Magnetotail Ion Structuring by Kinetic Ballooning-Interchange Instability.

ABSTRACT: By combining three-probe THEMIS observations and 3-D Particle-in-Cell simulations, we identify key structures on the ion gyroradius scale that occur in connection with ballooning-interchange instability heads in the Earth's magnetotail. The mesoscale structures occur at sites of strong ion velocity shear and vorticity where the thermal ion Larmor radius is about half of the width of the head. Finer structures occur at the smaller scales characterizing the wavelength of the electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves generated at the heads. These two processes act to erode and thin the current sheet, thereby forming a local magnetotail configuration that is favorable for reconnection.

Ballooning-Interchange Instability in the Near-Earth Plasma Sheet and Auroral Beads: Global Magnetospheric Modeling at the Limit of the MHD Approximation.

Project description:Explosive magnetotail activity has long been understood in the context of its auroral manifestations. While global models have been used to interpret and understand many magnetospheric processes, the temporal and spatial scales of some auroral forms have been inaccessible to global modeling creating a gulf between observational and theoretical studies of these phenomena. We present here an important step toward bridging this gulf using a newly developed global magnetosphere-ionosphere model with resolution capturing ≲ 30 km azimuthal scales in the auroral zone. In a global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of the growth phase of a synthetic substorm, we find the self-consistent formation and destabilization of localized magnetic field minima in the near-Earth magnetotail. We demonstrate that this destabilization is due to ballooning-interchange instability which drives earthward entropy bubbles with embedded magnetic fronts. Finally, we show that these bubbles create localized field-aligned current structures that manifest in the ionosphere with properties matching observed auroral beads.

Ion temperature anisotropy across a magnetotail reconnection jet.

Project description:A significant fraction of the energy released by magnetotail reconnection appears to go into ion heating, but this heating is generally anisotropic. We examine ARTEMIS dual-spacecraft observations of a long-duration magnetotail exhaust generated by antiparallel reconnection in conjunction with particle-in-cell simulations, showing spatial variations in the anisotropy across the outflow far (>100di ) downstream of the X line. A consistent pattern is found in both the spacecraft data and the simulations: While the total temperature across the exhaust is rather constant, near the boundaries Ti,|| dominates. The plasma is well above the firehose threshold within patchy spatial regions at |BX |∈[0.1,0.5]B0, suggesting that the drive for the instability is strong and the instability is too weak to relax the anisotropy. At the midplane ( |BX|≲0.1B0), Ti,⊥>Ti,|| and ions undergo Speiser-like motion despite the large distance from the X line.

A New Perspective on Magnetotail Electron and Ion Divergent Flows: MMS Observations.

Project description:Fast divergent flows of electrons and ions in the magnetotail plasma sheet are conventionally interpreted as a key reconnection signature caused by the magnetic topology change at the X-line. Therefore, reversals of the x-component (V x⊥) of the plasma flow perpendicular to the magnetic field must correlate with the sign changes in the north-south component of the magnetic field (B z ). Here we present observations of the flow reversals that take place with no correlated B z reversals. We report six such events, which were measured with the high-resolution plasma and fields instruments of the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. We found that electron flow reversals in the absence of B z reversals (a) have amplitudes of ∼1,000-2,000 km s-1 and durations of a few seconds; (b) are embedded into larger-scale ion flow reversals with enhanced ion agyrotropy; and (c) compared with conventional reconnection outflows around the electron diffusion regions (EDRs), have less (if ever) pronounced electron agyrotropy, dawnward electron flow amplitude, and electric field strength toward the neutral sheet, although their energy conversion parameters, including the Joule heating rate, are quite substantial. These results suggest that such flow reversals develop in the ion-demagnetization regions away from electron-scale current sheets, in particular the EDRs, and yet they play an important role in the energy conversion. These divergent flows are interpreted as precursors of the flow-driven reconnection onsets provided by the ion tearing or the ballooning/interchange instability.

Closed magnetic topology in the Venusian magnetotail and ion escape at Venus.

