Protocol for deposition of conductive oxides onto 3D-printed materials for electronic device applications.

ABSTRACT: Additively manufactured (AM) three-dimensional (3D) mesostructures can be designed to enhance mechanical, thermal, or optical properties, driving future device applications at the micron to millimeter scale. We present a protocol for transforming AM mesostructures into 3D electronics by growing nanoscale conducting films on 3D-printed polymers. In this generalizable approach, we describe steps to utilize precision thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) of conducting, semiconducting, and dielectric metal oxides. This can be applied to ultrasmooth, customizable photopolymer lattices printed by high-resolution microstereolithography. Fused Deposition Modeling 3D Printing for (Bio)analytical Device Fabrication: Procedures, Materials, and Applications.

Project description:In this work, the use of fused deposition modeling (FDM) in a (bio)analytical/lab-on-a-chip research laboratory is described. First, the specifications of this 3D printing method that are important for the fabrication of (micro)devices were characterized for a benchtop FDM 3D printer. These include resolution, surface roughness, leakage, transparency, material deformation, and the possibilities for integration of other materials. Next, the autofluorescence, solvent compatibility, and biocompatibility of 12 representative FDM materials were tested and evaluated. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of FDM in a number of important applications. In particular, we consider the fabrication of fluidic channels, masters for polymer replication, and tools for the production of paper microfluidic devices. This work thus provides a guideline for (i) the use of FDM technology by addressing its possibilities and current limitations, (ii) material selection for FDM, based on solvent compatibility and biocompatibility, and (iii) application of FDM technology to (bio)analytical research by demonstrating a broad range of illustrative examples.

Comparisons of 3D printed materials for biomedical imaging applications.

Project description:In biomedical imaging, it is desirable that custom-made accessories for restraint, anesthesia, and monitoring can be easily cleaned and not interfere with the imaging quality or analyses. With the rise of 3D printing as a form of rapid prototyping or manufacturing for imaging tools and accessories, it is important to understand which printable materials are durable and not likely to interfere with imaging applications. Here, 15 3D printable materials were evaluated for radiodensity, optical properties, simulated wear, and capacity for repeated cleaning and disinfection. Materials that were durable, easily cleaned, and not expected to interfere with CT, PET, or optical imaging applications were identified.

3D-Printed Demineralized Bone Matrix-Based Conductive Scaffolds Combined with Electrical Stimulation for Bone Tissue Engineering Applications.

Project description:Bone is remodeled through a dynamic process facilitated by biophysical cues that support cellular signaling. In healthy bone, signaling pathways are regulated by cells and the extracellular matrix and transmitted via electrical synapses. To this end, combining electrical stimulation (ES) with conductive scaffolding is a promising approach for repairing damaged bone tissue. Therefore, "smart" biomaterials that can provide multifunctionality and facilitate the transfer of electrical cues directly to cells have become increasingly more studied in bone tissue engineering. Herein, 3D-printed electrically conductive composite scaffolds consisting of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) and polycaprolactone (PCL), in combination with ES, for bone regeneration were evaluated for the first time. The conductive composite scaffolds were fabricated and characterized by evaluating mechanical, surface, and electrical properties. The DBM/PCL composites exhibited a higher compressive modulus (107.2 MPa) than that of pristine PCL (62.02 MPa), as well as improved surface properties (i.e., roughness). Scaffold electrical properties were also tuned, with sheet resistance values as low as 4.77 × 105 Ω/sq for our experimental coating of the highest dilution (i.e., 20%). Furthermore, the biocompatibility and osteogenic potential of the conductive composite scaffolds were tested using human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) both with and without exogenous ES (100 mV/mm for 5 min/day four times/week). In conjunction with ES, the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs grown on conductive DBM/PCL composite scaffolds was significantly enhanced when compared to those cultured on PCL-only and nonconductive DBM/PCL control scaffolds, as determined through xylenol orange mineral staining and osteogenic protein analysis. Overall, these promising results suggest the potential of this approach for the development of biomimetic hybrid scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications.

Bacterial Biofilm Growth on 3D-Printed Materials.

