Synthesis of Si-Ge Nanosheets and Their Dispersion of Organic Solvents with Focus on the Hansen Solubility Parameters.

ABSTRACT: Two-dimensional (2D) materials combine the collective advantages of individual building blocks and synergistic properties and have spurred great interest as a new paradigm in materials science. Especially, exfoliation of 2D semiconductive materials into nanosheets is of significance for both fundamental and potential applications. In this report, silicon-germanium (Si-Ge) nanosheets were synthesized by sonication of porous Si-Ge powder. The raw material Si-Ge powder was obtained by leaching Li from Li₁₃Si₂Ge₂ with ethanol; after that, it was crystallized by heat treatment at 500 °C. The thickness and the lateral size of the exfoliated Si-Ge nanosheets were about 3 nm and a few microns, respectively. The nanosheets were dispersed in 55 different organic solvents, and their Hansen solubility parameters were calculated and compared with those of the end member (Si and Ge) nanosheets and graphene.

Revisiting Hansen Solubility Parameters by Including Thermodynamics.

Project description:The Hansen solubility parameter approach is revisited by implementing the thermodynamics of dissolution and mixing. Hansen's pragmatic approach has earned its spurs in predicting solvents for polymer solutions, but for molecular solutes improvements are needed. By going into the details of entropy and enthalpy, several corrections are suggested that make the methodology thermodynamically sound without losing its ease of use. The most important corrections include accounting for the solvent molecules' size, the destruction of the solid's crystal structure, and the specificity of hydrogen-bonding interactions, as well as opportunities to predict the solubility at extrapolated temperatures. Testing the original and the improved methods on a large industrial dataset including solvent blends, fit qualities improved from 0.89 to 0.97 and the percentage of correct predictions rose from 54 % to 78 %. Full Matlab scripts are included in the Supporting Information, allowing readers to implement these improvements on their own datasets.

Pencil and Paper Estimation of Hansen Solubility Parameters.

Project description:Simple procedures to estimate Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) components from structural formulas are investigated. The best results are obtained using a simple relationship with molar volume and refractivity for the dispersion component, and using additivity models based on tailored fragments specifically designed for the polar and hydrogen bonding components. Despite large errors for some classes of chemicals, including small inorganic molecules, ionic liquids, and high halogen compounds, these models yield average absolute deviations from reference on par with state-of-the-art models and lower than reported using molecular dynamics simulations or nonlinear quantitative structure-property relationship models based on a limited set of quantum chemical descriptors. In contrast to group contribution methods that are either more restricted in scope or heavily parameterized, they are thoroughly validated and very easy to apply. Furthermore, the errors observed are easy to rationalize and may usually be anticipated. This work sheds light on some limitations inherent to pure additivity approaches for HSP prediction and provides a first step toward better models. A Python script implementing the procedure and the fully detailed results are provided as the Supporting Information.

Hansen Solubility Parameters Applied to the Extraction of Phytochemicals.

Project description:In many analytical chemical procedures, organic solvents are required to favour a better global yield upon the separation, extraction, or isolation of the target phytochemical analyte. The selection of extraction solvents is generally based on the solubility difference between target analytes and the undesired matrix components, as well as the overall extraction procedure cost and safety. Hansen Solubility Parameters are typically used for this purpose. They are based on the product of three coordinated forces (hydrogen bonds, dispersion, and dipolar forces) calculated for any substance to predict the miscibility of a compound in a pure solvent, in a mixture of solvents, or in non-solvent compounds, saving time and costs on method development based on a scientific understanding of chemical composition and intermolecular interactions. This review summarises how Hansen Solubility Parameters have been incorporated into the classical and emerging (or greener) extraction techniques of phytochemicals as an alternative to trial-and-error approaches, avoiding impractical experimental conditions and resulting in, for example, saving resources and avoiding unnecessary solvent wasting.

Experimentally Determined Hansen Solubility Parameters of Biobased and Biodegradable Polyesters.

Project description:Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) of 15 commercially relevant biobased and biodegradable polyesters were experimentally determined by applying a novel approach to the classic solubility study method. In this approach, the extent of swelling in polymer films was determined using a simple equation based on the mass difference between swollen and nonswollen film samples to obtain normalized solvent uptake (N). Using N and HSPiP software, highly accurate HSP values were obtained for all 15 polyesters. Qualitative evaluation of the HSP values was conducted by predicting the miscibility of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol % HHx) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with a novel lignin-based plasticizer (ethyl 3-(4-ethoxy-3-methoxyphenyl)propanoate, EP) with a relative energy difference (RED) less than 0.4. Additionally, an HSP-predicted plasticizer (di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, DA) with a larger RED (>0.7) was used to demonstrate the effects of less-miscible additives. Plasticized samples were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy (POM) to determine the Tg depression, with EP showing linear Tg depression up to 50% plasticizer loading, whereas DA shows minimal Tg depression past 10% loading. Further analysis by POM reveals that the DA phase separates from both polymers at loadings as low as 2.5% (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol % HHx) and 5% (PLA), while the EP phase separates at a much higher loading of 50% (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol% HHx) and 30% (PLA).

Hansen Solubility Parameters of Stacked Silicanes Derived from Porous Silicon.

