Project description:Water contaminated with heavy metal ions is extremely poisonous and threatens living organisms. Therefore, scientists place a premium on removing heavy metal ions from water that has already been contaminated. Removing metal ions from water typically involves the use of nanomaterials. Chitosan was made by extracting it from shrimp shells and combining it with a 3 : 1 ratio of synthetically produced AgNPs/GO. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate an AgNPs/GO/chitosan nanocomposite (XRD). A number of studies must be run to determine the optimal pH, adsorbent quantity, retention period, stirring speed, temperature, and initial concentration. The studies were conducted in a variety of ways. The isotherms of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich were utilized. The industrial wastewater was used in the column adsorption experiment, and the flow rates and column bed heights were varied. An optimum contact time, pH, and adsorbent dosage for Mn(ii) were determined. At 30 minutes, pH 6, and 0.05 grams of Mn(ii) adsorbent per 100 ml, with agitation at 250 rpm, room temperature of 30 °C, and an initial concentration of 40 ppm, the best conditions were discovered. A positive correlation coefficient finding (R 2 = 0.925) indicates a good fit for Mn, according to equilibrium studies (II). The pseudo-second-order active model was connected to data that suited the pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order models. In the intra-particle diffusion model, the mechanism must proceed through four phases before equilibrium is reached. In an industrial adsorbent column, the adsorbent was put to the test. The periodicity test demonstrates that the nanocomposite's adsorption capability can be recovered by washing it with 0.1 M HCl. Mn(ii) adsorbed on AgNPs/GO/Chitosan after four cycles was only 20%, insufficient for additional adsorption tests. The repeated cycles that led to the partial loss of the adsorbate may have reduced the adsorbent material's efficacy.

Project description:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) and pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) suffer from poor charge transport and a high recombination effect under visible light irradiation. This study investigates the design and production of a 2D graphene-like r-GO/GO coupled α-Fe2O3/Fe2TiO5 heterojunction composite with better charge separation. It uses a simple sonochemical and hydrothermal approach followed by L-ascorbic acid chemical reduction pathway. The advantageous band offset of the α-Fe2O3/Fe2TiO5 (TF) nanocomposite between α-Fe2O3 and Fe2TiO5 forms a Type-II heterojunction at the Fe2O3/Fe2TiO5 interface, which efficiently promotes electron-hole separation. Importantly, very corrosive acid leachate resulting from the hydrochloric acid leaching of ilmenite sand, was successfully exploited to fabricate α-Fe2O3/Fe2TiO5 heterojunction. In this paper, a straightforward synthesis strategy was employed to create 2D graphene-like reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) from Ceylon graphite. The two-step process comprises oxidation of graphite to graphene oxide (GO) using the improved Hummer's method, followed by controlled reduction of GO to r-GO using L-ascorbic acid. Before the reduction of GO to the r-GO, the surface of TF heterojunction was coupled with GO and was allowed for the controlled L-ascorbic acid reduction to yield r-GO/GO/α-Fe2O3/Fe2TiO5 nanocomposite. Under visible light illumination, the photocatalytic performance of the 30% GO/TF loaded composite material greatly improved (1240 Wcm-2). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) examined the morphological characteristics of fabricated composites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) served to analyze the structural features of the produced composites.

Project description:Concomitant deprotonation and metalation of hexadentate ligand platform (tbs)LH6 ((tbs)LH6 = 1,3,5-C6H9(NHC6H4-o-NHSiMe2(t)Bu)3) with divalent transition metal starting materials Fe2(Mes)4 (Mes = mesityl) or Mn3(Mes)6 in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) resulted in isolation of homotrinuclear complexes ((tbs)L)Fe3(THF) and ((tbs)L)Mn3(THF), respectively. In the absence of coordinating solvent (THF), the deprotonation and metalation exclusively afforded dinuclear complexes of the type ((tbs)LH2)M2 (M = Fe or Mn). The resulting dinuclear species were utilized as synthons to prepare bimetallic trinuclear clusters. Treatment of ((tbs)LH2)Fe2 complex with divalent Mn source (Mn2(N(SiMe3)2)4) afforded the bimetallic complex ((tbs)L)Fe2Mn(THF), which established the ability of hexamine ligand (tbs)LH6 to support mixed metal clusters. The substitutional homogeneity of ((tbs)L)Fe2Mn(THF) was determined by (1)H NMR, (57)Fe Mössbauer, and X-ray fluorescence. Anomalous scattering measurements were critical for the unambiguous assignment of the trinuclear core composition. Heating a solution of ((tbs)LH2)Mn2 with a stoichiometric amount of Fe2(Mes)4 (0.5 mol equiv) affords a mixture of both ((tbs)L)Mn2Fe(THF) and ((tbs)L)Fe2Mn(THF) as a result of the thermodynamic preference for heavier metal substitution within the hexa-anilido ligand framework. These results demonstrate for the first time the assembly of mixed metal cluster synthesis in an unbiased ligand platform.

