Terahertz optoacoustic detection of aqueous salt solutions.

ABSTRACT: Terahertz radiation has been used to detect aqueous salt solutions; however, strong absorption of water in terahertz regime limits the application of traditional terahertz techniques. Here, we present a novel method in analyzing aqueous salt solutions via terahertz optoacoustics. Terahertz optoacoustic signals can be manipulated by temperature control, which allows the dampening of water background and providing more information of solute. We demonstrate that dynamic and continuous terahertz optoacoustic detections of salt solutions with different solutes, concentrations, temperatures, and terahertz spectral frequencies shows the significant potential of this method in distinguishing different salt solutions and quantitatively analyzing salt concentrations. Terahertz optoacoustics may be a powerful tool for quantitative and label-free detection of aqueous salt solutions to further study the complicated aqueous solutions in terahertz regime.

Terahertz and infrared characteristic absorption spectra of aqueous glucose and fructose solutions.

Project description:In this paper, the terahertz (THz) and infrared (IR) characteristic absorption spectra of aqueous glucose solutions and aqueous fructose solutions with different concentrations were measured and studied. The absorption spectra of these two molecules in solid-state and in aqueous solutions were compared and analyzed, the significant effect of molecular adjacent environment on the molecular structure and vibrational mode was revealed. In addition, the THz and IR absorption spectra of these two isomers' aqueous solutions were also compared and explored. No obvious differences were found from their IR absorption features measured at room temperature, while their THz absorption spectra do have the differences, indicating THz characteristic absorption spectra more suitable for the detection and identification of aqueous glucose and fructose solutions. The results are helpful to understand the influence of aqueous solutions environment on the molecular structures and vibrational modes of the materials, and also provide a theoretical reference for the quantum chemical calculation of biological macromolecules.

Salt and Temperature Effects on Xanthan Gum Polysaccharide in Aqueous Solutions.

Project description:Xanthan gum (XG) is a carbohydrate polymer with anionic properties that is widely used as a rheology modifier in various applications, including foods and petroleum extraction. The aim was to investigate the effect of Na+, K+, and Ca2+ on the physicochemical properties of XG in an aqueous solution as a function of temperature. Huggins, Kraemer, and Rao models were applied to determine intrinsic viscosity, [η], by fitting the relative viscosity (ηrel) or specific viscosity (ηsp) of XG/water and XG/salt/water solutions. With increasing temperature in water, Rao 1 gave [η] the closest to the Huggins and Kraemer values. In water, [η] was more sensitive to temperature increase (~30% increase in [η], 20-50 °C) compared to salt solutions (~15-25% increase). At a constant temperature, salt counterions screened the XG side-chain-charged groups and decreased [η] by up to 60% over 0.05-100 mM salt. Overall, Ca2+ was much more effective than the monovalent cations in screening charge. As the salt valency and concentration increased, the XG coil radius decreased, making evident the effect of shielding the intramolecular and intermolecular XG anionic charge. The reduction in repulsive forces caused XG structural contraction. Further, higher temperatures led to chain expansion that facilitated increased intermolecular interactions, which worked against the salt effect.

Impact of hierarchical water dipole orderings on the dynamics of aqueous salt solutions.

Project description:Ions exhibit highly ion-specific complex behaviours when solvated in water, which remains a mystery despite the fundamental importance of ion solvation in nature, science, and technology. Here we explain these ion-specific properties by the ion-induced hierarchical dipolar, translational, and bond-orientational orderings of ion hydration shell under the competition between ion-water electrostatic interactions and inter-water hydrogen bonding. We first characterise this competition by a new length λHB(q), explaining the ion-specific effects on solution dynamics. Then, by continuously tuning ion size and charge, we find that the bond-orientational order of the ion hydration shell highly develops for specific ion size and charge combinations. This ordering drastically stabilises the hydration shell; its degree changes the water residence time around ions by 11 orders of magnitude for main-group ions. These findings are fundamental to ionic processes in aqueous solutions, providing a physical principle for electrolyte design and application.

SANS from Salt-Free Aqueous Solutions of Hydrophilic and Highly Charged Star-Branched Polyelectrolytes.

Project description:Scattering functions of sodium sulfonated polystyrene (NaPSS) star-branched polyelectrolytes with high sulfonation degrees were measured from their salt-free aqueous solutions, using the Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) technique. Whatever the concentration c, they display two maxima. The first, of abscissa q₁*, is related to a position order between star cores and scales as q₁* ∝ c1/3. The second, of abscissa q₂*, is also observed in the scattering function of a semi-dilute solution of NaPSS linear polyelectrolytes. In the dilute regime (c < c*, non-overlapping stars), peak abscissa does not depend on concentration c and is just an intramolecular characteristic associated with the electrostatic repulsion between arms of the same star. In the semi-dilute regime, due to the star interpenetration, the scattering function ⁻ through the peak position, reflects repulsion between arms of the same star or of different stars. The c threshold between these distinct c-dependencies of q₂* in the dilute and semi-dilute regimes is estimated as c*. Just as simple is the measurement of the geometrical radius R of the star obtained from the q₁* value at c* through the relation 2R = 2π/q₁*. By considering NaPSS stars of the same functionality with different degrees of polymerization per arm Na, we find R scaling linearly with Na, suggesting an elongated average conformation of the arms. This is in agreement with theoretical predictions and simulations. Meanwhile the value of q₂* measured in the dilute regime does not allow any inhomogeneous counterion distribution inside the stars to be revealed.