Project description:Venus, lacking an intrinsic global dipole magnetic field, serves as a textbook example of an induced magnetosphere, formed by interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) enveloping the planet. Yet, various aspects of its magnetospheric dynamics and planetary ion outflows are complex and not well understood. Here we analyze plasma and magnetic field data acquired during the fourth Venus flyby of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission and show evidence for closed topology in the nightside and downstream portion of the Venus magnetosphere (i.e., the magnetotail). The formation of the closed topology involves magnetic reconnection-a process rarely observed at non-magnetized planets. In addition, our study provides an evidence linking the cold Venusian ion flow in the magnetotail directly to magnetic connectivity to the ionosphere, akin to observations at Mars. These findings not only help the understanding of the complex ion flow patterns at Venus but also suggest that magnetic topology is one piece of key information for resolving ion escape mechanisms and thus the atmospheric evolution across various planetary environments and exoplanets.

Properties of Ion-Inertial Scale Plasmoids Observed by the Juno Spacecraft in the Jovian Magnetotail.

Project description:We expand on previous observations of magnetic reconnection in Jupiter's magnetosphere by constructing a survey of ion-inertial scale plasmoids in the Jovian magnetotail. We developed an automated detection algorithm to identify reversals in the Bθ component and performed the minimum variance analysis for each identified plasmoid to characterize its helical structure. The magnetic field observations were complemented by data collected using the Juno Waves instrument, which is used to estimate the total electron density, and the JEDI energetic particle detectors. We identified 87 plasmoids with "peak-to-peak" durations between 10 and 300 s. Thirty-one plasmoids possessed a core field and were classified as flux-ropes. The other 56 plasmoids had minimum field strength at their centers and were termed O-lines. Out of the 87 plasmoids, 58 had in situ signatures shorter than 60 s, despite the algorithm's upper limit being 300 s, suggesting that smaller plasmoids with shorter durations were more likely to be detected by Juno. We estimate the diameter of these plasmoids assuming a circular cross section and a travel speed equal to the Alfven speed in the surrounding lobes. Using the electron density inferred by Waves, we contend that these plasmoid diameters were within an order of the local ion-inertial length. Our results demonstrate that magnetic reconnection in the Jovian magnetotail occurs at ion scales like in other space environments. We show that ion-scale plasmoids would need to be released every 0.1 s or less to match the canonical 1 ton/s rate of plasma production due to Io.

Explosive Magnetotail Activity.

Project description:Modes and manifestations of the explosive activity in the Earth's magnetotail, as well as its onset mechanisms and key pre-onset conditions are reviewed. Two mechanisms for the generation of the pre-onset current sheet are discussed, namely magnetic flux addition to the tail lobes, or other high-latitude perturbations, and magnetic flux evacuation from the near-Earth tail associated with dayside reconnection. Reconnection onset may require stretching and thinning of the sheet down to electron scales. It may also start in thicker sheets in regions with a tailward gradient of the equatorial magnetic field Bz ; in this case it begins as an ideal-MHD instability followed by the generation of bursty bulk flows and dipolarization fronts. Indeed, remote sensing and global MHD modeling show the formation of tail regions with increased Bz , prone to magnetic reconnection, ballooning/interchange and flapping instabilities. While interchange instability may also develop in such thicker sheets, it may grow more slowly compared to tearing and cause secondary reconnection locally in the dawn-dusk direction. Post-onset transients include bursty flows and dipolarization fronts, micro-instabilities of lower-hybrid-drift and whistler waves, as well as damped global flux tube oscillations in the near-Earth region. They convert the stretched tail magnetic field energy into bulk plasma acceleration and collisionless heating, excitation of a broad spectrum of plasma waves, and collisional dissipation in the ionosphere. Collisionless heating involves ion reflection from fronts, Fermi, betatron as well as other, non-adiabatic, mechanisms. Ionospheric manifestations of some of these magnetotail phenomena are discussed. Explosive plasma phenomena observed in the laboratory, the solar corona and solar wind are also discussed.

Kinetic Pathways to Gelation and Effects of Flow-Induced Structuring in Depletion Gels.