Project description:Recent advances in 3D printing have led to a rise in the use of 3D printed materials in prosthetics and external medical devices. These devices, while inexpensive, have not been adequately studied for their ability to resist biofouling and biofilm buildup. Bacterial biofilms are a major cause of biofouling in the medical field and, therefore, hospital-acquired, and medical device infections. These surface-attached bacteria are highly recalcitrant to conventional antimicrobial agents and result in chronic infections. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and medical officials have considered 3D printed medical devices as alternatives to conventional devices, due to manufacturing shortages. This abundant use of 3D printed devices in the medical fields warrants studies to assess the ability of different microorganisms to attach and colonize to such surfaces. In this study, we describe methods to determine bacterial biofouling and biofilm formation on 3D printed materials. We explored the biofilm-forming ability of multiple opportunistic pathogens commonly found on the human body including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus to colonize eight commonly used polylactic acid (PLA) polymers. Biofilm quantification, surface topography, digital optical microscopy, and 3D projections were employed to better understand the bacterial attachment to 3D printed surfaces. We found that biofilm formation depends on surface structure, hydrophobicity, and that there was a wide range of antimicrobial properties among the tested polymers. We compared our tested materials with commercially available antimicrobial PLA polymers.

Current Biomedical Applications of 3D-Printed Hydrogels.

Project description:Three-dimensional (3D) printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has revolutionized the production of physical 3D objects by transforming computer-aided design models into layered structures, eliminating the need for traditional molding or machining techniques. In recent years, hydrogels have emerged as an ideal 3D printing feedstock material for the fabrication of hydrated constructs that replicate the extracellular matrix found in endogenous tissues. Hydrogels have seen significant advancements since their first use as contact lenses in the biomedical field. These advancements have led to the development of complex 3D-printed structures that include a wide variety of organic and inorganic materials, cells, and bioactive substances. The most commonly used 3D printing techniques to fabricate hydrogel scaffolds are material extrusion, material jetting, and vat photopolymerization, but novel methods that can enhance the resolution and structural complexity of printed constructs have also emerged. The biomedical applications of hydrogels can be broadly classified into four categories-tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, 3D cell culture and disease modeling, drug screening and toxicity testing, and novel devices and drug delivery systems. Despite the recent advancements in their biomedical applications, a number of challenges still need to be addressed to maximize the use of hydrogels for 3D printing. These challenges include improving resolution and structural complexity, optimizing cell viability and function, improving cost efficiency and accessibility, and addressing ethical and regulatory concerns for clinical translation.

Simulating Tissues with 3D-Printed and Castable Materials.

Project description:Manufacturing technologies continue to be developed and utilized in medical prototyping, simulations, and imaging phantom production. For radiologic image-guided simulation and instruction, models should ideally have similar imaging characteristics and physical properties to the tissues they replicate. Due to the proliferation of different printing technologies and materials, there is a diverse and broad range of approaches and materials to consider before embarking on a project. Although many printed materials' biomechanical parameters have been reported, no manufacturer includes medical imaging properties that are essential for realistic phantom production. We hypothesize that there are now ample materials available to create high-fidelity imaging anthropomorphic phantoms using 3D printing and casting of common commercially available materials. A material database of radiological, physical, manufacturing, and economic properties for 29 castable and 68 printable materials was generated from samples fabricated by the authors or obtained from the manufacturer and scanned with CT at multiple tube voltages. This is the largest study assessing multiple different parameters associated with 3D printing to date. These data are being made freely available on GitHub, thus affording medical simulation experts access to a database of relevant imaging characteristics of common printable and castable materials. Highly Flexible and Conductive Printed Graphene for Wireless Wearable Communications Applications.

Project description:In this paper, we report highly conductive, highly flexible, light weight and low cost printed graphene for wireless wearable communications applications. As a proof of concept, printed graphene enabled transmission lines and antennas on paper substrates were designed, fabricated and characterized. To explore its potentials in wearable communications applications, mechanically flexible transmission lines and antennas under various bended cases were experimentally studied. The measurement results demonstrate that the printed graphene can be used for RF signal transmitting, radiating and receiving, which represents some of the essential functionalities of RF signal processing in wireless wearable communications systems. Furthermore, the printed graphene can be processed at low temperature so that it is compatible with heat-sensitive flexible materials like papers and textiles. This work brings a step closer to the prospect to implement graphene enabled low cost and environmentally friendly wireless wearable communications systems in the near future.

