. We provide geochemical data for the highest-3He/4He lavas from Iceland (up to 42.9 times atmospheric) with anomalous 182W and examine how Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotopic variations-useful for tracing subducted, recycled crust-relate to high 3He/4He and anomalous 182W. These data, together with data on global OIB, show that the highest-3He/4He and the largest-magnitude 182W anomalies are found only in geochemically depleted mantle domains-with high 143Nd/144Nd and low 206Pb/204Pb-lacking strong signatures of recycled materials. In contrast, OIB with the strongest signatures associated with recycled materials have low 3He/4He and lack anomalous 182W. These observations provide important clues regarding the survival of the ancient He and W signatures in Earth's mantle. We show that high-3He/4He mantle domains with anomalous 182W have low W and 4He concentrations compared to recycled materials and are therefore highly susceptible to being overprinted with low 3He/4He and normal (not anomalous) 182W characteristic of subducted crust. Thus, high 3He/4He and anomalous 182W are preserved exclusively in mantle domains least modified by recycled crust. This model places the long-term preservation of ancient high 3He/4He and anomalous 182W in the geodynamic context of crustal subduction and recycling and informs on survival of other early-formed heterogeneities in Earth's interior.

Barium isotope evidence for pervasive sediment recycling in the upper mantle.

Project description:The upper mantle, as sampled by mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs), exhibits significant chemical variability unrelated to mechanisms of melt extraction at ridges. We show that barium isotope variations in global MORBs vary systematically with radiogenic isotopes and trace element ratios, which reflects mixing between depleted and enriched MORB melts. In addition, modern sediments and enriched MORBs share similar Ba isotope signatures. Using modeling, we show that addition of ~0.1% by weight of sediment components into the depleted mantle in subduction zones must impart a sedimentary Ba signature to the overlying mantle and induce low-degree melting that produces the enriched MORB reservoir. Subsequently, these enriched domains convect toward mid-ocean ridges and produce radiogenic isotope variation typical of enriched MORBs. This mechanism can explain the chemical and isotopic features of enriched MORBs and provide strong evidence for pervasive sediment recycling in the upper mantle.

Archean phosphorus recycling facilitated by ultraviolet radiation.

Project description:Of the six elements incorporated into the major polymers of life, phosphorus is the least abundant on a global scale [E. Anders, M. Ebihara, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 46, 2363-2380 (1982)] and has been described as the "ultimate limiting nutrient" [T. Tyrrell, Nature 400, 525-531 (1999)]. In the modern ocean, the supply of dissolved phosphorus is predominantly sustained by the oxidative remineralization/recycling of organic phosphorus in seawater. However, in the Archean Eon (4 to 2.5 Ga), surface waters were anoxic and reducing. Here, we conducted photochemical experiments to test whether photodegradation of ubiquitous dissolved organic phosphorus could facilitate phosphorus recycling under the simulated Archean conditions. Our results strongly suggest that organic phosphorus compounds, which were produced by marine biota (e.g., adenosine monophosphate and phosphatidylserine) or delivered by meteorites (e.g., methyl phosphonate) can undergo rapid photodegradation and release inorganic phosphate into solution under anoxic conditions. Our experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that photodegradation of organic phosphorus could have been a significant source of bioavailable phosphorus in the early ocean and would have fueled primary production during the Archean eon.

Oxidation state of Cu in silicate melts at upper mantle conditions.

