The lateral patellofemoral ligament acts to resist medial displacement of the patella. When medial subluxation occurs, it usually has an iatrogenic cause such as prior lateral release, an over-tightened medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, or detachment of the vastus lateralis from the patella.
