Project description:Mn-doped CeO2 and CeO2 with the same morphology (nanofiber and nanocube) have been synthesized through hydrothermal method. When applied to benzene oxidation, the catalytic performance of Mn-doped CeO2 is better than that of CeO2, due to the difference of the concentration of O vacancy. Compared to CeO2 with the same morphology, more oxygen vacancies were generated on the surface of Mn-doped CeO2, due to the replacement of Ce ion with Mn ion. The lattice replacement has been analyzed through XRD, Raman, electron energy loss spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance technology. The formation energies of oxygen vacancy on the different exposed crystal planes such as (110) and (100) for Mn-doped CeO2 were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT). The results show that the oxygen vacancy is easier to be formed on the (110) plane. Other factors influencing catalytic behavior have also been investigated, indicating that the surface oxygen vacancy plays a crucial role in catalytic reaction.

Project description:A new SnO2/CeO2 nano-composite catalyst was synthesized, characterized and used for the removal of alizarin dyes from aqueous solutions. The composite material was prepared using a precipitation method. X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methodology (BET) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) were utilized for the characterization of the prepared composite. The prepared nano-composite revealed high affinity for the adsorption and decomposition of alizarin dyes. The adsorption capacity under different experimental conditions (adsorbate concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose and pH) was examined. Under optimized experimental conditions, the removal of alizarin yellow, alizarin red and alizarin-3-methylimino-diacetic acid dyes from aqueous solutions was about 96.4%,87.8% and 97.3%, respectively. The adsorption isotherms agreed with the models of Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms.

Project description:Strain has been widely recognized as important for tuning the behavior of defects in metal oxides since properties such as defect configuration, electronic structure, excess charge localization, and local atomic distortions may be affected by surface strain. In CeO2, the most widely used promoter in three-way catalysts and solid state electrolyte in fuel cells, the behaviors of oxygen vacancies, and associated Ce3+ polarons are crucial in applications. Recent STM and AFM investigations as well as DFT-based calculations have indicated that in the near-surface of CeO2 (111), at low temperatures and vacancy concentrations, subsurface oxygen vacancies are more stable than surface ones, and the Ce3+ ions are next-nearest neighbors to both types of vacancies, which can be explained by the better ability of the system to relax the lattice strain induced by vacancy formation as well as by the excess charge localization. The results also revealed that the interaction between first-neighbor vacancies is repulsive. In this work, the relative stability of surface and subsurface oxygen vacancies at the CeO2 (111) surface under in-plane strain is investigated by means of DFT+U calculations. The tensile strain favors isolated surface vacancies with next nearest neighbor polarons, whereas isolated subsurface vacancies with nearest neighbor polarons are energetically favored under compressive strain. In addition, the formation of both surface and subsurface dimers is favored over having corresponding isolated species under compressive strain, which implies the possibility of controlling the formation of vacancy clusters using strain. In many applications, ceria is employed as a supported thin film or within a heterostructure in which ceria can be strained, and this study shows that strain can be a useful handle to tune properties of such materials.

Project description:Tin oxide nanorods (NRs) are vapour synthesised at relatively lower temperatures than previously reported and without the need for substrate pre-treatment, via a vapour-solid mechanism enabled using an aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition method. Results demonstrate that the growth of SnO2 NRs is promoted by a compression of the nucleation rate parallel to the substrate and a decrease of the energy barrier for growth perpendicular to the substrate, which are controlled via the deposition conditions. This method provides both single-step formation of the SnO2 NRs and their integration with silicon micromachined platforms, but also allows for in-situ functionalization of the NRs with gold nanoparticles via co-deposition with a gold precursor. The functional properties are demonstrated for gas sensing, with microsensors using functionalised NRs demonstrating enhanced sensing properties towards H2 compared to those based on non-functionalised NRs.

Project description:Defect-rich photocatalytic materials with excellent charge transfer properties are very popular. Herein, Sm-doped CeO2 nanorods were annealed in a N2 atmosphere to obtain the defective Sm-doped CeO2 photocatalysts (Vo-Sm-CeO2). The morphology and structure of Vo-Sm-CeO2 were systematically characterized. The Vo-Sm-CeO2 nanorods demonstrated an excellent photodegradation performance of methyl blue under visible light irradiation compared to CeO2 nanorods and Sm-CeO2. Reactive oxygen species including OH, ·O2-, and h+ were confirmed to play a pivotal role in the removal of pollutants via electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Doping Sm enhances the conductivity of CeO2 nanorods, benefiting photogenerated electrons being removed from the surface reactive sites, resulting in the superior performance.

