Tailoring the Properties of Optical Force Probes for Polymer Mechanochemistry.

ABSTRACT: The correlation of mechanical properties of polymer materials with those of their molecular constituents is the foundation for their holistic comprehension and eventually for improved material designs and syntheses. Over the last decade, optical force probes (OFPs) were developed, shedding light on various unique mechanical behaviors of materials. The properties of polymers are diverse, ranging from soft hydrogels to ultra-tough composites, from purely elastic rubbers to viscous colloidal solutions, and from transparent glasses to super black dyed coatings. Only very recently, researchers started to develop tailored OFP solutions that account for such material requirements in energy (both light and force), in time, and in their spatially detectable resolution. We here highlight notable recent examples and identify future challenges in this emergent field.

Tailoring Optical Gradient Force and Optical Scattering and Absorption Force.

Project description:The introduction of the concept of gradient force and scattering and absorption force is an important milestone in optical trapping. However the profiles of these forces are usually unknown, even for standard setups. Here, we successfully calculated them analytically via multipole expansion and numerically via Mie theory and fast Fourier transform. The former provides physical insight, while the latter is highly accurate and efficient. A recipe to create truly conservative energy landscapes is presented. These may open up qualitatively new features in optical manipulation.

Polymer Patterning with Self-Heating Atomic Force Microscope Probes.

Project description:Scanning probe-assisted patterning methods already demonstrated a high degree of capabilities on submicrometer scales. However, the throughput is still far from its potential because of complexity or fragility of the probes for exploiting thermal effects, chemical reactions, and voltage-induced processes in various patterning operations. Here, we present a new approach to thermomechanical patterning by implementing a multitasking atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe: the functionalized planar probes. In this method, we can generate a tunable thermal gradient between the tip and the sample, wherein they remain in the noncontact regime. In principle, the capillary instability provoked by the van der Waals interaction yields a pull-off force toward the tip. Hence, locally rising protrusions form features at any selected position on a polymer surface without any chemical reaction or irreversible transformation. These multitasking probe-integrated AFMs can pave the way for a remarkable freedom in determining the operation regime on submicrometer surface-patterning applications.

Empowering self-reporting polymer blends with orthogonal optical properties responsive in a broader force range.

Project description:Self-reporting polymers, which can indicate damage with perceptible optical signals in a tailored force range, are useful as stress-sensitive sensors. We demonstrate a simple approach to realize this function by embedding two distinct mechanophores - rhodamine (Rh) and bis(adamantyl)-1,2-dioxetane (Ad), in polyurethane/polylactic acid blends. The deformed blends generate red coloration and red chemiluminescence. Such a unique dual-responsive behavior was evaluated by solid-state UV-vis spectroscopy, macroscopic tensile tests with in situ RGB and light intensity analyses, which supported a stress-correlated occurrence of the ring-opening of Rh, the scission of Ad and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer process between the respective mechanochemical species. Complementarity stemming from the difference in properties and manifestations of the two mechanophores is essential. That is, the more labile Rh allows shifting the appreciable optical changes to a much lower force threshold; the transient nature and high dynamic range of mechanochemiluminescence from Ad map in real time where and when many of the covalently incorporated dioxetane bonds break; besides, the disrupted yet non-scissile structure of Rh acts as a fluorescent acceptor to effectively harvest chemiluminescence from ruptured Ad. The current strategy is thus empowering multi-functional mechano-responsive polymers with greatly improved sensitivity and resolution for multimodal stress reporting.

Mechanochemistry: A Force of Synthesis.

Project description:The past decade has seen a reawakening of solid-state approaches to chemical synthesis, driven by the search for new, cleaner synthetic methodologies. Mechanochemistry, i.e., chemical transformations initiated or sustained by mechanical force, has been advancing particularly rapidly, from a laboratory curiosity to a widely applicable technique that not only enables a cleaner route to chemical transformations but offers completely new opportunities in making and screening for molecules and materials. This Outlook provides a brief overview of the recent achievements and opportunities created by mechanochemistry, including access to materials, molecular targets, and synthetic strategies that are hard or even impossible to access by conventional means.

Tailoring optical properties and stimulated emission in nanostructured polythiophene.

Project description:Polythiophenes are the most widely utilized semiconducting polymers in organic electronics, but they are scarcely exploited in photonics due to their high photo-induced absorption caused by interchain polaron pairs, which prevents the establishment of a window of net optical gain. Here we study the photophysics of poly(3-hexylthiophene) configured with different degrees of supramolecular ordering, spin-coated thin films and templated nanowires, and find marked differences in their optical properties. Transient absorption measurements evidence a partially-polarized stimulated emission band in the nanowire samples, in contrast with the photo-induced absorption band observed in spin-coated thin films. In combination with theoretical modeling, our experimental results reveal the origin of the primary photoexcitations dominating the dynamics for different supramolecular ordering, with singlet excitons in the nanostructured samples superseding the presence of polaron pairs, which are present in the disordered films. Our approach demonstrates a viable strategy to direct optical properties through structural control, and the observation of optical gain opens the possibility to the use of polythiophene nanostructures as building blocks of organic optical amplifiers and active photonic devices.

Tailoring the optical and dynamic properties of iminothioindoxyl photoswitches through acidochromism.

