Synthesis and Growth Mechanism of SiS₂ Rods.

ABSTRACT: The SiS₂ rods exhibit a significant anisotropy property applied in a special field such as in the one of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries and so on. In this work, the orthorhombic SiS₂ rods with high chemical/phase purity were prepared by an elemental method, either through a boiling or a steaming process, at 1023-1073 K for 3 h and under the saturated S-vapor pressure (2.57-3.83 MPa) in a closed sealed-tube system. The composition, crystal structure, morphology, and growth mechanism were investigated. Results showed that the growth orientation of SiS₂ along the <0 0 1> is intrinsically governed by the crystal structure motif. It could exist in both processes and the latter tends to show in macroscopic morphology. Using the pressure-temperature diagram, structure refinement, pole figures, image analyses, and so forth, factors influencing the purity and growth of SiS₂ rods were concluded from the thermodynamics and kinetics viewpoints.

Solvothermal synthesis, growth mechanism, and photoluminescence property of sub-micrometer PbS anisotropic structures.

Project description:The sub-micrometer PbS with anisotropic microstructures including fishbone-like dendrites, multipods, cubes, corallines, and hopper cubes were successfully prepared by the solvothermal process. Different morphologies can be obtained by adjusting the reaction temperatures or using the nontoxic controlled reagents which can tune the relative growth rate in the <100> direction and the <111> direction of PbS nuclei. Based on the viewpoint of crystallography about face-centered cubic crystal structure, the possible formation mechanism for sub-micrometer anisotropic structures has been discussed. The difference between the enhanced growth rates on the {100} and {111} planes induced the change of ratio between the growth rates in the <100> and <111> directions, which resulted in the formation of the different PbS anisotropic microstructures. The PbS anisotropic structures exhibited the different visible emission with a peak in the red regions mainly attributed to the variation of shape, size, and the trap state of as-obtained PbS.

Creating new layered structures at high pressures: SiS2.

Project description:Old and novel layered structures are attracting increasing attention for their physical, electronic, and frictional properties. SiS2, isoelectronic to SiO2, CO2 and CS2, is a material whose phases known experimentally up to 6 GPa exhibit 1D chain-like, 2D layered and 3D tetrahedral structures. We present highly predictive ab initio calculations combined with evolutionary structure search and molecular dynamics simulations of the structural and electronic evolution of SiS2 up to 100 GPa. A highly stable CdI2-type layered structure, which is octahedrally coordinated with space group surprisingly appears between 4 and up to at least 100 GPa. The tetrahedral-octahedral switch is naturally expected upon compression, unlike the layered character realized here by edge-sharing SiS6 octahedral units connecting within but not among sheets. The predicted phase is semiconducting with an indirect band gap of about 2 eV at 10 GPa, decreasing under pressure until metallization around 40 GPa. The robustness of the layered phase suggests possible recovery at ambient pressure, where calculated phonon spectra indicate dynamical stability. Even a single monolayer is found to be dynamically stable in isolation, suggesting that it could possibly be sheared or exfoliated from bulk -SiS2.

In this manuscript we describe a modular approach for construction of rod shaped para-oligobenzamide molecules. Our approach permits regiospecific incorporation of side chains through a phenolic ether linkage on the scaffold; a feature that partly restricts the conformation of the rod through intramolecular hydrogen-bonding.

Insights into the Synthesis Mechanism of Ag29 Nanoclusters.

Project description:The current understanding of the synthesis mechanisms of noble metal clusters is limited, in particular for Ag clusters. Here, we present a detailed investigation into the synthesis process of atomically monodisperse Ag29 clusters, prepared via reduction of AgNO3 in the presence of dithiolate ligands. Using optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray spectroscopy, it was determined that the synthesis involves a rapid nucleation and growth to species with up to a few hundred Ag atoms. From these larger species, Ag29 clusters are formed and their concentration increases steadily over time. Oxygen plays an important role in the etching of large particles to Ag29. No other stable Ag cluster species are observed at any point during the synthesis.

Hexagonal VO2 particles: synthesis, mechanism and thermochromic properties.

Project description:Monoclinic vanadium dioxide VO2 (M) with hexagonal structure is synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the phase evolution is evidenced. Interestingly, the hexagonal morphology comes into being as a result of the low-energy coherent interfaces, (211̄)1//(21̄1̄)2 and (21̄1̄)1//(020)2. The size of hexagonal particles is well controlled by changing the concentration of precursor solutions. Hexagonal particles exhibit excellent thermochromic properties with a narrow hysteresis of 5.9 °C and high stability. In addition, the phase transition temperature can be substantially reduced down to 28 °C by simply W doping.

Cation Disorder and Large Tetragonal Supercell Ordering in the Li-Rich Argyrodite Li7Zn0.5SiS6.

