Aromatic sensitizers in luminescent hybrid films.

ABSTRACT: Atomic layer deposition offers a unique set of design possibilities due to the vast range of metal and organic precursors that can be used and combined. In this work, we have combined lanthanides with aromatic aids as strongly absorbing sensitizers to form highly luminescent thin films. Terephthalic acid is used as a base sensitizer, absorbing shorter wavelengths than 300 nm. The absorption range is extended towards the near-UV and blue range by increasing the aromatic system and adding functional groups that have strong red-shifting effects. While terbium and europium provide green and red emission, yttrium allows emission from the sensitizer itself spanning the whole color range from purple, blue and green to red. Many organic dye molecules show very high luminescence quantum yields and several of the molecules and materials investigated in this work show bright luminescence.

Ethylene sensing by silver(I) salt-impregnated luminescent films.

Project description:Luminescent oligomers and polymers doped with silver(I) salts were used as optical sensors for ethylene and other gaseous small molecules. Films of poly(vinylphenylketone) (PVPK) or 1,4-bis(methylstyryl)benzene (BMSB) impregnated with AgBF(4), AgSbF(6), or AgB(C(6)F(5))(4) respond to ethylene exposures with a reversible emission quenching that is proportional to the pressure of the gas. Experiments with various analytes revealed that only gases capable of forming coordinate bonds with Ag(I) ions (i.e., ethylene, propylene, and ammonia) produced a sensing response. Comparison of the effects of ethylene and tetradeuterioethylene revealed that the emission quenching was due to enhanced vibrational relaxation. The Ag(I) ions are essential to the observed optical response. The oligomer/polymer support enhances the response characteristics of the impregnated salt by promoting separation of Ag(I) from its anion, a separation that improves accessibility of the Ag(I) ion to the gaseous analytes. Salts with large lattice energies, where the anion is not dissociated from Ag(I) in the matrix, fail to sensitize film responses. Photoluminescence experiments with Ag(I)-impregnated BMSB films established that the Ag(I) ions serve to communicate the analyte-binding signal to the support by altering the support-based emission. These experiments demonstrate a sensing paradigm where simultaneous coordination of Ag(I) ions to the support matrix and to a gaseous analyte enables the optical response.

Biofilm interfacial acidity evaluation by pH-Responsive luminescent nanoparticle films.

Project description:Biofilms are dense bacterial colonies that may adhere to the surfaces of medical devices and are major contributors to infections. These colonies are characterized by a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Bacterial biofilms are difficult to treat with the commonly used antibiotics partially because of their poor diffusion through the EPS and therefore require new targeted strategies to effectively fight them. Biofilms may produce an acidic microenvironment which can be exploited to design such targeted treatment strategies. However, there is currently a lack of high-throughput ways to determine the acidity of biofilms at their interface with the medical device. Here, a novel all-inorganic pH responsive system is developed from luminescent carbonated hydroxyapatite nanoparticles doped with Eu3+ ions which can determine the biofilm acidity fluorometrically due to carbonate removal in acidic environments that directly affects the nanoparticle luminescence. The pH responsive nanoparticles are in-situ deposited during their production onto substrates on which a variety of clinically-relevant biofilms are grown. The acidity of their interfacial (micro)environment depends on the bacterial species and strain even when differences in biofilm biomass are considered.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic and Luminescent Rare Earth/Polymer complex Films.

Project description:The motivation of this work is to create luminescent rare earth/polymer films with outstanding water-resistance and superhydrophobicity. Specifically, the emulsion polymerization of styrene leads to core particles. Then core-shell-structured polymer nanoparticles are synthesized by copolymerization of styrene and acrylic acid on the core surface. The coordination reaction between carboxylic groups and rare earth ions (Eu(3+) and Tb(3+)) generates uniform spherical rare earth/polymer nanoparticles, which are subsequently complexed with PTFE microparticles to obtain micro-/nano-scaled PTFE/rare earth films with hierarchical rough morphology. The films exhibit large water contact angle up to 161° and sliding angle of about 6°, and can emit strong red and green fluorescence under UV excitation. More surprisingly, it is found that the films maintain high fluorescence intensity after submersed in water and even in aqueous salt solution for two days because of the excellent water repellent ability of surfaces.

