Dataset from the detailed survey of vintage unreinforced masonry buildings in the State of Queensland, Australia.

ABSTRACT: Due to an identified need to have realistic geometries and boundary conditions of vintage unreinforced masonry (URM) parapets and gable ends, this data collection study was conducted to document prevalent typologies of URM buildings in the Australian State of Queensland. Street surveys were completed in 7 towns and included measurement of the building geometry and the documentation of the other building construction details that were ascertainable using a brief external evaluation. To collect the data, firstly the historical statistical records from Colonial Australia were interrogated to determine regions with the largest potential stocks of vintage URM buildings. It was found that, excluding the Queensland capital (Brisbane), seven other towns existed that had reported significant URM building construction during late 19^th century and early 20th century census. These seven towns were selected for street surveys, and Brisbane was excluded due to the lack of sufficient resources. The street survey included take measurable photographs of building facades using a digital laser-based tool. These photographs were used in subsequent desktop study to calculate façade geometries. Additional relevant building information was extracted from Google Map and other sources, enabling an estimate of the roof shape and building plan dimension to be also obtained. This data report includes spreadsheets containing summary of the 363 surveyed building properties and the drawings that were created using the collected data.

Project description:In this data article, questionnaire was administered to public secondary school teachers to investigate user-perceptions of the prevailing deterioration condition of the school buildings, in Ogun State, Nigeria. The condition of some factors such as, roof, paints, floor, walls, windows, doors, electrical, plumbing, toilets, WC, pipes, drains were the investigated variables. The data presented here are the opinion of the respondents. Through this research, it was discovered that most of the academic building of public secondary school of our study area were not properly managed and poorly maintained as a result of insufficient fund for maintenance and lack of maintenance culture.

Factors Determining the Biodiversity of Halophilic Microorganisms on Historic Masonry Buildings.

Project description:The aim of the present study was to obtain insights into the relationship between the chemical (salt content and pH) and physico-mechanical (humidity and compressive strength) properties of mineral-based materials from historic buildings with salt efflorescence and the growth and biodiversity of halophilic microorganisms. Samples were mainly characterized by pH 6.5-8.5 and a moisture content of between 0.12 and 3.3%. Significant variations were also found in the salt content (sulfates, chlorides, and nitrates) of the materials. An SEM/EDS analysis of material surfaces revealed the presence of halite, calcite, gypsum, sodium sulfate, and potassium-sodium sulfate. Culture-dependent and culture-independent (clone library construction) approaches were both applied to detect halophilic microorganisms. Results derived from culturable methods and the materials analysis revealed a correlation between the total halophile count and pH value as well as sulfate content. A correlation was not observed between the concentration of chlorides or nitrates and the number of halophilic microorganisms. The materials studied were inhabited by the culturable halophilic bacteria Halobacillus sp., Virgibacillus sp., and Marinococcus sp. as well as the yeast Sterigmatomyces sp., which was isolated for the first time from mineral materials. Culture-independent techniques revealed the following bacterial species: Salinibacterium, Salinisphaera, Rubrobacter, Rubricoccus, Halomonas, Halorhodospira, Solirubrobacter, Salinicoccus, and Salinibacter. Biodiversity was the highest in materials with high or moderate salinity.

Increased Incidence of Melioidosis in Far North Queensland, Queensland, Australia, 1998-2019.

Project description:During January 1998-December 2019, the annual incidence of melioidosis in Far North Queensland, Queensland, Australia, more than doubled. Because climate and prevalence of predisposing medical conditions remained stable during that time, we hypothesize that the increased incidence was caused by urban expansion and increased construction, resulting in greater exposure to Burkholderia pseudomallei.

What's in a Building? A Descriptive Survey of Adult Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Buildings in Victoria, Australia.

Project description:ObjectiveTo identify all the services that offer inpatient rehabilitation in Victoria, Australia, and to describe the buildings in which these services are housed, including their size, age, whether or not they were purpose-built, whether or not they are colocated with a tertiary hospital, the proportion of single-bed rooms, and ward layout.DesignCross-sectional survey of inpatient rehabilitation buildings. Data were collected via telephone questionnaire and websites.ParticipantsSixty-four rehabilitation facilities were identified and all participated in the survey (37 public, 27 private).ResultsResults revealed heterogeneity on most variables measured, including size (number of beds ranged from 2-104), age (oldest building built in 1860, and 26% built since 2010), purpose-built status (48% purpose-built), freestanding status (34% freestanding), percentage of single-bed rooms (ranged from 0%-100%), and layout. All facilities had a therapy gym, and most had a communal area (96%).ConclusionSince 2010, the proportion of buildings being purpose-built and colocated with a tertiary hospital has increased. The proportion of single-bed rooms has also increased and is especially high in privately funded facilities. Results suggest that rehabilitation design is influenced by norms and evidence from acute medical health care despite the purpose of care being different: acute care (short-term, medical illness) and rehabilitation (longer-term, recovery, relearning).

A survey on Mycobacterium ulcerans in Mosquitoes and March flies captured from endemic areas of Northern Queensland, Australia.

Project description:Mycobacterium ulcerans is the causative agent of Buruli ulcer (BU). This nontuberculous mycobacterial infection has been reported in 34 countries worldwide. In Australia, the majority of cases of BU have been recorded in coastal Victoria and the Mossman-Daintree areas of north Queensland. Mosquitoes have been postulated as a vector of M. ulcerans in Victoria, however the specific mode of transmission of this disease is still far from being well understood. In the current study, we trapped and analysed 16,900 (allocated to 845 pools) mosquitoes and 296 March flies from the endemic areas of north Queensland to examine for the presence of M. ulcerans DNA by polymerase chain reaction. Seven of 845 pools of mosquitoes were positive on screening using the IS2404 PCR target (maximum likelihood estimate 0.4/1,000). M. ulcerans DNA was detected from one pool of mosquitoes from which all three PCR targets: IS2404, IS2606 and the ketoreductase B domain of mycolactone polyketide synthase gene were detected. None of the March fly samples were positive for the presence of M. ulcerans DNA.

New Mid-Cretaceous (latest Albian) dinosaurs fromWinton, Queensland, Australia.

Project description:BackgroundAustralia's dinosaurian fossil record is exceptionally poor compared to that of other similar-sized continents. Most taxa are known from fragmentary isolated remains with uncertain taxonomic and phylogenetic placement. A better understanding of the Australian dinosaurian record is crucial to understanding the global palaeobiogeography of dinosaurian groups, including groups previously considered to have had Gondwanan origins, such as the titanosaurs and carcharodontosaurids.Methodology/principal findingsWe describe three new dinosaurs from the late Early Cretaceous (latest Albian) Winton Formation of eastern Australia, including; Wintonotitan wattsi gen. et sp. nov., a basal titanosauriform; Diamantinasaurus matildae gen. et sp. nov., a derived lithostrotian titanosaur; and Australovenator wintonensis gen. et sp. nov., an allosauroid. We compare an isolated astragalus from the Early Cretaceous of southern Australia; formerly identified as Allosaurus sp., and conclude that it most-likely represents Australovenator sp.Conclusion/significanceThe occurrence of Australovenator from the Aptian to latest Albian confirms the presence in Australia of allosauroids basal to the Carcharodontosauridae. These new taxa, along with the fragmentary remains of other taxa, indicate a diverse Early Cretaceous sauropod and theropod fauna in Australia, including plesiomorphic forms (e.g. Wintonotitan and Australovenator) and more derived forms (e.g. Diamantinasaurus).