Project description:A tetragonal argyrodite with >7 mobile cations, Li7Zn0.5SiS6, is experimentally realized for the first time through solid state synthesis and exploration of the Li-Zn-Si-S phase diagram. The crystal structure of Li7Zn0.5SiS6 was solved ab initio from high-resolution X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data and supported by solid-state NMR. Li7Zn0.5SiS6 adopts a tetragonal I4 structure at room temperature with ordered Li and Zn positions and undergoes a transition above 411.1 K to a higher symmetry disordered F43m structure more typical of Li-containing argyrodites. Simultaneous occupation of four types of Li site (T5, T5a, T2, T4) at high temperature and five types of Li site (T5, T2, T4, T1, and a new trigonal planar T2a position) at room temperature is observed. This combination of sites forms interconnected Li pathways driven by the incorporation of Zn2+ into the Li sublattice and enables a range of possible jump processes. Zn2+ occupies the 48h T5 site in the high-temperature F43m structure, and a unique ordering pattern emerges in which only a subset of these T5 sites are occupied at room temperature in I4 Li7Zn0.5SiS6. The ionic conductivity, examined via AC impedance spectroscopy and VT-NMR, is 1.0(2) × 10-7 S cm-1 at room temperature and 4.3(4) × 10-4 S cm-1 at 503 K. The transition between the ordered I4 and disordered F43m structures is associated with a dramatic decrease in activation energy to 0.34(1) eV above 411 K. The incorporation of a small amount of Zn2+ exercises dramatic control of Li order in Li7Zn0.5SiS6 yielding a previously unseen distribution of Li sites, expanding our understanding of structure-property relationships in argyrodite materials.

Seeded-Growth of Silica Rods from Silica-Coated Particles.

Project description:Seeded growth of silica rods from colloidal particles has emerged as a facile method to develop novel complex particle structures with hybrid compositions and asymmetrical shapes. However, this seeded-growth technique has been so far limited to colloidal particles of only a few materials. Here, we first develop a general synthesis for the seeded-growth of silica rods from silica particles. We then demonstrate the growth of silica rods from silica-coated particles with three different cores which highlight the generality of this synthesis: fluorescently labeled organo-silica (fluorescein), metallic (Ag), and organic (PS latex). We also demonstrate the assembly of these particles into supraparticles. This general synthesis method can be extended to the growth of silica rods from any colloidal particle which can be coated with silica.

Growth mechanism and microstructures of Cu2O/PVP spherulites.

Project description:Cu2O spherulites are solvothermaly fabricated by using Cu(NO3)2 as the starting material and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a multifunctional growth agent. The specimens at different growth stages are investigated by using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, soft X-ray emission spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The formation mechanism of Cu2O spherulites is proposed accordingly. Hierarchically, the spherulites are composed of needle-like submicron-rods lying along the radial orientations. The submicron-rods are constructed by piling up of small Cu2O/PVP spheres. The embedded Cu2O nanocrystallites can generate a dipolar field in each along the [100] direction. They deposit at the surface of a negatively charged PVP-containing spherical core, and self-oriented along the radial directions. Therefore, all the Cu2O nanocrystallites would have their positively charged (100) facet facing to the core and their negatively charged (1̄00) facet turning towards to the spherulite surface, leading to a negatively charged surface of spherulites. Unlike randomly oriented nanocrystallites embedded in polymer microspheres, the spherulites would not undergo surface recrystallisation into a single crystal shell due to the restricted potential of local shift and rotation of the nanocrystallites by the Coulomb force from the core. This work provides new perspective towards the formation of spherulites and their structural properties.

Channel modulation and the mechanism of light adaptation in mouse rods.

Project description:Vertebrate photoreceptors are thought to adapt to light by a change in Ca(2+), which is postulated to mediate modulation of (1) excited rhodopsin (Rh*) by Ca(2+)-dependent binding of recoverin, (2) guanylyl cyclase activity via Ca(2+)-dependent GCAP proteins, and (3) cyclic nucleotide-gated channels by binding of Ca(2+)-calmodulin. Previous experiments genetically deleted recoverin and the GCAPs and showed that significant regulation of sensitivity survives removal of (1) and (2). We genetically deleted the channel Ca(2+)-calmodulin binding site in the mouse Mus musculus and found that removal of (3) alters response waveform, but removal of (3) or of (2) and (3) together still leaves much of adaptation intact. These experiments demonstrate that an important additional mechanism is required, which other experiments indicate may be regulation of phosphodiesterase 6 (PDE6). We therefore constructed a kinetic model in which light produces a Ca(2+)-mediated decrease in PDE6 decay rate, with the novel feature that both spontaneously activated and light-activated PDE6 are modulated. This model, together with Ca(2+)-dependent acceleration of guanylyl cyclase, can successfully account for changes in sensitivity and response waveform in background light.