Project description:In this study, magnetic sulfur-doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4:S NPs) were applied as adsorbents for the removal of As(v). Fe3O4:S NPs were fabricated by a two-step route, which included low-temperature mixing and high-temperature sintering. The as-prepared Fe3O4:S NPs could effectively remove As(v) under a wide pH range of 2-10 and presented a high As(v) adsorption capacity of 58.38 mg g-1, which was much better than undoped Fe3O4 nanoparticles (20.24 mg g-1). Adsorption experiments exhibited a pseudo-second-order model of adsorption kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model of adsorption isotherms. Additionally, the coexisting ions such as NO3 -, SO4 2-, and CO3 2- had no significant effect on As(v) adsorption and the adsorbent worked well in actual smelting wastewater. XPS and FTIR spectra of Fe3O4:S NPs before and after As(v) adsorption showed that Fe-OH groups played a significant role in the adsorption mechanisms. Moreover, the magnetic Fe3O4:S NPs adsorbents after adsorption could be rapidly separated from wastewater with an external magnetic field. Therefore, Fe3O4:S NPs could be an ideal candidate for the removal of As(v) from water.

Project description:Lysozyme (LYS) applications encompass anti-bacterial activity, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this work, a porous framework that was based on the polymerization of pyrrole (PPy) in the presence of multi-functional graphene oxide/iron oxide composite (GO@Fe3O4) has been developed. Oxygen-containing and amine groups that were present in the nanocomposite were availed to assembly LYS as the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) template. The synthesized material (MIPPy/GO@Fe3O4) was electrodeposited on top of a gold microelectrode array. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to confirm the adequate preparation of GO@Fe3O4, and the characterization of the resulting molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor (MIECS) was carried out by electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS), FT-IR analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The impedimetric responses were analyzed mathematically by fitting to a Q(Q(RW)) equivalent circuit and quantitative determination of LYS was obtained in a linear range from 1 pg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL, presenting good precision (RSD ≈ 10%, n = 5) and low limit of detection (LOD = 0.009 pg/mL). The fabrication of this device is relatively simple, scalable, rapid, and economical, and the sensor can be used up to nine times without disintegration. The MIECS was successfully applied to the determination of LYS in fresh chicken egg white sample and in a commercial drug, resulting in a straightforward platform for the routine monitoring of LYS.

Project description:In this study, the preparation of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals via a facile non-aqueous sol-gel route and their characterization are reported. The 3-4 nm particles are readily dispersable in aqueous media and show excellent photoreactivity in terms of rhodamine B degradation. The catalytic performance can be further increased considerably by doping with iron and UV-light irradiation as a pre-treatment. The effect of surface ligands (blocked adsorption sites, surface defects etc.) on the photoreactivity was thoroughly probed using thermogravimetric analysis combined with mass spectrometry. Photoelectrochemical characterization of thin-film electrodes made from the same TiO2 nanocrystals showed the opposite trend to the catalytic experiments, that is, a strong decrease in photocurrent and quantum efficiency upon doping due to introduction of shallow defect states.

Project description:Soft magnetic composite (SMC) cores have been obtained by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) using pseudo core-shell powders. Pseudo core-shell powders are formed by a core of soft magnetic particle (nanocrystalline permalloy or supermalloy) surrounded by a thin layer (shell) of nanosized soft ferrite (Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4). Three compositions of pseudo core-shell powders were prepared, with 1, 2 and 3 wt.% of manganese-zinc mixt ferrite. The pseudo core-shell powders were compacted by SPS at temperatures between 500 and 700 °C, with a holding time ranging from 0 to 10 min. Several techniques have been used for characterization of the samples, both, powders and compacts X-ray diffraction (XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), magnetic hysteresis measurements (DC and AC) and electrical resistivity. The electrical resistivity is in the order of 1 × 10-2 Ωm, 3-4 orders of magnitude higher than supermalloy electrical resistivity. The SPS at lower temperatures (500 °C) conserves the initial phases of the composite, but increasing the sintering temperature and/or sintering time produces a solid-state reaction between the alloy and ferrite phases, with negative consequence on the magnetic properties of the compacts. The initial relative permeability is around 40 and remains constant until to 2000 Hz. The power losses are lower than 2 W/kg until to 2000 Hz.

