Cultural adaption and psychometric validation of the Danish Illness Identity Questionnaire (IIQ-DK) in adolescents and emerging adults with type 1 diabetes.

ABSTRACT:

Purpose

The Illness Identity Questionnaire (IIQ) captures the ways in which individuals integrate chronic illness into their identity. The objectives were to linguistically validate and culturally adapt a Danish language version of the IIQ, and to evaluate the psychometric properties of this Danish version.

Methods

IIQ was adapted through a forward-backward translation process, content validity assessment, and cognitive interviews (n = 5). Data for psychometric analysis were collected through an online Danish version of the IIQ (IIQ-DK). Data quality, internal consistency, and item correlations were assessed. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were conducted.

Results

Cognitive interviews resulted in re-wordings of two items. 1176 adolescents and emerging adults (15-26 years) with type 1 diabetes completed the IIQ-DK. Floor and ceiling effects were demonstrated for most items. Analysis showed good internal consistency of scales, as well as internal and discriminant item validity. CFA fit statistics after including correlated residuals were good for all scales. CFA showed acceptably high factor loadings for all items except one.

Conclusion

Results demonstrated good reliability and psychometric properties of the IIQ-DK, which may be forwarded to use in research and clinical practice as a robust instrument to measure illness identity in adolescents and emerging adults with type 1 diabetes.

Project description:Abstract Background Peyronie’s disease has an impact on men’s mental and physical health. Aim We sought to translate the Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire into Danish, adapt it to the Danish cultural setting, and test it in a Danish population. Methods Translation of the Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire was performed according to the guidelines for adapting health status measures for use in languages other than the source language by Beaton et al. The validated American Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire was developed to monitor patient symptoms after an intervention and to inspire a subsequent dialogue about physical and psychological symptoms with a healthcare provider, thereby allowing the patient and the healthcare professional to choose the best treatment. The expert committee agreed on a Danish version after cross-cultural adaptation. The Danish Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire was sent by electronic mail to a preselected group of 41 men with Peyronie’s disease. Outcomes After completing the questionnaire, 32 men participated in a video interview regarding the questionnaire and were asked to identify any problematic fields or areas open to misunderstanding. Results The Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire underwent major modifications in light of the comments of the first 10 respondents. Thereafter, only minor changes were made until data saturation was reached after 27 of the 32 respondents had been interviewed. In 87% of respondents Peyronie’s disease bothered from the last time they had intercourse, and 93% of the men experienced being bothered by having intercourse less often. Peyronie’s disease made 73% of respondents feel bodily discomfort, and 88% had intercourse less often than they used to have due to Peyronie’s disease. Clinical Implications The Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire is a valuable tool in the crucial task of addressing Peyronie’s disease, providing insight into the mental and sexual health problems as well as physical challenges faced by patients. Strengths and Limitations The interviewer’s modest experience in conducting interviews is believed to have been duly compensated for by continuous and accumulating learning-while-doing process because the same interviewer conducted all of the interviews and did so consecutively. Conclusions Danish men expressed satisfaction with the questionnaire and found it valuable as a tool when visiting the doctor for the first time.

Project description:The aim of the study was to conduct a first validation of three field practice experience scales intended to measure students' opportunities to learn through observation of other teachers, own practice and feedback on own practice of 12 key teaching activities while in field practice placement as part of teacher education programs. The scales were translated and adapted from the elementary teaching candidate survey from the Development of Ambitious Instruction project. Items were adapted to refer to the teaching subject students were training in, and the response scale was modified. A four-step translation-back-translation strategy was used, and subsequently the Danish and a Norwegian and Icelandic translations were mutually adjusted for meaning to facilitate later cross-Nordic studies. Participants were 345 Danish students in the teacher education program from one university college, who had been in at least one field practice placement. Data were collected using a targeted online survey during one month immediately following field placement. Data was analysed using the Rasch model. Each of the three field experience scales fitted a Rasch model, with no evidence against overall homogeneity of scores for low versus high scoring students, local dependence between items, or DIF in relation to level of field practice, campus, type of teacher education program, gender or age. Reliability of each scale was excellent for most subgroups, while the targeting of the scales to the study sample was not very good, as there were too few teaching activities occurring rarely during field practice (i.e. too few difficult items). For all three scales there were significant differences in mean scores dependent on level of field practice placement. Thus, while the scales should be expanded to get better coverage of students' opportunities to learn in relation to all the core teaching activities present in that are to be trained in the field practice placement, the very good psychometric properties of the three scales, shows promise for future research.

Project description:BackgroundFostering a strong professional identity (PI) enhances career fulfillment. In China, therapy education is undergoing development, integrating both Western and traditional health concepts, causing inconsistent PI among therapy students. To date, no validated tools exist to measure and monitor PI of Chinese therapy students. This study aimed to translate and validate the 9-item MacLeod Clark Professional Identity Scale (MCPIS-9) for this purpose.DesignThis study involved translation and cultural adaptation of the MCPIS-9, followed by a rigorous assessment of its model fit and psychometric properties using data collected via an online questionnaire.MethodsA forward- and backward- translation process was conducted. Content validity was evaluated using item-level content validity index (I-CVI) and scale level content validity index average method (S-CVI/Ave). Therapy students across all grades at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in China were eligible. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) examined the underlying factor structure. Model fit was evaluated through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR) and Root Mean Square of Error of Approximation (RMSEA). Convergent validity was assessed through Pearson's correlations coefficient (r) with the Professional Identity Scale for Health Students and Professionals (PISHSP). Internal consistency was examined using Cronbach's Alpha (Cα) and McDonald's Omega (ω).ResultsA total of 1054 students participated. Content validity was excellent (I-CVI = 0.86-1.0, S-CVI/Ave = 0.98). EFA indicated a two-factor structure with acceptable model fit (CFI = 0.978; TLI = 0.968; SRMR = 0.033; RMSEA = 0.063). Reliability was strong (Cα = 0.835; ω = 0.817). Convergent validity demonstrated a strong correlation (r = 0.75) with the PISHSP.ConclusionsThe Chinese MCPIS-9 is a reliable and valid tool for assessing PI among therapy students. Future research could focus on refining item 4 of this tool, potentially through further exploration of therapy students' perceptions of PI within the unique context of the Chinese healthcare system.