Vapochromic Behaviour of Polycarbonate Films Doped with a Luminescent Molecular Rotor.

Project description:We report on vapochromic films suitable for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), based on polycarbonate (PC) doped with 4-(triphenylamino)phthalonitrile (TPAP), a fluorescent molecular rotor sensitive to solvent polarity and viscosity. PC films of variable thickness (from 20 up to 80 µm) and containing small amounts of TPAP (0.05 wt.%) were prepared and exposed to a saturated atmosphere of different VOCs. TPAP/PC films showed a gradual decrease and red-shift of the emission during the exposure to solvents with high polarity index and favourable interaction with the polymer matrix such as THF, CHCl3, and acetonitrile. In the case of the most interacting solvents (THF and CHCl3), TPAP/PC films also showed a fluorescence increase at longer exposure times, as a consequence of an irreversible, solvent-induced crystallization process of the polymeric matrix. The vapochromism of TPAP/PC films is rationalized on the basis of alterations of the rotor intramolecular motion upon solvent uptake by PC and polarity effects of the microenvironment. Interestingly, the fluorescence response of the TPAP/PC films shows a non-trivial, tuneable dependence on film thickness during the second solvent-exposure stage. The latter effect is attributed to a variable extent of the crystallization process occurring in the PC films. This observation promptly suggests, in turn, an effective procedure to modulate the spectroscopic response in such functionalized polymeric materials through the precise control of the film thickness.

Development of luminescent pH sensor films for monitoring bacterial growth through tissue.

Project description:Although implanted medical devices (IMDs) offer many benefits, they are susceptible to bacterial colonization and infections. Such infections are difficult to treat because bacteria could form biofilms on the implant surface, which reduce antibiotics penetration and generate local dormant regions with low pH and low oxygen. In addition, these infections are hard to detect early because biofilms are often localized on the surface. Herein, an optical sensor film is developed to detect local acidosis on an implanted surface. The film contains both upconverting particles (UCPs) that serve as a light source and a pH indicator that alters the luminescence spectrum. When irradiated with 980 nm light, the UCPs produce deeply penetrating red light emission, while generating negligible autofluorescence in the tissue. The basic form of the pH indicator absorbs more of upconversion luminescence at 661 nm than at 671 nm and consequently the spectral ratio indicates pH. Implanting this pH sensor film beneath 6-7 mm of porcine tissue does not substantially affect the calibration curve because the peaks are closely spaced. Furthermore, growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis on the sensor surface causes a local pH decrease that can be detected non-invasively through the tissue.

Raman Spectra of Luminescent Graphene Oxide (GO)-Phosphor Hybrid Nanoscrolls.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO)-phosphor hybrid nanoscrolls were synthesized using a simple chemical method. The GO-phosphor ratio was varied to find the optimum ratio for enhanced optical characteristics of the hybrid. A scanning electron microscope analysis revealed that synthesized GO scrolls achieved a length of over 20 μm with interior cavities. The GO-phosphor hybrid is extensively analyzed using Raman spectroscopy, suggesting that various Raman combination modes are activated with the appearance of a low-frequency radial breathing-like mode (RBLM) of the type observed in carbon nanotubes. All of the synthesized GO-phosphor hybrids exhibit an intense luminescent emission around 540 nm along with a broad emission at approximately 400 nm, with the intensity ratio varying with the GO-phosphor ratio. The photoluminescence emissions were gauged using Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates and at an optimum ratio. The coordinates shift to the white region of the color spectra. Our study suggests that the GO-phosphor hybrid nanoscrolls are suitable candidates for light-emitting applications.

Optimizing sensitization processes in dinuclear luminescent lanthanide oligomers: selection of rigid aromatic spacers.