Project description:Multi-responsive functional molecules are key for obtaining user-defined control of the properties and functions of chemical and biological systems. In this respect, pH-responsive photochromes, whose switching can be directed with light and acid-base equilibria, have emerged as highly attractive molecular units. The challenge in their design comes from the need to accommodate application-defined boundary conditions for both light- and protonation-responsivity. Here we combine time-resolved spectroscopic studies, on time scales ranging from femtoseconds to seconds, with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate and apply the acidochromism of a recently designed iminothioindoxyl (ITI) photoswitch. We show that protonation of the thermally stable Z isomer leads to a strong batochromically-shifted absorption band, allowing for fast isomerization to the metastable E isomer with light in the 500-600 nm region. Theoretical studies of the reaction mechanism reveal the crucial role of the acid-base equilibrium which controls the populations of the protonated and neutral forms of the E isomer. Since the former is thermally stable, while the latter re-isomerizes on a millisecond time scale, we are able to modulate the half-life of ITIs over three orders of magnitude by shifting this equilibrium. Finally, stable bidirectional switching of protonated ITI with green and red light is demonstrated with a half-life in the range of tens of seconds. Altogether, we designed a new type of multi-responsive molecular switch in which protonation red-shifts the activation wavelength by over 100 nm and enables efficient tuning of the half-life in the millisecond-second range.

Tailoring of Optical Properties of Methacrylate Resins Enriched by HPHT Microdiamond Particles.

Project description:Diamond particles have great potential to enhance the mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of diamond-polymer composites. However, the improved properties of diamond-polymer composites depend on the size, dispersibility, and concentration of diamond particles. In the present study, diamond-polymer composites were prepared by adding the microdiamond particles (MDPs) with different concentrations (0.2-1 wt.%) into polymers (acrylate resins) and then subjected to a photocuring process. The surface morphology and topography of the MDPs-polymer composites demonstrated a uniform high-density distribution of MDPs for one wt.% MPDs. Thermogravimetric analysis was employed to investigate the thermal stability of the MDPs-polymer composites. The addition of MDPs has significantly influenced the polymers' thermal degradation. Absorption and emission spectra of thin layers were recorded through UV/Vis spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry. The obtained results revealed a significant increase in the fluorescence intensity of MDPs-polymer composites (at 1 wt.% of MDPs, a 1.5×, 2×, and 5× increase in fluorescence was observed for MDPs-green, MDPs-amber daylight, and MDPs-red resin, respectively) compared with the reference polymer resins. The obtained results of this work show the new pathways in producing effective and active 3D-printed optical elements.

Tailoring Optical Properties of a Large-Area Plasmonic Gold Nanoring Array Pattern.

Project description:A new fabrication route, which combines nanosphere lithography with silicon-based clean-room microfabrication processes, has been developed to produce large-area long-range ordered gold nanoring array patterns in a controllable fashion. Both the experimentation and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation show that the surface plasmon resonance peak (SPR) of the nanoring array pattern can be tuned systematically in a large spectral range by varying the geometry parameters such as the ring thickness, the ring height, the ringer outer diameter, and the gap between neighboring rings. For the Au nanoring arrays with a large gap in the absence of plasmon coupling between neighboring rings, the local electromagnetic (EM) field enhancement occurs at both the outer and inner surfaces of individual nanorings; and the periodicity of Au nanoring array has no any effect on the plasmonic properties. For the Au nanoring arrays with a small gap, plasmon coupling takes place between neighboring rings. As a result, the characteristic plasmonic band is split into two new peaks corresponding to a bonding SPR mode and an antibonding SPR mode. The local EM field enhancement becomes stronger with a decrease in the gap between neighboring rings, but the SPR peaks shift away. Therefore, to maximize the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal, the geometry parameters of the Au nanoring array need to be tuned to balance the contributions from the resonance excitation (spectral overlap) and the local EM field enhancement.

Tailoring nonlinear optical properties of Bi2Se3 through ion irradiation.

Project description:The nonlinear optical property of topological insulator bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) is found to be well-tailored through ion irradiation by intentionally introducing defects. The increase of the optical modulation depth sensitively depends on the careful selection of the irradiation condition. By implementing the ion irradiated Bi2Se3 film as an optical saturable absorber device for the Q-switched wave-guide laser, an enhanced laser performance has been obtained including narrower pulse duration and higher peak power. Our work provides a new approach of tailoring the nonlinear optical properties of materials through ion irradiation, a well-developed chip-technology, which could find wider applicability to other layered two-dimensional materials beyond topological insulators, such as graphene, MoS2, black phosphours etc.

Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Antiproliferative Evaluation of NBD-Triterpene Fluorescent Probes.

Project description:A fluorescent labeling protocol for hydroxylated natural compounds with promising antitumor properties has been used to synthesize, in yields of 72-86%, 12 derivatives having fluorescent properties and biological activity. The reagent used for the synthesis of these fluorescent derivatives was 7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole chloride (NBD-Cl). The linkers employed to bind the NBD-Cl reagent to the natural compounds were ω-amino acids (Aa) of different chain lengths. The natural triterpene compounds chosen were oleanolic and maslinic acid, as their corresponding 28-benzylated derivatives. Thus, 12 NBD-Aa-triterpene conjugates have been studied for their optical fluorescence properties and their biological activities against cell proliferation in three cancer cell lines (B16-F10, HT-29, and HepG2), compared with three nontumor cell lines (HPF, IEC-18, and WRL68) from different tissues. The results of the fluorescence study have shown that the best fluorescent labels are those in which the ω-amino acid chain is shorter, and the carboxylic group is not benzylated. Analysis by confocal microscopy showed that these compounds were rapidly incorporated into cells in all three cancer cell lines, with these same derivatives showing the highest toxicity against the cancer cell lines tested. Then, the fluorescent labeling of these NBD-Aa-triterpene conjugates enabled their uptake and subcellular distribution to be followed in order to probe in detail their biological properties at the cellular and molecular level.
