ABSTRACT: Biological behaviour-driven self-organized patterns have recently been confirmed to play a key role in ecosystem functioning. Here, we develop a theoretical phase-separation model to describe spatiotemporal self-similar dynamics, which is a consequence of behaviour-driven trophic interactions in short-time scales. Our framework integrates scale-dependent feedback and density-dependent movement into grazing ecosystems. This model derives six types of selective foraging behaviours that trigger pattern formation for top-down grazing ecosystems, and one of which is consistent with existing foraging theories. Self-organized patterns nucleate under moderate grazing intensity and are destroyed by overgrazing, which suggests ecosystem degradation. Theoretical results qualitatively agree with observed grazing ecosystems that display spatial heterogeneities under variable grazing intensity. Our findings potentially provide new insights into self-organized patterns as an indicator of ecosystem transitions under a stressful environment.

Project description:In the context of "Carbon Emissions Peak" and "Carbon Neutrality", grazing exclusion (GE) has been applied widely to rehabilitate degraded grasslands and increase carbon sequestration. However, on the QingZang Plateau (QZP), the impacts of GE on the carbon dynamics of alpine grasslands are poorly understood, particularly at a regional scale. To fill this knowledge gap, we evaluated the responses of carbon sequestration to GE in different alpine grasslands across QZP by using meta-analysis. The effects of GE on ecosystem carbon fractions were dependent on GE duration, grassland types and climate factors. Specifically, our results indicated that GE had more obviously positive effects on carbon stock across the alpine meadow than the alpine steppe. However, when considering different GE duration, the longer duration of GE was more effective for increasing ecosystem carbon sequestration (R 2 = 0.52, P<0.0001) in the alpine steppe. Our results further demonstrated that annual mean precipitation (AMP) and temperature (AMT) began to dominate ecosystem carbon sequestration after three years of GE duration across the alpine meadow; and AMP was an important climate factor limiting ecosystem carbon sequestration (R 2 = 0.34, P<0.01) in the alpine steppe. In terms of plant carbon fraction, GE generated continuous positive effect (P<0.05) on aboveground biomass with the increased GE duration in the alpine meadow, while this positive effect disappeared after the 8th year of GE duration. And no positive effects were found on belowground biomass in the 11th year in alpine steppe. For soil organic carbon (SOC), there existed periodic fluctuations (increased and then decreased) on SOC in response to GE. For microbial biomass carbon, there were no obvious trends in response to GE duration. In general, we highlighted that the responses of different carbon fractions (plant-soil-microbe) to GE were non-uniform at spatial and temporal scales, thereby we should adopt different carbon management practices for sustainable development of different grasslands.

Project description:Biological soil crusts (BSCs) play a fundamental role in desert ecosystems by stabilizing soil, cycling nutrients, and retaining moisture. However, the assembly processes governing bacterial communities within BSCs remain largely unknown. This study aimed to reveal the spatiotemporal variations in the bacterial community diversity, co-occurrence patterns, and ecological assembly processes of BSCs and their underlying soils across different desert and seasonal conditions. We systematically analyzed the spatial differences in the bacterial diversity, co-occurrence networks, and community assembly processes of BSCs and their underlying soils using samples collected at various soil depths from different BSC types in different deserts. We discovered that BSC type and soil depth were the primary factors driving bacterial community assembly, while seasonal effects were weaker and more indirect, and mainly regulated community dynamics through changes in resource availability and environmental conditions. The underlying soils of moss- and lichen-BSCs exhibited higher bacterial diversity and richness than those of algae BSCs. In contrast, cyano-BSCs exhibited a lower diversity, but Cyanobacteria demonstrated the highest photosynthetic function. Among the different deserts, the community assembly of samples from the eastern Inner Mongolia deserts was largely influenced by environmental selection, whereas stochastic processes were more prominent in the central and western desert regions. A β-nearest taxon index (βNTI) analysis indicated that stochastic processes were dominant in surface BSC samples, while environmental selection played a stronger role in deeper layers. A co-occurrence network analysis revealed that surface BSC samples had a high degree of network connectivity, with those from moss- and lichen-BSCs being particularly high, and they also exhibited high modularity and local clustering that promoted the functional stability of the microbial communities. This study revealed the integrated effects of soil depth, BSC type, desert type, and resource availability on microbial community assembly in desert ecosystems. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the microbial management of BSCs and scientific insights to support restoration strategies in desert ecosystems.
