A trustworthy mechanochemical route to isocyanides.

ABSTRACT: Isocyanides are hardly produced, dramatically sensitive to purification processes, and complex to handle as synthetic tools. Notwithstanding, they represent one of the most refined and valuable compounds for accessing sophisticated and elegant synthetic routes. A unique interest has always been addressed to their production, though their synthetic pathways usually involve employing strong conditions and toxic reagents. The current paper intends to provide a conceptually innovative synthetic protocol for mechanochemical isocyanide preparation, simultaneously lowering the related reagents' toxicity and improving their purification in a straightforward procedure.

Mechanochemical route to the synthesis of nanostructured Aluminium nitride.

Project description:Hexagonal Aluminium nitride (h-AlN) is an important wide-bandgap semiconductor material which is conventionally fabricated by high temperature carbothermal reduction of alumina under toxic ammonia atmosphere. Here we report a simple, low cost and potentially scalable mechanochemical procedure for the green synthesis of nanostructured h-AlN from a powder mixture of Aluminium and melamine precursors. A combination of experimental and theoretical techniques has been employed to provide comprehensive mechanistic insights on the reactivity of melamine, solid state metal-organic interactions and the structural transformation of Al to h-AlN under non-equilibrium ball milling conditions. The results reveal that melamine is adsorbed through the amine groups on the Aluminium surface due to the long-range van der Waals forces. The high energy provided by milling leads to the deammoniation of melamine at the initial stages followed by the polymerization and formation of a carbon nitride network, by the decomposition of the amine groups and, finally, by the subsequent diffusion of nitrogen into the Aluminium structure to form h-AlN.

A Mechanochemical Route for ZnS Nanocrystals, and Batch Sorting along Size Distribution.

Project description:The assistances of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and aging treatment were introduced to further improve the room-temperature mechanochemical synthesis of the quantum-sized zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanocrystals. As a result, a green strategy for synthesizing the monodisperse nanocrystals with tunable size and crystallinity was developed, holding convenient, highly efficient and low pollution. Size evolution shows a gradually increasing trend along the aging-temperature. A model that the independent reaction cells constructed by SDBS-wrapped reactant packages (solid state vesicles, SSVs) for the confined growth of ZnS nanocrystals was proposed to access the formation mechanism of ZnS quantized crystal in a solid-state synthesis system. The band gaps and band-edge luminescent emissions of as-prepared ZnS nanocrystals experienced the size-dependent quantum confinement effect, while the trap-state emissions exhibited the lattice integrity-dependence. Furthermore, ZnS quantum-sized nanocrystals with narrower size distribution can be obtained by a batch-sorting process through adjusting the centrifugal speed.

Mechanochemical Phosphorylation of Acetylides Using Condensed Phosphates: A Sustainable Route to Alkynyl Phosphonates.

Project description:In pursuit of a more sustainable route to phosphorus-carbon (P-C) bond-containing chemicals, we herein report that phosphonates can be prepared by mechanochemical phosphorylation of acetylides using polyphosphates in a single step, redox-neutral process, bypassing white phosphorus (P4) and other high-energy, environmentally hazardous intermediates. Using sodium triphosphate (Na5P3O10) and acetylides, alkynyl phosphonates 1 can be isolated in yields of up to 32%, while reaction of sodium pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7) and sodium carbide (Na2C2) engendered, in an optimized yield of 63%, ethynyl phosphonate 2, an easily isolable compound that can be readily converted to useful organophosphorus chemicals. Highly condensed phosphates like Graham's salt and bioproduced polyphosphate were also found to be compatible after reducing the chain length by grinding with orthophosphate. These results demonstrate the possibility of accessing organophosphorus chemicals directly from condensed phosphates and may offer an opportunity to move toward a "greener" phosphorus industry.

M(II)Al4 Type Layered Double Hydroxides-Preparation Using Mechanochemical Route, Structural Characterization and Catalytic Application.

Project description:The synthesis of the copper-poor and aluminum-rich layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of the CuAl4 type was optimized in detail in this work, by applying an intense mechanochemical treatment to activate the gibbsite starting reagent. The phase-pure forms of these LDHs were prepared for the first time; using copper nitrate and perchlorate salts during the syntheses turned out to be the key to avoiding the formation of copper hydroxide sideproducts. Based on the use of the optimized syntheses parameters, the preparation of layered triple and multiple hydroxides was also attempted using Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and even Mg(II) ions. These studies let us identify the relative positions of the incorporating cations in the well-known selectivity series as Ni2+ >> Cu2+ >> Zn2+ > Co2+ >> Mg2+. The solids formed were characterized by using powder X-ray diffractometry, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The catalytic potential of the samples was investigated in carbon monoxide oxidation reactions at atmospheric pressure, supported by an in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy probe. All solids proved to be active and the combination of the nickel and cobalt incorporation (which resulted in a NiCoAl8 layered triple hydroxide) brought outstanding benefits regarding low-temperature oxidation and increased carbon monoxide conversion values.

A Combined Mechanochemical and Calcination Route to Mixed Cobalt Oxides for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of Nitrophenols.

