Ni-Doped SnO₂ as an Electron Transport Layer by a Low-Temperature Process in Planar Perovskite Solar Cells.

ABSTRACT: Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on a planar structure have recently become more attractive due to their simple manufacturing process and relatively low cost, while most perovskite solar cells employ highly porous TiO₂ as an electron transport layer in mesoporous devices offering higher energy conversion efficiency (PCE). In planar structural devices, non-radiative recombination effects of the absorber layer and the electron transport layer cause potential loss and lower PCE. We created an efficient electron transport layer by combining low-temperature Ni-doped SnO₂ with SDBS as a surfactant (denoted as Ni:SnO₂). Doping Ni⁺ into low-temperature solution-processed SnO₂ increased the power conversion efficiency of PSCs from 17.8 to 19.7%.

Low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 electron transport layer modified by oxygen plasma for planar perovskite solar cells.

Project description:SnO2 has attracted significant attention as an electron transport layer (ETL) because of its wide optical bandgap, electron mobility, and transparency. However, the annealing temperature of 180 °C-200 °C, as reported by several studies, for the fabrication of SnO2 ETL limits its application for flexible devices. Herein, we demonstrated that the low-temperature deposition of SnO2 ETL and further surface modification with oxygen plasma enhances its efficiency from 2.3% to 15.30%. Oxygen plasma treatment improves the wettability of the low-temperature processed SnO2 ETL that results in a larger perovskite grain size. Hence, oxygen plasma treatment effectively improves the efficiency of perovskite solar cells at a low temperature and is compatible with flexible applications.

Polymer-Doped SnO2 as an Electron Transport Layer for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:To produce highly efficient and repeatable perovskite solar cells (PSCs), comprehending interfacial loss and developing approaches to ameliorate interfacial features is essential. Nonradiative recombination at the SnO2-perovskite interface in SnO2-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) leads to significant potential loss and variability in device performance. To improve the quality of the SnO2 electron transport layer, a novel polymer-doped SnO2 matrix, specifically using polyacrylic acid, was developed. This matrix is formed by spin-coating a SnO2 colloidal solution that includes polymers. The polymer aids in dispersing nanoparticles within the substrate and is evenly distributed in the SnO2 solution. As a result of the polymer addition, the density and wetting properties of the SnO2 layer substantially improved. Subsequently, perovskite-based photovoltaic devices comprising SnO2 and Spiro-OMeTAD layers and using (FAPbI3)0.97(MAPbBr3)0.03 perovskite are constructed. These optimized devices exhibited an increased efficiency of 17.2% when compared to the 15.7% power conversion efficiency of the control device. The incorporation of polymers in the electron transport layer potentially enables even better performance in planar perovskite solar cells.

Yb-doped SnO2 electron transfer layer assisting the fabrication of high-efficiency and stable perovskite solar cells in air.

Project description:To date, most preparation processes of polycrystalline perovskite films still have to be performed in a glovebox filled with inert gas, limiting the application due to their high cost and complexity. In this work, we exploit a facile processing technique for the preparation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) under ambient conditions by the Yb3+ doping effect for SnO2 electron transfer layer. This remarkable and facile interface doping strategy promotes all-air processed planar PSCs, giving enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 15.69% to 17.31% with a decreasing hysteresis effect. Moreover, the heating and illumination stability of modified devices by virtue of defect suppression located at electron transfer layer (ETL)/perovskite interface has been effectively improved, retaining over 85% of its initial PCE after 7 h heating at 100 °C in ambient condition and 85% of its initial PCE under 7 h continuous light illumination without any encapsulation. Therefore, it is believed that this Yb-doping strategy for SnO2 ETL can provide a novel way of promoting the efficiency and stability of devices prepared in the air.

TiO2 Phase Junction Electron Transport Layer Boosts Efficiency of Planar Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:In the planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the electron transport layer (ETL) plays a critical role in electron extraction and transport. Widely utilized TiO2 ETLs suffer from the low conductivity and high surface defect density. To address these problems, for the first time, two types of ETLs based on TiO2 phase junction are designed and fabricated distributed in the opposite space, namely anatase/rutile and rutile/anatase. The champion efficiency of PSCs based on phase junction ETL is over 15%, which is much higher than that of cells with single anatase (9.8%) and rutile (11.8%) TiO2 as ETL. The phase junction based PSCs also demonstrated obviously reduced hysteresis. The enhanced performance is discussed and mainly ascribed to the excellent capability of carrier extraction, defect passivation, and reduced recombination at the ETL/perovskite interface. This work opens a new phase junction ETL strategy toward interfacial energy band manipulation for improved PSC performance.

MDACl2-Modified SnO2 Film for Efficient Planar Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:The electron transport layer (ETL) with excellent charge extraction and transport ability is one of the key components of high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). SnO2 has been considered as a more promising ETL for the future commercialization of PSCs due to its excellent photoelectric properties and easy processing. Herein, we propose a facile and effective ETL modification strategy based on the incorporation of methylenediammonium dichloride (MDACl2) into the SnO2 precursor colloidal solution. The effects of MDACl2 incorporation on charge transport, defect passivation, perovskite crystallization, and PSC performance are systematically investigated. First, the surface defects of the SnO2 film are effectively passivated, resulting in the increased conductivity of the SnO2 film, which is conducive to electron extraction and transport. Second, the MDACl2 modification contributes to the formation of high-quality perovskite films with improved crystallinity and reduced defect density. Furthermore, a more suitable energy level alignment is achieved at the ETL/perovskite interface, which facilitates the charge transport due to the lower energy barrier. Consequently, the MDACl2-modified PSCs exhibit a champion efficiency of 22.30% compared with 19.62% of the control device, and the device stability is also significantly improved.

