Efficient Hydro- and Organogelation by Minimalistic Diketopiperazines Containing a Highly Insoluble Aggregation-Induced, Blue-Shifted Emission Luminophore*.

ABSTRACT: We report the synthesis, gelation abilities and aggregation-induced, blue-shifted emission (AIBSE) properties of two minimalistic diketopiperazine-based gelators. Despite containing a highly insoluble luminophore that makes up more than half of their respective molecular masses, efficient hydrogelation by multiple stimuli for one and efficient organogelation for the other compound are reported. Insights into the aggregation and gelation properties were gained through examination of the photophysical and material properties of selected gels, which are representative of the different modes of gelation. The synthesis of the gelators is highly modular and based on readily available amino acid building blocks, allowing the efficient and rapid diversification of these core structures and fine-tuning of gel properties.

Probing the Aggregation and Signaling Behavior of Some Twisted 9,9'-Bianthryl Derivatives: Observation of Aggregation-Induced Blue-Shifted Emission.

Project description:With an aim to understand the photophysical behavior of twisted organic fluorescent molecules in their aggregated state, two twisted biaryl molecules, namely, 9,9'-bianthryl and 10,10'-dicyano-9,9'-bianthryl, have been synthesized and characterized by conventional spectroscopic methods. To understand the role of C-C bond twisting on the photophysical response of biaryl aggregates, monoaryl counterparts (anthracene and 9-anthracenecarbonitrile) of the biaryl systems are also investigated. Photophysical behaviors of these systems along with their monoaryl counterpart are investigated in both solution and aggregated state. Investigations reveal that fluorescence spectra of the biaryl compounds show blue-shifted emission upon aggregation. Interestingly, no blue shift of the emission has been observed for monoaryl aggregates. Photophysical data of biaryl systems compared to monoaryl unit reveal that change in geometry, during self-assembly process, disfavors the formation of charge-transfer state, which eventually causes blue shift in the emission upon aggregation. In addition to this, potential of these systems toward signaling of nitroaromatic explosive has also been explored. Among all of the nitroaromatics, the highest fluorescence quenching is observed for nitrophenols (say picric acid (PA)). The investigation also reveals that compared to monoaryl systems, biaryl systems are more responsive to fluorescence quenching by nitroaromatics. Perrin's model of quenching sphere action has been attributed to nitrophenol (PA) selective signaling behavior of biaryl systems.

Beetle luciferases with naturally red- and blue-shifted emission.

Project description:The different colors of light emitted by bioluminescent beetles that use an identical substrate and chemiexcitation reaction sequence to generate light remain a challenging and controversial mechanistic conundrum. The crystal structures of two beetle luciferases with red- and blue-shifted light relative to the green yellow light of the common firefly species provide direct insight into the molecular origin of the bioluminescence color. The structure of a blue-shifted green-emitting luciferase from the firefly Amydetes vivianii is monomeric with a structural fold similar to the previously reported firefly luciferases. The only known naturally red-emitting luciferase from the glow-worm Phrixothrix hirtus exists as tetramers and octamers. Structural and computational analyses reveal varying aperture between the two domains enclosing the active site. Mutagenesis analysis identified two conserved loops that contribute to the color of the emitted light. These results are expected to advance comparative computational studies into the conformational landscape of the luciferase reaction sequence.

Mechanical Force-Induced Blue-Shifted and Enhanced Emission for AIEgens.

Project description:Mechanochromic (MC) luminescence of organic molecules has been emerging as a promising smart material for optical recording and memory devices. At the same time, pressure-induced blue-shifted and enhanced luminescence are rarely reported now. Herein, a series of cyanostilbene-based AIEgens with different substituents were synthesized to evaluate the influence of morphology transformation and push-pull electronic effect on the MC luminescence. Among these luminophores, compound 1 with one cyano group and diethylamino group was more susceptible to mechanical stimuli and obtained blue-shifted and enhanced fluorescence in response to anisotropic grinding. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the MC behaviors were ascribed to the solid-state morphology transition from crystal-to-crystal. Analysis of crystal structures revealed that loose molecular packing is a key factor for high high-contrast MC luminescence. The smart molecular design, together with the excellent performance, verified that luminophores with twisted structures are ideal candidates for MC luminogens.

Hydrophobic carbon dots with blue dispersed emission and red aggregation-induced emission.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) have been studied for years as one of the most promising fluorescent nanomaterials. However, CDs with red or solid-state fluorescence are rarely reported. Herein, through a one-pot solvothermal treatment, hydrophobic CDs (H-CDs) with blue dispersed emission and red aggregation-induced emission are obtained. When water is introduced, the hydrophobic interaction leads to aggregation of the H-CDs. The formation of H-CD clusters induces the turning off of the blue emission, as the carbonized cores suffer from π-π stacking interactions, and the turning on of the red fluorescence, due to restriction of the surfaces' intramolecular rotation around disulfide bonds, which conforms to the aggregation-induced-emission phenomenon. This on-off fluorescence of the H-CDs is reversible when the H-CD powder is completely dissolved. Moreover, the H-CD solution dispersed in filter paper is nearly colorless. Finally, we develop a reversible two switch-mode luminescence ink for advanced anti-counterfeiting and dual-encryption.

Aggregation-induced enhanced emission-type cruciform luminophore constructed by carbazole exhibiting mechanical force-induced luminescent enhancement and chromism.