Project description:Para-, or 4-nitrophenol, and related nitroaromatics are broadly used compounds in industrial processes and as a result are among the most common anthropogenic pollutants in aqueous industrial effluent; this requires development of practical remediation strategies. Their catalytic reduction to the less toxic and synthetically desirable aminophenols is one strategy. However, to date, the majority of work focuses on catalysts based on precisely tailored, and often noble metal-based nanoparticles. The cost of such systems hampers practical, larger scale application. We report a facile route to bulk cobalt oxide-based materials, via a combined mechanochemical and calcination approach. Vibratory ball milling of CoCl2(H2O)6 with KOH, and subsequent calcination afforded three cobalt oxide-based materials with different combinations of CoO(OH), Co(OH)2, and Co3O4 with different crystallite domains/sizes and surface areas; Co@100, Co@350 and Co@600 (Co@###; # = calcination temp). All three prove active for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and related aminonitrophenols. In the case of 4-nitrophenol, Co@350 proved to be the most active catalyst, therein its retention of activity over prolonged exposure to air, moisture, and reducing environments, and applicability in flow processes is demonstrated.

Sustainable Production of Reduced Phosphorus Compounds: Mechanochemical Hydride Phosphorylation Using Condensed Phosphates as a Route to Phosphite.

Project description:In pursuit of a more sustainable production of phosphorous acid (H3PO3), a versatile chemical with phosphorus in the +3 oxidation state, we herein report that condensed phosphates can be employed to phosphorylate hydride reagents under solvent-free mechanochemical conditions to furnish phosphite (HPO3 2-). Using potassium hydride as the hydride source, sodium trimetaphosphate (Na3P3O9), triphosphate (Na5P3O10), pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7), fluorophosphate (Na2PO3F), and polyphosphate ("(NaPO3) n ") engendered phosphite in optimized yields of 44, 58, 44, 84, and 55% based on total P content, respectively. Formation of overreduced products including hypophosphite (H2PO2 -) was identified as a competing process, and mechanistic investigations revealed that hydride attack on in-situ-generated phosphorylated phosphite species is a potent pathway for overreduction. The phosphite generated from our method was easily isolated in the form of barium phosphite, a useful intermediate for production of phosphorous acid. This method circumvents the need to pass through white phosphorus (P4) as a high-energy intermediate and mitigates involvement of environmentally hazardous chemicals. A bioproduced polyphosphate was found to be a viable starting material for the production of phosphite. These results demonstrate the possibility of accessing reduced phosphorus compounds in a more sustainable manner and, more importantly, a means to close the modern phosphorus cycle.

Structure and Reactivity of Glycosyl Isocyanides.

Project description:3D structural information was obtained from mono-, di- and trisaccharide formamide and isocyanide derivatives by analysis of their X-ray crystal structure and NMR spectroscopy. The isocyanide anomeric effect was observed. Data mining of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) was performed and statistically confirmed our findings. Application of the glycoside isocyanides in the synthesis of novel glycoconjugates as drug-like scaffolds by MCR chemistry underscores the usefulness of the novel building blocks.

A Simple and Efficient Mechanochemical Route for the Synthesis of Salophen Ligands and of the Corresponding Zn, Ni, and Pd Complexes.

Project description:A number of salophen ligands and their Zn, Ni, and Pd complexes were synthesized by an efficient one-pot mechanosynthesis protocol. The reaction products were characterized by means of complementary solid-state techniques, i.e., powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Four new crystal structures of metal salophen complexes as DMSO solvates are here reported. The described simple and relatively fast (about 1 h for all derivatives) procedure is a good alternative to classical methods performed in organic solvents.

Isocyanides: Promising Functionalities in Bioorthogonal Labeling of Biomolecules.

Project description:Isocyanides have drawn increasing attention in biological applications due to their attractive properties and unique reactivities, which can undergo various reactions, such as multicomponent reactions, α-addition reactions, [4 + 1] cycloaddition reactions, and the reaction scope keeps expanding. In addition to acting as reactants for the preparation of structurally interesting and diverse N-heterocycles or peptidomimetics, this type of functionality may be a good choice in the labeling and modulation of biomolecules due to the high biocompatibility and small size to minimize modifications on the parent molecule. It has been demonstrated that isocyanides can participate in biomolecule labeling through three strategies, including the two-component bioorthogonal reaction, multicomponent reaction, and metal chelation. Among them, the isocyanide-tetrazine reaction has been better studied recently, augmenting the potency of isocyanide as a bioorthogonal handle. This review will focus on the recent progress in isocyanide chemistry for labeling of biomolecules. Meanwhile, methods to introduce isocyano groups into biomacromolecules are also described to facilitate wider applications of this unique functionality.

Dearomatization of aromatic asmic isocyanides to complex cyclohexadienes.

Project description:A dearomatization-dislocation-coupling cascade rapidly transforms aromatic isocyanides into highly functionalized cyclohexadienes. The facile cascade installs an exceptional degree of molecular complexity: three carbon-carbon bonds, two quaternary stereocenters, and three orthogonal functionalities, a cyclohexadiene, a nitrile, and an isocyanide. The tolerance of arylisocyanides makes the method among the mildest dearomatizations ever reported, typically occurring within minutes at -78 °C. Experimental and computational analyses implicate an electron transfer-initiated mechanism involving an unprecedented isocyanide rearrangement followed by radical-radical anion coupling. The dearomatization is fast, proceeds via a complex cascade mechanism supported by experimental and computational insight, and provides complex, synthetically valuable cyclohexadienes.