Solution-Processed SnO2 Quantum Dots for the Electron Transport Layer of Flexible and Printed Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Flexible and printed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated on lightweight plastic substrates have many excellent potential applications in emerging new technologies including wearable and portable electronics, the internet of things, smart buildings, etc. To fabricate flexible and printed PSCs, all of the functional layers of devices should be processed at low temperatures. Tin oxide is one of the best metal oxide materials to employ as the electron transport layer (ETL) in PSCs. Herein, the synthesis and application of SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) to prepare the ETL of flexible and printed PSCs are demonstrated. SnO2 QDs are synthesized via a solvothermal method and processed to obtain aqueous and printable ETL ink solutions with different QD concentrations. PSCs are fabricated using a slot-die coating method on flexible plastic substrates. The solar cell performance and spectral response of the obtained devices are characterized using a solar simulator and an external quantum efficiency measurement system. The ETLs prepared using 2 wt% SnO2 QD inks are found to produce devices with a high average power conversion efficiency (PCE) along with a 10% PCE for a champion device. The results obtained in this work provide the research community with a method to prepare fully solution-processed SnO2 QD-based inks that are suitable for the deposition of SnO2 ETLs for flexible and printed PSCs.

Low-Temperature Processed TiOx Electron Transport Layer for Efficient Planar Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:The most frequently used n-type electron transport layer (ETL) in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is based on titanium oxide (TiO2) films, involving a high-temperature sintering (>450 °C) process. In this work, a dense, uniform, and pinhole-free compact titanium dioxide (TiOx) film was prepared via a facile chemical bath deposition process at a low temperature (80 °C), and was applied as a high-quality ETL for efficient planar PSCs. We tested and compared as-deposited substrates sintered at low temperatures (< 150 °C) and high temperatures (> 450 °C), as well as their corresponding photovoltaic properties. PSCs with a high-temperature treated TiO2 compact layer (CL) exhibited power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) as high as 15.50%, which was close to those of PSCs with low-temperature treated TiOx (14.51%). This indicates that low-temperature treated TiOx can be a potential ETL candidate for planar PSCs. In summary, this work reports on the fabrication of low-temperature processed PSCs, and can be of interest for the design and fabrication of future low-cost and flexible solar modules.

MgO Nanoparticle Modified Anode for Highly Efficient SnO2-Based Planar Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Reducing the energy loss and retarding the carrier recombination at the interface are crucial to improve the performance of the perovskite solar cell (PSCs). However, little is known about the recombination mechanism at the interface of anode and SnO2 electron transfer layer (ETL). In this work, an ultrathin wide bandgap dielectric MgO nanolayer is incorporated between SnO2:F (FTO) electrode and SnO2 ETL of planar PSCs, realizing enhanced electron transporting and hole blocking properties. With the use of this electrode modifier, a power conversion efficiency of 18.23% is demonstrated, an 11% increment compared with that without MgO modifier. These improvements are attributed to the better properties of MgO-modified FTO/SnO2 as compared to FTO/SnO2, such as smoother surface, less FTO surface defects due to MgO passivation, and suppressed electron-hole recombinations. Also, MgO nanolayer with lower valance band minimum level played a better role in hole blocking. When FTO is replaced with Sn-doped In2O3 (ITO), a higher power conversion efficiency of 18.82% is demonstrated. As a result, the device with the MgO hole-blocking layer exhibits a remarkable improvement of all J-V parameters. This work presents a new direction to improve the performance of the PSCs based on SnO2 ETL by transparent conductive electrode surface modification.

Formamidinium-based planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells with alkali carbonate-doped zinc oxide layer.

Project description:We herein demonstrate n-i-p-type planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells employing spin-coated ZnO nanoparticles modified with various alkali metal carbonates including Li2CO3, Na2CO3, K2CO3 and Cs2CO3, which can tune the energy band structure of ZnO ETLs. Since these metal carbonates doped on ZnO ETLs lead to deeper conduction bands in the ZnO ETLs, electrons are easily transported from the perovskite active layer to the cathode electrode. The power conversion efficiency of about 27% is improved due to the incorporation of alkali carbonates in ETLs. As alternatives to TiO2 and n-type metal oxides, electron transport materials consisting of doped ZnO nanoparticles are viable ETLs for efficient n-i-p planar heterojunction solar cells, and they can be used on flexible substrates via roll-to-roll processing.

Enhancement of Perovskite Solar Cells Efficiency using N-Doped TiO2 Nanorod Arrays as Electron Transfer Layer.

Project description:In this paper, N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) nanorod arrays were synthesized with hydrothermal method, and perovskite solar cells were fabricated using them as electron transfer layer. The solar cell performance was optimized by changing the N doping contents. The power conversion efficiency of solar cells based on N-TiO2 with the N doping content of 1% (N/Ti, atomic ratio) has been achieved 11.1%, which was 14.7% higher than that of solar cells based on un-doped TiO2. To get an insight into the improvement, some investigations were performed. The structure was examined with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and Tauc plot spectra indicated the incorporation of N in TiO2 nanorods. Absorption spectra showed higher absorption of visible light for N-TiO2 than un-doped TiO2. The N doping reduced the energy band gap from 3.03 to 2.74 eV. The photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectra displayed the faster electron transfer from perovskite layer to N-TiO2 than to un-doped TiO2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed the smaller resistance of device based on N-TiO2 than that on un-doped TiO2.