Project description:Incorporating spin functionality into a semiconductor core-shell nanowire that offers immunity from the substrate effect is a highly desirable step for its application in next generation spintronics. Here, using first-principles density functional theory that does not make any assumptions of the electronic structure, we predict that a very small amount of Mn dopants in the core region of the wire can transform the Ge-Si core-shell semiconductor nanowire into a half-metallic ferromagnet that is stable at room temperature. The energy band structures reveal a semiconducting behavior for one spin direction while the metallic behavior for the other, indicating 100% spin polarization at the Fermi energy. No measurable shifts in energy levels in the vicinity of Fermi energy are found due to spin-orbit coupling, which suggests that the spin coherence length can be much higher in this material. To further assess the use of this material in a practical device setting, we have used a quantum transport approach to calculate the spin-filtering efficiency for a channel made out of a finite nanowire segment. Our calculations yield an efficiency more than 90%, which further confirms the excellent spin-selective properties of our newly tailored Mn-doped Ge-core/Si-shell nanowires.

Project description:Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a fascinating semiconductor material with many applications such as adsorption, photocatalysis, sensor, and antibacterial activities. By using a poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer as a capping agent and metal oxides (iron and manganese) as a couple, the porous PVA-aided Zn/Fe/Mn ternary oxide nanocomposite material (PTMO-NCM) was synthesized. The thermal, optical, crystallinity, chemical bonding, porosity, morphological, charge transfer properties of the synthesized materials were confirmed by DTG/DSC, UV-Vis-DRS, XRD, FT-IR, BET, SEM-EDAX/TEM-HRTEM-SAED, and CV/EIS/amperometric analytical techniques, respectively. The PTMO-NCM showed an enhanced surface area and charge transfer capability, compared to ZnO. Using the XRD pattern and TEM image analysis, the crystalline size of the materials was confirmed to be in the nanometer range. The porosity and superior charge transfer capabilities of the PTMO-NCM were confirmed from the BET, HRTEM (IFFT)/SAED, and CV/EIS analysis. The adsorption kinetics (adsorption reaction/adsorption diffusion) and adsorption isotherm test confirmed the presence of a chemisorption type of adsorbate/methylene blue dye-adsorbent/PTMO-NCM interaction. The photocatalytic performance was tested on the Congo red and Acid Orange-8 dyes. The superior ascorbic acid sensing capability of the material was understood from CV and amperometric analysis. The noble antibacterial activities of the material were also confirmed on both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Project description:Plastics contribute a magnificent role to modern civilization, but the waste becomes a huge burden to ecology and remains intact for a thousand years. Hence, the recent movement is shifted to biodegradable plastic. In this study, an attempt was made to introduce an added value to the environment where the bio-plasticized materials were used for phosphate removal. A G-plasticized magnetic starch-based Fe3O4 clay polymer nanocomposite (PNC) was synthesized to remove phosphate from the aqueous solution. It was synthesized from activated carbon (AC), coated iron oxide nanoparticles (CIONP), nanoclay (NC), and glycerol (G) as a plasticizer. The synthesized adsorbents were characterized with UV-Vis, SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The PNC and constituent (CIONP) were tested for phosphate removal through batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption capacity increases with increasing the adsorbent dose and decreases with an increase in phosphate concentration. The synthesized PNC effectively raised the constituent optimum phosphate ion adsorption pH from acidic (pH = 3) to slightly acidic (pH = 6). At the optimal pH, the CIONP and PNC maximum phosphate adsorption capacity (MPAC) was 3.12 and 2.31 mg P/g, respectively. In addition, the phosphate removal efficiency of PNC (45-95% at pH 6) was comparable to CIONP (58-97% at pH 3) under an initial 2-100 mg P/L. The adsorbents adsorption kinetics and isotherm study best described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model, in turn. The SEM images support the conclusion, in which the PNC shows a heterogenous porous surface. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms were mainly described by multilayer and chemical adsorption, such as electrostatic and ion exchange. It can be concluded that there is a positive synergistic effect between the biopolymer (starch) and nanomaterials that form the PNC. This study results propose the multiple added values of modified bio-plasticized material (with adsorbent) for environmental (phosphate) remediation.
