Project description:The isolation of simple, fundamentally important, and highly reactive organometallic compounds remains among the most challenging tasks in synthetic chemistry. The detailed characterization of such compounds is key to the discovery of novel bonding scenarios and reactivity. The dimethylbismuth cation, [BiMe2 (SbF6 )] (1), has been isolated and characterized. Its reaction with BiMe3 gives access to an unprecedented dative bond, a Bi→Bi donor-acceptor interaction. The exchange of methyl groups (arguably the simplest hydrocarbon moiety) between different metal atoms is among the most principal types of reactions in organometallic chemistry. The reaction of 1 with BiMe3 enables an SE 2(back)-type methyl exchange, which is, for the first time, investigated in detail for isolable, (pseudo-)homoleptic main-group compounds.

Project description:Double deprotonation of the diamine 1,1'-(tBuCH2 NH)-ferrocene (1-H2 ) by alkaline-earth (Ae) or EuII metal reagents gave the complexes 1-Ae (Ae=Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) and 1-Eu. 1-Mg crystallized as a monomer while the heavier complexes crystallized as dimers. The Fe⋅⋅⋅Mg distance in 1-Mg is too long for a bonding interaction, but short Fe⋅⋅⋅Ae distances in 1-Ca, 1-Sr, and 1-Ba clearly support intramolecular Fe⋅⋅⋅Ae bonding. Further evidence for interactions is provided by a tilting of the Cp rings and the related 1 H NMR chemical-shift difference between the Cp α and β protons. While electrochemical studies are complicated by complex decomposition, UV/Vis spectral features of the complexes support Fe→Ae dative bonding. A comprehensive bonding analysis of all 1-Ae complexes shows that the heavier species 1-Ca, 1-Sr, and 1-Ba possess genuine Fe→Ae bonds which involve vacant d-orbitals of the alkaline-earth atoms and partially filled d-orbitals on Fe. In 1-Mg, a weak Fe→Mg donation into vacant p-orbitals of the Mg atom is observed.

Project description:With fs time, speed, and angular resolution of the elementary steps in electron transfer reactions, we report direct observation of reversible and dissociative processes for dative bonding involving covalent and ionic characters. For bimolecular reactions of various donors and acceptors we find strong correlation between the structure and the dynamics. The dynamics from the transition state to final products involve two elementary processes, with different reaction times, speed, and angular distributions. For example, for the R2S.I2 (R = C2H5) system, it is shown that after charge separation, the reversible electron transfer occurs in less than 150 fs (fastest trajectory) and is followed by the rupture of the I-I bond with the release of the first I-atom in 510 fs. However, the second process of the remaining and trapped I-atom takes 1.15 ps with its speed (500 m/s) being much smaller than the first one (1,030 m/s). The S-I-I average angle is 130 degrees. These findings, on this and the other systems reported here, elucidate the mechanism and address some concepts of nonconcertedness, caging, and restricted energy redistribution.

Project description:Reaction of [U{C(SiMe3 )(PPh2 )}(BIPM)(?-Cl)Li(TMEDA)(?-TMEDA)0.5 ]2 (BIPM=C(PPh2 NSiMe3 )2 ; TMEDA=Me2 NCH2 CH2 NMe2 ) with [Rh(?-Cl)(COD)]2 (COD=cyclooctadiene) affords the heterotrimetallic UIV -RhI2 complex [U(Cl)2 {C(PPh2 NSiMe3 )(PPh[C6 H4 ]NSiMe3 )}{Rh(COD)}{Rh(CH(SiMe3 )(PPh2 )}]. This complex has a very short uranium-rhodium distance, the shortest uranium-rhodium bond on record and the shortest actinide-transition metal bond in terms of formal shortness ratio. Quantum-chemical calculations reveal a remarkable RhI?? UIV net double dative bond interaction, involving RhI 4dz2 - and 4dxy/xz -type donation into vacant UIV 5f orbitals, resulting in a Wiberg/Nalewajski-Mrozek U-Rh bond order of 1.30/1.44, respectively. Despite being, formally, purely dative, the uranium-rhodium bonding interaction is the most substantial actinide-metal multiple bond yet prepared under conventional experimental conditions, as confirmed by structural, magnetic, and computational analyses.

Project description:Inspired by the repair of DNA through efficient reformation of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), herein we report a facile one-step approach to construction of self-healing antifogging thin films on the basis of partly cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) and poly(acrylic acid)(PAA). By designing the molar ratio of hydroxyl groups to carboxyl groups, the cross-linked polymer thin films maintain abundant free hydroxyl groups to present excellent antifogging property, which is derived from the hydrophilicity and hygroscopicity of the thin films. The thin films showed smart intrinsic self-healing characteristics towards wounds caused by external forces, which is attributed to sufficient free hydroxyl groups at the scratched interfaces to reform H-bonds across the interfaces and a sufficient chain mobility that is indispensable for chain diffusion across the interfaces and hydroxyl groups association to form H-bonds. No synthetic surfaces reported so far possess all the unique characteristics of the polymer thin films: intrinsic self-healing, long-term antifogging, excellent mechanical property, high transmittance and large-scale feasibility.