Project description:Nanoparticles exhibiting both magnetic and luminescent properties are need of the hour for many biological applications. A single compound exhibiting this combination of properties is uncommon. Herein, we report a strategy to synthesize a bifunctional luminomagnetic Gd2-xEuxO3 (x?=?0.05 to 0.5) nanorod, with a diameter of ~20?nm and length in ~0.6??m, using hydrothermal method. Gd2O3:Eu(3+) nanorods have been characterized by studying its structural, optical and magnetic properties. The advantage offered by photoluminescent imaging with Gd2O3:Eu(3+) nanorods is that this ultrafine nanorod material exhibits hypersensitive intense red emission (610?nm) with good brightness (quantum yield more than 90%), which is an essential parameter for high-contrast bioimaging, especially for overcoming auto fluorescent background. The utility of luminomagnetic nanorods for biological applications in high-contrast cell imaging capability and cell toxicity to image two human breast cancer cell lines T47D and MDA-MB-231 are also evaluated. Additionally, to understand the significance of shape of the nanostructure, the photoluminescence and paramagnetic characteristic of Gd2O3:Eu(3+) nanorods were compared with the spherical nanoparticles of Gd2O3:Eu(3+).

Project description:In this work, manganese oxide with a 3 × 3 tunnel structure was synthesized. Mg-todorokite was treated with HNO3 to obtain H-todorokite, which was used as an electrode for adsorption of Cs+ from aqueous solution by an electrochemical reaction. H-todorokite was electrochemically reduced to lower oxidation state to enhance its negative charge and simultaneously increase the amount of cations because of the charge compensation. The Cs+ adsorption on H-todorokite was completed by a coupled electrochemical reaction (the redox reaction between Mn3+ and Mn4+) and an ion-exchange reaction between Cs+ and H+ ions. Cyclic voltammetry measurements at different pHs and Cs+ concentrations were performed. H-todorokite revealed high electrochemical adsorption capacity for Cs+ because of the high crystallinity and stability of the materials, which reached 6.0 mmol g-1 in 0.1 mol·L-1 Na2SO4 solution.

Project description:While it has been shown that high aspect ratio nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes and TiO(2) nanowires can induce toxicity by acting as fiber-like substances that damage the lysosome, it is not clear what the critical lengths and aspect ratios are that induce this type of toxicity. To answer this question, we synthesized a series of cerium oxide (CeO(2)) nanorods and nanowires with precisely controlled lengths and aspect ratios. Both phosphate and chloride ions were shown to play critical roles in obtaining these high aspect ratio nanostructures. High-resolution TEM analysis shows that single-crystalline CeO(2) nanorods/nanowires were formed along the [211] direction by an "oriented attachment" mechanism, followed by Ostwald ripening. The successful creation of a comprehensive CeO(2) nanorod/nanowire combinatorial library allows, for the first time, the systematic study of the effect of aspect ratio on lysosomal damage, cytotoxicity, and IL-1? production by the human myeloid cell line (THP-1). This in vitro toxicity study demonstrated that, at lengths ?200 nm and aspect ratios ?22, CeO(2) nanorods induced progressive pro-inflammatory effects and cytotoxicity. The relatively low "critical" length and aspect ratio were associated with small nanorod/nanowire diameters (6-10 nm), which facilitates the formation of stacking bundles due to strong van der Waals and dipole-dipole attractions. Our results suggest that both length and diameter components of aspect ratio should be considered when addressing the cytotoxic effects of high aspect ratio materials.

Project description:Environmental pollution is a major threat that increases day by day due to various activities. A wide variety of organic pollutants enter the environment due to petrochemical activities. Organic contamination can be unsafe, oncogenic, and lethal. Due to environmental issues worldwide, scientists and research communities are focusing their research efforts on this area. For the removal of toxic organic pollutants from the environment, photocatalysis-assisted degradation processes have gained more attention than other advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this manuscript, we report a novel photocatalysis of copper and lanthanum incorporating cerium oxide (CeO2) loaded on graphene oxide (Cu/La/CeO2/GO) nanocomposites successfully synthesized by hydrothermal techniques. XRD results showed the presence of dopant ions and a crystalline structure. FESEM images showed that the surface morphology of the synthesized nanocomposites formed a rod-like structure. The highlight of this study is the in-situ synthesis of the novel Cu/La/CeO2/GO nanocomposites, which manifest higher photodegradation of harmful organic dyes (Rhodamine B (RhB), Sunset Yellow (SY), and Cibacron Red (CR)). In Cu/La/CeO2/GO nanocomposites, the dopant materials restrict the rapid recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and enhance the photocatalytic activity. The degradation percentages of RhB, SY, and CR dye solution are 80%, 60%, and 95%, respectively. In summary, the synthesized nanocomposites degrade toxic organic dyes with the help of visible light and are suitable for future industrial applications.