Project description:Beyond its economic value, copper (Cu) serves as a valuable tracer of deep magmatic processes due to its close relationship with magmatic sulfide evolution and sensitivity to oxygen fugacity (fO2). However, determining Cu's oxidation state (+ 1 or + 2) in silicate melts, crucial for interpreting its behavior and reconstructing fO2 in the Earth's interior, has long been a challenge. This study utilizes X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure spectroscopy to investigate the Cu oxidation state in hydrous mafic silicate melts equilibrated under diverse fO2 (- 1.8 to 3.1 log units relative to the Fayalite-Magnetite-Quartz buffer), temperature (1150-1300 °C), and pressure (1.0-2.5 GPa) conditions. Our results reveal that Cu predominantly exists as Cu+ across all fO2 conditions, with a minor Cu2+ component. This dominance of Cu+ persists even in relatively oxidized melts, highlighting its limited sensitivity to fO2 under upper mantle conditions. This significantly constrains the utility of Cu as an oxybarometer in hydrous silicate melts in the deep Earth. However, our findings suggest that Cu isotopes primarily reflect the interplay of sulfide segregation/accumulation during magmatic differentiation, shedding light on these fundamental processes in Earth's interior.

Archean cratonic mantle recycled at a mid-ocean ridge.

Project description:Basalts and mantle peridotites of mid-ocean ridges are thought to sample Earth's upper mantle. Osmium isotopes of abyssal peridotites uniquely preserve melt extraction events throughout Earth history, but existing records only indicate ages up to ~2 billion years (Ga) ago. Thus, the memory of the suspected large volumes of mantle lithosphere that existed in Archean time (>2.5 Ga) has apparently been lost somehow. We report abyssal peridotites with melt-depletion ages up to 2.8 Ga, documented by extremely unradiogenic 187Os/188Os ratios (to as low as 0.1095) and refractory major elements that compositionally resemble the deep keels of Archean cratons. These oceanic rocks were thus derived from the once-extensive Archean continental keels that have been dislodged and recycled back into the mantle, the feasibility of which we confirm with numerical modeling. This unexpected connection between young oceanic and ancient continental lithosphere indicates an underappreciated degree of compositional recycling over time.

Convective isolation of Hadean mantle reservoirs through Archean time.

Project description:Although Earth has a convecting mantle, ancient mantle reservoirs that formed within the first 100 Ma of Earth's history (Hadean Eon) appear to have been preserved through geologic time. Evidence for this is based on small anomalies of isotopes such as 182W, 142Nd, and 129Xe that are decay products of short-lived nuclide systems. Studies of such short-lived isotopes have typically focused on geological units with a limited age range and therefore only provide snapshots of regional mantle heterogeneities. Here we present a dataset for short-lived 182Hf-182W (half-life 9 Ma) in a comprehensive rock suite from the Pilbara Craton, Western Australia. The samples analyzed preserve a unique geological archive covering 800 Ma of Archean history. Pristine 182W signatures that directly reflect the W isotopic composition of parental sources are only preserved in unaltered mafic samples with near canonical W/Th (0.07 to 0.26). Early Paleoarchean, mafic igneous rocks from the East Pilbara Terrane display a uniform pristine µ182W excess of 12.6 ± 1.4 ppm. From ca 3.3Ga onward, the pristine 182W signatures progressively vanish and are only preserved in younger rocks of the craton that tap stabilized ancient lithosphere. Given that the anomalous 182W signature must have formed by ca 4.5 Ga, the mantle domain that was tapped by magmatism in the Pilbara Craton must have been convectively isolated for nearly 1.2 Ga. This finding puts lower bounds on timescale estimates for localized convective homogenization in early Earth's interior and on the widespread emergence of plate tectonics that are both important input parameters in many physical models.

Arc accretion and crustal reworking from late Archean to Neoproterozoic in Northeast Brazil.

Project description:New systematic Nd isotope and U-Pb geochronology data were applied to Precambrian rocks of northeastern Brazil to produce a crustal-age distribution map for a small basement inlier (1,500 km2). The results support episodic crustal growth with five short periods of crustal formation at ca. 2.9 Ga, 2.65 Ga, 2.25 Ga, 2.0 Ga, and 0.6 Ga. Based on the frequency histogram of U-Pb zircon ages and Nd isotopic data, we suggest that about 60% of the continental crust was formed during the Archean between 2.9 Ga and 2.65 Ga. The remaining 40% of crust was generated during the Rhyacian to Neoproterozoic (~2.0-0.6 Ga). This overall continental growth is manifested by accretionary processes that involved successive accretions surrounding an older core, becoming younger toward the margin. Strikingly, this repetitive history of terrane accretion show a change from lithospheric peeling dominated accretionary setting during the late Archean to a more, modern-day akin style of arc-accretion during the Proterozoic. Similar tectonic processes are observed only in large continental areas (>1,000,000 km2) as in the North American continent basement and in the Amazonian Craton.