Project description:To realize the large-scale application of fuel cells, it is still a great challenge to improve the performance and reduce the cost of cathode catalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, carbon-supported ordered Pt3Mn intermetallic catalysts were prepared by thermal annealing electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibers containing Platinum(II) acetylacetonate/ Manganese(III) acetylacetonate. Compared with its counterparts, the ordered Pt3Mn intermetallic obtained at 950 °C exhibits a more positive half-potential and higher kinetic current density during the ORR process. Benefiting from their defined stoichiometry and crystal structure, the Mn atoms in Pt3Mn intermetallic can modulate well the geometric and electronic structure of surface Pt atoms, endowing Pt3Mn catalyst with an enhanced ORR catalytic activity. Moreover, it also has a better catalytic stability and methanol tolerance than commercial Pt/C catalyst. Our study provides a new strategy to fabricate a highly active and durable Pt3Mn intermetallic electrocatalyst towards ORR.

Project description:We previously reported the synthesis and preliminary characterization of a unique series of low-spin (ls) {FeNO}8-10 complexes supported by an ambiphilic trisphosphineborane ligand, [Fe(TPB)(NO)]+/0/-. Herein, we use advanced spectroscopic techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to extract detailed information as to how the bonding changes across the redox series. We find that, in spite of the highly reduced nature of these complexes, they feature an NO+ ligand throughout with strong Fe-NO π-backbonding and essentially closed-shell electronic structures of their FeNO units. This is enabled by an Fe-B interaction that is present throughout the series. In particular, the most reduced [Fe(TPB)(NO)]- complex, an example of a ls-{FeNO}10 species, features a true reverse dative Fe → B bond where the Fe center acts as a strong Lewis-base. Hence, this complex is in fact electronically similar to the ls-{FeNO}8 system, with two additional electrons "stored" on site in an Fe-B single bond. The outlier in this series is the ls-{FeNO}9 complex, due to spin polarization (quantified by pulse EPR spectroscopy), which weakens the Fe-NO bond. These data are further contextualized by comparison with a related N2 complex, [Fe(TPB)(N2)]-, which is a key intermediate in Fe(TPB)-catalyzed N2 fixation. Our present study finds that the Fe → B interaction is key for storing the electrons needed to achieve a highly reduced state in these systems, and highlights the pitfalls associated with using geometric parameters to try to evaluate reverse dative interactions, a finding with broader implications to the study of transition metal complexes with boratrane and related ligands.

Project description:Despite the fact that non-aqueous uranium chemistry is over 60 years old, most polarised-covalent uranium-element multiple bonds involve formal uranium oxidation states IV, V, and VI. The paucity of uranium(III) congeners is because, in common with metal-ligand multiple bonding generally, such linkages involve strongly donating, charge-loaded ligands that bind best to electron-poor metals and inherently promote disproportionation of uranium(III). Here, we report the synthesis of hexauranium-methanediide nanometre-scale rings. Combined experimental and computational studies suggest overall the presence of formal uranium(III) and (IV) ions, though electron delocalisation in this Kramers system cannot be definitively ruled out, and the resulting polarised-covalent U = C bonds are supported by iodide and δ-bonded arene bridges. The arenes provide reservoirs that accommodate charge, thus avoiding inter-electronic repulsion that would destabilise these low oxidation state metal-ligand multiple bonds. Using arenes as electronic buffers could constitute a general synthetic strategy by which to stabilise otherwise inherently unstable metal-ligand linkages.

Project description:The water-splitting photo-catalysis by carbon nitride heterocycles has been the subject of recent theoretical investigations, revealing a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction from the H-bonded water molecule to the CN-heterocycle. In this context, a detailed characterization of the water-catalyst binding configuration becomes mandatory in order to validate and possibly improve the theoretical modeling. To this aim, we built a well-defined surface-supported water/catalyst interface by adsorbing water under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions on a monolayer of melamine grown on the Cu(111) surface. By combining X-ray photoemission (XPS) and absorption (NEXAFS) spectroscopy we observed that melamine adsorbed onto copper is strongly tilted off the surface, with one amino group dangling to the vacuum side. The binding energy (BE) of the corresponding N 1s component is significantly higher compared to other N 1s contributions and displays a clear shift to lower BE as water is adsorbed. This finding along with density functional theory (DFT) results reveals that two adjacent melamine molecules concurrently work for stabilizing the H-bonded water-catalyst complex: one melamine acting as a H-donor via the amino-N (NH⋯OHH) and another one as a H-acceptor via the triazine-N (C[double bond, length as m-dash]N⋯HOH).

Project description:The single-step syngas-to-dimethyl ether (STD) process entails economic and technical advantages over the current industrial two-step process. Pd/ZnO-based catalysts have recently emerged as interesting alternatives to currently used Cu/ZnO/Al2 O3 catalysts, but the nature of the active site(s), the reaction mechanism, and the role of Pd and ZnO in the solid catalyst are not well established. Now, Zn-stabilized Pd colloids with a size of 2 nm served as the key building blocks for the methanol active component in bifunctional Pd/ZnO-γ-Al2 O3 catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by combining high-pressure operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The enhanced stability, longevity, and high dimethyl ether selectivity observed makes Pd/ZnO-γ-Al2 O3 an effective alternative system for the STD process compared to Cu/ZnO/γ-Al2 O3 .