Project description:The kinetic pathways to gelation and the effects of flow-induced restructuring are studied here in depletion flocculated gels with short-ranged attractions, both experimentally and using computer simulations. In the experiments, we first carefully diffuse a screening organic salt to destabilize colloid-polymer mixtures and form a gel. We hence avoid flow history effects, typical of traditional mixing protocols. The initial gelation phases are then accessible and observed by time-resolved confocal microscopy. These insights show that quiescent gelation reduces heterogeneity and strand size with increasing attraction strength, with deeper quenches leading to earlier arrest. These findings are consistent with the simulations which include long-range hydrodynamic interactions. We then compare these results with gels formed by high-rate preshear followed by cessation of colloid-polymer-salt mixtures. The obtained microstructures do not seem in this case to depend on depletant concentration. Indeed, confocal images reveal that shear flow significantly impacts gel structure, from fluidization at high shear rates to dense heterogeneous aggregates formation at lower rates. We especially show how the heterogeneity is controlled by the strength of the flow relative to the attraction forces between the colloids. This study highlights the subtleties behind the preparation protocols of colloidal gels. In particular, it shows that differences in kinetic aggregation pathways can overshadow attraction effects, such as those caused by varying flow conditions during mixing at different attraction strengths. These insights provide a framework for understanding gelation kinetics and optimizing structural reproducibility in colloidal gel experiments.

Spinodal Decomposition Method for Structuring Germanium-Carbon Li-Ion Battery Anodes.

Project description:To increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), high-capacity anodes which alloy with Li ions at a low voltage against Li/Li+ have been actively pursued. So far, Si has been studied the most extensively because of its high specific capacity and cost efficiency; however, Ge is an interesting alternative. While the theoretical specific capacity of Ge (1600 mAh g-1) is only half that of Si, its density is more than twice as high (Ge, 5.3 g cm-3; Si, 2.33 g cm-3), and therefore the charge stored per volume is better than that of Si. In addition, Ge has a 400 times higher ionic diffusivity and 4 orders of magnitude higher electronic conductivity compared to Si. However, similarly to Si, Ge needs to be structured in order to manage stresses induced during lithiation and many reports have achieved sufficient areal loadings to be commercially viable. In this work, spinodal decomposition is used to make secondary particles of about 2 μm in diameter that consist of a mixture of ∼30 nm Ge nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix. The secondary structure of these germanium-carbon particles allows for specific capacities of over 1100 mAh g-1 and a capacity retention of 91.8% after 100 cycles. Finally, high packing densities of ∼1.67 g cm-3 are achieved in blended electrodes by creating a bimodal size distribution with natural graphite.

Nano-structuring, surface and bulk modification with a focused helium ion beam.

Project description:We investigate the ability of a focused helium ion beam to selectively modify and mill materials. The sub nanometer probe size of the helium ion microscope used provides lateral control not previously available for helium ion irradiation experiments. At high incidence angles the helium ions were found to remove surface material from a silicon lamella leaving the subsurface structure intact for further analysis. Surface roughness and contaminants were both reduced by the irradiation process. Fabrication is also realized with a high level of patterning acuity. Implantation of helium beneath the surface of the sample is visualized in cross section allowing direct observation of the extended effects of high dose irradiation. The effect of the irradiation on the crystal structure of the material is presented. Applications of the sample modification process are presented and further prospects discussed.

Kinetic effects on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in ion-to-magnetohydrodynamic scale transverse velocity shear layers: Particle simulations.

Project description:Ion-to-magnetohydrodynamic scale physics of the transverse velocity shear layer and associated Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) in a homogeneous, collisionless plasma are investigated by means of full particle simulations. The shear layer is broadened to reach a kinetic equilibrium when its initial thickness is close to the gyrodiameter of ions crossing the layer, namely, of ion-kinetic scale. The broadened thickness is larger in B⋅Ω<0 case than in B⋅Ω>0 case, where Ω is the vorticity at the layer. This is because the convective electric field, which points out of (into) the layer for B⋅Ω<0 (B⋅Ω>0), extends (reduces) the gyrodiameters. Since the kinetic equilibrium is established before the KHI onset, the KHI growth rate depends on the broadened thickness. In the saturation phase of the KHI, the ion vortex flow is strengthened (weakened) for B⋅Ω<0 (B⋅Ω>0), due to ion centrifugal drift along the rotational plasma flow. In ion inertial scale vortices, this drift effect is crucial in altering the ion vortex size. These results indicate that the KHI at Mercury-like ion-scale magnetospheric boundaries could show clear dawn-dusk asymmetries in both its linear and nonlinear growth.