Project description:The mechanism that causes the rapid uplift and active magmatism of the Hoh-Xil Basin in the northern Tibetan Plateau and hence the outward growth of the proto-plateau is highly debated, more specifically, over the relationship between deep dynamics and surface uplift. Until recently the Hoh-Xil Basin remained uncovered by seismic networks due to inaccessibility. Here, based on linear seismic arrays across the Hoh-Xil Basin, we present a three-dimensional S-wave velocity (VS) model of the crust and uppermost mantle structure beneath the Tibetan Plateau from ambient noise tomography. This model exhibits a widespread partially molten crust in the northern Tibetan Plateau but only isolated pockets in the south manifested as low-VS anomalies in the middle crust. The spatial correlation of the widespread low-VS anomalies with strong uppermost mantle low-VS anomalies and young exposed magmatic rocks in the Hoh-Xil Basin suggests that the plateau grew through lithospheric mantle removal and its driven magmatism.

Evolution of the Crustal and Upper Mantle Seismic Structure From 0-27 Ma in the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean at 2° 43'S.

Project description:We present seismic tomographic results from a unique seismic refraction and wide-angle survey along a 600 km long flow-line corridor of oceanic lithosphere ranging in age from 0 to 27 Ma in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean at 2° 43'S. The velocities in the crust near the ridge axis rapidly increase in the first 6 Myr and then change gradually with age. The upper crust (Layer 2) thickness varies between 2 and 2.4 km with an average thickness of 2.2 km and the crustal thickness varies from 5.6 to 6 km along the profile with an average crustal thickness of 5.8 km. At some locations, we observe negative velocity anomalies (∼-0.3 km/s) in the lower crust which could be either due to chemical heterogeneity in gabbroic rocks and/or the effects of fault related deformation zones leading to an increase in porosities up to 1.6% depending on the pore/crack geometry. The existence of a low velocity anomaly beneath the ridge axis suggests the presence of partial melt (∼1.3%) in the lower crust. Upper mantle velocities also remain low (∼7.8 km/s) from ridge axis up to 5 Ma, indicating a high temperature regime associated with mantle melting zone underneath. These results suggest that the evolution of the crust and uppermost mantle at this location occur in the first 10 Ma of its formation and then remains unchanged. Most of the structures in the older crust and upper mantle are fossilized structures and could provide information about past processes at ocean spreading centers.

Crustal thickening and endogenic oxidation of magmatic sulfur.

Project description:Porphyry ore deposits, Earth's most important resources of copper, molybdenum, and rhenium, are strongly associated with felsic magmas showing signs of high-pressure differentiation and are usually found in places with thickened crust (>45 kilometers). This pattern is well-known, but unexplained, and remains an outstanding problem in our understanding of porphyry ore deposit formation. We approach this problem by investigating the oxidation state of magmatic sulfur, which controls the behavior of ore-forming metals during magma differentiation and magmatic-hydrothermal transition. We use sulfur in apatite to reconstruct the sulfur oxidation state in the Gangdese batholith, southern Tibet. We find that magma sulfate content increased abruptly after India-Eurasia collision. Apatite sulfur content and the calculated magma S6+/ΣS ratio correlate with whole-rock dysprosium/ytterbium ratio, suggesting that residual garnet, favored in thickened crust, exerts a first-order control on sulfur oxidation in magmatic orogens. Our findings link sulfur oxidation to internal petrogenic processes and imply an intrinsic relationship of magma oxidation with synmagmatic crustal thickening.