Project description:IntroductionPhysical activity level during pregnancy is unknown in Middle Eastern and North African countries, since no valid tools assessing it exist in Arabic. The aim of this study is to culturally adapt and translate to Arabic an internationally validated instrument, the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ), and to measure the physical activity of pregnant women using the adapted PPAQ, Arabic version. This tool is time-sparing, self-administered and is the only one taking into account childcare and household chores.MethodsAfter following the guidelines for translation and back-translation by certified translators, a committee composed of professionals in the field reviewed each item of the PPAQ, for its comprehensibility. This Arabic version of the PPAQ was tested on a sample of 179 pregnant Lebanese women, from different educational backgrounds, socioeconomic status and gestational ages.ResultsCross-cultural adaptations were applied on the newly translated PPAQ in Arabic version, thus questions referring to some types of outdoor activities were excluded from the final format. Our results reported that 51% and 1.7% of women engage respectively in light and high intensity physical activity, while 18% had a sedentary lifestyle. Occupational type of activities were significantly more performed by women having a higher education (p value 0.001), as opposed to those who attended only high school, who were physically more active in household activities (p value 0.038). Second trimester was a period where pregnant women were active for household, caregiving (p value 0.031), whereas women in their third trimester were physically more active in occupational activities (p value 0.001). Sport-oriented activities were performed by women reporting a good physical status (p value 0.03). Age and crowding index were significantly correlated with occupational, household and caregiving activities (p values 0.004, 0.008 respectively). No significant correlations were observed with pre-gestational body mass index and the physical activity levels.ConclusionA valid tool will help researchers in Arab countries identify physical activity levels of pregnant women and consequently emit specific guidelines relative to the importance and the benefits of a daily active lifestyle throughout gestation.

Project description:BackgroundIn recent decades, there has been a growing emphasis on involving patients in healthcare decision-making, driven by political, ethical, and research considerations. Although patient involvement is associated with improved health outcomes, understanding patient preferences regarding their role in decision-making is crucial for effective interventions. The Control Preferences Scale (CPS) measures patient preferences along a continuum from passive to active participation. However, its application in Denmark necessitates translation and cultural adaptation.MethodologyThis study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the CPS for Danish use across diverse healthcare settings: acute care, cancer care, elective surgery, chronic medical treatment, and parental involvement in pediatric care. Following a cross-sectional design, the translation process was systematically planned and executed using Beaton's guidelines, including the five stages: forward and back translation, synthesis, expert review, and pre-testing.ResultsThe translation and adaption process was carried out successfully. Few linguistic challenges were identified and resolved by the expert review. The findings of the pre-testing indicated high acceptability and usability of the adapted CPS among 152 Danish patients and parents. The collaborative role emerged as the most preferred across settings (69.8%), with passive roles more prevalent among cancer patients (30%) and parents waiting with their child to see a pediatrician (23.3%). Notable, more women preferred collaborative or active roles (83.9%) than men (73.9%). The content validity assessment yielded positive feedback, affirming the relevance and comprehensiveness of the CPS.ConclusionsIn summary, the adaptation and validation of the CPS for Danish use proved successful, providing a valuable tool for assessing patient's role preferences in healthcare decision-making. However, future studies are recommended to ensure construct validity and reliability through psychometric testing.

Project description:BackgroundSelf-reported measures are relevant both for the clinic and for health evaluation because they provide an interpretation of quality parameters. Women who experience labour can express themselves through these measures, identifying indicators that need improvement.ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to adapt the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire to the Portuguese context and to determine its psychometric properties.MethodA methodological study carried out with a convenience sample where the participants were 161 female users of a hospital in southern Portugal. They were aged between 20 and 43 years (M = 31.05, SD = 4.87) and answered a questionnaire approximately 48 h postpartum, preserving the ethical principles. The original instrument, with 22 items, underwent the linguistic and cultural adequacy process.ResultsFactor analysis with Varimax rotation was performed, revealing a set of 19 items with factor weights above .400. The set of items remained four-dimensional as the original, explaining 62.517% of the variance. In the retest, the reliability results showed that similar characteristics to the original study are maintained in the two subscales that express 'Participation' (three items) and 'Professional Support' (four items), with internal consistency values of .807 and .782. The 'Own Performance' and 'Own Threshold' subscales were elaborated from the results of the Varimax rotation, presenting Cronbach's alpha coefficients of .840 and 714, respectively. The total scale showed alpha values of .873 and .823 in the test and retest, respectively. Time stability showed a positive association, with r = .659 (p < .001). Accuracy through the split-half method reached an alpha value of .880 with Spearman-Brown correction. The floor effect was high in the 'Participation' subscale, both in the test and in the retest. Convergent validity between the instrument and the 'Index of Strategies for Pain Relief in Labour' discrete variable showed a Spearman's rho value of .209 (p = .011) in the total scale. In discriminating validity, the Mann-Whitney test reveals that the women who recognize interactions with the midwife have more favourable scores in Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (U = 2748.000; Z = 2.905; p = .004).ConclusionThe current version in European Portuguese suggests that it is a valid and reliable measure. This study may facilitate other validation processes in Lusophony countries.