Simulation study of ion pairing in concentrated aqueous salt solutions with a polarizable force field.

Project description:The accuracy of empirical force fields is critical for meaningful molecular dynamics simulations of concentrated ionic solutions. Current models are typically developed on the basis of single ion properties such as the monohydrate energy in the gas phase, or the absolute hydration free energy at infinite dilution. However, the failure of these models to represent accurately the properties of concentrated solutions cannot be excluded. Here, these issues are illustrated for a polarizable potential based on classical Drude oscillators. To model accurately concentrated ionic solutions, the parameters of the potential functions are optimized to reproduce osmotic pressure data. The sodium-chloride potential of mean force in solution calculated from the empirically-adjusted model is consistent with the results from that calculated from ab initio CPMD simulations.

Ice VII from aqueous salt solutions: From a glass to a crystal with broken H-bonds.

Project description:It has been known for decades that certain aqueous salt solutions of LiCl and LiBr readily form glasses when cooled to below ?160?K. This fact has recently been exploited to produce a « salty » high-pressure ice form: When the glass is compressed at low temperatures to pressures higher than 4?GPa and subsequently warmed, it crystallizes into ice VII with the ionic species trapped inside the ice lattice. Here we report the extreme limit of salt incorporation into ice VII, using high pressure neutron diffraction and molecular dynamics simulations. We show that high-pressure crystallisation of aqueous solutions of LiCl?RH2O and LiBr?RH2O with R?=?5.6 leads to solids with strongly expanded volume, a destruction of the hydrogen-bond network with an isotropic distribution of water-dipole moments, as well as a crystal-to-amorphous transition on decompression. This highly unusual behaviour constitutes an interesting pathway from a glass to a crystal where translational periodicity is restored but the rotational degrees of freedom remaining completely random.

Ion enrichment on the hydrophobic carbon-based surface in aqueous salt solutions due to cation-? interactions.

Project description:By incorporating cation-? interactions to classic all-atoms force fields, we show that there is a clear enrichment of Na(+) on a carbon-based ? electron-rich surface in NaCl solutions using molecular dynamics simulations. Interestingly, Cl(-) is also enriched to some extend on the surface due to the electrostatic interaction between Na(+) and Cl(-), although the hydrated Cl(-)-? interaction is weak. The difference of the numbers of Na(+) and Cl(-) accumulated at the interface leads to a significant negatively charged behavior in the solution, especially in nanoscale systems. Moreover, we find that the accumulation of the cations at the interfaces is universal since other cations (Li(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Fe(2+), Co(2+), Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Cr(2+), and Pb(2+)) have similar adsorption behaviors. For comparison, as in usual force field without the proper consideration of cation-? interactions, the ions near the surfaces have a similar density of ions in the solution.

Detection and Quantification of Hydrogen Peroxide in Aqueous Solutions Using Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer.

Project description:The development of new analytical methods to accurately quantify hydrogen peroxide is of great interest. In the current study, we developed a new magnetic resonance (MR) method for noninvasively quantifying hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in aqueous solutions based on chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST), an emerging MRI contrast mechanism. Our method can detect H2O2 by its specific CEST signal at ∼6.2 ppm downfield from water resonance, with more than 1000 times signal amplification compared to the direct NMR detection. To improve the accuracy of quantification, we comprehensively investigated the effects of sample properties on CEST detection, including pH, temperature, and relaxation times. To accelerate the NMR measurement, we implemented an ultrafast Z-spectroscopic (UFZ) CEST method to boost the acquisition speed to 2 s per CEST spectrum. To accurately quantify H2O2 in unknown samples, we also implemented a standard addition method, which eliminated the need for predetermined calibration curves. Our results clearly demonstrate that the presented CEST-based technique is a simple, noninvasive, quick, and accurate method for quantifying H2O2 in aqueous solutions.

Protein aggregation in salt solutions.

Project description:Protein aggregation is broadly important in diseases and in formulations of biological drugs. Here, we develop a theoretical model for reversible protein-protein aggregation in salt solutions. We treat proteins as hard spheres having square-well-energy binding sites, using Wertheim's thermodynamic perturbation theory. The necessary condition required for such modeling to be realistic is that proteins in solution during the experiment remain in their compact form. Within this limitation our model gives accurate liquid-liquid coexistence curves for lysozyme and ? IIIa-crystallin solutions in respective buffers. It provides good fits to the cloud-point curves of lysozyme in buffer-salt mixtures as a function of the type and concentration of salt. It than predicts full coexistence curves, osmotic compressibilities, and second virial coefficients under such conditions. This treatment may also be relevant to protein crystallization.

Do aqueous solutions contain net charge?

Project description:Solutions with high pH values are sometimes thought to contain net negative charge because of an excess of OH- groups, while solutions with low pH values are thought opposite. To follow up on these speculations, we used a simple electrochemical cell to study three types of solution: electrolyzed waters with differing pH values; acids and bases with different pH values; and various salt solutions. When electrolyzed waters of various pH values were tested against water of pH 7, we found that acidic waters were indeed positively charged, while basic waters were negatively charged. We found much the same when standard acids and bases were compared to reference solutions: acidic solutions were positively charged while basic solutions were negatively charged. Various salts, including NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4, and K2SO4, were also tested against DI water (containing trace amounts of NaCl to lend conductivity). Surprisingly, all salts were found to be negatively charged, more so as their concentrations increased. This collection of results supports the hypothesis that at least some aqueous solutions may contain net charge.