Project description:This work illustrates a simple approach for optimizing the lanthanide luminescence in molecular dinuclear lanthanide complexes and identifies a particular multidentate europium complex as the best candidate for further incorporation into polymeric materials. The central phenyl ring in the bis-tridentate model ligands L3–L5, which are substituted with neutral (X = H, L3), electron-withdrawing (X = F, L4), or electron-donating (X = OCH3, L5) groups, separates the 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine binding units of linear oligomeric multi-tridentate ligand strands that are designed for the complexation of luminescent trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III). Reactions of L3–L5 with [Ln(hfac)3(diglyme)] (hfac– is the hexafluoroacetylacetonate anion) produce saturated single-stranded dumbbell-shaped complexes [Ln2(Lk)(hfac)6] (k = 3–5), in which the lanthanide ions of the two nine-coordinate neutral [N3Ln(hfac)3] units are separated by 12–14 Å. The thermodynamic affinities of [Ln(hfac)3] for the tridentate binding sites in L3–L5 are average (6.6 ? log(?(2,1)(Y,Lk)) ? 8.4) but still result in 15–30% dissociation at millimolar concentrations in acetonitrile. In addition to the empirical solubility trend found in organic solvents (L4 > L3 >> L5), which suggests that the 1,4-difluorophenyl spacer in L4 is preferable, we have developed a novel tool for deciphering the photophysical sensitization processes operating in [Eu2(Lk)(hfac)6]. A simple interpretation of the complete set of rate constants characterizing the energy migration mechanisms provides straightforward objective criteria for the selection of [Eu2(L4)(hfac)6] as the most promising building block.

Carbon Nanotube and Cellulose Nanocrystal Hybrid Films.

Project description:The use of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) in high performance coatings is attractive for micro-scale structures or device fabrication due to the anisotropic geometry, however CNC are insulating materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are also rod-shaped nanomaterials that display high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. The hydrophobic regions of surface-modified CNC can interact with hydrophobic CNT and aid in association between the two anisotropic nanomaterials. The long-range electrostatic repulsion of CNC plays a role in forming a stable CNT and CNC mixture dispersion in water, which is integral to forming a uniform hybrid film. At concentrations favorable for film formation, the multiwalled nanotubes + CNC mixture dispersion shows cellular network formation, indicating local phase separation, while the single-walled nanotube + CNC mixture dispersion shows schlieren texture, indicating liquid crystal mixture formation. Conductive CNT + CNC hybrid films (5-20 μm thick) were cast on glass microscope slides with and without shear by blade coating. The CNT + CNC hybrid films electrical conductivity increased with increasing CNT loadings and some anisotropy was observed with the sheared hybrid films, although to a lesser extent than what was anticipated. Percolation models were applied to model the hybrid film conductivity and correlate with the hybrid film microstructure.

Single Excited Dual Band Luminescent Hybrid Carbon Dots-Terbium Chelate Nanothermometer.

Project description:The report introduces hybrid polyelectrolyte-stabilized colloids combining blue and green-emitting building blocks, which are citrate carbon dots (CDs) and [TbL]+ chelate complexes with 1,3-diketonate derivatives of calix[4]arene. The joint incorporation of green and blue-emitting blocks into the polysodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) aggregates is carried out through the solvent-exchange synthetic technique. The coordinative binding between Tb3+ centers and CD surface groups in initial DMF solutions both facilitates joint incorporation of [TbL]+ complexes and the CDs into the PSS-based nanobeads and affects fluorescence properties of [TbL]+ complexes and CDs, as well as their ability for temperature sensing. The variation of the synthetic conditions is represented herein as a tool for tuning the fluorescent response of the blue and green-emitting blocks upon heating and cooling. The revealed regularities enable developing either dual-band luminescent colloids for monitoring temperature changes within 25-50 °C through double color emission or transforming the colloids into ratiometric temperature sensors via simple concentration variation of [TbL]+ and CDs in the initial DMF solution. Novel hybrid carbon dots-terbium chelate PSS-based nanoplatform opens an avenue for a new generation of sensitive and customizable single excited dual-band nanothermometers.