Project description:Exfoliated nanomaterials could spur great interest as a new paradigm in materials science. Therefore, we have sought organic solvents to obtain high-quality two-dimensional nanomaterials and enable their adoption in large-scale applications. However, recent approaches in liquid-phase exfoliation are based on empirical trial-and-error strategies. Here, we show that the dispersibility of stacked silicanes is discussed on the basis of Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs). Using these parameters, we demonstrate that silicanes can be efficiently dispersed in bromonaphthalene and can be exfoliated as individual sheets (1-6 nm in thickness and up to 2 μm2 in area). During the exfoliation process, the oxidation state of the obtained sheets is affected by the nature of the solvents. Furthermore, HSPs of the stacked silicanes are compared with those of graphene and hydrogen-terminated germanane.

Solubility Data of the Bioactive Compound Piperine in (Transcutol + Water) Mixtures: Computational Modeling, Hansen Solubility Parameters and Mixing Thermodynamic Parameters.

Project description:The solubility values and thermodynamic parameters of a natural phytomedicine/nutrient piperine (PPN) in Transcutol-HP (THP) + water combinations were determined. The mole fraction solubilities (xe) of PPN in THP + water combinations were recorded at T = 298.2-318.2 K and p = 0.1 MPa by the shake flask method. Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) of PPN, pure THP, pure water and THP + water mixtures free of PPN were also computed. The xe values of PPN were correlated well with "Apelblat, Van't Hoff, Yalkowsky-Roseman, Jouyban-Acree and Jouyban-Acree-Van't Hoff" models with root mean square deviations of < 2.0%. The maximum and minimum xe value of PPN was found in pure THP (9.10 × 10-2 at T = 318.2 K) and pure water (1.03 × 10-5 at T = 298.2 K), respectively. In addition, HSP of PPN was observed more closed with that of pure THP. The thermodynamic parameters of PPN were obtained using the activity coefficient model. The results showed an endothermic dissolution of PPN at m = 0.6-1.0 in comparison to other THP + water combinations studied. In addition, PPN dissolution was recorded as entropy-driven at m = 0.8-1.0 compared with other THP + water mixtures evaluated.

Morphologies in Solvent-Annealed Clotrimazole Thin Films Explained by Hansen-Solubility Parameters.

Project description:The induction of different crystal morphologies is of crucial importance for many applications. In this work, the preparation of various crystal morphologies within clotrimazole films on glass substrates is demonstrated. Amorphous clotrimazole thin films were transformed via vapor annealing into crystalline structures; highly monodisperse/multidisperse crystallites, spherulite, or dendritic structures were obtained as the solvent was exchanged. X-ray diffraction experiments reveal that the same polymorph is present for all samples but with varying texture. The achieved morphologies are explained in terms of Hansen-solubility parameters and vapor pressures; thus, the different morphologies and crystal orientations can be explained by solvent-solid interaction strengths within the thin film samples.

Solubility Measurement and Various Solubility Parameters of Glipizide in Different Neat Solvents.

Project description:Glipizide (GLZ) is an oral hypoglycemic agent, which is a weakly aqueous soluble drug. The solubility values of GLZ in various neat solvents are scarce in the literature. Hence, the solubility of GLZ in 12 different neat solvents, namely, "water, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol (IPA), 1-butanol, 2-butanol, ethylene glycol (EG), propylene glycol (PG), poly(ethylene glycol)-400 (PEG-400), ethyl acetate (EA), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and Transcutol-HP (THP)", at "T = 298.2-318.2 K" and "p = 0.1 MPa" was measured. The recorded solubilities of GLZ were correlated by "van't Hoff and Apelblat models" using root-mean-square deviation (RMSD). The overall RMSD was obtained as 1.21 and 1.40% for "Apelblat and van't Hoff models", respectively. Different solubility parameters of all studied materials including drug and solvent were calculated to find the best solvent for GLZ. The solubilities of GLZ (expressed in mole fraction) have been found highest in DMSO (2.81 × 10-2), followed by THP, EA, 2-butanol, 1-butanol, IPA, PEG-400, ethanol, PG, methanol, EG, and water (1.98 × 10-4) at "T = 318.2 K". All investigated solubility parameters of GLZ were recorded very close to the DMSO. "Apparent thermodynamic analysis" showed an "endothermic and entropy-driven dissolution" of GLZ in the 12 different neat solvents. The highest molecular interactions were recorded in GLZ-DMSO compared to other combinations. Overall, DMSO has been considered as the best solvent for the solubilization of GLZ.

Correlation between Physical Properties of 12-Hydroxystearic Acid Organogels and Hansen Solubility Parameters.

Project description:The Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) is a useful index for reasoning the gelation behavior of low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs). However, the conventional HSP-based methods only "classify" solvents that can and cannot form gels and require many trials to achieve this. For engineering purposes, quantitative estimation of gel properties using the HSP is highly desired. In this study, we measured critical gelation concentrations based on three distinct definitions, mechanical strength, and light transmittance of organogels prepared with 12-hydroxystearic acid (12HSA) and correlated them with the HSP of solvents. The results demonstrated that the mechanical strength, in particular, strongly correlated with the distance of 12HSA and solvent in the HSP space. Additionally, the results indicated that the constant volume-based concentration should be used when comparing the properties of organogels to a different solvent. These findings are helpful in efficiently determining the gelation sphere of new LMWGs in HSP space and contribute to designing organogels with tunable physical properties.