Project description:One D-A type cruciform luminophore MDCS-BC based on carbazole has been prepared. We observed that this compound exhibits unique intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) and typical aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) properties with the solid-state luminescence efficiency of 0.184. Moreover, this luminophore shows a significant stimuli-induced emission enhancement and chromism effect with good reversibility. Upon grinding, the fluorescence color of the as-prepared samples can change from blue (454 nm) to green (504 nm). What is unexpected is that the fluorescence efficiency of the initial powder is dramatically increased from 0.184 to 0.424 upon grinding. The results of PXRD, DSC and spectral properties studies show that the mechanical force-induced luminescence enhancement and chromism behavior of MDCS-BC originates from the transition between crystal and amorphous morphology, and the large red-shift and the emission enhancement inducing by grinding may be attributed to the planarization of the molecular conformation and subsequent planar ICT process.

Blue-emissive two-component supergelator with aggregation-induced enhanced emission.

Project description:Two-component organogels offer several advantages over one-component gels, but their design is highly challenging. Hence, it is extremely important to design new approaches for the crafting of two-component organogels with interesting optical and mechanical properties. Herein, we report the design of a new class of two-component supergelators obtained from the assembly between acid functionalized tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based dendrons and alkylated melamine. No gelation behaviour is observed for the individual components, but interestingly, remarkable gelation behaviour is observed for their hydrogen-bonded complex. The primary driving force responsible for the gelation is the strong π-π stacking interaction of TPE units. Because of the strong π-stacking of TPEs in the gel state, the C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond rotation of the TPE segment is completely arrested in the gel state, which results in intense fluorescence emission of the gels. Furthermore, excellent elastic response is observed for the gels as evident from their high storage modulus compared to loss modulus values. Our results clearly demonstrate that by the appropriate selection of the molecular components, this approach can be applied for the creation of functional nanomaterials with emergent properties absent in the individual blocks.

Crystallization-Induced Red Phosphorescence and Grinding-Induced Blue-Shifted Emission of a Benzobis(1,2,5-thiadiazole)-Thiophene Conjugate.

Project description:Mechanochromic luminogens are of significant importance in both academic and technical aspects. Thus far, most mechanochromic compounds exhibit bathochromically shifted emission upon grinding; the examples of those that exhibit blue-shifted emission still remain limited. Herein, a donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D)-structured conjugate, namely 4,7-di(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DTBT), comprising benzobis(1,2,5-thiadiazole) and thiophene units, has been carefully synthesized and investigated. DTBT exhibits typical intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics, crystallization-induced phosphorescence (CIP), and remarkable mechanochromism. Although it merely emits fluorescence in solutions with distinct ICT features, its crystals demonstrate bright-red room-temperature phosphorescence (616 nm) with efficiency up to 25.0% and generate yellow excimer fluorescence (578 nm) upon mechanical grinding, accompanying decreased lifetimes from 10.9 μs to 3.5 ns and a blue-shifted emission of 38 nm. These results highly indicate the feasibility to fabricate novel CIP luminogens with blue-shifted mechanochromism.

Blue-shifted ancyromonad channelrhodopsins for multiplex optogenetics.

Project description:Light-gated ion channels from protists (channelrhodopsins or ChRs) are optogenetic tools widely used for controlling neurons and cardiomyocytes. Multiplex optogenetic applications require spectrally separated molecules that must be found in nature, as they are difficult to engineer without disrupting channel function. Scanning numerous sequence databases, we identified three robust naturally blue-shifted ChRs from ancyromonads. They form a separate branch on the phylogenetic tree and contain residue motifs characteristic of anion ChRs (ACRs). However, only two conduct chloride, whereas the close Nutomonas longa homolog (peak absorption at ~440 nm) generates inward cation currents in mammalian cells under physiological conditions, significantly exceeding those by previously known tools. Measurements of transient absorption changes and pH titration of purified Ancyromonas sigmoides ACR (AnsACR) combined with mutant analysis revealed the roles of the residues in the photoactive site. Both ancyromonad ACRs allowed optogenetic silencing of mouse cortical neurons in brain slices. AnsACR expression in the cholinergic neurons enabled photoinhibition of pharyngeal muscle contraction in live worms. AnsACR could be activated by near-infrared two-photon illumination, which is required to control specific neurons in thick tissue. Our results improved the mechanistic understanding of light-gated channel function and expanded the optogenetic toolkit.Impact statementAncyromonad channelrhodopsins advance our understanding of ionic selectivity and wavelength regulation in light-gated ion channels and also expand the toolkit for all-optical electrophysiology.

Simultaneous emission of orthogonal handedness in circular polarization from a single luminophore.

Project description:The direct emission of circularly polarized (CP) light improves the efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode and characterizes the secondary structure of proteins. In most cases, CP light is generated from a luminescent layer containing chiral characteristics, thereby generating only one kind of CP light in an entire device. Here, we propose direct CP light emissions using a twisted achiral conjugate polymer without any chiral dopant as an emitting layer (EML). The twisted structure is induced in the mesogenic conjugate polymer due to its elasticity by applying different alignment directions to its upper and lower interfaces. Furthermore, we demonstrate the simultaneous emission of orthogonal CP light in a single luminescent device by patterning different alignment directions on the surfaces of the EML. The light source with multipolarization including the orthogonal CP states is applicable to many applications in biosensors and optical devices.

Project description:Four thiophene-containing tetraphenylethene derivatives were successfully synthesized and characterized. All these highly fluorescent compounds showed typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics and emitted different fluorescence colors including blue-green, green, yellow and orange in the aggregation state. In addition, these luminogens also exhibited various mechanofluorochromic phenomena.