Inkjet-Printed Silver Nanowire Ink for Flexible Transparent Conductive Film Applications.

Project description:The development of flexible transparent conductive electrodes has been considered as a key issue in realizing flexible functional electronics. Inkjet printing provides a new opportunity for the manufacture of FFE due to simple process, cost-effective, environmental friendliness, and digital method to circuit pattern. However, obtaining high concentration of inkjet- printed silver nanowires (AgNWs) conductive ink is a great challenge because the high aspect ratio of AgNWs makes it easy to block the jetting nozzle. This study provides an inkjet printing AgNWs conductive ink with low viscosity and high concentration of AgNWs and good printing applicability, especially without nozzle blockage after printing for more than 4 h. We discussed the effects of the components of the ink on surface tension, viscosity, contact angle as well as droplet spreading behavior. Under the optimized process and formulation of ink, flexible transparent conductive electrode with a sheet resistance of 32 Ω·sq-1-291 nm·sq-1 and a transmittancy at 550 nm of 72.5-86.3% is achieved. We investigated the relationship between the printing layer and the sheet resistance and the stability of the sheet resistance under a bending test as well as the infrared thermal response of the AgNWs-based flexible transparent conductive electrode. We successfully printed the coupling electrodes and demonstrated the excellent potential of inkjet-printed AgNWs-based flexible transparent conductive electrode for developing flexible functional electronics.

3D-Printed COVID-19 immunosensors with electronic readout.

Project description:3D printing technology has brought light in the fight against the COVID-19 global pandemic event through the decentralized and on-demand manufacture of different personal protective equipment and medical devices. Nonetheless, since this technology is still in an early stage, the use of 3D-printed electronic devices for antigen test developments is almost an unexplored field. Herein, a robust and general bottom-up biofunctionalization approach via surface engineering is reported aiming at providing the bases for the fabrication of the first 3D-printed COVID-19 immunosensor prototype with electronic readout. The 3D-printed COVID-19 immunosensor was constructed by covalently anchoring the COVID-19 recombinant protein on a 3D-printed graphene-based nanocomposite electrode surface. The electrical readout relies on impedimetrically monitoring changes at the electrode/electrolyte interface after interacting with the monoclonal COVID-19 antibody via competitive assay, fact that hinders the redox conversion of a benchmark redox marker. Overall, the developed 3D-printed system exhibits promising electroanalytical capabilities in both buffered and human serum samples, displaying an excellent linear response with a detection limit at trace levels (0.5 ± 0.1 μg·mL-1). Such achievements demonstrate advantage of light-of-speed distribution of 3D printing datafiles with localized point-of-care low-cost printing and bioelectronic devices to help contain the spread of emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19. This technology is applicable to any post-COVID-19 SARS diseases.

3D Printed MEMS Technology-Recent Developments and Applications.

Project description:Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are of high interest for recent electronic applications. Their applications range from medicine to measurement technology, from microfluidics to the Internet of Things (IoT). In many cases, MEMS elements serve as sensors or actuators, e.g., in recent mobile phones, but also in future autonomously driving cars. Most MEMS elements are based on silicon, which is not deformed plastically under a load, as opposed to metals. While highly sophisticated solutions were already found for diverse MEMS sensors, actuators, and other elements, MEMS fabrication is less standardized than pure microelectronics, which sometimes blocks new ideas. One of the possibilities to overcome this problem may be the 3D printing approach. While most 3D printing technologies do not offer sufficient resolution for MEMS production, and many of the common 3D printing materials cannot be used for this application, there are still niches in which the 3D printing of MEMS enables producing new structures and thus creating elements for new applications, or the faster and less expensive production of common systems. Here, we give an overview of the most recent developments and applications in 3D printing of MEMS.
